It’s good to see R.J. Barrett start to come around. We need this draft to have as many potentially good players as possible. In no particular order (other than Zion over everyone) I’d be happy with Zion, Morant, Bol^2, and Hunter. I still want to see more from Barrett, Little, Langford, and definitely Reddish.

Bill Simmons suggested that Dallas use the expiring contract of Wes Matthews as a trade chip to try to make the postseason. Marc Stein had an interesting answer when asked about this (via The Ringer): “Look, I’ll tell you this. They are looking and they want to do something. There is no question about that. Donnie Nelson is always active. And so they’ve got chips. I don’t think it has materialized what is out there yet. We’re not even at December 15. But they’re always on the look out to do something.”

    Go get John Wall, Nelson!

The former Knicks player and coach will get another chance to prove his coaching worth

Did Fisher play for us when I wasn’t looking?

John Wall? Tim Hardaway Jr would be a perfect fit on Dallas.

I agree, but I filled my yearly quota of smart Knicks trades that will never be completed.

It’s good to see R.J. Barrett start to come around.

It really is. It’s also funny that ESPN called Zion’s game a “rough night” because of the two missed dunks. Of course it was still 18 points on 14 shots with 3 steals and 12 rebounds, but yeah, rough night.

I love it. Keep calling .600 TS% a “rough night” and minimize Barrett’s bad games. Make people believe Barrett is the next LeBron, whether he is or not. We will likely need Zion to slip, and if Barrett puts together enough “upside” performances, it might just happen.

Did Fisher play for us when I wasn’t looking?

you have to read it as player in the “is Matt out of town” sense

Going from Wes Matthews to Tim Hardaway Jr. would be the most lateral move I’ve ever seen in the NBA.

For me it’s pretty clear the Mavs are looking at Beal, and well, I also don’t think it’s a big move towards contention, but it makes sense thinking about Mark Cuban type moves.

I did a search for players who had the following minimum numbers in their rookie year: .560 TS%, 25% USG, 500 MP.

Here’s the list of names and ages:

    Sabonis (31)
    Chris Copeland (28)
    Robinson (24)
    Mourning (22)
    Embiid (22)
    Walter Berry (22)
    Jordan (22)
    Duncan (21)
    O’Neal (20)
    Irving (19)
    Doncic (19)

It took Cuban 12 years to put a championship team around Dirk. I wonder if history will repeat itself.

If anyone had doubts about how overrated DeRozan is, note that the Spurs are the 29th defense. They were 3rd last year without Kawhi. Obviously not implying that is all DeRozan’s fault as that’s not humanly possible and they are missing plenty including Murray, Anderson and Green (told you he wasn’t washed yet!) , but DeRozan has always been a significant negative on D as wings go.

One of the espn stat guys tweeted this out:

    Updated unassisted dunk leaders:
    1. Giannis 48

^ It’s Hardaway and Kanter for Beal and Jason Smith’s expiring.

Beal and Wall hate each other and Wall (hopefully) isn’t going anywhere.

Beal makes $7mm more than Hardaway but is like good and shit. He’s definitely not $25mm a year good, but he might be $7mm better than Hardaway good.

The Knicks are probably at 0 as a team unless someone ran a steal back the other way that I forgot about.

Whenever ‘unassisted’ is part of the criteria with the Knicks, you have to be more optimistic.

In any universe in which the Wizards are considering this we’re including a minimum of 2 1st rounders, so no. Of their “big 3” Beal is the one with real value (unless some team really is dumb enough to talk themselves into Wall). If they decide to break their team up the Lakers and about 20 other teams would beat that offer in a nanosecond.

    actually we have 32

Wow. Do you have a breakdown? I’m just curious.

    Ha! Good point.

    My Hanukkah Wishes:

    * I hope we continue losing, end up 3-4th place on tankathon, end up with 1/2, and pick Zion.

    – We whiff on Durant. I have a recurring vision that starting on that road with a young crew + KD ends up with a lot of picks and young players getting traded over 2 seasons, in bad trades, that ends up with Durant leaving us for another destination with us gutted for years.

    * I hope Frank starts playing in a week or two with some fire in his belly, and that somehow converts to statistically significant offensive production. Because he reallllly doesn’t need more than a decent jumper to start being very useful to any team.

    – I hope they somehow end up getting Trier to agree to a two-year contract, so that he is at least an RFA at the end of it all. Not that I love him, it’s more of a sign of competency to me.

    – I hope that I lose eight pounds. I eat oatmeal for breakfast, greek yogurt and a low-carb bar for lunch, I stay at the same weight despite what I keep myself from eating, but at the same time I’m aware that those weekly bagels are the problem, but at the same time I forget about the bagels because I love bagels. Also I don’t exercise at all.

Yeah, plus every putback counts as an unassisted dunk, and Vonleh anda Robinson have had some definitely. Obviously an oversight on the Kobe assist by the scorers tables everywhere but what can we do.

The problem with Beal is that he’s only a small upgrade over Hardaway, I think he’s better but his reputation as an all-star makes it so that he would be a lot more expensive to get through trade than he should be. I like him as a player, I just don’t think there’s a way to get him that works for us.

Short story, off-topic: Before my company moved me out here, and due to a requisition issue that delayed our move, I lived in an extended-stay hotel with ex-Lady Jowles for four months on the company’s dime. (It was miserable, but I like money, so I stayed.)

A couple months earlier, my car had been stolen and recovered the same day, no big deal, but my insurance agent (fuck you, GEICO) reported that I was living in CT and NY failed to notify me that my car was registered in NY but insured in CT. This is a big no-no, and that’s why you always follow the law when it comes to license/registration transfers between states. They offered two choices: give up your license or de-register your car for 60 days. You can guess which one I took.

Long story short, I lived in the CT suburbs in an extended stay hotel without a car for two months. The nearest grocery store was a 20 minute walk, my gym was no longer reachable without serious effort, and the Five Guys across the street beckoned when I got a craving for food. Put on 10 pounds of pure fat in a matter of months, which is a heroic feat. I’d always been slim, but I can tell you that 183 lbs. on a 5’10” frame is not a good look for me.

    (cont.)

Beal makes $7mm more than Hardaway but is like good and shit. He’s definitely not $25mm a year good, but he might be $7mm better than Hardaway good.

I don’t think Beal is actually good. He’s not bad, but his 2016 season is starting to look like an outlier, and he’s getting paid like it was his average. The Wizards would probably never do that trade, but it’s something that would make the Knicks like 2-3 wins better. On the other hand, Beal is probably a lot more tradeable than Timmy. I’d probably be able to talk myself into the deal if I was the GM of the Knicks, but I don’t think this Knicks team should make the trade because they’d want to keep Beal

When I hit my own personal rock-bottom, I did some research about new diets that were feasible, affordable and sustainable. Knowing that keto was out of the question, and the whole juice-cleanse thing was both total bullshit (artificial caloric restriction) and obnoxiously expensive, the thing that worked for me was intermittent fasting. I fast for 12-16 hours four days a week and then eat high-protein, normal meals otherwise. Now that I’m back to lifting 3-4 days a week I need more calories in my meals, but I still drink black-ish coffee in the morning and begin eating at noon on most weekdays.

The myth that breakfast is that most important meal of the day — “kickstart your metabolism!” — is a lie. Oatmeal is a performance-athlete meal, even in the little sugary packet style that gives you about 90% carbs in a 250 kCal serving. Fasting will not “slow” your metabolism.

Try fasting 3x a week, and increase your protein intake to at least 0.5g per pound of bodyweight. The most important thing for weight loss is caloric deficit (insulin regulation is also important, as well as getting complete protein sources). If you’re not burning calories with exercise, the only other way for caloric deficit is to simply eat less energy than you consume.

It’s sort of my advice for my friends with money problems, too: for most of us, it’s logistically easier to spend less money than it is to make more — easier to consume fewer calories than to burn more.

Oh, and I lost 30 lbs. of fat with fasting, less alcohol and exercise. I still eat breakfast cereal every night somewhere after squatting and taking my “medicine.”

I don’t think Beal is actually good. He’s not bad, but his 2016 season is starting to look like an outlier, and he’s getting paid like it was his average.

Yeah, that’s kinda my opinion, too. I was surprised by the poster who thought we’d have to add two picks to the trade.

I think he’s better than Hardaway and more likely to improve. I think I’d rather have him at $25mm for 2.5 years than Hardaway at $18mm for 2.5 years but I’m not convinced.

Nobody older than 7 should eat breakfast cereal.

    Older chronologically or emotionally?

Don’t ever talk to me or my 5 lbs. bag of Cinnamon Toast Crunch again

    Older chronologically or emotionally?

age ain’t nothin but a number

I would absolutely do that trade just because we could flip Beal for other assets, whereas THJ is probably perceived as a negative/neutral value and wouldn’t get anything back in a deal. If we had to keep Beal, then it doesn’t make sense. Might as well stick with the lower salary in THJ.

I love knicksfilmschool but they had a really bizarre take on Trier in their most recent podcast, namely that they think Trier will sign the full BAE but only for this season, then test free agency. In what world would we offer him $3.5MM for 1 year when we could just unilaterally convert his 2-way into a minimum NBA contract? IMHO the negotiation should be – 2 years at full (or partial) BAE (max of 6.9MM total after which he would still be restricted) vs. we just convert your 2-way to a 1-year minimum contract ($838K guaranteed). My guess is a kid who hasn’t made any money yet will take the full BAE and $7MM over the unknown of RFA + injury risk etc.

Don’t ever talk to me or my 5 lbs. bag of Cinnamon Toast Crunch again

age ain’t nothin but a number

    A cereal number?

    #WockaWocka

No one under 7 should eat breakfast cereal either. Recipe for some very unruly children.

I think fasting is excellent too but I prefer to skip dinner. I do think if you stick with something like Lose It and focus on eating healthy it’s very possible to meet a weight loss target, even without exercise. Not easy but not impossible.

I hope that I lose eight pounds. I eat oatmeal for breakfast, greek yogurt and a low-carb bar for lunch, I stay at the same weight despite what I keep myself from eating, but at the same time I’m aware that those weekly bagels are the problem, but at the same time I forget about the bagels because I love bagels. Does this sound exactly like the Knicks’ plan to build a contender or what?

age ain’t nothin but a number

I’m 41 now but I’ve managed to go through life with the same picture on my driver’s license from the day I was 17 that day, and the night before was the first time I ever consumed alcohol. It’s like my reverse picture of Dorian Gray. I’m not growing up until they make me change that picture.

I have to agree with Jowles on breakfast. IMHO, After a cup of coffee, it’s not really necessary. Then again I also forgo dairy for almond milk and vegan cheese.

When I tried to go vegan (as a competitive cyclist), I lost 10 lbs over the next 2 months without any increase in training volume. Unfortunately, I also lost some muscle mass, so I had to add meat to my diet again.

Yeah, that’s kinda my opinion, too. I was surprised by the poster who thought we’d have to add two picks to the trade.

I’m not basing that on my opinion of Beal but on my perception of how the league values him. 25 year-old all-star with name recognition. You’re not getting him for THJ (could make a good case that he’s a negative asset) and expiring salary. That just isn’t a realistic assessment of his value.

Two picks is probably more than anyone would give up for just Beal but in my mind part of that price in the hypothetical trade was for taking back THJ. Maybe if the Wizards value THJ as worth his money (not impossible) then it’s more like a single 1st and some other goody. You’re not getting Beal in a deal that’s just an exchange of bad salaries though. I’m confident the league places a positive value on him even at his current salary.

I get that. I was counting Kanter as an asset for them, though. Maybe that’s what I did wrong. They miss Gortat a lot and Howard’s given them nothing.

I know we know he’s shit but he does put up those 25-25 games that can fool teams like the wizards.

Even the smart conventional wisdom is that Beal is clearly the Wizards best player and the most valuable asset they have. They may be right about that, but the reason the Wizards aren’t good is their best players aren’t as good as people think they are. Beal, Porter and Wall are all making huge money and none of them is particularly above average. I used to like Porter, but at 24 million per I think I’d pass, Beal is paid like an all-star and he’s not while Wall is probably better than the current conventional wisdom (he’s about as good as Beal) is on maybe the league’s worst contract and is blatantly not trying.

I am currently researching a book on human nutrition and I can tell you a few things that is backed by peer reviewed research:

Avoid sugar ( sucrose, hi fructose corn syrup and excessive whole fruit consumption) and simple starches (bread, rice, pasta, oatmeal, etc). Keeping insulin levels minimal is the most important pillar in achieving longevity.

Do not eat a high protein diet unless you are over 65. The minimum protein intake for an adult male is .31-.35g/pound of body weight. If you exercise a lot you need a little more but not a lot more. High protein intake increases your incidence of cancer substantially my stimulating IGF-1 and mTOR (you can look it up Jowles )

Low Protein Intake Is Associated with a Major Reduction in IGF-1, Cancer, and Overall Mortality in the 65 and Younger but Not Older Population:

Add DHA and EPA to your diet via salmon, sardines, mackerel, anchovies , etc. Good quality Krill oil capsules can do the trick if you hate fish.

Cliff’s notes: very low sugar/simple starch diet, mostly plant based with moderate protein and fish oil produces the best out come.

Suggested reading…. The Longevity Diet by Dr Valter Longo.

Jowles is also correct for many reasons that fasting is good in many of its iterations: time restricted feeding, intermittent fasting, fasting mimicking diets and water fasts of < 5 days. (triggers autophagy)

Does this sound exactly like the Knicks’ plan to build a contender or what?

Heh, yeah, it was a true story too.

Jowles, you eat that Cinnamon Toast Crunch brother[muffled bagel chewing sounds]

By the way, as a public service announcement, although ‘calories’ are still mentioned everywhere in the medical literature, they are pretty much meaningless. It’s a ‘stat’ just like WP, but has it’s flaws, in that it overemphasizes fat content, whereas unsaturated fat (and to a lesser extent, saturated fat) is not as bad as we once thought. It’s really all in carb starving yourself to lose weight.

I honestly think Timmy is pretty good, possibly slightly overpaid but not so bad. I like Brad Beal a lot but giving up lots of assets to get him doesn’t seem like a great idea.

Timny’s defense has been pretty terrible but I think that is at least partially due to a combination of no Porzingis plus the offensive load he has been carrying.

His efficiency has also taken a hit recently, but I think also to some extent that he’s the only guy on the team that can actually create anything off the dribble or at the end of the clock and so he is often taking shots he shouldn’t take (sometimes it is his fault, other times not). The major red flag this year is a drop in his 2P%, which is a combination of really poor finishing at the rim (49% this year, career is low-mid 60s — maybe because the lane is always clogged with Kanter and Robinson?) and him taking more bad mid-rangers than previous.

My impression is that when KP comes back and Timmy’s usage goes from 28–> 22 range that he will be be more efficient and his defense will improve.

Overall though, lots of things have already improved in Timmy’s game. FTR is much higher, assist rate is climbing every year, and he remains a low turnover guy.

Last season I said the Spurs were being badly mismanaged and were done. They looked old, had a few bad contracts, and the pipeline was not looking so great. I should have listened to myself and put some money where my mouth was.

They aren’t quite as bad as they look though. They don’t have Murray or Green. Gasol is hardly playing. Kyle Anderson is playing below expectations and Aldridge has been terrible so far. Some of that could turn.

Quite frankly, they were badly mismanaged and it was very easy to see.

That’s a team that should have been blown up a couple of years ago, but Pop was probably too old to accept a tank and full rebuild. I doubt he was willing to lose for 4-6 years just to hand the team off to some other coach when it was time for him retire and the team was just getting good.

I honestly think Timmy is pretty good, possibly slightly overpaid but not so bad.

He has a negative BPM, just like he has every other year he’s been in the NBA. Below league average TS%. Doesn’t do anything but shoot on offense. Terrible defender.

If he’s “slightly overpaid” then what player is badly overpaid?

It’s really all in carb starving yourself to lose weight.

    That’s my experience.

I can eat all the protein I want without any weight issues. If I limit pasta, pizza, bread, potatoes, beer, orange juice, snack chips, cake, candy, and soda I lose weight. Most of that is pretty easy for me, but the pasta and pizza are tough for me to avoid and seem to do serious damage quickly when I overdo it.

    @47

I’m with you that the Spurs are really bad, but saying they should have blown it all up a couple of years ago is revisionist story. Two years ago they won 61 games and Kawhi was playing like a MVP candidate, you don’t blow up a team that has this kind of guy on the roster.

I know it’s cool to say “hey maybe the Spurs aren’t as well managed as we thought”, and like we discussed before they should have done much better than get DeRozan for Kawhi, but saying they should have blown up and rebuilt before Leonard had that injury that kickstarted everything is plain wrong. How would they possibly know that Kawhi would get injured by Pachulia, then miss the entire next season with another injury then demand a trade?

If anything they should have used his trade as a rebuild, also trying to get out of the Aldridge contract if possible, that I agree with. But you don’t blow up a 61 win team with a top 3 player in the league.

The question with Timmy is similar to the question with KP last year. He’s being asked to do a lot more on offense than his skill set if ready for. And since the team doesn’t have a legitimate #1 option, defenses are focusing on him more than they would if he was a 2nd or 3rd option. How much that’s impacting his efficiency is more or less a guess. There’s no magic formula that plugs in skill set, shot selection, defensive adjustments etc… and spits out a new number. On one level it’s very individual and on another level it’s dependent on teammates. Suffice to say he’d probably be more efficient if KP was playing and we had a real starting PG.

They aren’t quite as bad as they look though. They don’t have Murray or Green. Gasol is hardly playing. Kyle Anderson is playing below expectations and Aldridge has been terrible so far. Some of that could turn.

most of that can’t turn. Murray is out for the year. Green is on another team. Kyle Anderson is on another team. Gasol is a 38 year old with a stress fracture in his foot so I wouldn’t waste too much candle wax on the vigil.

49% this year, career is low-mid 60s — maybe because the lane is always clogged with Kanter and Robinson

probably not because the lane is clogged as much as the Knicks being such a poor passing team, running such an iso heavy offense. Of Timmy’s restricted area shots in the last two years before this, 31pct and 46pct were unassisted respectively. This year it is 76pct. Pretty big delta. And he’s not getting there at a higher rate.

    @50

The right move was to try to rebuild around Leonard, but not with Gasol, Aldridge, Rudy Gay and guys like that. Those guys were clearly at or close to the downside and there wasn’t enough up and coming talent besides Leonard to improve the team quickly.

But this is where spreadsheet management runs into the real world.

Try telling Pop back then we are blowing it all up because the team is about to start declining. Then lay out a 4 year rebuild around Leonard, Murray, Anderson, Bertrans, draft picks and whatever they could get for the veterans and caps space. He’s not going to be happy being in the lottery for a couple of years and Leonard would have asked for a trade (which he ultimately did anyway because he saw the handwriting on the wall and wants to win).

In a world where TH2 is your 3rd best scorer and 4th best starter, you have a good player. I’d rather just get rid of him and promote Dotson to the starting 2 spot. TH2 would be a much more valuable player if he were a sma forward.

Avoid sugar ( sucrose, hi fructose corn syrup and excessive whole fruit consumption) and simple starches (bread, rice, pasta, oatmeal, etc).

You get all your carbs from plants, Bob? I can’t do a low-carb diet but I’m also not a big veggie guy. I tend to just suck it up and go with the whole wheat breads, brown rices, legumes, et al. I know I’d be slimmer if I didn’t, but I’m ok with suboptimal.

Literally all he does is score, though. If you have two better scorers on the team, why do you want him as your 3rd best player making $18mm?

Mostly. You can eat a little pasta (maybe 2 oz dry) and make a sauce with broccoli sauted with garlic an EV olive oil. Carbs in the form of fiber aren’t digested and absorbed into the blood stream and don’t evoke much of an insulin response.

The average american diet consists of about 300g of sugars and starches a day. I try to judiciously keep simple carbs < 50g and protein <75g. I use a ton of olive oil.

I began this research 4 years ago after a dear friend died at 60 of a sudden heart attach on the golf course. I lost 60 pounds from 240 to 180 in 4 months without even thinking about it. The fat will melt off you with a low sugar.simple starch diet. and I'm 1834 years later.

I DO fast for 4-5 days 4-6 times a year for the autophagy benefits.

My blood lipids made a marked improvement: triglycerides from 140 to 43, Hdl from 64 to 97 and LDL-c from 140 to 94. No statin can do what diet can……

When you plug those numbers into the Framinghan Heart study algorithm, my heart age declined 9 years.

but the reason the Wizards aren’t good is their best players aren’t as good as people think they are.

Lol, I just got into an argument on Knicks reddit about this. Dude was claiming that the Wizards never made it out of the 2nd round because they didn’t have an “identity” or good culture and we were building ours.

You get all your carbs from plants, Bob?

I’m pretty sure everyone does. Wheat, rice, etc. are plants after all.

Legumes like Garbanzo beans (chick peas the major ingredient in hummus and other legumes like lentils are fine) if you don’t go crazy with them because the carbs are complexed with other molecules that are digested more slowly and don’t give the insulin spike sugars, breads and other grains give.

If you integrate the function of insulin response to food, the idea is to minimize the area under the curve with minimal spikes.

You’re right, Frank. We’d be wasting the BAE to give him more money this year in an effort to make him happy so he’d be grateful and want to re-sign with us. That does sound Knicksy, though, doesn’t it?

I’m pretty sure everyone does. Wheat, rice, etc. are plants after all

This is why one has to be careful about what you write. I get most of my carbs from very low glycemic index/high fiber plants: Broccoli, Cauliflower Brussel Sprouts… saute them up with garlic and EVOO and yummie! Some garbanzo beans (I love hummus).

No sugar, fruit juice, bread, very little pasta…. (I am Italian)

Bleacher Report just mocked Kevin Porter Jr to us in their mock draft, with Nassir Little and Ja Morant still on the board. Porter Jr is impressive and plays a lot like James Harden (minus the passing), but I don’t think I’d pass on Nassir Little. He’ll begin to shine in conference play, but I really wouldn’t mind either player.

Broccoli is a backup. Substitute broccoli raab for broccoli and you have a dish like grandma used to make.

I love these kind of threads…

in some cases we’re thousands of miles away from one another (in many ways)…

reading stuff like this though makes it seem as though we are all almost in the same room…

I was 5’10” once jowles…damn it if joint decompression and fucking gravity haven’t brought me down to about five foot eight and three quarters…

this universe has some crappy game rules…gravity and the whole life/death cycle thing being up there on the top of the list…

my one nutritional recommendation – resist everything but temptation…

that generally works for a lot other stuff too…

took the day off, it’s almost one now…gonna get out of bed and go eat some pancakes with lots of butter and strawberry jam on them…wash it all down with a couple of glasses of cold whole milk…

hmmmm, now that I think of it – chips and salsa with it sounds pretty good…

I’m not expecting good things, but, I hope we beat the celtics tonight…

draft position aside, I always hope the knicks perform well on a national tv broadcast…

Literally all he does is score, though. If you have two better scorers on the team, why do you want him as your 3rd best player making $18mm?

He’s about average in terms of efficiency
He’s well above average in terms of passing for a SG – 71st percentile in assist% per cleaning the glass
He’s well above average in terms of not throwing the ball away, 70+% pretty much every year of his career.

He’s really miscast as a 1st option though. Even as a 2nd option I think he’d be ok, and as a 3rd option when he can go back to his Atlanta shot profile (~24% of his shots from midrange instead of 34% this year) he would be really good.

Of Timmy’s restricted area shots in the last two years before this, 31pct and 46pct were unassisted respectively. This year it is 76pct. Pretty big delta. And he’s not getting there at a higher rate.

This is exactly it – he’s being asked to be the creator and finisher right now, and he’s just not quite there yet. CTG notes that he’s in the 95th percentile of unassisted rim FGAs, so he’s doing all the work.

Put KP back on the court and that gets a lot better. Put KP and a real PG on the floor and that gets lots and lots better.

Even as it is, without really any significant offensive talent around him, he’s 16th in the league in offensive RPM (all positions)

The 3rd best scorer on a good team (if not on a rookie deal) generally makes $15+MM. Timmy’s contract isn’t exactly an asset, but I don’t think it’s untradeable at all. To teams that are over the cap going forward and/or aren’t FA destinations he’s probably an actual asset.

I was on the overworked lawyers diet a couple years back. Consisted mostly of coffee, cigarettes and chewing gum………I wouldn’t recommend it. That being said, nothing will keep you more regular than a cigarette and a cup of coffee every morning.

On actual basketball matters, I love reading that Frank is starting to show some emotion via media reports. Hopefully the fire is lit under him and we see him toe to toe v Kyrie today.

I tried a 2 day fasting intermittent diet for awhile before I returned to teaching in September. I found that limiting my diet to 600 calories twice a week also gradually lowered my appetite on off days.

My weight dropped to 176 in early September, but has since risen over 180 again. I do enjoy the holidays, so I always gain a bit in November and December no matter what.

I’m going to return to it in January after the holidays and teaching are over.

The myth that breakfast is that most important meal of the day — “kickstart your metabolism!” — is a lie.

Yeah, I had to try this to believe it. But sure enough it’s true. I now run 20+ miles a day several times a week before I eat a bite of food and I feel strong as hell and don’t bonk out like I used to. And my friend who is an Ironman and a personal trainer was diagnosed as pre-diabetic and stopped eating before workouts and he also performs even longer and stronger now. (Neither one of us has body fat to lose, but there is a weight loss element to this too, as the body burns what’s in the stomach first, then turns to what’s in reserve. So really, breakfast isn’t helping anyone, and Michael Phelps probably wasn’t benefiting as much as he thought he was from his diet:)

It’s a weird set of circumstances that those deals are actually good deals. This Knicks season was supposed to be a season of cheap Knicks tickets, but they’re playing too well and there are too many likable players for the prices to go down. “Too many likable players” is a good problem to have, of course, just noting that the ticket prices are a lot higher than a typical 8-17 basketball team as a result.

My family has a history of high cholesterol and my (inattentive former) PCP was about to throw me on a statin willy nilly when my LDL was borderline high (HDH and tris were great). I leaned into fasting, stopped drinking on weekdays altogether, and tried to replace dinner carbs with green vegetables. Boom! Dropped back down to perfect levels. I am one of the few in my large extended family who remained thin and fit past 25, though, so I suspect that my lifestyle is healthier in virtually every way. My sister, often asked if she were my twin for much of my twenties, lives in Astoria and really leans into the sedentary, tiki-bar loving lifestyle, which is why I look 5 years younger despite being 3 years older.

Perhaps surprisingly, I defer to bobneptune entirely on this subject, although I prefer that my delts and glutes look like tumors themselves, so I think I’m going to keep eating grilled salmon and chicken breast until my wife no longer has interest in manually inspecting them for new growth. ; )
