If we max out the 28 days with sub-14 players on the roster by only signing 12, I believe we can sign both Warren and Shamet (or any other 2 vet combo).
This would involve signing a player on a non-guaranteed minimum deal after the first 14 days, then waiving him to get a new 14 day period.
We can do it in slightly under 28 days in case we need extra time later.
It would also give us time to check-in on Shamet & McCullar’s progress. If McCullar can come back and show something in the g-league or practice, he might win a spot over Hukporti. No idea on the McCullar recovery timeline though.

I can’t see anyone winning a spot over Hukporti, though. Especially with Precious out and Sims being, you know, Sims.
Funny how the randomness that baseball playoffs are known for led to the most predictable outcome…the two teams with the best records in their respective leagues meeting in the World Series.

We can use Hukporti for up to 50 games on a 2-way contract, and we’re already rostering 4 C options: KAT, Sims, Precious, & Mitch. We just don’t need more single position Cs. Sims isn’t good, but it’s not clear that Hukporti is so much better that he’s worth rostering, or that he’s better at all.
We need wings/forwards. C just isn’t a priority unless Achiuwa is out long-term.
I watched the last 7 minutes of Liberty game last night and have to agree with the Minnesota coach’s lament that they were robbed. That block should have ended the game. Nice to know the W is following in the footsteps of its older brother and fixing results to ensure the best outcome for the league.
I also read some of the complaints about the quality here. I was actually pleasantly surprised. I thought the quality relative to men’s basketball was at least as good as women’s tennis compared to men’s. And at that level the game should continue to grow fast.
A few things of note:
– the basketball looks comically large in a WNBA game!
– and it moves really slowly. There was a bounce pass on a fast break late in the game that seemed to be carried on the back of a turtle.
– the perimeter game is aesthetically pleasing. Once the ball moves within 10 feet of the rim the game gets rather ugly. I wonder if they will implement rule changes to help the game move further away from the basket.

Come to think of it, Noble at the tender of age of however-young-he-is is now of the very few people among us to have experienced a professional basketball championship in his lifetime.
EB, I get that, but the same would be true for McCullar and he hasn’t had training camp or preseason. And it’s almost a certainty that whatever FA we roster to replace Shamet will be a wing. With Mitch out until January, Precious banged up and being as much of a 4 as a 5, and Sims not being very good, I think Huk has shown enough to be a good dice roll. Not to mention that Mitch could be traded and Precious’ salary might be filler in said trade.
I think the Knicks are likely trying to add a versatil big man unless they are confident Huk can contribute now. With Mitch out and KAT typically missing plenty of games, they need an above average 3rd C . It’s very likely that player is not only going to get minutes now, he’s probably going to start some games until Mitch is back. I’m not so sure that even with Precious they weren’t looking for another big man. They don’t really have a backup PF either other than Precious.
I seriously doubt that they would add a non-rookie big to the roster unless it is via trade involving one of the current bigs. The guys available like Bismack or JaVale just don’t merit consideration.
As to backup PF, they can rotate Hart there like they did for the first part of last season, and maybe give the 2-big lineup with KAT at the 4 and Sims at the 5 some minutes. Maybe give Dadiet a look as well.
Now if in 14 days the bottom starts to fall out and teams are ramming shots down our throat, then maybe that changes. But KAT is likely playing 30+ min per night at C, so it should be fine for now unless someone else gets hurt.

One thing that struck me though is that almost all of them said they more or less checked out during the real depths, meaning almost any Knickerblogger poster would’ve been a better interview subject. Do these guys even know who Kadeem Allen is?
I’m not a fan of adding a third Wild Card team, but the new format does have the welcome benefit of conferring a serious advantage on division winners.
That’s the point I am making.
The under/over on Towns may be 60 or 65 games. If we get 70 or more, that’s great. But we have over 2 months without Mitch and Precious is going to “re-evaluated” in what is most likely 4 weeks. So he could be out longer too and he was the current backup C and PF.
That means for quite awhile any game where Towns is out is problematical.
Are we playing with Sims and Huk at C and backup C?
Playing Hart as PF is really a desperation move.
Getting Towns solved the starting C problem. It did not really solve the backup C problem because Mitch is so unreliable and Towns has been injury prone in recent years also. That’s why I keep saying we sort of need another big man that we can count on. Sims does not look like that guy. Unless Huk is that guy (we don’t know what their thinking is) we need another decent versatile big.
I remember Kadeem Allen well! A scrub who had some good moments with the C’s but ultimately sucked. Sort of a Frank without the hype.
Between Sims and Huk, I am not all that worried about 15 backup C minutes. I would give them every opportunity before squandering a roster spot. I would even waive a 2-way guy like Toppin and sign someone like Skap before signing a vet backup C from the scrap heap. But sure, they might go that way.
I wonder if Giannis is feeling some buyer’s remorse about staying in Milwaukee because of the Lillard move backfiring…mostly because they have no way to catch up with the Celts.
We have 2 weeks before we need to make a decision. If everyone goes down before then, we can always make an emergency signing. It’s another reason it makes sense to holdout on making a signing. If OG goes down, we’re down to Hart, Dadiet, and Toppin at PF?! We shouldn’t rush to make a decision until we’re forced to do so.
When healthy, I think McCullar will be more NBA-ready than Huk.
I’m also not sure Precious will be out that long. If he’s back quickly, it renders Huk unnecessary.
That is the third time that has happened in the 25 World Series that have happened in this century. The other 88% of the time, that didn’t happen.

With Towns being injury prone also that’s your starter and backup playing 48 minutes for any games Towns misses for quite awhile.

I doubt it. Versatile defensive wing is a much harder position to learn than straight defensive-lob threat 5. Tons of young, inexperienced C’s eat minutes around the league every year. Huk showed in preseason that he can absolutely handle the physicality and pace of the NBA. He just needs to work on situational awareness, like even good young players do.
McCullar is at least 2 months away from being on an NBA floor. When he recovers from his injury, he will need time in the G-League and practice. I would suspect that even Toppin will be way ahead of him until much further down the line. And that’s IF McCullar can stay healthy.
If Towns goes down for any length of time, we have much bigger problems. But until that happens, I would act as if he’s going to be available every game for the next couple of months, or until Precious’ injury turns out to be more serious than currently reported. If that changes, then make adjustments.
I’ve been casually watching the WNBA for a few years and I think the most surpising thing is how much more physical the game is than the NBA. Every WNBA big would foul out in like 7 minutes if they used NBA guidlines.
Does Caitlin Clark get fouled harder and more egregiously than most ball dominant WNBA players? Every now and then I’ll see some video where she gets fouled hard and it’s usually accompanied by some “tHiS iS a TrAvEsTy” race baiting bullshit. Most of the time the fouls look like fairly normal fouls to me, aside from the couple of occasions where some opponents did hit her with gratuitous cheap shots.

I really liked Skap’s upside after seeing him in Summer League, and for sure wouldn’t mind signing him off of the Skap Heap. 🙂
lol Doogie, I don’t like Skap at all, but he could probably eat a few minutes on a typical NBA team without being mercilessly targeted and tanking the game. But I would much prefer to see Huk out there. And I think we will.

Precious’ injury is an unpleasant occurrence that cut into a roster weakness, Shamet’s injury is an annoyance, our roster isn’t perfect, there are fringe moves I’d like to see and our Coach’s career tendencies could be a little worrying in regard of managing fragile players, but I feel somewhat “numb” about all of this right now*.
I don’t see perfect “bulletproof” teams in the League, the new cap rules are causing issues, many contenders have short benches and all are vulnerable to a couple of well placed injuries at the right time (“playoffs?!!?”).
After last year’s rash of injuries derailed our postseason, the only thing that is important to me is to get to the playoffs healthy, I don’t mind about seeding, good teams win everywhere.
And from what I see, with a lot of players allowed to take it easy, contending teams are feeling the same way, running the risk of trading regular season losses with potential health when it counts.
Playoffs rotations are 8 players deep, the others are towel-wavers, I’m more interested about our starting lineup learning to play together (on offense and defense) and then just get there in one piece.
* It doesn’t mean I don’t have an opinion about, let’s say, TJ Warren over Toppin or whatever.
Totally agree about the physicality. I only watched the fourth quarter of game 1 and game 5 but the Lynx looked like vintage 90’s knicks out there….

They’re not wrong. We’re entering the season without a viable NBA Power Forward on the roster and the guy for whom we traded 5x 1RP seems to have done the Landry Fields Sophomore Year Offseason Workout Regimen.
Without Precious to eat minutes at the 4 I’m expecting OG’s first injury by election day.
In the current format, the top 2 division winners in each league are 29-32 against non-division winners, with 7 series wins vs 7 series losses. And that’s always with home field advantage against teams that finished below them in the standings.
Getting the two best teams in the World Series is likely just as random as any other result.
Frankly it was magnanimous of them to have us in the ECF.

The idea, it seems, is to encourage players to take end of quarter heaves, rather than worrying about how it might affect their FG%.
I love this idea but have a question. If it goes in, does it still count as a team shot or does it then go to the player.
I think I remember reading somewhere that there were certain players (cough cough…Kevin Durant…cough cough) who were really good at heaving shots RIGHT after the buzzer so it looked like they attempted the shot but it didn’t count and it wouldn’t hurt their numbers.
The dark side of analytics and stats is players are now obsessed about this and for good reason. If you’re the guy who takes one of these a game, over the course of a season it could actually make a difference.

I like the rule, and yes, it should get credited to the player. Similar to how a player fouled while shooting and missing doesn’t get credit for the miss, but if it goes in, he gets credit for the make.
If we want players to take the shot we just need to give them more POINTZZ for making it!
Here’s a fun thought experiment: how many points would a shot from beyond half-court have to be worth for players to be willing to attempt one when called for?
Ideally, this number is also not so high that the regular game would devolve into having four x-point specialists standing in the backcourt to space the floor around Luka’s drives…

There’s been a fair amount of controversy about the foul call at the end of the Liberty game. But the most egregious non call was Stewart blatant travel before the shot attempt. I mean it wasn’t even close, she took like 4 steps before dribbling.

I think teams should just have Designated heaver. Someone like Pritchard who is not obsessed with personal stats. I think it’s pretty easy to calculate someone’s 3pt percentage minus heaves anyway.
Seems like it’ll be increasingly common for teams to nickle and dime their rookie extension candidates a bit unless they’re true no-brainers. I’m all for players getting paid but I did always find it kind of strange that once a player reached a certain threshold, he was almost guaranteed a max or near-max extension.

There’s a way for him to return to the Knicks this season, but it’s extremely convoluted. I think it involves him signing with another team first and then waiving him again, and maybe more or weirder steps before or after. Or maybe that was the previous CBA and now it’s even more complicated. It’s not worth putting too much effort into.
Suggs is a budding star. I think that looks like a bargain, maybe as soon as this season.
Even if he doesn’t shoot (though he shot 39.7% from 3 last season), ORL added a bit of shooting which will unclog the lane for Suggs to barrel down.

Suggs is 2nd Team All-Defense, plays with tons of energy and improved a lot from three last year.

I’d rather invest $150 in Suggs than $225 in Cade Cunningham. As is, Suggs is worth it, and if he improves his shot it’s a bargain. He’s a very good player, and is up there with Jimmy Butler and Gary Payton II in on-court charisma too. I love watching him play.
Leave the health thing out of it. Would you rather have Shamet or Walker for the ninth man, given how well Shamet seemed to fit in with the bench mob before he got hurt?
I think those positional listings are a bit iffy.
Dadiet is 6′ 7.75″ and fairly slow, he’s more of a forward.
McCullar is closer to 6′ 5.25″. He’s more of a guard or small forward.
Kolek is definitely a PG. Maybe he can share the court with Payne, but I’d expect them to split PG duties.
Deuce can play either G position. Probably more of a SG than a PG though.
Jalen Johnson and Sengun both signed rookie extensions right before the deadline: Johnson 5/150, Sengun 5/185, but with the last year a player option.

It’s very hard for me to put health aside with Shamet because even if he nominally recovers, a shoulder injury like that seems like a long-term concern for a pure gunner type. That said, he did seem to fit in really well and you never have to worry about him basketball IQ, which isn’t the case for Lonnie.
I’ll still take Lonnie though. Genuine upside is hard to come by with a minimum slot and Lonnie has it. I’m not even sure he’s a worse pure shooter than Shamet, that just hasn’t really been his role. I’ve said it before but Lonnie shooting as well as he did while only being assisted on 71% of his 3PM is pretty intriguing.
Jalen Johnson is very good, but I do not think he should be making close to what Suggs makes. Not sure if Suggs should be up or Johnson down.
Unless, of course, that’s the max they can do. I’d probably go lower on Johnson in that case.
watched a lot of jalen johnson last year and i believe the hype. think he has a very high two way ceiling. also like that deal for atlanta despite his short resume.
Think kicking the can down the road until it’s financially possible to sign Ronnie + Bojan (Brooklyn will likely buy him out) or another vet would be a type of briliant move that we have come to expect from Leon and Brock.
