Kobe Bryant died in a helicoper crash in Calabasas Sunday morning … TMZ Sports has confirmed.

Kobe was traveling with at least 3 other people in his private helicopter when it went down. A fire broke out. Emergency personnel responded, but nobody on board survived. 5 people are confirmed dead. We’re told Vanessa Bryant was not among those on board.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.

EDIT: An L.A. Times writer has confirmed it as well.

Damn… just, damn.

I know we’ve poked fun at the Kobe-assist thing and all, but damn – what a horrible way to go for such a legend and bad-ass player. I didn’t have any emotional attachment to him one way or another as a fan, but this whole city out here is about to be sick. Just… damn. I’m sad.

My most haunting memory of Kobe was seeing him play live at MSG at age 18 in his 3rd NBA game. He only played for 3 minutes and didn’t make a basket, but I said to my friend “wow, he moves a lot like Jordan…”

The source of the daughters story was an abc radio news station. Not confirmed by any other source.

This truly is one of those things that leaves u at a total loss of words much like Stu Scott’s passing. My heart hurts so bad for Vanessa and the kids. It sickens me when people who do good die like this.

Wait..there’s a report that said the girls were in it too? I hadn’t seen that one.

The tweet about his kids being on the helicopter has been removed. Let’s hope that wasn’t true.

I mean, it’s horrible that any four other people were on that helicopter but my heart sank when I read that tweet.

I know media outlets do difficult and crucial work, but jesus fucking christ some things are more important than being “first.”

12:35 PM PT — Kobe’s daughter Gianna Maria — aka GiGi — was also on board the helicopter and died in the crash … reps for Kobe tell TMZ Sports. She was 13.
We’re told they were on their way to the Mamba Academy for a basketball practice when the crash occurred. The Academy is in nearby Thousand Oaks.

He was still so damn young, and the daughter who played basketball was in the crash too according to TMZ… that’s so horrible. I’m insanely afraid of helicopters and I really don’t think I’ll ever board one.

Mike fwiw it wasn’t a case of people spreading rumors needlessly. ABC news’ senior national news correspondent Matt Gutman reported it on the air.

I just saw the news, I’m stunned. Conflicting reports on who else was on board but it sounds like at least one daughter was. Awful news.

Hope in the aftermath that the media doesn’t whitewash Kobe’s personal life by ignoring the very credible rape allegation. That said, this is still horrible news, and a huge loss for the basketball world–nevermind the death of his daughter and the others on the plane.

The Athletic just reported his 13 yr old daughter Gianna was on that copter too.

Thinking about this game which sort of sums up Kobe’s career (on the court) for me. He was a very good player, but never as good as the media made him out to be, but didn’t seem to know that himself.
