2021-22 Game Thread: Knicks @ Warriors

Watch these assholes win this game just to make their play-in chances seem realistic.

At least Mitch is back! Maybe he’ll have a good game against the relatively short Warriors.

Let’s go take a nap!

Guessing this thread will be kinda dead due to disenchantment and the late start.

But go Knicks!!!

Skipped last game. Tuned in tonight (to start). Waiting for Thibs to choose process or be fired.

d-mar:
I told my wife I wasn’t gonna watch this game and here I am watching.

Fuck

Same, except instead of my nonexistent wife it was myself

Thibs going to play Randle 48 minutes to eke out a win against the Warriors to get to 6 games under .500.

d-mar:
I told my wife I wasn’t gonna watch this game and here I am watching.

Fuck

Did the same, but I watched Superbad first … it just bled into the game, I dunno

You can see why people are high on Cam, and then he gets burned on defense repeatedly and takes a dumb shot.

Early Bird, was just going to say that. Cam can look like an embryonic solid scorer, but he’s also an idiot and doesn’t have a CLUE on defense. I’m really not sold, since it’s hard to learn not to be an idiot (or play defense).

Look at us run

I can’t believe Thibs stuck with such a cool lineup for so long. And let them run and everything!

Kemba is deep fried. Some fun Cam moments though, let’s try not to banish him.

Julius with a double-double already. And perhaps more important, only one turnover so far.

I’m watching the local broadcast here in the bay area…the warriors announcers keep questioning why we don’t push the pace all the time…

I’m just thinking that maybe Deuce could also go 1-5 and repeatedly hand the ball off to Randle at the top of the key.

We’re out rebounding them because we’re just rebounding better… fact … our turnovers are garbage… some result of defense but majority unforced… unfortunate that we aren’t winning this game

As much as I’ve grown to hate Randle and his shitty attitude, it’s still a good thing that he’s reviving his season right?

You know, the way Randle has played the last 4 games really makes me think he had something going on personally before that we don’t know about.

There’s no other explanation. He’s like a new man

the pressure of this season is off more or less…cards are all on the table for each of our “vet” players…

i have no doubt we’ll play better the rest of the way…we started playing better not so surprisingly once julius started getting himself together a few games ago…

we got a super tough schedule the rest of the way, but, i’d imagine we stay within striking distance of the play in up until the last couple of weeks of the season at least…

With you on that, d-mar. First time in forever it looks like he’s having fun out there, and he’s making last year’s shots.

If Clyde was in the building we’d definitely be hearing about the Warriors hacking and whacking

Don’t like that timeout. It’s not like the Warriors were on a roll. They, like, made one shot!

Wow, he bailed Randle out like crazy on that shot, as that had no shot at going in.

Brian Cronin:
Wow, he bailed Randle out like crazy on that shot, as that had no shot at going in.

Looked like it would’ve been short. Good break for the Knicks!

Open up cap space for Brunson and let’s roll. There’s no stopping us now!!!! We are back!!!! lmao

The Suns just pummeling the Bucks, they’re so impressive

The other reason why I don’t get how the Warriors are the current favorites to win the title. They couldn’t execute at the end against the fucking Knicks, but they’re going to beat the Suns?

Brian Cronin: The other reason why I don’t get how the Warriors are the current favorites to win the title. They couldn’t execute at the end against the fucking Knicks, but they’re going to beat the Suns?

they are missing Draymond…it’s a big piece…and porter…and iguadola …but still…I would pick the suns over them…

We are back!!!

There’s no stopping us now!!!

Open up cap space for Brunson and let’s roll!!!!

Lmao

Seriously, this team as it stands will look a LOT better once we have a legitimate starting plus PG. Everyone is going to play better and the young guys will start blossoming.

Thank you, Klay Thompson!

That final possession was how I imagine other teams feel like watching the Knicks try to execute. Heroball and an ugly miss.

Also, how funny was the Warriors getting burned by going small and Kerr just…stuck with it?

It’s really kind of a shame, if Randle and Fournier hadn’t been so bad the first few months of the season we’d be in a whole different place

But yeah, while I think the Warriors choked themselves out of this game, I also think Randle, Fournier, Taj and Reddish all had really good games and Burks, Kemba and Mitch all did well, as well.

Kemba has played better recently. He’s acting like a PG and trying to penetrate the defense and get the ball moving. He has 14 asts over the last 2 games in 44 total min. The only better back to back assist totals were his 40 min games, totaling 20 in 83 total min.

Julius’ play has been a lot better, but, listening to last game’s post-game and his interview immediately after this game – yeah, i don’t think julius’ is really “getting it”…

who knows though, maybe as a professional athlete you have to commit 100% to thinking that no matter what – you’re the man…

what i don’t ever wanna hear again – is another thibs interview…not sure if the players have completely tuned him out, but i have…

hey, what happened to E?

maybe he’s the real reason we’ve been losing so much…

But yeah, while I think the Warriors choked themselves out of this game, I also think Randle, Fournier, Taj and Reddish all had really good games and Burks, Kemba and Mitch all did well, as well.

Ha, went to bed early, assumed id wake up to news of another blowout loss, and instead we not only beat the freaking warriors, but Reddish wasn’t useless? Tell me more about how he played, since otherwise this seems like a vet-driven win.

I hope no one is fooled again by Randle having a good stretch of games, maybe even until the end of the season. This is only because we don’t stand a chance to be in the play-in, so the pressure is gone. But we know he can’t handle pressure situations, he did bad in the playoffs, and he did bad when we were supposed to be good, both times failing to deliver. So it’s very good that he plays well until the end of the season… TO TRADE HIM. Please Leon, don’t you enter Mike K’s Randle Paradox!

If someone had tell me 10 games ago that the 22-22 Raptors and the 23-23 Celtics in 10 games would be ahead of the 29-16 Nets, i’d have laughed hard. But here we are.

Also, on top of the east we have Miami, Chicago and Cleveland. Bucks are 4th, Phila 5th and the Nets are only 8th.

anyone notice knickerblogger running very slowly lately… do we need to start a gofundme for an upgrade?

KJG:
anyone notice knickerblogger running very slowly lately… do we need to start a gofundme for an upgrade?

Yes the site is slow. I just assumed Brian and Mike have stopped pedaling 😉 I’m up for the gofundme (if nec.)

And. Like Rip Van Winkle I wake to find a win and a completely different team just as Leon drew it up (maybe even with the thought of trading RJ at a value-high).

I still ride the Optimist Express. I think Randle enjoys strange hotel rooms instead of his own master bedroom with a squealing newborn. I think he will sort himself out well enough if never become LeBron. I just want Thibs to embrace doing due diligence on Obi, Cam, Grimes, Deuce, Sims, so we can love them or ship them out. He seems closer to doing that with every game. DRose’s return will show what we can do with a competent PG, even if he is not the solution (as everyone knows).

so – basically it seems that all I have to do is say a player is a bum and we should get rid of him and that player goes on to play amazingly thereafter.

I think sometime in Dec I said RJ was just a guy and I was out on him, and he’s had the best stretch of his career since.

Last week I said Randle is a loser and we should get rid of him while we can, and he morphs back into 2020-2021 Julius Randle just like that.

Who should I do next? let’s see…

Man – that Immanuel Quickley is looking pretty lost. Too small, shot has deserted him, overrated on defense. Maybe he has nerve damage from having COVID so many times. We should sit him and play Arcidiacono instead.

How was that?

Was I the only one who was annoyed at the decision to foul Curry up 3 with 8 seconds left? It worked out, but my thinking is that you are making it a 1-pt game and at best they would foul and you would make 2, making it a 3pt game with like 6 seconds, at worst, it would be a 1 or 2 point game. As expected, our shooter (Cam) made 1 of 2, and we were lucky that GS a) didn’t get the ball back to Steph and b) Klay missed a shot he makes in his sleep.

I would have lived and died with a Steph (or someone else) 3 there because 8 seconds was too much to play with. 3 or 4 seconds, maybe.

Re: the trade deadline – I think it is actually fine that we stood pat if nothing was worth doing. Selling low is never a great idea, and there is no doubt that Burks/Noel will have more value as expiring contracts after this season than they have now, especially if they can start playing better again.

I think they should sit Noel for a month and really let that knee get better. Let Sims get some run. I was actually pretty impressed with him in the Denver game, although I fell asleep before halftime.

Need to somehow get Deuce some minutes too.

Randle played hard and didn’t turn the ball over much. That’s the good news. The bad news is that the 28 points came with TS% of 49.5%. Aside from the TOs, critical misses, ball stopping, and attitude issues all season, the more basic problem has been his scoring efficiency. In his post game interview he was totally clueless.

The same has been true of RJ. I’ve been more forgiving of RJ because he’s younger and on the upside, but both have to be more efficient.

When (if) we ever get a real PG that can drive/kick and take the ball out of their hands so they don’t always have to create for themselves, hopefully we’ll not only get more efficient scoring out the PG position, we’ll also get better efficiency out of Randle, RJ and Fournier.

It would also help if we get a PG that can defend a little. The defense has to be better. We took a step back on defense switching from Bullock/Payton to Fournier/Kemba (or whoever). The defense has to be fixed.

KB Apprentice: Yes the site is slow. I just assumed Brian and Mike have stopped pedaling 😉 I’m up for the gofundme (if nec.)

Yes, if they need… of course…

When Cam looks good he looks really good. The game effortless for him.

There were a number of times I thought he got beat on D or just looked absolutely lost, a lot more than you ever want to see.

He shied away from contact on a couple layups and ended up missing the shots.

On his 2 missed 3s he shot it very flat. One of the flat shots was a buzzer beater. He faded away unnecessarily and airballed.

Cam’s cutting and ballhandling can really add something to the 2nd unit when he isn’t an idiot.

He did a good job keeping the ball moving for the most part. Had a pretty assist to Randle in the post.

Cam is still raw for 22. He missed time due to injuries as a pro and was also injured in college. I’m hoping that he’s not just another knucklehead because you can see the talent. You just don’t know if he’s going to put it all together.

Beating the warriors to position ourselves to be at the absolute end of the lottery is one of Dolan’s Razors cleanest cuts.

Looks like Kuminga had a good game. Interested to see how he turns out.

I woke up and checked the halftime box score.Reddish was somehow 4-5 with a negative 9.

This has indeed been the season where all takes go to die. Except for one. Randle will be a superhero the rest of the way and they will win exactly 45 as I predicted.

When (if) we ever get a real PG that can drive/kick and take the ball out of their hands so they don’t always have to create for themselves, hopefully we’ll not only get more efficient scoring out the PG position, we’ll also get better efficiency out of Randle, RJ and Fournier.

Doesn’t Derrick Rose to this? Whether it’s Rose, RJ, or Kemba, Julius doesn’t seem happy when a PG takes the ball out of his hands. I doubt that will fix him.

Since we didn’t unload Randle, the next move I think is to see how he performs with a different coach running the offense. That’s more likely to help Randle than a PG. Who knows, maybe Thibs is the reason Randle is so miserable.

Brian Cronin: That final possession was how I imagine other teams feel like watching the Knicks try to execute. Heroball and an ugly miss.

Also, how funny was the Warriors getting burned by going small and Kerr just…stuck with it?

I guess small ball works for Kerr 90% of the time or whatever. I wondered why they kept switching Curry on Randle, too. Seems like you’d want to avoid him having to bang with Randle, possible fatiguing him.

To complete the KP trade, the Mavs waived Moses Brown. We have an open roster spot, should we take a look at the kid? He’s only 22 and last year he put up 12 games with 10+ TRB and 10+ PTS, with a 23 TRB 21 PTS and a 18 TRB 24 PTS games. And on top of that he’s a new yorker. I know we don’t need Cs, but if we sit Taj and we let Noel heal properly, we can try Sims and Brown to check if one of them can make next season’s roster.

Good to hear more details on Reddish. My expectations remain incredibly low for the guy, having been burned by AntRand (different game, but similar “incredible talent inside a player with a dumb approach” archetype) all those years ago. If Bryant, Payne, et al can unlock something in there, great. Either way, he should play as much as possible over the rest of the season.

We still have one win now move on the buyout market. Everybody get ready for… Schroder on the Knicks! 😛

Reddish did two things a number of times that surprised me in a good way. He drove into the paint seemingly at will, with sneaky little moves that got him close to the basket. And he whipped passes from his drives back out to the three-point line after driving, more than once, which I really wasn’t expecting (he has a few dumb-guy behaviors that I expected to extend into ball-hoggery and terrible contested shots). So those were really good signs.

His defense is atrocious, however. Like Kemba bad. It’ll be interesting to see if that’s fixable, since so much of defense is effort to stay in front of your man regardless of all impediments (see Grimes and McBride).

His free-throw shooting has been nice to see, especially as the rest of the team is in some nightmare doldrums. Of course he missed the first of two toward the end that could have helped ice the game, but that felt inevitable.

The funny thing about Reddish apparently looking so awful on defense is that the Atlanta fans/writers say that there were periods in his first two years where he looked like a really good wing defender, even better at some things than Hunter. It seems there’s some ability there, too. Whether he’s not expending enough effort, isn’t comfortable with Thibs’ scheme yet, or whatever, it’s obviously not there now, and may not be at all. But there’s anecdotal evidence that it exists somewhere.

Speaking of Cam, Bill Oram with a bit more detail on why the rumored three-teamer didn’t happen:

Sources indicated the Lakers had several potential deals fall through, with players including Toronto’s Khem Birch and Chris Boucher, as well as the Knicks’ Cam Reddish in the mix to come to Los Angeles. A three-team deal involving the Knicks and Raptors was scuttled after the other two teams couldn’t agree on draft compensation.

It seems even more likely based on that repor that we turned down Dragic and a first for Burks & Noel.

So the trade instantly cured all the mental health issues that Simmons previously invoked, right?

It seems even more likely based on that repor that we turned down Dragic and a first for Burks & Noel.

It really does sound like that, because Noel and THT is a better return than just Thaddeus Young. That is…concerning.

Alan from what I gather from the more matchup based stats is that Reddish is a legitimately excellent iso defender and one of the worst players in the league at team defense. If you watch him when his man doesn’t have the ball it certainly looks like he has no idea what’s going on, he just sort of drifts around.

Hubert: It seems even more likely based on that repor that we turned down Dragic and a first for Burks & Noel.

If that’s the case, it was… how can i say… stupid? We would’ve opened cap space and on top we would’ve got a first. Now, if in the summer we need to open cap space, we need to waste picks to get it. Because as Brian said, the Mavs are not obliged to accept a sign and trade.
And i don’t know how in the summer those 2 will value more. Burks for more than a first, impossible. Noel for what? To find a trade partner that won’t send back salary it’ll be impossible.

I liked the fact that, when Reddish fell to the floor after one of his drives, his teammates immediately and enthusiastically rushed over to help him up. They seem to like him on a personal level.

The biggest problem is midseason we can trade our guys for expiring contracts to open up cap space which means we can send them to capped-out teams. To clear cap space in the offseason you have to send them to teams with space, there will be like 4 this summer, and they might rather save their cap space or sign other free agents. It really narrows down our opportunities to move them without attaching sweeteners.

Also, once Rose comes back and Noel and RJ are healthy where does that leave our team? Two of Grimes, Fournier, Burks, IQ, and Reddish have to sit. I know who I would choose but I am betting it’s Reddish and Grimes. Plus McBride, Sims, and Samanic (whenever he is healthy) are stuck on the bench and Toppin is stuck maxing out at 12-15 minutes a game.

Unless we lose like 6 in a row Thibs won’t pack it in for another 20 games and we’ll get maybe 5-6 games where we really get to see our young players.

Very much so. If the goal is seriously to clear out some cap space for this summer, then not taking the Raptors deal looks insane. Berman’s story suggests that they won’t trade players at their lowest value just to clear them out for cap room, but how in the fuck is that not better than having to use sweeteners to trade them in the summer? Do we really think Noel and Burks’ market is somehow going to get so much better between now and the summer that teams will give the Knicks more than a lottery-protected Toronto pick that would have conveyed this fucking offseason? What in the world are they thinking? This sounds like some hardcore delusional shit. It reminds me of when the Timberwolves offered Rubio for Rose because Thibs was Thibs and Jax was, like, “Nah, throw in more.”

In this scenario (which is likely), the Knicks are placating Tom Thibodeu’s ego more than acting in the best interest of the organization.

Is Dragic not expiring? Turning down a first for those guys seems dumb.

Reddish being completely clueless and disengaged unless his man has the ball in which case he does a good job, seems like a spot on description of his defense

I see no reason that Thibodeau would play the young guys just it’s sake even in that last 5-6 game scenario. He simply doesn’t believe in doing that, regardless of the context.

Saw little of Rokas, only 6 mins, and now i have to tune in my soccer team. 😛 Rokas plays with good pace, even managed to throw a alleyoop (but the receiver failed to finish), which in europe is not easy as the players are everywhere (they run a lot, but sometimes they look directionless).

Is Dragic not expiring? Turning down a first for those guys seems dumb.

He is, but accepting an expiring contract and a first round draft pick that would convey this year is apparently “selling low” in the Knicks’ mind on Noel and Burks when they could help them make the play-in game this year. Mindboggling.

The play-in game in the NBA is fascinating. On the one hand, it is clearly doing what it was meant to do – give exciting single elimination games and make it so that even dogshit teams make “win now” moves. But…it also means that dogshit teams make “win now” moves and…gross.

If the goal is seriously to clear out some cap space for this summer

Maybe that isn’t the goal? Or it’s not the primary goal?

Maybe they want Brunson and if he really wants to go to the Knicks they’ll figure out a way to make it happen. Or maybe they want Brunson but not so bad that they’re willing to super overpay for him.

Maybe they think a healthy and productive, expiring Noel and Rose and an expiring Burks on a team with a better record next year will fetch far more future assets than they would now and they’re just being patient because they know the team isn’t there yet but also that this team is probably better (maybe even much better) than they’ve played this year.

Let’s review

Noel – great defender, sometimes starter, productive and healthy last 2 seasons. Hurt all year, hurting our defense.
Mitch – out of shape to start the season, took him awhile to get going.
Randle – regressed badly but still a very good player who maybe just needs to get his shit together mentally.
RJ – has improved in some ways but stalled, especially early in the season.
Fournier -weird fit, played poorly to start the season. Starting to find his role on the team.
Kemba – hasn’t worked out, poor defensively. Can be upgraded in the off season even if it’s just a stop gap vet PG who isn’t totally shot physically.
Rose – best player but been out for 2 months, hurt second unit and our offense.

Plus a covid stretch that happened right when we were starting to look better and that fucked us. The randle fan drama, etc.

Maybe staying put with this team, an off season to recoup,, the youngsters getting better, etc…we can come back and be good next year. And even if not, next year we can have way more cap space open up and have all of those expiring contracts.

This board preaches patience but then gets mad when we’re…..patient.

A first round pick would be nice but maybe next year we get more than that?

Raptors could’ve been asking for a 2nd in return for their 1st. They ended up getting a very good 2nd from the Spurs. In that case, Rose would be getting a worse return on Reddish than he just paid.

Rose sent out a 1st to acquire Reddish and would be sending out Burks & Noel I addition to Reddish for a 1st. This reduces to disagreement over the value of Cam.

If we’re guaranteed to get Brunson, we should do it anyways. But if there’s no Brunson guarantee, then I don’t see it as a mistake.

Early Bird:
Also, at this point I think Grimes gets minutes over IQ when Rose returns.

Grimes deferred to everyone last night. I’d like to see him be a little more aggressive on offense.

DudeInKnicksTown: Grimes deferred to everyone last night. I’d like to see him be a little more aggressive.

yeah…seems like they either forgot about him, froze him out or the offense is so poorly designed…he never was involved…

Raptors could’ve been asking for a 2nd in return for their 1st.

The Knicks have about a million seconds that they never use.

Thaddeus Young vs Noel and Burks isn’t apples to apples. Young is due $20,000,000 less guaranteed money than Noel and Burks. The raptors may not have wanted to pay that difference, along with a first-rounder. So it may not prove Rose is dumb. It may just indicate that he wants more than just cap relief for his assets (which may be dumb too, but there’s certainly no urgency to clear cap space, so it’s a meh non-move for now)

Grimes deferred to everyone last night. I’d like to see him be a little more aggressive on offense.

Oh man, how pathetic was that bit where Grimes was right in front of the basket and then, like, threw a bounce pass to Mitch right next to him behind the basket who bobbled it, obviously not thinking that Grimes was going to throw a pass in that situation? It was extremely Game 7 Ben Simmons-esque.

Brian Cronin: It was extremely Game 7 Ben Simmons-esque.

One difference being Grimes is a ROOKIE, with 587 minutes of professional playing time so far.

And a rookie on a team filled with knuckleheads.

Yeah, Grimes seems afraid of getting swatted at the basket. He makes it unnecessarily difficult on himself to score. It’s a much less pronounced version of IQs fear of layups.

He’s one of many players (basically everyone on the roster) who would benefit from a PG. I thought Randle missed him a number of times.

Rokas did play 15 minutes with 6 points (3-3) 5 assists and 2 rebounds, plus-1 in a game his team won very easily.

Barcelona started the game 28-6 (no Rokas in that span) and never look back.

Nice game as a complementary piece, he’s establishing himself as the full backup-PG (all his minutes were in place of Calathes).

More tomorrow after another look at the game.

Brian Cronin: The Knicks have about a million seconds that they never use.

Exactly! And no moves, or meh moves, or whatever, that is only good if you’re in a good situation. We clearly need to make some moves, so to not make use of the times when you’re allowed to make those moves, is bad. There’s no other way to put it. Would Pat Riley stand pat with this roster? Would Ujiri? Nah, of course not. But we should be happy that Leon did nothing wrong.

While I’m on eurobasket let me let me digress a bit.

My italian team’s POBO is argentinan legend Luis Scola.
A month ago with the team in disarray and inching to relegation he decided it was time for drastic measures so he changes coach and GM.

The new GM is former Knicks’ director of basketball strategy and capologist Michael Arcieri (he was here from 2017 to 2020 and he’s a Scott Perry’s protégé since his Orlando days).

I just discovered that Arcieri was recommended to Scola by one of his closest friends, who was Scola’s guest in Italy at the time… Gersson Rosas.

Basketball is a small world.

That’s a very interesting story, Max. Basketball is a small world indeed.
About Barcelona, should we bring the coach (Jasikevicius) along with Rokas? I was very impressed with the way he manages the team, in the time i watched the game.

This board preaches patience but then gets mad when we’re…..patient.

This board doesn’t preach anything as a one-size-fits-all solution to every problem.

Sometimes patience is the right move. And sometimes waiting too long will blow up in your face.

Former Indiana Pacers and Golden State Warriors Sarunas Jasikevicius? 😉

He is very good.
EL is a coaches league like the NCAA and the brand of basketball very structured and team oriented (only 14 players are scoring 15 PPG or more, it’s unbelievable). Rokas’ numbers would be much higher in a no-defense league like the G-League.

which may be dumb too, but there’s certainly no urgency to clear cap space, so it’s a meh non-move for now

There isn’t urgency to clear cap space if they don’t want cap space for this summer, but if they do, then the time to get it very much was this trade deadline, as you’ve now lost the ability to acquire an expiring contract from a capped out team. Now, any trades to clear cap space would have to involve the teams with cap room which are generally bad teams that have no need for Burks/Noel, so you have to give sweeteners.

One difference being Grimes is a ROOKIE, with 587 minutes of professional playing time so far.

Oh sure, not damning Grimes overall, just noting that that one play was very much Ben Simmons Game 7.

Investing in young players, and pursuing a strategy of asset collection until you’re starting to turn the corner and actually win games– that’s the kind of patience I can get behind.

Holding onto Alec Burks and Nerlens Noel, because maybe your team of veteran mercs on market value contracts might turn it around and start making a real push at that #10 seed… that’s not the good kind of patience.

Remember when Joe Rogan had that COVID conspiracy doctor on his show and his fans were all, “You say ‘trust the science,’ but when we bring a doctor to discuss COVID, you still get mad!”?

Yeah.

It’s funny, there’s a decent chance we’ll go into the ASG break on a 4 games winning streak, enough to keep the 10th spot hopes alive (POR, OKC and today’s Nets are all beatable)…

Then one can read the post-ASG schedule.
