Can’t wait to see the narrative flip after Knicks beat both Cleveland and Boston this week. Get your popcorn ready.
That would be the best, and I’d love to be able to expect that occurrence. Alas…….
This is awesome.
Even better now. đ
Canât wait to see the narrative flip after Knicks beat both Cleveland and Boston this week. Get your popcorn ready.
Both games are on the road. A split would be great news.
First time we played Boston the team was brand new and a lot of things hadn’t been worked out. The next time we played them OG was out.
If OG is playing I think we will be competitive in both games. To feel like we have a good shot to beat them, Mitch would have to be playing and be close to 100%. That’s unlikely. Even if he is back and gives us 10-15 minutes, he’s unlilkely to be 100% and he’ll still be working things out with Towns. This team is going to peak sometime in mid March if everyone is healthy.
Some popular music would be better if there were no words and you just enjoyed the musicianship, beauty of it or even the catchiness of it. Some would be better if the words were spoken and there was no music or beat attached at all. Then again the latter would not be music. It would be some form of poetry (which imo it is anyway).
Interesting, indeed on the music.
Are we expecting OG back?
My hope is both OG and Mitch are back Thursday. But I’m more than ok waiting another week if it means those guys are truly gonna be healthy and available. Our bench might not have much offense (until we bring Bogey or Warren in), but adding a healthy Mitch still makes it strong with more rim protection and rebounding
fell in love with Captain Jack the first time i heard itâŚsounds like life growing up on Long IslandâŚ
It is so condescending, though.
âAnd you just sit at home and masturbateâ, âbut still your fingers gonna pick your nose after allâ⌠this is peak derision.
When Bruce or Bowie sing about people, you can tell they have some respect and admiration for their subjects. Billy Joel does not. When he sings about Brenda and Eddie buying paintings from Sears, for instance, he is making fun of them. Same with âAll your life is channel 13. Sesame Street. You canât handle pressure.â Jeez, Billy, tell us what you really think of your audience.
Even Piano Man is basically him arrogantly proclaiming âthe best thing in your sad life is me.â
(Forgive the rant but I was surrounded by this for my entire Long Island upbringing. I was like Mugatu â âI feel like Iâm taking crazy pills!â â every time someone played him on the jukebox, which was basically all the time.)
I would be shocked if Mitch played on Thursday. Just because the news has been so piecemeal, and none of it has suggested he is that close. Admittedly, everyone is off for a few days, but I would need to hear Thibs say that they’re hoping for this week before I’d even consider it a possibility.
It’s all about the defense. If the Knicks want to actually contend they have to fix that or they’re pretenders.
The one Billy Joel song I fuck with is Downeaster Alexa, which I imagine doesn’t make anyone’s top 50 list. That one at least has some empathy for its subject (probably because the subject lives in the Hamptons).
You think Christie Brinkley still listens to Uptown Girl?
I think that she never listened to it.
I think that she never listened to it.
That would be pretty impressive considering she was in the music video.
you know what hubie, you may just have a point there đ
sounded good to my teenage self, but yeah, maybe not the most memorable lines there, or memorable for not the right reasons…
Billy Joel did pull of one of the greatest two-fers in rock star history, dumping Elle McPherson for Christie Brinkley
If that doesn’t prove that looks don’t matter when you’re a pop idol, nothing does.
If OG is playing I think we will be competitive in both games. To feel like we have a good shot to beat them, Mitch would have to be playing and be close to 100%.
Counterpoint: Mitch has been BBQ chicken gumbo against the Celtics historically. He isn’t the spry young 3-point shot blocker he once was, and KP/Horford tend to exploit him mercilessly.
OG might move the needle though by being someone who can actually guard Tatum.
Big, long time Billy Joel fan from growing (not quite as much these days)⌠I think when Billy maligns the characters in his songs heâs very much deriding himself. He doesnât think of himself as any better (and maybe worse) than them. I think heâs just a cynic. The song The Entertainer is clearly about him and thereâs quite a bit of that in it. Same even with Piano Man. I donât think he looks down on his audience as much as he just has kind of a dark view of the world.
I’m from Jersey, my wife is from Long Island, so true to stereotype, I’m a Springsteen guy (though I like Billy Joel well enough), and she’s a Billy Joel girl (with less fondness for Bruce). For the most part, I’ve been more successful at indoctrinating our kids into my pop culture stuff, but neither of them has any real use for the Boss, while both get excited whenever SiriusXM re-adds the Billy Joel station.
âBut here I am standing waiting in the lobby sweating bullets in a stupid old suit.
And when she sees me she busts out laughing.
Youâre sad site honey but you look so cute and I donât wanna be alone anymore.â
Thatâs not a man who thinks highly of himself.
I wonder if we’ll start Deuce against the celtics, that’s something that I’d like to see the Knicks try out.
Let’s not look past the Bulls. They’ve beaten us twice this year already.
I wonder if weâll start Deuce against the celtics, thatâs something that Iâd like to see the Knicks try out.
History shows that Thibs hates starting Deuce and loves digging an early deficit with a Precious/Towns lineup that sucks at both scoring and defending 5-out teams.
Precious has averaged 11 and 7 with 1.5 steals in 29 minutes per game with 59.3 percent field goal shooting over his last 10 games. That’s…….not so awful, mostly in relief of OG’s absence.
Counterpoint: Mitch has been BBQ chicken gumbo against the Celtics historically. He isnât the spry young 3-point shot blocker he once was, and KP/Horford tend to exploit him mercilessly.
They are playing the Cavs once also.
I would say that as a rule I don’t like the majority of the songs that even my fave artists produce. For example, the majority of Bob Dylan’s songs don’t do much for me. Yet their great songs are so transcendent that I don’t really pay much mind to the ratio.
For most, the ratio was extremely high for a 2,3,4 album stretch…and then something happens that causes them to jump the shark. Billy Joel is definitely in that category for me.
Not many produced great songs by my standards (e.g. would make my personal spotify playlists) over a long, prolific career.
Not a lot of people in my circles that would ever put a Billy Joel song on with purpose. He doesnât really resonate. Itâs fucked that so many of the artists that would sing to and for me from that generation were taken in the AIDS holocaust.
Watched the first episode of White Lotus. Iâm not quite sure yet. (Thematically spoiler ishâŚ) Interesting to note that Mike White again presents homosexual erotica in the most negative light. I donât know if heâs self loathing but itâs a little off putting.
Precious has averaged 11 and 7 with 1.5 steals in 29 minutes per game with 59.3 percent field goal shooting over his last 10 games. ThatâsâŚâŚ.not so awful, mostly in relief of OGâs absence.
If he could shoot from the outside and play PF consistently, he’d be quite the bargain at anything in the same zip code as what we are paying him.
I am hoping that the Knicks are practicing today and we get some more info about Precious and Mitch.
Didn’t someone say Mitch would be back around March 1st? Or did I hallucinate that?
It is so condescending, though.
âAnd you just sit at home and masturbateâ, âbut still your fingers gonna pick your nose after allâ⌠this is peak derision.
You couldn’t be more wrong. But when you pick lines from different verses of a song and expect them to make sense. no wonder you draw a poor conclusion.
The song tells an accurate tale of an awkward 21 yr old coming of age. You take an awkward kid lacking in the social graces and put him in a fancy English suit, he’s still going to pick his nose.
It is reality… the journey of coming of age.
Clarence, Iâm curious what your schtick is? This isnât a hookup blog. Whatâs with the screename? My 10 year old son reads knickerblogger. I donât find it funny if your intention is comedy. We have all walks of life here united in our love of Knicks and basketball. I mostly lurk but occasionally post. I read the blog daily. And so does my son now. Any reading I get him to do is a win for me. Not sure why your profile name is necessary?
Hey llcoolbp, Iâm not quite sure what a hookup blog is, but Iâm pretty sure thereâs not a lot of that going on here. What about my handle bothers you?
Billy Joel did pull of one of the greatest two-fers in rock star history, dumping Elle McPherson for Christie Brinkley
If that doesnât prove that looks donât matter when youâre a pop idol, nothing does.
I think when Billy maligns the characters in his songs heâs very much deriding himself. He doesnât think of himself as any better (and maybe worse) than them. I think heâs just a cynic.
Interesting perspective, and I’m open to considering this view next time I hear his music (which will undoubtedly be the next time I go home). My money’s still on “he’s just an asshole,” though.
Clarence I donât know if you have children or not, but they tend to ask lots of questions. Luckily my son doesnât understand anything about your screename, and weâll leave it at that. I on the other hand am a big boy, and just find it to be in poor taste. So stop being coy. You know exactly what Iâm talking about. Carry on. If you or others disagree thatâs ok. Back to basketball discussions. Thank you.
His schtick is to tell us about random foods that he is eating in random cities, about farting and urinating in random airport restrooms, about other people who he is attracted to and/or who he somehow thinks are attracted to him, and about offering naked pictures of himself and more specific various parts of his body that likely no one in here wants. None of these topics are reasons why we are here. Every once in a while he actually posts about a basketball-related topic. I hate his screen name, too—100 percent inappropriate—and said as much as soon as he introduced it a little while back. Just wanted to let you know that you’re not alone. Rock on.
Llcoolbp, I donât have children. I respect how difficult it is to raise them and kudos to you for taking that on. I love other peopleâs children and I think it must be immensely difficult to guide them through what is an increasingly difficult to navigate data field. I wish you success and it sounds like your kid has a great dad whoâs looking out for him.
Should you want to have a meaningful discussion about why I should change my screen name Iâm open to it. Curious though, why now?
You didn’t change it to your current screen name until a relatively short time ago. That may be “why now.”
Thank you for getting my back Doogie. Iâm a New York liberal, but my greatest job is protecting my childrenâs innocence and getting them to a strong position in adulthood. Where they can explore things like sexuality from a position of safety and strength. Increasingly hard to do in this digital age. I think of knickerblogger as a safe haven. My son is a die hard already, and loves reading this blog. We joke and talk about inappropriate things sometimes, heâs not completely shielded. But I felt I needed to speak up. Again back to basketball. Iâm headed to msg with my boy on Thursday vs the bulls. First game of the year. Canât wait!
Clarence I have no beef with you. My son just asked my about your screen name. So I commented. To each is own.
Interesting to note that Mike White again presents homosexual erotica in the most negative light. I donât know if heâs self loathing but itâs a little off putting.
This thought popped into my head too⌠itâs sort of becoming a thing with him that âhomosexualityâ is one of those dark, weird things lurking under the surface like racism, incest or murderous rage. Kinda fucked!
That said, maybe itâs too early to go there after a single episode, so Iâll wait and see. I had other issues with it, but the show is still better than most of the schlock they churn out these days.
Watched the final episodes of Cobra Kai over the weekend, Johnny Lawrence is my hero.
My son is a die hard already
Lol I think this counts as not protecting your sonâŚ
kidding, LL! (But seriously, steer him toward the Thunder)
Yeah, keeping homosexuality wrapped up as if there is something wrong with it is a very weird way to go, and has been for quite a while.
Thatâs as good a reason as any. Could you suggest a guideline that is sensitive to what you might imagine a person like me would feel comfortable with⌠I donât believe in censorship (especially when it silences the minority), I donât believe in the stigmatization of sexuality(especially when it targets the minority). Thereâs probably a few other things to consider (the context – namely being harassed by a stalker who doesnât understand consent and cosplays a 60 year old man with possibly a partner and a child that cannot stop obsessing over the deviance he suspects to be lurking right around the corner). As you can tell Iâm am open to change⌠whatâs in a name?
LOL I’m not worried about any deviance from anyone—and that’s *not* to say that I think you are deviant; I don’t know you at all, so I have no visibility into what you like to do, and whatever that is is of course totally up to you. But either way, no one’s deviance affects me in the least. Live and let live. It’s just that I much prefer to read about basketball (most specifically the New York Knicks) on a forum dedicated to basketball.
Changing your screen name for the sake of a young mind might make me differently of you—but just a little bit—and I’m sure you would have wanted to point out that you changing it has zero to do with me, which is fine.
Personally, I think there is a vast difference between expectations for situational discretion and censorship. In that sense, I’m more aligned with llcoolbp on this one. If that in any way aligns with Doogie as well, that is purely incidental.
LOL again. Lack of sItuational discretion has been my problem with Clarence the entire time, and I’ve said so countless times using slightly different verbiage. Again, this is meant to be a basketball forum.
Thanks, Z-man.
C’mon, Clarence, I actually was quite amused by your name, but I’m an adult, and amused by most things. You are quite aware that you’re the only person here who has a name that includes what I presume is not your standing reach as well as your favorite sexual position. That’s kind of a ‘read the room’ thing. If my son were to ask why you have your name I could go into great detail with explanations of particulars as well as hypotheses about your motivations, but my default would be “Because he’s an asshat.”
I never would have said anything otherwise, and your name still makes ME smile, but ll has a concern, and he’s stated it very politely and with some deference.
Doogie, you know I couldnt give two shits what you think. I just hope youâre lubricating your gimp suit before you put it on to bang away at those keys. But you know how important that is already.
That’s exactly what I predicted you’d say, and I said so just a few minutes ago, and it is exactly why I wrote it. You’re actually quite predictable a good bit of the time. LOL I don’t know how important whatever you are talking about is, because I literally have no idea what a gimp suit is, or why anyone would lubricate any kind of suit at all, gimp or otherwise. That was almost unintentionally funny.
To expand on that thought, Clarence, all of us have strong beliefs. Few if any of us believe in stigmatization of sexuality. Context is important.
Most of us are good at retaining messaging. You have made all sorts of proud references to your sexuality and your beliefs. I don’t recall much criticism about it, other than from, well, you know.
When you put up a flashing banner, then it becomes about everyone else, not just your intended target. Frankly, it comes off as sort of juvenile to me.
In any case, not that big a deal, but I think you have long made whatever point you were trying to make.
I respect the communication from ll.
I just hope youâre lubricating your gimp suit before you put it on
i was reading this while on a zoom call and started laughing on the call and someone asked me what was so funny…
If you’re insinuating that I am the “well, you know,” you are completely wrong and you knew that when you posted it. (If you’re *not* saying that about me—which I doubt, because you love to attack me completely wrongly and unfairly—then I apologize for *my* insuation.) I’ve always defended Clarence’s right to be and do whatever he wants to be and do. Again, I just don’t want to read about it on a baskeball forum. It’s not the place for it. This is the same thing I’ve been complaining about the whole time.
I admittedly have a pretty juvenile sense of humor but Clarence always make me laugh. That said I do think it’s a reasonable ask to remove the dick measurement from your profile name on a public blog about a sports team that another poster is trying to bond with his child over reading
Okay guys and gals, and all the little ones⌠letâs get that chip.
Thanks, Clarence, even though you didn’t do it for me. đ
Lmao well played
my greatest job is protecting my childrenâs innocence
It’s funny you say that and go on to say:
Iâm headed to msg with my boy on Thursday vs the bulls.
because that is the very thing that shattered my innocence back in 1993.
because that is the very thing that shattered my innocence back in 1993.
For me it was the 1-2-3 punch of:
-’94: Starks, my favorite player, 2-18 in game 7
-’95: Reggie Miller 8 points in 18 seconds
-’95: Ewing finger roll to win the series rims out
I came into those experiences an innocent boy, full of optimism and wonder. When I emerged, there was only the clown.
Actually by 1993 I was already hardened.
I suddenly remember quite vividly the moment my Knicks innocence was shattered: Game 7 in Chicago, 1992. It was a late Sunday afternoon game, and I had never experienced heartbreak before.
I was confident we were going to win. That’s how you know I was innocent. I recall Gerald Wilkins hit a 3 in the first quarter and I was celebrating prematurely.
Then Jordan just ripped us apart, and I cried.
I remember hating Gatorade that whole summer.
Appreciate you making the change, Clarence. I laughed with the new name a week or two back (though you seemed to be confused about the symbol for centimeters), but if underage folks are reading, makes sense to be considerate of that. There’s no stigma, just protection from a conversation they are too young to be having. (Though I first read John Irving at 13, and that was definitely not OK)
That said, maybe itâs too early to go there after a single episode, so Iâll wait and see. I had other issues with it, but the show is still better than most of the schlock they churn out these days.
I didn’t like the show, mostly because it is incredibly predictable if you know any screenwriters: almost every one I know is so embittered by the studio system and so beaten down by the culture that when they get to do a “passion project,” it’s almost always an explosion of bile so acidic as to be toxic. I’m generalizing, obviously, but most of them seem to hate the world and/or themselves. “Hey, here comes another original take about how people are shitty and selfish and there’s is no beauty in the world. Awesome!”
No thanks. Though Murray Bartlett redeemed my investment of time, at least.
Speaking of bile, I agree with the poster who suggested Billy Joel is self-lacerating. I’ve always heard his songs as disgust with himself – which makes sense for an alcoholic.
FROM SHAMS:
Lonnie Walker IV has agreed to a two-year, $3 million deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent George S. Langberg of GSL Sports Group told ESPN. Walker has played for Zalgiris Kaunas in the Euroleague and had an NBA-out in his deal. He now enters his 7th NBA season.
So much for the Lonnie Walker dream, for those who held it.
Wish we could’ve snagged Lonnie, but we didn’t have that money.
If he gets a post in within the next four years or so, I will be dethroned as the youngest Knickerblogger Poster in history (I believe I offered the occasional Ronny Turiaf take at 14. I am now 30.).
Did 10 year old llcoolbp jr ask you how a man could dump Elle McPherson for Christie Brinkley and still have a dark view of the world? Cause thatâs what Iâve been grappling with today.
If youâre insinuating that I am the âwell, you know,â
Yeah, I was.
“you are completely wrong and you knew that when you posted it.”
I’m not and I don’t.
(…because you love to attack me completely wrongly and unfairly…)
I truly apologize for all cases where I have attacked you completely wrongly or unfairly.
Iâve always defended Clarenceâs right to be and do whatever he wants to be and do. Again, I just donât want to read about it on a baskeball forum. Itâs not the place for it. This is the same thing Iâve been complaining about the whole time.
You have engaged in behavior for months on end that had a broad swath of posters begging and pleading for you to stop. You not only didn’t stop, you defended your annoying and tiresome schtick to the hilt and called those who mocked you idiots, only making things worse. Finally, when more and more longtime posters were threatening to leave the blog out of frustration with you and/or calling for you to be banned or ignored, you caved and did what you easily could have done all along.
Much of the more graphic stuff Clarence posts is in direct response to you and your criticisms of his posts. And once again, you can’t seem to own your part in the “it takes two to tango” tango.
So yeah.

^ in case your son asks what TNFH stands for.
If the second year is not a player option that is a nice signing by the Sixers.
We don’t have much need for Walker with McBride being our best bench player, Payne, Shamet, and Wright all being guards, Kolek being our best prospect, and with two international guards in Rokas and Besson that we could bring over in the future, but Walker is a rotation quality NBA player and a bargain at the minimum.
I want us to sign Okeke or Bates-Diop (if we are allowed to). Either one would give us a defense-first wing with good size. Something we could really use. Shamet and Deuce are small and Precious is more of a big than a wing. Warren would be okay but I think we need defense more than offense and I don’t know how much he brings on that end.
Nance Jr or Boucher would also be awesome if they are waived but I don’t know if they will be.
I would also love us to waive Ryan and sign Patrick Baldwin Jr. to a two-way. I think he might have a little upside left.
The Nicest Fan Here
Having met him, and knowing what he does for work, I second that
Watched the final episodes of Cobra Kai over the weekend, Johnny Lawrence is my hero.
Believe it or not, I just discovered Cobra Kai. I knew the show existed, but I never considered watching it. My girfrind is wildy picky. Sometimes I look for things to watch after she goes to bed that I might enjoy. A couple of weeks ago I was feeling desperate due to insomnia and gave Cobra Kai a try on the assumption I’d get through 1-2 episodes and hopefully fall asleep. I proceeded to watch every season over the next few days and finished up this weekend with the finale. I’ll be nice and say Ralph Macchio’s acting was not award worthy ;), but it was a guity pleasure type show for me and I’m glad I watched the entire thing.
Lonnie probably has a much better chance to play (and possibly stick) with the Sixers than he would with us. So even if we could have matched that offer, seems like a better career move.
I dunno, Clarence — it’s a bit like the kind of insecure chick who gets up at the bar or the party and takes her shirt off and waves her rack around just to show everyone that she’s “open” and “not afraid to do it” and “why is everyone so hung up???”
Typically in that scenario, their racks aren’t that great. But the point isn’t really the rack quality to begin with. It’s not really the rack that’s being exhibited.
First time I cried about a sporting event was the Charles Smith game, 3 days before my 13th birthday. I was so distraught with the way the game ended my mom yelled at me to knock it off.
With the Yankees it was obviously Game 5 vs Seattle in 1995.
I just spent 4 nights in New Orleans and now I understand why Zion is and cannot be anything other than fat
edit: oh damn he’s pretty slim now, guess it’s a “me” problem
Cobra Kai is kind of like that Spartacus show that ran on Starz a while back: better than it has any right to be.
What I love about it is that it takes place in a world that is exactly like our own with one key difference: karate is the single most important thing in the world to the extent that teenagers’ karate feuds dominate their lives and those of the adults around them.
It’s kind of like how Yellowstone is on cattle ranching.
Negative to Billy Joel on virtually every level, including Hubert’s. Allentown is tolerable but pedantic, and if it wasn’t about the Rust Belt it wouldn’t even be tolerable. Mezz level at its absolute peak and really not even that. The fact that he’s become one of the house bands of Dolan’s Garden puts an even more nauseating sheen on the entire enterprise.
Just an opinion, though.
You could not like anything I post or the way I write it, but it does not give you an excuse to call me homophobic when I am anything but. There is nothing I’ve complained about regarding Clarence that has anything at all to do with his sexuality, and I’ve stated that clearly over and over and over again. If anything I’ve ever posted seemed like the contrary, it was either inadvertent (me posting in a rush and maybe not totally clearly) or incorrectly perceived on the other end.
Many posts raising important questions today:
Why would anyone post about Ronny Turiaf, even at 14?
If llcool’s son reads Knickerblogger regularly, isn’t this entire thread going to open up even more difficult questions?
And honestly, going from Elle to Christie would leave me dark and embittered. Only a little bit, but some.
I just spent 4 nights in New Orleans and now I understand why Zion is and cannot be anything other than fat
edit: oh damn heâs pretty slim now, guess itâs a âmeâ problem
It’s probably more of a “you don’t have an ozempic prescription” problem.
I mean, has it ever crossed your mind that you dislike me so intently that you are going to read my posts in as negative a light as you can possibly perceive? There is a lot of that going on if you think that I’m in any way homophobic.
I also watched the new Captain America movie over the weekend, I enjoyed it more than I thought I would.
It’s also untrue that Clarence calling me “stupid” out of the blue and repeatedly always has something to do with me saying something like that to him first. I haven’t called him or anyone else an idiot in a while. Quite often he attacks me simply because I don’t like the same food/movie/television/music as he does. (Which is weird. Not sure why he cares if I like what he likes. I don’t care if any of you like what I like.)
Yeah I donât know either LilâP. Who knows what draws us to our identities.
With the Yankees it was obviously Game 5 vs Seattle in 1995.
I was past crying at that point. That was my fighting phase.
Clarence glad to have the discussion. I do appreciate your effort to take my opinion into consideration. Iâm by no means a censor nazi. Just trying to encourage my son to take interest in the Knicks, and reading and writing more. I also got him a NYTimes and Atheltic subscription. So itâs all good.
Funny part is I became a diehard Knicks fan because they were good and always in the playoffs, Yankees I didn’t get to watch them in the playoffs until 1995 when I was already 15yo. I was a diehard Yankees fan because of my parents and I knew about their history and took pride in that, plus even though they didn’t make the playoffs in the mid to late 80s they still had good teams and I loved Mattingly, Winfield and Rickey.
Doogie, if you are referring to me, I did not call you homophobic, nor did I insinuate it, certainly not purposely. I also don’t dislike you because I don’t know you, and if you are as well-liked outside of this blog as you say you are, then if we met, I would judge you on that. But I definitely have disliked your posting here on KB far more often than not, both in tone and in substance. Lately you have made a bonafide effort to become better at it, and I appreciate that.
Beyond that, the stuff between you and Clarence is a 2-way street. Stop acting like an innocent victim.
Yeah man. As the only out of the closet neuro-atypical here I am well aware I can be loud.
it was either inadvertent (me posting in a rush and maybe not totally clearly)
Did you hear that sound? It was irony dying yet another gruesome death.
Not that ironic once you realize that I never said that I was perfect or that my posting here is totally free of any errors. In fact, I’ve said more than once that I welcome people pointing it out when/if I make errors, so that I can 1) be more careful and/or 2) learn from it.
Thanks, Z-man. Appreciate it.
Speaking of dads I need a good dad joke. Anyone got a favorite?
“I welcome people pointing it out when/if I make errors”
Okay, here goes nothing. You say you come here to read about basketball. Yet most of your posts are about nothing of the sort.
Now, let’s be clear — if we only posted about basketball here it’d be dull as a sand dune, for example this all-star break has been kinda fun because Billy Joel etc. So people absolutely can and should post about other stuff.
One of the big problems is that most of your posts are about YOU. They’re either about how you don’t like something someone else posted, or you’re defending yourself.
And here’s the thing. Nobody here cares if you don’t like creamed corn or whatever. Or that you’re actually a really nice guy.
Don’t get me wrong, you can definitely post about yourself — if you have a funny story about something that happened to you, go for it. It’s not recommended as a regular thing, but it can be decent filler if it’s funny or interesting. Preferably both.
But if you find yourself about to write something about how YOU don’t like something someone said or recommended (unless it’s part of the thread’s narrative, such as liking or disliking Billy Joel), or if you’re about to write a post defending yourself, walk away from the keyboard.
Take a deep breath. Then come back and write something pithy about Ronny Turiaf or whatever.
too funny raven…was just thinking I maybe post about a third of the shit that comes in my head to post…
it all just sounds so good initially…must share with other humans…
sadly the dog barely seems moved by my brilliant insight and humor…
dog just looks at me curiously, notices there is no food involved, and then looks away…
Bates-Diop (if we are allowed to).
We are not, at least not until the offseason.
I thought the first season(*) of Cobra Kai was fantastic. I mostly liked the second, but stopped after the third. To me, it felt like the show was modeled much more on the increasingly ridiculous Karate Kid sequels than on the first, genuinely excellent and at least quasi-realistic 1984 film(**). But it is beloved in many corners, so I’m happy people are enjoying.
(*) The funniest part of the whole phenomenon is that the first two seasons were made for what was briefly called YouTube Red, an attempt to make mid-budgeted scripted originals for YouTube’s paid subscribers. But nobody watched the first season, so YouTube Red was shuttered, the first season and the second (which had been produced for YouTube) were acquired by Netflix, and suddenly it was a huge hit. And barely anybody is aware it ever existed anywhere else.
(**) True story: in my skinny adolescent days, my nose, my overall coloring, and my hairstyle, got me mistaken for Ralph Macchio once when I was a guest at a cousin’s bar mitzvah.
geo, the rules absolutely do not extend to you.
Your posts always make me happy. Even when they’re a little sad.
Anyway, not rules. Suggestions. For people to stomp all over.
Alan I actually watched the first 2 seasons on YouTube Red! Thru my phone I had a free subscription to YouTube Music which included YouTube Red so I was well aware of Cobra Kai before it was on Netflix.
The funny thing about Cobra Kai is that the whole show sprung from an episode of How I Met Your Mother.
I think I heard of it being on YouTube at first and kinda laughed because it sounded like a terrible, derivative idea for a show. Then everyone I knew started raving about it. It’s on my list, not that having it on there means much.
Clarence – Very considerate of you. And yes, Hubert, had the same thought about TNFH.
If anyone needs some sporting highlights to wet their whistle here is Monaco -Benfica. Benfica won the first game by a goal.
Guys, lay off Doogie, let him post what he wants. Heâs on team Turn That Shit Off Teen Walsh Girls Uptown Girl Blows Ass I Donât Care What Olivia Rodrigo Says.
He alright.
Hubert, what do you call a bear with no teeth?
Just stumbled on to the Stax: Soulville USA documentary. Awesome.
Is it a Gummy Bear, Clarence?
Yup. Straight from my dad. Went up to white plains to pick up my monthly allotment of his homemade jerky. Also his world famous leg of lamb.
I think âScenes From An Italian Restaurantâ is one of Billy Joelâs best songs, but to gauge how far he trails Bruce Springsteen as a songwriter, consider how inferior that song is to a song with similar subject matter, âBorn To Run.â The first verse alone of âBorn To Runâ has so much more oomph to it:
In the day we sweat it out on the streets
Of a runaway American dream
At night we ride through the mansions of glory
In suicide machines
Sprung from cages on Highway 9
Chrome wheeled, fuel injected, and steppin’ out over the line
Oh, baby this town rips the bones from your back
It’s a death trap, it’s a suicide rap
We gotta get out while we’re young
‘Cause tramps like us, baby, we were born to run
Makes âItalian Restaurantâ seem like kind of a trifle, and there are two other verses that are just as good!
Yeah, JK, thatâs why itâs hard to hate on Uptown Girl like itâs I Just Called to Say I Love You. Itâs probably worse, but the fact that Stevie wrote and arranged so many great songs makes it more upsetting. With Uptown Girl, Iâd be just as happy to pretend it doesnât exist and move on, but my Okay Zers keep playing it in my presence while also insisting that it is good. I feel like I have crosses the 8th dimension hereâŚ
(The amazing thing about Springsteen is that his ceiling is some of the best American songs ever, but his floor is really high too. He doesnât have any disasters on his hands. Even his one pure pop attempt is great. And his worst stuff is merely forgettable. He has had an amazing career.)
dancing in the dark?
Iâm not a huge Springsteen guy (and Iâve never understood the fans who go to see him 5 straight nights in concert) but the Born to Run album is a complete masterpiece start to finish.
My favorite is Jungleland, which builds and builds and has one of the greatest sax solos ever by the Big Man. Epic tune.
whn i think of a billy joel peer, i think of elton john…better songs, but he didn’t write his own lyrics…
And Elton has Candle in the Wind, which blows, but is the 2nd highest grossing song ever. Very Joelesque!
âHungry Heartâ is one of my favorite songs ever, flawlessly played and arranged. Timeless. I may have mentioned this here before, but it was written for the Ramones, and you can hear how it would have been a great Ramones song. Great lyric, great melody, simple chord progression that never changes except for the key change for the sax solo.
Joel wrote similar âback to basicsâ rock songs himself, and some of them were fine, but âHungry Heartâ just kills.
Just wait until Gen Z finds out about Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons. Donnie, make sure you donât ever play âBig Girls Donât Cryâ or âDawnâ by mistake.
My 17 year old went through a Glen Campbell phase. Sheâd have her headphones on in the back and Iâd see her smiling to herself and moving her lips quietly, and Iâd say âare you listening to Rhinestone Cowboy again??â and sheâd nod guiltily. I liked to imagine that of the 400,000,000 people in America, she was the only black teenaged girl listening to that song at that moment. Iâm pretty sure she was.
But unlike Uptown Girl, Rhinestone Cowboy has a bit of charm to it, and I kind of liked it when she played it out loud.
Now all she listens to is Kendrick. I have to admit, I miss the Glen Campbell daysâŚ
Funny how tastes differ. I like a decent amount of Springsteen stuff, but think Hungry Heart is pretty schlocky and never had much use for his dragged-out story songs from Born to Run. I actually like his ballads best, starting with Meeting Across the River. My favorite intro song to a movie ever is Streets of Philadelphia, the entire opening scene blew me away.
“Iâd see her smiling to herself and moving her lips quietly, and Iâd say âare you listening to Rhinestone Cowboy again??â”
Whut, not Wichita Lineman? Or By the Time I Get to Phoenix?
Glen was (by my standards) a heck of a guitarist. None of those hits were reflective of that.
No. It was Rhinestone Cowboy and Country Boy that she used to play A LOT. (I assume those were his âcross-overâ songs. I donât know the rest of his catalogue at all, except for Southern Nights which sounds like an outtake from Honkey Chateau).
For a while my youngest daughter had a fixation with Kokomo by the Beach Boys. Love the band, hate the song. She still cues it up just to get a rise out of me.
Born in the USA was one of my formative albums, but itâs actually super weird when you go back and listen to it. Itâs kind of a synth-folk Lynchian collection of ballads and rockers. Utterly bizarre. Donât listen to him much now, but I like Nebraska and The River most these days.
I like The River a lot.
The Jimmy Webb/Glen Campbell singles (Z-Man mentioned two of them) are great songs and great records. âGalvestonâ is another brilliant record. By the time of âRhinestone Cowboyâ his records had started to get pretty cheesy, but the Jimmy Webb-written ones are ace.
He was a top session player before he was a recording artist, one of the main guitarists in the Wrecking Crew. I was asked to join his touring band in the aughts, not long before his dementia got quite bad and he had to retire. If
I didnât have other commitments I would have done it.
looks like you need to be a PBS donator to watch it now, but there was a great doc (Nebraska: A Celebration of Words and Music) featuring artists playing songs and Warren Zanes talking through his book: Deliver Me from Nowhere…PBS thing came out last august…
i wasn’t that much a fan at the time of Nebraska, seemed really dark to me…
i was young, forgivable error…
at one point i found the Outtakes from Nebraska and fell in love with Pink Cadillac…
for some reason reminds me of stevie ray vaughan’s: pride and joy…just a simple and perfectly constructed and played song…
oh yeah, just checked the dvr…got it, watch party at my house…sadly now smoke free, just edibles, progress i guess…probably will need to bring your own booze too, had to toss out some beer that had expired…it takes a while for beer to expire you know…
oops, missed the title above in case you’re now looking for it, should read Nebraska: A Celebration IN Words and Music…
thinking “of” makes more sense than “in” though…whatever…

Can’t wait to see the narrative flip after Knicks beat both Cleveland and Boston this week. Get your popcorn ready.
That would be the best, and I’d love to be able to expect that occurrence. Alas…….
This is awesome.
Even better now. đ
Gene Simmons iced that one decades ago…
https://www.usmagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/542051308_gene-simmons-shannon-tweed-zoom.jpg?w=1000&quality=70&strip=all
Interesting perspective, and I’m open to considering this view next time I hear his music (which will undoubtedly be the next time I go home).
I respect the communication from ll.
i was reading this while on a zoom call and started laughing on the call and someone asked me what was so funny…
It’s funny you say that and go on to say:
because that is the very thing that shattered my innocence back in 1993.
So much for the Lonnie Walker dream, for those who held it.
Wish we could’ve snagged Lonnie, but we didn’t have that money.
Onwards.
Yeah, I was.
I’m not and I don’t.
I truly apologize for all cases where I have attacked you completely wrongly or unfairly.
So yeah.
The Nicest Fan Here
^ in case your son asks what TNFH stands for.
Having met him, and knowing what he does for work, I second that
Believe it or not, I just discovered Cobra Kai.

If
I didnât have other commitments I would have done it.
looks like you need to be a PBS donator to watch it now, but there was a great doc (Nebraska: A Celebration of Words and Music) featuring artists playing songs and Warren Zanes talking through his book: Deliver Me from Nowhere…PBS thing came out last august…
i wasn’t that much a fan at the time of Nebraska, seemed really dark to me…
i was young, forgivable error…
at one point i found the Outtakes from Nebraska and fell in love with Pink Cadillac…
for some reason reminds me of stevie ray vaughan’s: pride and joy…just a simple and perfectly constructed and played song…
there’s a version of Born in the USA on Nebraska…
oh yeah, just checked the dvr…got it, watch party at my house…sadly now smoke free, just edibles, progress i guess…probably will need to bring your own booze too, had to toss out some beer that had expired…it takes a while for beer to expire you know…
oops, missed the title above in case you’re now looking for it, should read Nebraska: A Celebration IN Words and Music…
thinking “of” makes more sense than “in” though…whatever…
