    Continuing from last the thread.

Not to be negative about Brunson because I love him as much as anyone, but all we saw against the Bucks was that he’s not a #1 option. We knew that already. Almost by definition, a #1 option is the kind of player that can be slowed by a solid defender or game plan, but not stopped because their game is so diverse you can’t take everything away. Brunson is solid in multiple ways but there are going to be nights when it’s more than just missed shots. He’s going to be neutralized to some extent. The same is true of Randle and RJ. On nights like that someone else has to step up. Unfortunately for us, I think the Bucks are a dreadful matchup for us, but that’s why they are one of the favorites to win the championship.

Back to Brunson though, most nights he’s going to do his thing. This won’t be the last time he gets shut down though.

Strat, I’m not sure it’s very useful to point out that Brunson isn’t Giannis or peak LeBron. Brunson had a fairly crappy game, missed some shots he normally makes, tossed a couple passes away. It happens.

He’s literally the one player I don’t worry about on this roster.

An interesting subplot to this season is there’s a *chance* we have three first-rounders in the upcoming draft. My best guess is we wind up with two (our own and Dallas’) but with Brooklyn as bad as they’ve been and Chicago teetering, maybe Washington really does sneak into the playoffs.

It would be infuriating if Dallas really can’t get their shit together enough to convey theirs, ideally they’ll continue to struggle all season and gift us a late lottery pick.

I don’t even know much about this draft outside of the obvious stuff (e.g. Wemby is quite good at basketball) yet, but man, it would be a huge shame if we punted, again, on that opportunity to restock our young talent pool.

I’m not worried about Brunson, but he didn’t just randomly miss shots. He faced a defender and team defense that took him out of his game. The point I was making is that’s the difference between him and a Morant. You can slow Ja, he may have an off night, but you can’t stop him and take him out of his game. That’s the difference between a true #1 and #2 or #3. It was the same thing with Randle in his good year. He was terrific, but come playoff time the double team came and shut him down completely. A very good defensive team can slow Giannis by packing the paint, but he does too many things so well he can’t be stopped.

We lose to a great team that has the best player in the league- tell me how that diminishes how good our team and the best players on it are? We all know our best players’ limitations- should we be surprised that the Bucks were effective at defending them considering that that 2 of their best players are among the league’s best on defense? Nah..I’m not low on that loss. At all. I’m proud the guys fought all game. We all know we’re not on the Bucks’ level. Every team in the league is working out the kinks right now, except teams who have been together for a while like Milwaukee, Golden State, and maybe Phoenix. I don’t really know what’s going on with Miami, but they should be one of those teams too. Anyways..come December and we’re consistently losing to the league’s best by double digits- then it’s time for concern. Still sucks that we lost though lol

In a more lighthearted look at people doing what people are going to do, Toney Douglas Do What Toney Douglas Do is still playing, just overseas in Portugal:
    https://basketball.realgm.com/international/league/83/Portuguese-LPB/team/500/SL-Benfica/rosters

What a crappy team he decided to join. They’re like the Celtics to my team (FCPorto), don’t like them not one bit. Funny enough, they had Toure’ Murry playing there three or four seasons ago. I’m betting in 2 or 3 years they’ll sign Cleanthony Early! 😀

not sure if anyone touched on this but there’s a couple of very big reasons to be optimistic…

    RJ Barrett – 2p .484/ ft .792
    Julius Randle 2p .519/ft .778

and we are also looking at relatively high… and in the case of RJ career high… assisted 2p%… it doesn’t look like or feel like it…. but i think we are looking at a legitimate breakout from RJ whenever he starts getting some 3s to sink…

i don’t think all-nba julius will ever be back but this version is still useful… whether it’s worth the money depends if whether he’ll ever get his 3p shot back but something tells me if he just restricted himself to catch and shoot 3s he’d be fine…. right now he’s sort of ok but i’m optimistic on where he ends up on the season….

just 5 games but ft and 2p stabilize relatively quickly and so there’s a lot to be excited about so far…

If you think the overreactions here were bad after this loss, check out posting and toasting. Half that board was ready to blow up the team and tank after losing to one of the premier teams on the road LOL.

Yeah Brunson is not peak Lebron. Damn we screwed up signing him then. But also Brie Holiday is probably the best defensive PG in the league. So they’re not just a great team but also a bad match up for us. We fought hard and lost on the road. No biggie.

For me the bigger tests are gonna be when we face other low playoff seed/bubble teams on the road. Can we beat teams like minny, Dallas, raptors, etc…on the road enough and play well at home enough to pick off some upsets against really good teams. I like our chances.

The threes will start to fall for RJ and Randle. We have a lot of continuity but the starting five is still getting used to Brunson running the show. In about ten games or so he’s going to have a much better feel for where dudes like to get the ball.

Kendrick Perkins was so nice in what he said about the Knicks in the article referenced above that he deserves to be quoted here:

“When I look at the New York Knicks and I look at RJ Barrett, and I look at Jalen Brunson, who’s been playing at an All-Star caliber level right now. And you look at big Robinson down there holding down the middle along with Julius Randle. And at the point guard position, you can mix it up by throwing in D-Rose and Brunson together, and you still have the young stud in Immanuel Quickley. I must say, in the short minutes that Obi Toppin plays off the bench, he has a serious impact. This Knicks roster is fiesty, they get down and dirty, they get gritty, and they’re not afraid of anyone. They’re sharing the ball and passing up good shots to get great shots. If the Nets stay the way that they are with the same coach in Steve Nash, the Knicks will have a far better season than the Brooklyn Nets. The Knicks will actually make the playoffs and the Nets won’t.”

RJ would still need to hit 40% of his threes to be close to league average TS%. So he’ll hopefully keep inching his 2p% up either this year or in the next couple years. He’s young enough to do it… and maybe if we figure out that whole spacing thing…

Randle needs to hit 33% of his threes to be a smidge below league average TS%. It’s his career average but I worry because so much of that is influenced by that one outlier year. He’s hit 34% one other year, so he’s definitely capable, but his other two high volume years are atrocious… as we all know.

Still a huge improvement over last year for our offense.

    —-
BTW, our offense is really more of a 1a/1b/1c trio than a clear #1 option. But to me it’s ideally a 1a-1f offense adding any of Fournier/Rose/IQ who have it going. Brunson getting stopped is fine, but we need someone else to step up. Last game nobody did (or a certain stubborn coach didn’t allow Rose & IQ to step up).

Randle is playing almost exactly like we want him to. 40% of his shots are coming at the rim with another 29% coming from the “short-mid” area. 27% of his shots are coming from 3.

Unfortunately he’s just converting 57% of his shots at the rim, good for the 22nd percentile among forwards, and probably lower than that among players cleaning the glass characterizes as “bigs.” We all know how he’s shooting from three.

It’s early, etc. but this was one of my fears about him after last season. It seemed quite possible to me that he could get it together between the ears and still not be all that good of a player. If he has another subpar season finishing at the rim we’re all out of excuses–he’s playing with a point guard putting up bona fide all-star numbers.

The RJ situation is interesting. I won’t lie, him being a good finisher this year totally contravenes my eye-test but the numbers are there and they don’t lie. I’m still not really sure what “good RJ” looks like unless he can legitimately get back to 40% from 3, but it’s a good development nonetheless. Pretty incredible that he’s rocking a career low eFG% and TS% despite the finishing numbers because he can’t hit the broad side of a barn from anywhere else.

I’m still fairly optimistic about this team, we have a new PG and usually it takes time to blend together.
We’re exactly on par with what most of us thought before the season: 3 wins against bottom feeders (but Charlotte just beat the Warriors!) and losses in Memphis and Milwaukee.

And I’m still not out on RJ Barrett, not after 5 games.
I don’t think a 35.7% career shooter (on more than 900 tries) suddenly become a 14.3% for a whole season.

It’s not a novelty, last year he started 7-26, the year before he had a 3-3 first game than went on to miss the next 21 shots (!!!) before a 4-5 performance, so it was 7-29. This year the slump is even worse but he’ll snap out of it.

He’s not a natural shooter and he’s streaky as hell, probably he’ll never be the reliable shooter we’d like to have.

Am I worried? A bit, but for the rest of his game, not for shooting.
He used to help more with rebounds, assists and defense when the shots don’t fall.
I think he needs a good game to change the switch and go back to be useful.

Will he become a star? It’s less and less probable, but I still think he can end up being a productive 3rd option on a good team.

P.S. The overlapping issue between he and Randle is still there and the same is true for the spacing problem with Mitch cloggin the lane. It’s not easy to solve with this roster (and Thibs’ philosophy), but the team as a whole has a wide margin of improvement.

I think the Nets are going to be fine. They are not a deep team and have been missing a few key pieces. That’s a problem for them. At the same time Simmons is coming back from a long layoff and hasn’t been nearly as effective as he used to be so far. I think they’ll start rolling soon (probably just in time for us lol) unless Simmons and/or Kyrie go off the deep end even if Durant is starting to slow a little defensively.

One thing that may be relevant is that I heard RJ say in pre season he didn’t work on 3 pointers as much this off season. He was working on FTs, finishing at the rim, getting to the FT line, and making the right read. He seemed to be implying he was modeling his game after Jimmy Butler and the 3s were a lower priority for him now. I get all that, but it could also explain the slow start from 3 and some improvements elsewhere.

RJ is taking 34.4% of his shots at the basket and hitting them at a 64.5% rate.

Over the previous 2 years he took 31.6% of his shots at the basket and hit 60%.

He’s also up in the 3-10ft range where he takes 23% of his shots and hits 38.1% of his shots, up from 31.2%.

It’s part of the nice thing about taking so many layups, you can miss a bunch of bunnies and still put up good numbers.

I won’t lie, him being a good finisher this year totally contravenes my eye-test but the numbers are there and they don’t lie.

Maybe the numbers don’t lie, but they tell an “adjusted” truth, while your eyes are right.
Take away the layup/dunks with no/light defence (for instance the last basket against the Hornets) and RJ numbers at the rim are slightly (or not slightly) different.

In my opinion, at least so far, he hasn’t been a good finisher against slightly-to-highly contested shots at the rim.

Take away the layup/dunks with no/light defence (for instance the last basket against the Hornets) and RJ numbers at the rim are slightly (or not slightly) different.

It was against the Magic, not the Hornets. 🙂

I don’t think there’s any question RJ is still not a good finisher, but there is also a category called “less bad than he used to be”. This isn’t the first year he got some dunks and easy baskets. If he can turn himself into Jimmy Butler over the next 2-3 years I’d sign off for that. 🙏 That doesn’t seem likely, but some improvement does.

Do any of you guys use any of these gambling sites? Is there one anyone would recommend? I want to put some money on the Blazers title odds (currently plus 12,000). But I don’t want to use my guy because it would probably be cheaper for him to have me snuffed than to pay off the bet.

They have different odds, so whichever one gives you the best odds.

A lot have signup bonuses too. I’d check on those, but probably not use them for the Blazers bet. Most won’t cover that far out.

“But I don’t want to use my guy because it would probably be cheaper for him to have me snuffed than to pay off the bet.”

    😂😂😂😂😂

the cavs are another big team down low…

hopefully we give sims a chance to see what he can do with big agile guys…

these big duos, sometimes whole frontcourts 6’10” or so, give us trouble rebounding and getting to the rim on offense…

    got to hit shots today…

I’m totally on board with quik replacing evian in the lineup…

jalen looks good most nights leading the offense, he doesn’t match up well defensively with a lot of guards, or anyone on the other team really…

we need help stopping the ball, badly…

RJ on donovan today, that’ll be interesting…this should be a game RJ has circled on the calendar…

and thanks for the positive RJ vibes dj phan, well timed and much needed…

I hope you’re doing well with the dad stuff 🙂

being a ‘good finisher’ has a lot of room for interpretation but all it takes for being a ‘better finisher’ is just taking out your worst attempts and replacing them with better attempts and gravity will take care of the rest…

that’s where the assisted 2pt fg% comes in and why that portends better and likely good things…. you might not observe a ‘good finisher’ but neither randle or rj have to be good finishers in isolation… it really is all about taking better opportunities at the rim… getting them while they’re moving towards the basket where the space is created FOR them… instead of them making it for themselves… that was never gonna be sustainable for them in any fashion….

and RJ’s ft% is getting close to definite improvement territory and yes it’s very possible and very common for 3pt% to not improve along with it…. but it means very good things for his shot developing eventually.. and i’m willing to bet we’ll see it soon…. there were many here who swore up and down that RJ could never shoot 40% from 3 at the beginning of the season where he actually did… which also saw measured improvement at the line….

we are definitely seeing mixed signals… but the things that stabilize pretty quickly are pointing to quantifiable improvement and you can look no further than Brunson as the largest factor in all of that… if we start shooting higher quality 3s (ie eliminating pull up 3s from guys who can’t shoot it)… or if they start falling at a moderately higher rate.. a lot of the narratives will start changing….

They have different odds, so whichever one gives you the best odds.

Ah, I see. And they vary wildly on the Blazers. Most have them have reduced them down to a typical long shot (+4900ish). One still has them at +12000 but they have a $200 maximum. If this comes in I want it to pay for my son’s college. $24,000 probably won’t even cover his books by then.

Thank you, Geo. See you on Nov 12! And if any other Angelinobloggers want to join us, let us know. Donnie Walsh, JK47, CDiggy, it would be an honor. Jowles, it sounds like you could use a break from Portland, too.

    YES!

I have no idea what we’re doing. I’m in Geo’s hands.

Bojan Bogdanovic has agreed on a two-year, $39.1 million extension with the Detroit Pistons,

    Shooting is expensive.

If we lose tonight and RJ plays poorly while Mitchell plays well this site is going to be unusable so we really need a win

I wonder if RJ is going to get the assignment on Mitchell. There have been some interesting stats floating around sbout how much running RJ does during the typical game and he’s near the highest in the league.

“Bojan Bogdanovic has agreed on a two-year, $39.1 million extension with the Detroit Pistons”

    I don’t understand this move.

I understand adding some vets to a very young team to help with development. But giving him another 2 years at what I would say looks like a bit of an overpay makes less sense.

Bad start for my sports Sunday. What a miserable, inexcusable Jets game!
I hope the Knicks can salvage the day. Mitch gets to play back-to-back Lopez’s. If Mitchell goes off tonight, look for people to call for Leon’s head for not making the trade (which, BTW, based on the reports of what we had to give up. I didn’t want to make). This is another very strong team. They were ready to make a trade for Donovan Mitchell.

As for RJ’s 3 point shooting, there’s no excuse for him to have cut back on practicing his 3’s. It’s a critical skill in this NBA.
