I know it’s only December and Game 25 in a long season, but I think this is an important measuring stick game. Not only is it Trae Young and ATL in MSG in a nationally televised showcase game, the only game at that time on a slow sports night, It’s an opportunity to show out vs. an EC playoff-level team who handled us earlier this year. I don’t think the game means very much in the grand scheme of things…we’ll have forgotten about it by the All-Star break…but a loss to that irritant at MSG would be hard to swallow right now.
“I have much respect for advanced stats, but would you believe if i told you that i wouldn’t trade any of OG, Hart and Mikal straight up for Dort?”
hey cyber, Dort musta heard you dissing him yesterday so he locked down Luka just to show off.
That OKC team looks unbeatable. They can just throw waves of good players at you, and SGA is just unstoppable. They are young, athletic, skilled, cohesive and well-coached. I don’t see anyone keeping them out of the Finals. That’s the NBA finals, who cares about the freakin’ Cup?
I like Dort, i just wouldn’t trade any of Hart, OG and Mikal for him. I think we shouldn’t make changes on the starting 5 at least until the summer, and i would only trade Deuce if it was for a player almost certain to be an upgrade. The rest of the roster we can use to make adjustments.
I’m starting to get the feeling that our team is treating regular season like they treat games, meaning they start slow and then ramp up the level of play as the game goes on. I also think some players might switch to an extra gear in the playoffs, so we should let the season play out and then we re-assess in the summer.
“I also think some players might switch to an extra gear in the playoffs,”
and the NBA Cup! Seriously, this is as important a game as we have had all year–mostly, and thankfully, because we have never yet had to stop a losing streak. We should win it, I expect the players believe that they should win it, it’s an “elimination” game for the $515K per, and the Garden will go nuts if we neutralise Trae.
Tonight’s a good game to test the flip the switch/extra gear theory.
Hart and KAT were questionable in yesterday’s injury report, let’s hope they can play without forcing the issue too much.
Fuck Trae Young!
KAT’s trending up on defense, and I am here for it. It seems like his defensive IQ is higher than I thought. That defensive sequence in the 4th against RJ where OG blocked it from the weakside? KAT played that perfectly. Now if Thibs can get him to stop playing opposing bigs like they are all ball handlers and shooters, the defense should get back to normal levels- or at least close to it. As far as team rebounding goes, Thibs is probably gonna have to shave some minutes off of OG and Bridges to get more physical rebounding in the game. Not much..I’m thinking 2-3 minutes off of each guy to get Achiuwa or Mitch(when he’s back) in there to see if we can grab a few more boards and get back to limiting the opposition’s 2nd and oftentimes 3rd chances
Knicks were up 5 with 3 mins left in the game at Atlanta, they weren’t exactly handled. Atlanta is not very good and the Knicks should obviously win. Also this perception that Trae Young owns the Knicks is nonsense, Hawks are 10-15 vs Knicks with Young and he’s shooting below 40% for his career against them.
I don’t remember where I saw it, but KAT’s rim protection numbers have improved quite a bit since the earlier part of the season. It could be strength of opposition, of course, but I’ll take the good news.
Looking at league numbers, I don’t think the Knicks are too far off from being in the 12-14 range in DRtg. The Kings – the Kings! – are 13th right now, a little over 1 point/100 better than the Knicks. I think that range is a good short term goal, especially with Precious back.
Despite their weak schedule, the Knicks (5.16) have made some ground on SRS compared to the Cavs (7.73) and the Celtics (8.53). Slowly, the Cavs are coming down to earth, it seems, and the Knicks have been in that range pretty consistently.
I love Josh Hart. I loved the trade and have defended him even when he wasn’t shooting well. But I think when Mitch comes back, it’s more likely that Hart will lose a few minutes than either OG or Bridges.
One of Hart’s best attributes is being a big plus rebounder for his position. Hart’s value to our starting lineup, which is generally weak on rebounding, is especially significant.
If you add someone like Mitch to the lineup, you are adding rebounding (especially OREBs). So Hart’s value declines a bit and so does the offense and spacing. I think I’d rather keep OG and Mikal on the court with Mitch than Hart.
Thibs will find a way to tweak the minutes to maximize things. Hart is playing too well to have any kind of significant reduction.
“Thibs will find a way to tweak the minutes to maximize things.”
Or more accurately:
“Thibs will find a way to tweak things to maximize the minutes”
The Athletic just posted an article where they surveyed 40 NBA executives to name their top 10 front offices and the Knicks finished 6th. When was the last time the Knicks had as well respected front office, during the Checketts-Grunfeld era?
Ainge at 14 and Masai at 18. Gone are the days when the thought of Leon picking up the phone to call them evoked hysteria or at the very least mild discomfort (tbh, I was in the discomfort/severe discomfort camp–and I liked Leon!).
Shams says Barnes is expected to miss a few weeks.
Atlanta has been playing well recently, they’re not bad.
Will Leon reach the status of Theo Epstein? I hope so.
Here’s that full article: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/5982216/2024/12/11/nba-front-office-rankings-2024/
And here’s a notable part from the Knicks blurb (there’s more there):
“Will Leon reach the status of Theo Epstein? I hope so.”
Actually I hope not. Theo’s status was attained when he traded away the best and most popular Boston player in a decade, absorbed the backlash and hindsight proved him correct as Nomar quickly declined and Boston got better and won the WS the next year. It would be analogous to Leon jettisoning Jalen because he is seeing the decline. Rather just have Jalen win the chip as the captain with Leon basking as one of the top execs in the background.
If I’m parsing their site correctly, Dort has had a better season than those 3 by EPM but all 3 are still better than Dort. That said, he’s not far behind Hart and as close as he can be to Bridges without being tied.
Also, Lu Dort is shooting .394 on 3s over his last 526 attempts (this season and last). He’s a really good player if he can keep anything near that up.
They easily outscored the Knicks 16-6 in the last 3 minutes. I’d call that being handled, since who gives a shit what happened before that. They won going away.
They’ve beaten the Celts in Boston, the Cavs twice in a row, and just ended the Bucks 7-game winning streak in Milwaukee. They have won 6 of their last 7 and now have a winning record. I agree that we should win, but this is hardly a team to be taken lightly.
Maybe so, but it does make for great theater. Fact is, the Hawks have a pretty good team and don’t need Trae Young to score efficiently over the course of a game to win. Trae draws a lot of attention and is leading the league in assists, so it could come down 3-pt variance. They also rebound pretty well, so keeping them off the boards is key.
Marechal, it was probably this tweet that was then covered by Macri:
“Karl Anthony Town’s Defensive Field Goal Percentage within 6 feet of the rim:
10/22-11/10: 79.5%
11/11-12/10: 62.5%”
How could anyone discount the Hawks when they beat the Cavs twice in a week? They aren’t a fluke.
As for the GM article, I don’t know why the Mavs are so low and the Spurs so high. We’re probably about right.
The matchup to watch is Brunson vs Daniels. If we don’t win that, we’re probably fucked. We might need Mikal to earn his paycheck again tonight.
Pace that assistant GM, I’m fine being in the KAT business even at that contractual price point.
That said, Leon got taken to the cleaners badly by both Sean Marks (Mikal) and Sam Presti (draft day 2022).(*)
Nor am I certain where the hubris re dealing with Masai would come from, since Masai got Leon to overpay pretty badly for UFA-in-three-months OG. Given the track record, I don’t see any reason not to worry when Leon gets on the phone with the real pros in the GM fraternity.
Leon has moved the payoff of his asset chest entirely forward, which can cause illusions about the current status and product. Said illusions fed into this ranking.
(*) Both first guesses, not second — see the archives on and shortly after draft day 2022.
I don’t know, BE. Painful, yes, but:
+ Cubs?
Isn’t that the job of the GM… to sell players a short time before they decline and win the championship? If you want sentimentality, there is always the Hallmark Channel.
KAT’s effort level has been outstanding. I haven’t seen the problem of taking plays off on D like Julius used to. I also see a maturity to his game and his approach that is significantly better than what I remember from watching him play in the past.
It gives me hope that the combination of a thicker skin than he used to have, and a more mature approach to being coached hard as well as agility training, fitness, and nutrition, he can become a better defender over time. There seems to be so much low-hanging fruit for him to pick up, simple things like hand and foot positioning, sliding his feet to cut off angles, etc. that I think he can go from terrible to something around average.
But after watching the Thunder turn it up last night with iHart patroling the lane, I feel like we really need a Mitch-level impact defender out there against a team like that. We really need to pray for Mitch’s full recovery and good health for the rest of the season. It would make such a huge difference.
+ Cubs?
But that would entail Leon being still at the top of his game…but not employed by the Knicks!
“Isn’t that the job of the GM… to sell players a short time before they decline and win the championship? If you want sentimentality, there is always the Hallmark Channel.”
My point is I would rather the current Jalen led team win than a basketball equivalent of Manny Ramirez led team win
Hawks are 19th in both offense and defensive rating. They have a negative point differential. They’re not that good.
Hahaha. Yes, I get that, but would you accept two world championships for the Knicks in exchange for letting Leon prove his mettle elsewhere? I would 😉
KBA you’ve got me.
Ah. Didn’t see this part. Yes, I would rather that, too. No question. I love Jalen and it’s a way better story.
I guess I’m positing that Jalen/Nomar would not win, and Manny would. I think that’s the Theo comparison IMO, but I know that can never be proved.
And people in hell want ice water. If Leon is moving his godson, I assume it is because he thinks he is improving the team markedly. And what is wrong with Manny Ramirez?
That’s it – thank you, raven.
winning is almost always good, and it would be nice to beat the Hawks, who are definitely a decent team…
having said that – is there some cup consolation game to be played if we lose tonight, or do we actually get like 8 days of rest before we play our next game?
hearing about max fried this morning is making me wanna get up and go fry something for breakfast…
They had a rough start to the season. As Dred said, lately the story is a bit different.
Z-Man, not sure if you were fully serious, but I liked your idea about making 3’s only count for 4 with less than 14 seconds on the clock. I also read somewhere an idea of only counting 3’s the last half of each quarter or a certain period of time. I am not sure any of these ideas are perfect, but, I like the concept.
one other positive to think about this morning – most of us here don’t have to worry about what happens with the rest of the football season…
go new york football giants…go sell the team, give some other owner, and the fans, a chance…
Looking forward to him pitching to Ben Rice at catching so that we can have a Fried Rice battery.
Kyle Tucker trade rumors have me really excited if true.
Never mind looks like Cubs are the more likely trade partner for Tucker.
Kyle Tucker will get an enormous contract. Not Soto level but eye popping. He’d be the right kind of target for the Yankees but not sure how they get him. Terrific player.
Excited for the game tonight, I like a bit of Cup spice and the bit of rivalry we have with the Hawks is enjoyable.
I don’t get to watch enough of Lu Dort but when I do I love him. The defense always looks hellacious and the aggregate numbers seem to bear that out. I would say that what Hart has done offensively so far this year seems to even the scales but no shame in comparing the two on either end.
I guess it depends on whether you believe their overall record or their recent performances are a better indicator of what they actually are and what we should theoretically expect tonight.
When I look at that roster, I feel like we are a solid favorite tonight.
They could always get hot from 3 and we could be throwing up bricks, but imo we are clearly better.
well now, that sounds positively delicious marechal 😊
I’m not even sure what that means.
The 79.5% is so atrocious there has to be random noise or an explanation in that number. No one is that bad, not even 300 pound Eddy Curry.
Is 62.5% supposed to be good?
I didn’t think of that when I read those two stats, but they are very fair questions…….and I’m a huge KAT fan, at this point! But it’s not great if all it’s basically saying is that he used to pretty much always let the opposition score close in, but now he “only” does so most of the time.
I mean of course Hawks could win tonight, they’re not the Hornets or Wizards. They’re OK, they’ll be a play-in team which is what they’ve been past 3 seasons. Just think the Knicks have gotten to the point where I’m not worried or quite frankly care about those type of teams, Knicks main competition are the Top 5 to 10 teams in the NBA not the middling bottom of the playoff standings teams.
Thanks, Nick. I’ve always felt that it’s not constructive to point out a problem without suggesting a thougtful (if misguided) solution.
For me, the problem is more 7SoL style basketball than 3’s in and of themselves. I actually like it when teams go inside out and the result is a good look from 3. I also like when the 3pt line is covered well so teams have to settle for 2’s but there’s some creativity involved. What I don’t like is when teams are encouraged to take 3’s in transition before working for a higher percentage shot, or just launching 3’s in the halfcourt before working for a higher percentage shot.
My feeling is that ideally, teams would be taking on average about 30% of their shots from 3. Right now, the Nuggets have a league-low 34% 3PAr, and league average is 42.3%. I’m not sure how to best remedy that, but to me it takes enough away from the game that it needs to be remedied.
My suggestion would be for the NBA to look at the teams in recent history who have played the most aesthetically pleasing brand of basketball, and then to adjust rules to encourage this kind of basketball. My two faves are the 2014-15 Dubs (31% 3PAr) and the 2013-14 Spurs (26% 3PAr).This has been done many times over the course of NBA history, most recently with the elimination of the transition take foul, and before that, elimination of the away-from-the-ball foul. Eliminating the transition or early-clock 3 can be accomplished by the 14 second rule, but there might be other ways that would be easier to enforce. Perhaps have sort of an “offsides” provision, where a team could not get credit for 3 points until all defensive players were in the frontcourt except in the last 2 minutes of a quarter. I don’t think that would make defenders stay back to prevent the 3 because they’d be risking a 5-on-4 situation where converting a 2 was much more probable. You could also add delay-of-game provisions for laggards. Or you could simply move the line out to bring percentages down and either widen the court of eliminate the corner 3.
The larger point is that the league should be encouraging more passing and more balanced shot distribution.
I also think something has to be done to speed up the last 2 minutes of a game. I am not an Elam ending guy, but making it a FT contest is too close to deciding the game penalty shots in hockey and soccer, and it takes forever.
I think making all non-shooting fouls in the final minute technical fouls (i shot by any player and the ball), or giving teams the option of a technical FT or two shots from any player would help. If teams choose to foul anyway because of the chance of a stolen inbounds pass, make it so that when teams are over the limit, the fouled team gets one shot and a free inbound in the backcourt (defenders can’t go into the backcourt until the pass leaves the passer’s hand.
All of these kinds of things can be experimented with down in the G-League…run several tournaments with different rules to test them out, then bring the good ones up to the NBA.
Another rule change I’d like to see is eliminating the “rolling inbound pass”. Players should be required to pick up the ball immediately, or alternatively, the clock should start when the pass in the backcourt either hits the player’s hands or the floor.
“lately the story is a bit different.”
This seems to be the narrative of this season, everywhere and much more so than I remember from years past. From Mikal being cooked to being perfectly cromulent, KAT’s rim protection improvement, the Bucks being dead in the water, the Lakers being good, and on and on. It’s a bit whiplash-y, and it feels like whatever opinion you held before, there’s now evidence to show you’re wrong (or at least it’s all changed).
For reference on the season:
Gobert is at 54.2%
Horford at 65.2% (maybe he’s actually falling off)
Kessler at 51.3%
Vucevic at 66%
The expected fg% for KAT is +1.3% over the 2nd listed timespan, but this is likely for all positions.
Sims is still leading the league among Cs at 37.5%. He has a -23.9% differential.
Before Sims leading completely turns you off to the stat, Chet is 2nd at 43.6%. Wemby 5th at 46.8%. JJJ tied for 6th (with Hukporti!!!) at 50%. Kessler and Mobley are also pretty high.
I’m only looking at Cs as listed by NBA.com. I excluded players with fewer than 10 games.
I am with you, I don’t like the rolling inbound play. It has always irritated me for some reason. I enjoy the 3 point shot, but not as much as it is happening. And, it seems like it will only increase in the near future. Maybe it will approach high 40 and even 50% of shots. I like seeing a mix of plays, even the frowned upon mid-range jumper.
As someone in their mid-40s, I sometimes wonder how some of the 80-90 great players would have done with this amount of spacing. MJ? Bird? And even one of our own…Ewing.
That said, I do like how different eras had different styles. It is one of the reasons it is so challenging to compare players from different eras.
Precious is at 41.7% dfg% within 6ft. In other words, every C on the team other than KAT is basically top-6 in the league at this stat.
Obviously there’s a big drop in talent that Huk goes against, but still… the system works for everyone else.
Yes, please. I understand why they do it, but i think it looks ridiculous when they let the ball keep rolling instead of picking it up.
Yes, if we lose we play a game against the Magic that lost to the Bucks. If we win, we play the Bucks in the NBA Cup semis.
“Yes, if we lose we play a game against the Magic that lost to the Bucks. If we win, we play the Bucks in the NBA Cup semis.”
Lordy, that’s ridiculous. How long does this thing go on for? It’s just adding more and more potential extra games, seemingly.
It’s just adding more and more potential extra games, seemingly
A game. In a final. Lordy.
thanks cyber, i hope you’re having a great day…
I remember last year looking at the schedule and getting confused about the seemingly large gap (this year 8 days) in off days…
gotcha, after tonight they have to play at least one more before the 19th…
well then, go knicks…
interested to see how they can contain trae, keep him under like 10 assists, and how can they score against all their length…
The only extra game is the Cup final and it doesn’t count for the standings, the others are regular season games “left blank” (read: with opponents TBD) in the original schedule.
Knicks lose they play Sunday at Orlando. It would actually give them 3 days off, game at Orlando then another 3 days off before playing at Minnesota.
A game dominated by Jacob Toppin (36 pts , 14-20 FG, 3-8 3FG , 14 Reb). 🙂
Both Kolek (7-20 but 9 Reb and 8 Ast) and Dadiet (5-15, 0-6 3FG) had a bad shooting morning…
OK on only one extra game because of the Cup; thanks to all. Lordy. 🙂
Yes, I remember when this first started in games. they’ve been doing it for awhile, at least since the mid 2000’s, but it used to be something that was only done at the very end of games if a team was down and was trying to extend the game any way they could.
Now every team does it at the end of every quarter in order to get a 2 for 1 and they do it starting way earlier in the 4th if they’re down.
I’ve always been surprised more teams don’t try to steal the ball. It seems like something you could pick off every once in awhile if you had a guy who was quick enough to run up there. At the very least you force the player to pick up the ball and start dribbling and might keep them in the back court longer to eat up shot clock. But I would be more than fine with them getting rid of this.
Also, what if they just got rid of zone defense again and allowed hand checking again?
Fuck, no Huk?
Huk no
All good here, Geo, let’s hope the Knicks don’t ruin it. 😀
And i hope you’re having a great day too. 😉
This is why I’m indifferent to signing Warren. People are upset we didn’t sign a guy barely outperforming Jacob Toppin.
Shuks, that suks. What a schmuk!
I’m not upset about Warren, but he is a veteran who has been successful on the NBA level for many years. I believe if he’s healthy, he can contribute. Toppin may develop into a decent player, but we’re in win now mode, and he has not shown he is ready at all.
Hey Geo,
I just had my first day of cardiac rehab. It was a strange feeling exercising without chest pain or shortness of breath. I believe it will be mostly a mental battle for me going forward.
Dang, I’d like to see more of Hukporti. Among the kids he feels like the closest to being useful.
I think one day this season we will se a Hukporti Blokparti.
nice g-man, moving forward with a plan…
all I really got to do these days is focus on my health, and I could still do a whole lot better…
during the really tough and scary parts I usually default to trying to strengthen my faith…health stuff can really challenge your spirit…
keep on truckin sir…
shams just said mitch not coming back min late jan or into feb
Just what we didn’t need.
Fuck that sucks more than Huk…
Zero luk
Uk
Mitch news is unfortunate but not surprising. To be honest I expect he’ll get hurt again before he can even play himself back into shape. It’s been years since he’s been healthy for 2 months in a row and I think we need to accept that he is most likely done as a full-time NBA player.
he’s approaching greg oden/sam bowie type availability…
And from that point on, he’ll be known as Blockporti. 🙂
Yeah, i think i’m going to revert to faith in Mitch’s case. I’m going to light a candle to help him to get healthy in January.
When Joel Fucking Embiid twisted Mitch’s ankle on purpose it was the final blow (and he wasn’t even ejected).
I’ve a bag full of bad things to wish to the Big Whiner…
I’d call him a frog eatin’ faccia di cazz’ but that’s too good for a traitor to the French people like him.

C’mon KB! this might be the biggest game of the season so far

Will be splitting focus between a girls middle school basketball game being photographed by my son and the Knicks.
Which will be better? Based on the last few Q1 for the Knicks, who knows? 😉
I’ve lost the King of Emojis title to Max !!! 😉 😀
LOL!
Cyber, can you imagine a Champions League match starting 15 minutes late? The fans would riot! 😂😂😂
LOL
I am moving on from 3 craft beers into Ocho blanco tequila. Here for the duration!
“Will be splitting focus between a girls middle school basketball game being photographed by my son and the Knicks.”
You’re going to be photographed by your son *and* the Knicks?!? Very cool! (But aren’t they busy at the moment? 🙂 )
Totally! 😀
Will throw up a thread
I suspect Cronin thought it was an 8 pm start
No matter how the game goes, you’ll be happy! 😀
Knicks off to a faster start than the blog
Hard on my phone but it’s up
