Knicks 2017 Game Thread: at Cavs

The unbeaten New York Knicks head to the swing stage of Ohio to match up with last season’s champions the Cleveland Cavaliers. The winner of this game will be at the top of the Eastern Conference, and the new look Knicks are looking to establish themselves as the league’s premier team. Noted sports expert and AM Radio host Craig Carton claimed that New York was the third best team in the Conference, but Knick fans won’t let his pessimism damper their hopes for the 2017 season. This Knicks team is so loaded, that the odds for them winning a championship has dropped 500% since they were first announced. Optimistic Gardeners will have to move quick to lay bets if they want to ensure a comfortable retirement!

LET’S GO KNICKS!

Sound is off on my TV. I am focused on this laptop screen. I can’t stand watching the Cavs get their rings. Uggghhhh.

Kahnzy – no Shump! Shump! ????

WE ARE DOOMED!

Wouldn’t that mean I’m rooting for the Cavs then?

So conflicted and confused.

Knicks just posted a video of Noah angrily dribbling in the hallway with the sounds of the ring ceremony in the background. I was so hoping Ron Baker would wander out of the locker room brushing his teeth.

Come on, Knicks! It’s always fun to beat the defending champs. I remember when the Knicks beat the Rockets near the start of the 1994-95 season. It meant nothing but it felt so good.

I love you all.
But I love the Knicks even more.
Let’s have a great season.
The time has come.
To be great again.

Hot take: Rose goes 4-17, board attributes it to “rust.”

Porzingis is unfair as a one-on-one post defender. They need to legalize stilts for some of these dudes. He’s 7 inches taller than LeBron!

the most frustrating thing this season is going to be rose turning the ball over after leaving his feet countless times….

Noah’s O boards are awesome but he might be more valuable on a team where those extra possessions could actually be turned into points

Rose scores on his first play – That’s the Derrick Rose I thought we’d get!!!

Rose then turns it over and misses two shots – That’s the Derrick Rose I thought we’d get ??!?!?!

Of course it would be stupid to suggest that a player who has played one preseason game in 6 months is rusty…

Sloppy so far. Glimpses of what might be.
Rose has turned over too much, but he looks quick.
The offense needs to move

I think Melo fades in this high octane offense after big spurts. He always looks winded.

Horny needs to learn quickly that he can never have a lineup on the floor w/o both Melo and KP. One of them needs to always be on the court.

If the Cavs bench is going to toast our bench like this, I see myself turning the game off in about 30 minutes.

Think I’d rather have Sasha over Jennings at this point

And Lance really really really needs to learn how to shoot again

@66

Webber was saying something about Hornacek using “two units” with contrasting styles and I was all… uh… that’s not going to really work

Horny needs to learn quickly that he can never have a lineup on the floor w/o both Melo and KP. One of them needs to always be on the court.

This.

i want to be optimistic about LT but he’s continued to look really really really bad…..

Lance really needs to shoot well to be a positive for the team. If he doesn’t, he’s not a negative, but he sure isn’t helping.

Melo has played well. Everybody else has pretty much sucked. I guess Noah did okay while he was in there.

There are a number of differences between Lebron and Melo. But that ability to fast break like a freight train is one of the biggest….

Say what you want about how the Knicks are playing, at least it’s more tolerable than this late period Jay-Z they’re playing during the interstitials.

There are a number of differences between Lebron and Melo. But that ability to fast break like a freight train is one of the biggest….

HGH is a hell of a drug.

Can’t you guys tell that we’re lulling them into a false sense of security and then we’re going to pulverize them?

I imagine it’ll get better than this but doesn’t look like we’ll be very aesthetically appealing

Seriously, do guys really think this team will compete with the Cavaliers in the ECF?

Our bench will destroy us.

FTFY

Glimpses of what might be.
Rose has turned over too much, but he looks quick.

Rose is playing like one of those guys that looks awful on paper.

I imagine it’ll get better than this but doesn’t look like we’ll be very aesthetically appealing

U N A E S T H E T I C

Seriously, do guys really think this team will compete with the Cavaliers in the ECF?

ECF? ECF??

Not enjoying roses play so far but he does have some remnants of that feline quickness

Rose has been rusty but thats understandable. Maybe not from you fans who critique every play but overall I like his defense on Kyrie So far. The spacing is terrible and no one knows what they’re doing on Offense.

Can’t you guys tell that we’re lulling them into a false sense of security and then we’re going to pulverize them?

You are the literal worst.

Well, only being down 9 at this point, as bad as they’ve played, is encouraging.

On the other hand, Cleveland might be due to start hitting some outside shots.

Haven’t seen a Knick guard finish like that on the break since… well, Jeremy Lin…

[Hello darkness my old friend]

Its hilarious how our starting lineup has too many guys who look for their own shot while our bench has too many guys who can’t create a shot. Hornacek needs to do a better job rotating guys.

ECFingis!

I’ll be damned if he’s traded to the Celts, DRed. Stop it.

If we can just get our opponents to miss wide open threes all year long we should be pretty good

Getting the shitty brother is one of my favorite long running Knicks subplots

Justin Holiday, Chris Smith, who else? Drawing a blank.

Getting the shitty brother is one of my favorite long running Knicks subplots

Plumlee?

hmm looks like starters are pretty good.

Looks like Horny is already mixing the TWO UNITS together. Potentially promising.

Getting the shitty brother is one of my favorite long running Knicks subplots

Robin Lopez?

Plumlee?

Aren’t there multiple shitty Plumlee brothers?

Then again we do have the worst one.

Justin Holiday, Chris Smith, who else? Drawing a blank.

Well, it is said that Juancho is the good Hernangomez… but I guess it remains to be seen.

Holliday is having a nice little game so far. He might deserve a more prominent role off the bench.

I think I prefer Robin.

Was going to say, with Brook’s foot problems and Robin’s defense and influence on team rebounding, I’d say they’re of similar value at this point.

The Cavs are missing a lot of good looks and then Shump makes that. Basketball is weird.

Interesting that Holiday is ahead of Sasha in the rotation. He has been the best bench player tonight by a mile so far.

OK. I’ll take being down 3 at the half. The team has to develop chemistry still. Some of the turn overs are a result of that. The bench looked lost.

Hey, I’ll take down by 3 at the half to the defending champs any day of the week.

Looks like our starters have potential, albeit if healthy.

Our defense was pretty awful, if the Cavs had made some wide open 3’s (and by wide open I mean no one within 10 feet) they could easily have 65 points at halftime. They’re 4-21 from downtown.

And KOQ will surely lead the NBA in stupid fouls.

The spacing looks so much cleaner with Porzingis at the 5. Holiday gives them a good Option with his Defense/Shooting when they go small.

Results were pretty darn good. The process wasn’t nearly as good. Waaaaaay too many open threes for Cleveland.

It’s different watching the team with Rose.

Quite refreshing not having the offense reliably grind to a halt when it resets at the top of the key.

I’ll give Rose credit for a good effort on D. He’s been fighting to stay with Irving. I still have nightmares of Calderon’s horrendous D.

Reduce the turnovers and tighten up the 3 pt. D.

In fairness to the Knicks, yes the defense has gifted the Cavs a lot of open shots but we’ve also missed some shots ourselves.

most of bench guys have no idea who to rotate to or when. i don’t think brandon jennings switched to the right guy once. come back, langston!

on the bright side, rose played surprisingly decent man defense on kyrie.

Quite refreshing not having the offense reliably grind to a halt when it resets at the top of the key.

Yeah, refreshing is definitely a good description of the offense.

I LOVE IT

Unmuted by mistake. Barkley says “Knick bench is terrible”. There you go. The gauntlet was thrown!

The bench scoring looked bad b/c Jennings was awful, ball hogging. And I think LT shot and missed a few times…

we’re pretty lucky to be in it… rose shooting too much but can’t fault him for keeping us in it…. porzingis on love is our only mismatch on offense and we’re not really exploiting that at all….

the offense does look very vanilla today….

He said the bench was horrible.
Suggested running KP with second team do they have scoring.

Not surprising that Rose is playing good D. He always gets up for the elite PG’s.

Rose is 6-10 with several lay ups.
A couple fewer turnovers and a couple more assists, and he’d be great

when lance isn’t shooting well he looks like a 45 year old guy at the Y who somehow wandered into an NBA game

Literally the only way LT draws fouls is by getting people to leave their feet and then lurching into them like a homeless man’s D-Wade. And he has the slowest pump fake in the world

Lance is just weird, man

Unmuted by mistake. Barkley says “Knick bench is terrible”. There you go. The gauntlet was thrown!

PISTOLS AT DAWN, BARKLEY!

Honestly should compel us to say that KP missed 5 shots (2/7) and 3 free throws in the first half.

And Lee was 0-3.

So, not just the bench.

@TommyBeer
J. Calderon scored a total of 46 points in the paint over the 2,024 minutes last season.

D Rose has 10 pts in the paint in 16 mins tonight

Everybody is afraid to get Dunked on these days. Porzingis didnt even step on that James Dunk. We gotta take a hard Foul at least.

Might be time to switch over to the World Series.

Yup. Looks like it’s about that time…

Rose has returned to awfulness…

Yeah, clearly the team doesn’t really know what to do with Rose out there.

It’s almost like if you keep giving them open threes that they’ll eventually start making them.

6-15 from the floor, 1 assist, 0 FTA, 4 turnovers in 24 minutes

Yup, that’s Derrick Rose all right!

Its ok to criticize Kp when he messes up. He isn’t communicating on defense at all.

6-15 from the floor, 1 assist, 0 FTA, 4 turnovers in 24 minutes

Yup, that’s Derrick Rose all right!

It was 6-10 at the half. Looks like being only down by 3 at the break gave him some irrational confidence.

The defensive scheming sucks major ass. Time and time again Porzingis– the only big in the game– ends up trying to defend a guard on the perimeter, leaving Carmelo Anthony or Lance Thomas as the only source of rim protection.

Shumpert tried to drive through KP and almost knocked himself out. I guess Porzingis ate his Wheaties.

It’s like the Knicks have not realized that there’s a 7’3 guy on the floor that can shoot over ANYONE.

This. Its why I don’t blame KP. He’s the one getting the short end of the stick with this scheme. Its an awful lot to ask of such a young player.

KUZ IS IN THE GAME
I REPEAT, KUZ IS IN THE GAME

KUZMANIA IS RUNNIN’ WILD, BROTHER

It’s like the Knicks have not realized that there’s a 7’3 guy on the floor that can shoot over ANYONE.

Too many guys busy playing hero ball.

There needs to be a better creation myth for Lebron.

Perhaps he was dipped in a vat of HGH as a child?

He is so freaking good.

LeBron to Kyrie: “I’m tired, go out there and destroy the Knicks by yourself for a while”

Perhaps he was dipped in a vat of HGH as a child?

Get KOQ back in the game to take out his ankle.

Good lord, that 3rd quarter was as horrendous as the 2nd was refreshing. I’m switching to baseball.

Is it too early for a trade for Lou Williams post. He might not pass that much either but at least he’ll get points and get to the FT line.

11 assists, 16 turnovers is ass

If Rose and Jennings don’t look to facilitate this offense will suck pure ass.

Well, no matter what happens, I liked a few things I saw tonight.

Yes, there were a few encouraging things: Rose’s 2nd quarter attacking the basket, Holiday’s strong play, KP and Noah working well together on defense, KP’s groin concussing Shump (j/k hope he doesn’t have an actual concussion.)

Well, no matter what happens, I liked a few things I saw tonight.

There were definitely a little bit of silver mixed in with the clouds. KP, for one, looks pretty darn good. And that’s the most important thing.

Lebron currently has more assists than the Knicks’ team. When is it okay to start missing last years team and who on the team should I miss?

Yes, KP’s development is mission objective #1 forever and always. Anything else is pretty much gravy.

Yeah, the triangle is looking quite triangulated right now.

Here’s the triangle we’re running: Stand 15 feet away from each other, dribble or jab-step the shot clock down a while, make a predictable pass, take a contested shot, rinse, repeat…

Yes, KP’s development is mission objective #1 forever and always. Anything else is pretty much gravy.

Which is why it kind of sucks when the team guards won’t pass to him on the pick and roll/pop.

Bright spots so far:

KP’s deep shooting.
Holliday has looked good.
Kuz instant offense off the bench.

Lots of bad, I know.

Kuz has 3 minutes of NBA experience under his belt and he just chucked up a 4 pointer. I like him.

Yeah. I like Kuz. He’s raw but brings a certain something. He’s long and has good range. I think his 3-point capability will earn him playing time.

Holiday looks good. Should have had him defending Kylie when he went supernova in the 3rd.

And as to why KP is not getting more looks at this point I have no idea.

Jennings is fast becoming my least favorite Knick.
🙂

Hey, let’s get Willy in there for some experience.

If you had told me at the half that Melo would only have 19 at this point in the game, I would have said, “That does not bode well.”

Only 20 minutes for Noah in this game. I guess he’s not 100% healthy? How many years are left on that contract?

Now we have the garbage time squad out there, and Porzingis, who has already played a team-high 31 minutes, is still out there. Okay!

i’m not sure if we have a player who actually knows what a good shot looks like…..

These two point guard sets are painful to watch when you have 0 good point guards

These two point guard sets are painful to watch when you have 0 good point guards

It really is fugly. Like Francis/Marbury but worse.

Overall the team looks pretty much as expected- like a team that’s never played together, playing against the defending champs in their building. First half was interesting though.

These two point guard sets are painful to watch when you have 0 good point guards

What are you talking about? We have Sasha!!!

The first half was interesting because Cleveland missed a lot of wide open threes. The Knicks have not done a lot of good basketball things in this game.

O’Quinn is what Mo Speights would be if Mo Speights did some basketball-related things well

Willy and Kuz are 5/6 off the bench.

To me the most alarming thing is the horrible defense. In the 2nd half, Cleveland started making some of those open looks. What the heck is the deal with KP running around all over the perimeter trying to challenge 3 point shots?

Willy looks like he could make the Triangle work. Has legit post moves and knows when to kick it out.

@309 one high screen and its over. We start switching and scrambling and the Cavs are smart enough to find the man who is inevitably wide open.

Too many problems.

I don’t see what Lance Thomas provides us beyond defense. Brandon Jennings is super reckless. Derrick Rose doesn’t even think about facilitating to his teammates on a drive to the basket, which is poison for the type of offense we have.

Ron Baker covered the over at the end there. There are gamblers across the country who love/hate him right now.

can I revise my prediction

re: Baker, I love him but he really plays below the rim on both ends…might not work to well in today’s NBA

Maybe Courtney Lee should come off Bench for Holiday. Gives 2nd Unit more balance.

What the heck is the deal with KP running around all over the perimeter trying to challenge 3 point shots?

Horny has the genius idea that we should tire him out on defense trying to chase faster, quicker players with his wingspan.

re: Baker, I love him but he really plays below the rim on both ends…might not work to well in today’s NBA

He really did look kind of like a joke out there. He has confidence to spare, though, which is big for a player like him. So hopefully he surprises.

I don’t see what Lance Thomas provides us beyond defense.

I’m skeptical on Thomas as even being a good defender. He did one really good thing last year and that was hit threes. And that was huge. But can he do it again?

I agree. I never saw the major appeal. He just looked good by comparison.

too much drama…
1st game ever for this roster
cavs play together [till the finals] the 2 lastyears
take it easy people

Playing Jennings and Rose together is like wearing two eye patches. I though the Jennings signing was a solid why-not at the time but it’s hard to watch him.

Jenning at $5 million was an easy call in a vacuum. However, what I didn’t like was that it was Jennings at $5 million instead of Galloway for roughly the same money over a few more years, all in the hope that they could open up money to maybe sign Russell Westbrook.

Quick Grades:

Anthony: D. Too much ball stopping and turnovers.
KP: D. Only 5/13 from the floor. Ran around ineffectively on the perimeter on D.
Noah: I/D. 0 pts. in 19 min. Did have 6 rebounds.
Lee: F. 0/5 from the floor. Looked lost out there with Anthony and Rose taking all the shots.
Rose: D. Hero ball, missed shots, turnovers. Rust or business as usual?
Jennings: F. Godawful ballhogging.
OQ: C. Yes, about average for him. 5 rebounds.
LT: D. 1/4. Continues to look slow.
Holiday. C. Faded after a good start. 2/7.
Hernangomez: C. Some nice moves, but a turnover, botched a layup.
Vujacic: I. Only 3 minutes?
Kuz: B. Can score. Can he defend?
Baker: B. Looked good, but garbage time.

Hornacek: D. Rust on offense with Rose coming back a bit expected, but the D was horrible.

porzingis was gonna get exposed against a team like the cavs since all they do is screen n roll and park their big on the 3pt line…. against teams that can do that they’d much rather have him out there than in the paint… i wouldn’t get too caught up with the defense….

the offense on the other hand… was an utter disaster… and i hope hornacek has enough balls to bench rose sooner rather than later…. he had an ok stretch in the 2nd quarter but we had far too many possessions that didn’t see one pass…. melo was another culprit…

it’ll def get better than this but rose with 17 fga, 2 fta, 1 ast and 4 to.. is exactly the kind of line that every worst case scenario involves.. more of that at over 2000 minutes and we’re not hitting 35 wins…

Here’s the thing about guys like Rose. They clearly don’t think that their game was a problem, so why should they change anything?

and i hope hornacek has enough balls to bench rose sooner rather than later…. he had an ok stretch in the 2nd quarter but we had far too many possessions that didn’t see one pass

Good luck on that. This organization has a looooong history of trading for selfish malcontents like him and never hold them accountable. Stephon Marbury comes to mind.

If things go south really quickly I wonder if we can recoup some of the lost value for Rose. My guess is there’s only one team dumb enough to trade for him…and they already did it.

41.95% team eFG for the game. We’ll be alright, once we have better players.

My guess is there’s only one team dumb enough to trade for him…and they already did it.

My dream is that this all a ploy by Phil to force Melo into demanding a trade.

Way too early to call on Hornacek to bench Rose. Now, 10, 12 games from now…let’s see. But who do you bench him for. Jennings??!!

Agreed, you pretty much have to stick with Rose this season. They’re pretty much all in on him this year, ya know?

Holy sh*t guys. The amount of doomsday on the blog is a little ridiculous. Our team hadnt played together at all, changed 9 players this offseason, and played a team that JUST BEAT THE GREATEST TEAM IN NBA HISTORY in their own building. Wtf did you guys expect?

Do you think we should give it until, what, at least the last weekend of OCTOBER before we decide to blow the team up?!?!?

Now, I could see Melo quickly get tired of Rose’s act, though, and speak out. We’ll see.

How would speaking out change Rose’s game, though? This is Rose’s game, good or bad.

The doomsday talk started before the first preseason game, because this team does not project well. This game didn’t change my view much at all.

@347
Oh, I don’ think he’ll change his game. But if Melo were to speak out, that might help Hornacek be able to bench Rose.

However, again, way too early.

Frank, I agree, but 29 point losses are a bit embarrassing, no matter the circumstances. Maybe this will be a useful slap in the face to the team.

I don’t care how many games you play together as a team – a PG who feels comfortable playing his first game taking 17 fg attempts without one assist isn’t a PG with the right mentality.

And the sad thing is that with this lineup, we might not have much time to see these guys play together. This might be as fresh and healthy as we’ll see a team with Noah, Rose, and Melo – each of whom have missed serious games the past couple of years.

Omg Rose is already complaining about the triangle ahahahahahahahahaha, this should be a fun season

That is hilarious. Rose is such a douche. Oh man. Still, I don’t think that changes much. Rose is as Rose does.

i disagree…. there’s no loyalty to either of rose or jennings…. and both on 1 yr deals…. if we’re interested at all in competing this season then we don’t have much margin for error…. the right move was to ease rose into the offense and have him come off the bench…

jennings for all his warts …. shoots less and shoots from deep a lot better…. and rose taking over the offense with bench squads and in less minutes is a lot less damaging and you could play melo and kp longer….
