In that sense, I don’t really think the game tomorrow is all that important. If we win, it will feel about as meaningful as Orlando’s win against us, where you can chalk it up to emotion rather than anything lasting.

Correct, but that’s not the only possibility. And I see this as a rare opportunity to isolate the team’s willingness and ability to show the kind of fight necessary to ever be a contender.

The best case scenario is that we win because we finally made an adjustment, and the adjustment reveals we have developed an effective counter strategy.

In the scenario you described (or even a competitive loss), it may not render the past meaningless, but it means at least we have some heart, that there may be something here worth adding to in the offseason.

    On the negative side:

If our effort is outstanding and we’re still not even competitive…

Or if we simply roll over and die without outstanding effort…

Then something may be irreversibly rotten, and you have to consider pivoting sharply before you waste Brunson’s prime.

Well if we’re chewing cud until the playoffs I’m gonna need to get some new duds. I imagine that umarells might be dressed particularly right.

I cannot get over how bad the bottom of the East is this year. The fucking Sixers are still in the goddamn playoff hunt with this shit! The Celtics have lost six straight and are still in the play-in game at the moment! What the fuck!?

At this rate, the Knicks might get to play the “Getting close to being washed up” Bucks in the first round!

The demise of the Magic is surprising. Was Jalen Suggs really that important or is something else going on there?

This team needs a John Starks. A young, hungry underdog who comes in and kicks the veterans ass. As they are, they’re too established, too complacent.

Correct, but that’s not the only possibility. And I see this as a rare opportunity to isolate the team’s willingness and ability to show the kind of fight necessary to ever be a contender.

I personally don’t really have a question about the team’s “willingness or ability to show the kind of fight necessary to be a contender.” In fact, I think it’s the very lowest consideration on my list.

The best case scenario is that we win because we finally made an adjustment, and the adjustment reveals we have developed an effective counter strategy.

I agree, but only to a point. Making clever pre-game or in-game adjustments is always a thing, but at some point, it comes down to the personnel, and there is a glaring imbalance there. The film analysis Educate_the_weak posted is pretty glaring. Boston is just going to keep running screen actions to target Brunson and KAT. You can’t hide two week defenders vs. a team with the offensive versatility that the Celtics have. There are definitely adjustments that can be made on the offensive end, but I don’t see anything that can magically turn the tide of the possession battle in our favor. In other words, I believe that they will have counters to every adjustment we can possibly make with the personnel we have.

This is less true (to me!) with the Cavs and Thunder, and not true for any other teams. But that’s the way I see it.

In the scenario you described (or even a competitive loss), it may not render the past meaningless, but it means at least we have some heart, that there may be something here worth adding to in the offseason.

Again, I won’t even entertain that question until I see how things fo in April and May. No matter what happens today, there’s still time to gel, to work Mitch in, to lick our wounds and regroup. Miami and Dallas are two examples of team that got to the finals after lots of ups and downs during the regular season. A win or even a competitive loss today would be nice, but in my book, won’t mean a whole lot in the big scheme of things.

I think they need a Mason or a Starks in that they need to find a good player off the scrap heap for minimal cost. I don’t think effort is a problem for this team. They just don’t have the horses to get over the top right now.

“This team needs a John Starks. A young, hungry underdog who comes in and kicks the veterans ass. As they are, they’re too established, too complacent.”

I actually think the John Starks analogy works in the other direction. One of the main reasons we couldn’t get over the top vs. the Bulls was because of the Starks-Jordan matchup.

Heart only gets you so far. Our team has plenty of heart. We need more two-way talent.

Can someone explain to me the bottom of the league 3pt defense ? Is it the players, a rotation issue, or scheme?

Boston is better than us, they are home and we are not 100%. The rest of it will be somewhat random.

The Cavs are a bit more perplexing. I went out on a limb and bet them to win it all, but I did not see them sustaining this elite level. I have to think Atkinson’s impact has been larger than I guessed. And now they are adding more quality players. Now I wish I bet more.

It would be nice if we were at least competitive today. But if we get blown out easily again, maybe we should begin exploring what we can and need to do next year to take another step more seriously.

Can someone explain to me the bottom of the league 3pt defense ? Is it the players, a rotation issue, or scheme?

I’m not a huge Xs and Os guy, but I think teams have two clear targets in our defense. When we help, that leaves someone open. Against mediocre or weak teams we can get away with that more often because they don’t have 5 outside shooters on the court. But against the very good teams you can’t leave anyone open.

The Celtics have lost six straight and are still in the play-in game at the moment! What the fuck!?

It’d be great if it was the Celtics, but yeah, i know you meant the Bulls. 😉

I think overhelping is a big problem. We would be better off holding everybody accountable for their individual matchup rather than constantly giving up open 3’s because we’re in scramble mode.

Our team has plenty of heart.

No, not really. All their starters are already very very rich and established, and you need to mix in some over the top all-in energy in there. In one of Starks’ first games he hit a lackadaisical Ewing on the butt and screened at him “let’s go!” This is the kind of energy I’m talking about.

Starks and Mason had both underdog energy and talent. So yeah.

    can you handle the truth

Donte was essentially John Starks. Brunson and Hart are the guys who should be firing up the team. We don’t need another guy like that.

The stuff about our guys getting complacent because they have been paid is nonsense.

The Celts are excellent specifically because they have legit all-star-level two-way talent at every starting position. There’s not a single guy in their top-6 that you can repeatedly target when you are on offense. I guess you can try to iso Brunson on KP or Horford, or iso KAT on Jrue, Brown, Tatum, or White, but A) they seem to do just fine in those iso matchups in aggregate, and B) when they send help, the result is Josh Hart getting a good look from 3. Most teams will live with that result all day long and twice on Sundays (like today!)

The problem is compounded by the fact that even if Hart gets hot and KAT and Brunson are cooking, it becomes a tit-for-tat thing because we can’t stop them from getting the looks they want. They have 5 players that are bad matchups for Brunson and 4 that are bad matchups for KAT. They run screens to get one of those isos, then spread the floor. Sooner or later, the dam bursts and they go on a 20-4 run in a 2-minute span with Jrue, White, Al, Prichard and Hauser hitting dagger after dagger, or Brown and Tatum alternating straight-line dunks, pull-up 3s, and trips to the FT line.

There is only one answer for us, the same answer that kept the Heat from the most embarrassing playoff loss ever….sprain Tatum’s ankle or blow out his shoulder Julius-style. We only have one guy that can sort of effectively guard him, and screening that guy off is an easy task. Once that happens, it’s over. They are still really good without him, but he’s the guy that we really don’t have an answer for…not with KAT and Brunson both out there.

Can someone explain to me the bottom of the league 3pt defense ? Is it the players, a rotation issue, or scheme?

It’s a lot of things but the most critical is that all the wings have to cheat towards the rim to cover KAT’s deficiencies.

Also their willingness to close out consistently seems to be compromised by fatigue.

When I said we have less than a 1% chance of winning the title in 2025, this is actually part of the 1% scenario I was referring to. [Insert Dr Strangelove flashing 1 finger to Tony Stark gif]

The Knicks allow the 7th fewest 3PA per 100 possessions in the NBA. However, they are allowing the best 3PT% against.

It’s a weird combo. On one hand, it seems like we aren’t just letting teams shoot. But on closer inspection, we are still allowing 36.7 3PA per 100 possessions, which is only 4 attempts less than the the team that allows the most, and 0.5 less than the Celts, who hold teams to 34.6%. Whatever tradeoff we are making to marginally reduce the amount of attempts just isn’t working, possibly because the attempts they are getting are better looks, even if not from better shooters.

If OG is questionable, sounds like the foot is still not completely healed. Very worrisome.

    Donte was essentially John Starks.

A bit less fire and better shooting but yes, agreed. We miss that a lot. Like I said a couple of days ago, add Donte to our bench and we’re a tier 1 contender.

I think we should all just spend the day contemplating that Elfrid Payton played 22 minutes for a team that lost by 53 points to a team with a .421 win/loss record, and he wasn’t on the Knicks.

One regular season game that I think is pretty meaningful is how easily the C’s went into Cleveland and took care of business, in a game where Tatum didn’t have his fastball and Spida and Garland both played well. I think that game was the main reason why Cleveland traded for De’Andre Hunter. Assuming Jarrett Allen can play, next week’s showdown in Boston should be very telling.

On a related note, Cleveland is headed for the second apron next year, and that’s without both Merrill and Jerome, who are UFAs. It will be interesting to see how that goes. They still go 8 deep even without those guys, but they have become pretty important pieces.
