2022-23 Game Thread: Knicks @ Cavaliers

The Knicks head to Cleveland to take on the team that decided TO trade a gazillion future draft picks for Donovan Mitchell.

I really, really want the Knicks to win this game. Just to shut up the Donovan Mitchell noise.

How is the win prediction looking? I think 49 wins still looks solid. Yes, the Knicks aren’t as good as, say, the Bucks, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t feast on the lesser teams while stealing a win here and there from the teams that aren’t as good as the Bucks. Hopefully tonight will be one of those such games!

Let’s go, Knicks!

This is another very good team we’re playing. The Cav’s are deep. Mitchell isn’t Giannis but he’s not far off. We need a lot of players to step up tonight.

I turn on the game and the cavs immediately hit three back to back to back three points smh

Brunson bricking everything and Randle playing for the Cavs, but we’re only down 5 and they’re on fire from long range.
We’re going to win this game 🙂

I’m starting to watch now. The daylight savings hour change was tonight and i wasn’t aware that in the US you guys didn’t change.

That was quite a pass to whichever member of the original Hoosiers squad that is

Donovan might have been a good acquisition

did the cavs adjust the sliders on three point shooting when we werent looking jesus christ

“Mitchell isn’t Giannis but he’s not far off. “

He’s VERY far off.

He seems to have something to say about that.

Did RJ Barrett just miss a shot at the rim?

Actually two, to be honest.

it feels like we’re generally outplaying them theres just not a lot you can do about them hitting that many three pointers in a row

I mean this was absolutely inevitable from Mitchell. Are we O3i believers yet? Shot looks better to me.

yeah obi has been stroking it from deep so far this season, idk what else he has to do to earn more playing time. he needs to be getting at least 20 a game

Barrett was fouled on both shots

Exactly. What can he do to not get this treatment from the refs?

the cavs announcers keep accidentally saying “reddit” when talking about cam lmao

Obi’s 53% for the season, small sample size silliness.

He’s also at 100% for free throws (2-2!).

Don’t worry I’m pretty sure the Cavs shooting will regress to our season .299 defensive 3p%.

I want to yell at someone like Thibs just did to the ref and just get a pat on the back and not a punch in the eye.

Wow. Gonna type Hart is playing so well, then IQ sends a beautiful Hail Mary to Obi.

Such a better team to watch this year. Win or lose.

Obi is electric in this shift…had a minor blackout on D just now but Thibs is leaving him out there…

I would very much like for IQ and Obi to play for the Knicks for their entire careers.

From preseason Barrett was close or good on his threes and Obi was far off almost all the time. I was convinced Barrett had improved his threes and Obi hadn’t; but from the regular season it’s the opposite.

Plus Obi had that nice move to the hoop earlier thanks his better 3 pt shooting overall. He’s definitely adding more to his game,

Mitch took a hard fall on his back, but he seemed okay…

Thanx. Let’s hope he’s really ok, then.

If only the trade for Mitchell had been available before we signed Brunson. We could not survive both on defense, but imagine if Mitchell were running the point…sigh ..

Mitchell has his flaws but in the narrow “shot creation” department, he’s up there with all but like 5 other guys

I’m sorry to say this but tonight we’re down because Branson is shooting 1-7 (and missed a FT), if he starts hitting something we’re gonna win this one.

“Mitch’s last 6 qtrs…not his best work…” — better/bigger opponents. This is exactly the worry.

Weird game. I feel like we should be down by a lot, but we’re right there. Let’s go.

I think we all know what were the problems in trading for Mitchell, and they certainly won’t change if he has a big game in this specific contest.

“Imagine having Obi Toppin on your roster and not playing him 30 minutes every night”

That would be the case for nearly every roster in the NBA.

But I would be happy with the 13 vs. 10 minutes split we saw this first half on a consistent basis…

I didn’t feel we were really on the level of the Bucks. That’s not the case here – we are not a cut below Cleveland.

It may be just the Bucks and Boston in the East…

I agree with rama, at no point in this game has it felt to me like we were completely outmatched, its just been them getting really hot from three and brunson missing a bunch of shots.

100%

And can you imagine a Spada-JB defensive backcourt? Brrrrrrr

P.S.
To be fair is not that JB-Casper is so much better… 🙂

It feels like we are fairly lucky to be this close given the way the Cavs are shooting and Brunson is struggling again without much space.

There’s a lot of Randle animosity on this blog, but he’s having a really solid game tonight

Wade “Thick as a Brick” from downtown to complement Breen’s campaign for Jethro Tull to get in the Rock Hall of Fame. (Breen and Tull? Odd pairing, no?).

And dmar, I agree, Randle playing decent and also well within himself.

“ Wait, Jethro Tull is not in the R&R HOF?”

Yeah and Bon Jovi and Journey are, smh

We are only a handful of games into the season and my girlfriend already banned from the watching the Knicks in the living room because I’m cursing at the TV so much. 🙂

“There’s a lot of Randle animosity on this blog, but he’s having a really solid game tonight”

Likewise, E4

That Reddit shot may be my favorite shot of the season.

As in, WTF????!!?!

“ That Reddit shot may be my favorite shot of the season.

Needs Benny Hill music

I love how Evian busted to get to the corner on that break and Randle hit him for 3. Nice on both parts.

There are acts in the R&R Hall of Fame that never actually played a R&R song in their careers. Jethro Tull was quite popular among rock fans back at their peak and there were even few rock cover bands around NY that did Tull back then.

Someone should tell RJ he only needs 7 more points to hit 20 and have this game be a success.

Interesting that Cam had the season’s stupidest offensive play and then a dumb-as-heck defensive play and there’s no Thibs hook…

Love Tull. Was just commenting that Breen seems more of a Buddy Holly guy than a Tull fan. And that Ozzy fans might be a bit confused by the flute stylings of Ian Anderson 😉

I’m not impressed with the Donovan Mitchell Cavaliers

Never say something like this during a game.
It can cost you a ban 🙂

Too early in the season for statement wins but nonetheless this would be a really nice win if they hold on.

Our defensive rebounding sucks at times. It really sucks!! No one boxes out. Everyone is out of position.

Cavs 3pters in 2nd half are alot more forced than the open looks they were getting in the 1st half.

Say what you will, Donovan Mitchell has hops. Between the Obi block and that spin-and-dunk, an impressive stretch.

Still against the trade.

Rama, stop copying me (even if I’m always second…).

As long as we win the game, i don’t care how many times DMitchell dunks the ball

“Reddish with as bad an offensive sequence as you will ever see from an NBA player”
**
Reddish to Reddish, “Hold my beer.”

did anyone see quickley pat wade on the ass when he came up behind him haha, nice little gadfly move from IQ

Weirdly, Fournier seemed to defend Mitchell better than Barrett some times.

How come when Breen says “Robinson took a shot to the head” the refs don’t see it??

tonights refs have been fine compared to the refs from last game but yeah that one was not a great look for them

This is turning from a huge win into a dispiriting loss.

And we know who’s to blame, right Cyber? 😉

I think it’s great that Thibs takes a time-out with 1:07 left just to shame the team for that Love three.

The Cavs’ dancers look like random teenagers pulled off the street because they were wearing a lot of makeup

Collective case of brain fart in the 4th but…

Second quarter:
IQ and Obi combined for two beautiful fastbreaks. Thibs took them out, they came back late in the game and play like shit.

Third quarter:
Fournier went hot and hit two corner threes in a row. Thibs took him out. When back on the field Casper shot blanks.

Why not play the hot hands until they cool off? To play Reddish?

I’m baffled.

Who said at the beginning of this thread that we can’t let this be the Donavan Mitchell game?

“Who said at the beginning of this thread that we can’t let this be the Donavan Mitchell game?”

I should have said the Kevin Love game…

Detroit hammering the Warriors, four of five starters with over 20, the fifth with 15.

Didn’t catch the game. Perhaps worth mentioning that Love was the best Cavs player last year by BPM. He’s still very, very good.

He’s still very, very good.

Alas is too late to write a memo for some of the Knicks: Obi, Randle, Reddish, Barrett… and Thibs

damn I think we were winning when I had to leave for a while what the fuck happened in the 4th?

“what the fuck happened in the 4th?”

Just imagine:
-Mitchell, Love, and Wade making a billion 3’s, including two 4-pt plays
-Obi playing defense like one of those spinning windup toys
-Spida doing more Spida stuff
-Reddish making Kevin Knox look coordinate
-Fournier putting up some UFOs from 3
-Julius playing all three roles in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly…mostly Tuco

“Mitchell, Love, and Wade making a billion 3’s, including two 4-pt plays”

Maybe a billion is overstating it, but they were a combined 22-34 from 3 for the game.

That team is for real.

Grumpy enough after this loss to want to watch the Denver-Laker game coming up.

Combination of “things could certainly be worse” with the pleasure that comes from malicious vindictiveness.

“Julius playing all three roles in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly…mostly Tuco”

Never mind…all of those guys could shoot

If you’re looking for a bright side, we have way more future draft picks than the Cavs.

Another bright side…those draft picks Danny got in that trade aren’t gonna be worth shit.

I put it on in the car with the game tied in the fourth and holy shit things went south fast.

The Cavs are a good squad. Getting Mitchell made way more sense for them.

Spurs tankathon-ers must be losing their minds that Doug Merc-Dermott is their leading scorer tonight.

Just imagine:

-Spida doing more Spida stuff
-Reddish making Kevin Knox look coordinate
-Fournier putting up some UFOs from 3
-Julius playing all three roles in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly…mostly Tuco

that right there almost made the loss bearable 🙂

I’m glad today I can’t care about the Knicks because the Bolsonaro brazillian nightmare is finally over!!!

Mitchell seems like a really good fit in Cleveland so far, but the trade always made more sense for them than it did for us because of how much upside their roster already had, so I’m not mad to see them doing well.

Congrats on getting him out!

I hope someone sets this season to a Jethro Tull song at the end of the year….

It’s still bittersweet because of how damn close it was, less than 2 million votes separating both candidates, but it’s such a gigantic relief. Thanks guys!

Bruno how happy are you that Lula won versus just having Bolsonaro lose?

Also, what do you think of Lula’s reversed conviction? I don’t know enough to comment but curious about the opinion of actual Brazilians.

Congrats Bruno! We need all the wins we can get these days. Bolsonaro can now focus on his passion of getting Covid an utterly bizarre number of times.

During Lula’s government the deforestation rate fell about 67% compared to prior governments, and it was rising at a rate of about 34% with Bolsonaro, so it’s safe to say while Lula’s government probably won’t solve the issue completely, it will certainly help a lot.

One thing that is becoming very clear is that there are no gimmee wins on the schedule. Even the so-called tanking teams have talent, play hard, and are well-coached.

Which to me makes this one of the most interesting seasons in a while
