What a Cavs-Knicks playoff matchup could look like Cavs Nation

We’re at a point where I’m more worried about the Dallas pick conveying than I am about our playoff seeding. It’s not impossible that we’d fall out of the top 6, but it seems incredibly unlikely. And we’re going to face a steep uphill battle no matter who we draw in the first round. Whereas the Dallas thing is a real nail-biter, considering how many teams are clustered around the West’s last play-in spot.
I also appreciate what EB wrote at the end of the previous thread, about Dallas’ relative ease of schedule versus NOLA’s. This is still much too close for comfort.
I really am not sure this is true, so I looked up this season’s head to head records.
Boston is 1 and 3 against us but 2 and 0 against Toronto.
Milwaukee is 3 and 0 against both Toronto and us.
Philadelphia is 2 and 2 against us and 2 and 1 against Toronto.
Cleveland is 1 and 3 against Toronto and 1 and 2 against us.
The numbers don’t really support your statement. If I were Boston I’d much rather play Toronto and the other teams probably don’t care that much.
The West is just so insane right now, 3 games separate the 4th seed from the 11th seed!
And among those teams you have the Warriors, the Lakers and the Suns with KD’s return imminent. You could end up with the first or second best record in the West and have to play one of those teams in the first round.
Don’t think we’re gonna see much load management the next few weeks lol.
Something that’s funny to me..
I have been feeling under the weather since yesterday and didn’t get any sleep last night. So a friend of mine who isn’t into sports that much, but follows- texted to see if I was feelin better. Upon me saying I feel better but I didn’t get any sleep last night, my friend says “well maybe you can catch up on sleep tonight”. Then my friend responded incredulously to my response of, “Nah..Knicks vs Miami tonight. I HAVE TO WATCH. I hate that team”
“Why tho?”, she said. “It’s not the Bulls from the Jordan days or high school rivalry”
So I sent her Charlie Ward vs PJ Brown and the JVG incident along with the Pat Riley back story. So she says, “Oh..I get it. Bloodlust. Carry on.”
LOL
“The numbers don’t really support your statement. If I were Boston I’d much rather play Toronto and the other teams probably don’t care that much.”
I was saying that kinda tongue-in-cheek to mess with BBA, the larger point i was making in context is that it’s probably closer than the disparity in record would suggest. TOR has probably underachieved all year, remember when we were wondering whether they were going to blow it up before the trade deadline? On January 21 they were 20-27. Since then they’ve gone 18-11, same record as us in that stretch. They have a long, lanky roster and a very good coach. They made a great deadline move and filled a major hole in acquiring Poeltl.
I would throw out the pre-Poeltl record and judge them on what they have shown in the last 30 games. On that basis, it’s probably pretty even but their defensive length and coaching, along with Randle’s volubility, might tilt the scales.
The new playoff format seems to be working pretty well to inject some interest into the end of the season. Seems like VAR, one of those changes which actually worked.
The baseball rule changes probably going to end up in the same category.
Poindexter, that’s funny!
I’m actually going to the game tonight with my son and a close buddy and his son (great seats!) My buddy (who I used to share season tickets with during the entire Ewing era) also invited us to a pre-game special event at MSG where LJ and others will be present. Should be a great atmosphere, tix prices on stubhub are out of control! Hopefully we pull this one out and can relax a bit re: seeding.
Owen, I totally agree. Just as importantly, it seems really fair. There is so little daylight between the 6-10 seeds that having a hard cutoff at #8 screwed a lot of good-ish teams in the past. I like that the 7-8 teams still have to prove their worthiness, but with deserved advantages.
Any update on injury status for Butler? I saw an unconfirmed report that he was “doubtful” here, but hard to believe he’d miss this one unless it’s pretty serious.
https://www.sportskeeda.com/basketball/news-is-jimmy-butler-playing-tonight-knicks-latest-injury-update-heat-s-star-ahead-matchup-march-29-2023
On another note, small sample size on their SB blog but it seems like some Heat fans are ready for them to tank and rebuild. Obviously Jimmy would want no part of that, but it also seems like the high mileage is starting to wear him down, making a lopsided all-in trade for him an iffy proposition.
Awful quiet here on such an epic game day…
Other news:
Brunson is questionable for tonight. If Butler is ruled out, should Brunson sit even if he feels “better”?
Joel Embiid is questionable with lingering calf tightness. If both he and Harden is out, the Mavs will be hard-pressed to lose….
The calm before the storm! 😀

no idea if he’ll play but it’s obvious the injury was a real thing. last night’s game was a good bit more important to them than tonight is. but neck problems are unpredictable and can improve quickly.
Awful quiet here on such an epic game day…
Hard to post an insightful comment on the game when the best player on each team may or may not play, and hard to post a comment on another topic given the importance of the game…
“Brunson is questionable for tonight. If Butler is ruled out, should Brunson sit even if he feels “better”?”
I think if he can go, we should play Brunson to secure the win and keep us out of the play-in. I wish Thibs would manage these guys minutes better. Having a banged up and worn down Brunson could become a problem. I think a 9 man rotation is fine as long as you actually play the “situational” guys situationally, and not let them rot on the bench. Telling guys to be ready is not enough to keep them engaged and sharp.
I don’t think Dallas has any easy games remaining considering they lost to Charlotte twice last week.
Apropos of nothing, and to fill in the time, I give you my favorite quote of the day and perfect summary description, from The Ringer’s League Pass Player Rankings:
“Dolan’s a pompous, glob-shaped dingus.”
I remember in 2020-21 that positioning came down to the very last game vs. the Celts and we won in a sort of nailbiter. In fact we had to win 4 of our last 5, and all of them were close (2 of them were OT). It’s hard to know whether having to play at that high level took a toll or actually had them more ready. Whatever, it would be nice to put the 5th seed away with like 3 games left so we can selectively rest guys. Maybe even give Fournier and Rose some run in case they are needed. Hey, you never know!
“but neck problems are unpredictable and can improve quickly.”
Yeah, we’ve all had the crick in the neck thing, the first 24-48 hours suck but it usualy loosens up in a couple of days even without treatment. My guess is that he plays.
I think if he can go, we should play Brunson to secure the win and keep us out of the play-in.
Completely agree GK. One of the side benefits of avoiding the play-in is the additional rest you have before the playoffs. If we locked a play-off spot early, we could rest people the last game and it would give us at least 8 days of rest (versus playing hard our last game April 9, then having a play-in game on the 11th and a possible second game on the 14th).
yeah in fact i am hero typing with it right now going on two weeks. but i’m still probable for the game bc i’m no jimmy butter.
*** seems like the high mileage is starting to wear him down, making a lopsided all-in trade for him an iffy proposition. ***
Butler, at age 33, has had his best season yet, shattering career bests in TS%, TS+, WS/48, and BPM. He’s also played more games and minutes this season than he has since his Thibs days.
Who has had a career arc like Butler’s, where he peaks in his mid-30s? Sam Cassell is the only person who really comes to mind, but he wasn’t a perennial all-star BEFORE his peak like Butler’s been.
I think 33 year olds like Butler and Lillard, who did four years of college, keep themselves in great shape, and don’t have history of chronic injury, are safe bets over the next few years.
“Awful quiet here on such an epic game day…”
I’m already drinking.
I agree with Z-Man on Toronto. I’ve been saying they are better than they look all season and I also loved that deadline move. I’d disregard their overall record and look at their more recent record. I don’t want to cherry pick the starting point to make my point better, but they are better than they look.
The Mavs schedule:
@76ers
@Miami
@Atlanta
Sacramento
Chicago
San Antonio
That’s doesn’t look so easy to me.
2 of 3 of the road games are tough and one is no gimme.
“Maybe” Sacramento will be comfortable with their position and take a night off, but if they come to win, that’s tough.
They should beat the Bulls at home, but they are still battling and playing better since they added Beverley to replace Ball at PG.
Let’s give them the Spurs.
Is this summer Randle’s peak trading value? – I get that he turned the corner and having an amazing season but the same body language and attitude signs have been playing peak-a-boo all month. Just feels like a house of cards.
If the right package presented itself, – I wouldn’t be opposed to sell at peak value for once before the actual bubble bursts.
“If the right package presented itself, – I wouldn’t be opposed to sell at peak value for once before the actual bubble bursts.”
Randle is trying hard in multiple ways to make NY his permanent home, but I also think he’s also a bubble in search of a pin. It’s hard to argue against your view. It should at least be on the table.
“yeah in fact i am hero typing with it right now going on two weeks. but i’m still probable for the game bc i’m no jimmy butter.”
Butler now listed as probable. ptmilo cleared to watch at no less than a 60 degree angle, must close eyes every time Randle or RJ in iso mode…
I believe the name you’re looking for here is Steve Nash, who leapt from All-Star to MVP level in his 30’s and had a better stretch from 30-37 than he did from 23-29.
Here’s a crazy thing:
When Steve Nash won his first of two undeserved MVP awards, LeBron James was probably the best player in the basketball.
Since then, I have become legally aged to drink alcohol in the U.S., graduated from three different institutions, fallen ass-backwards into a career, moved like four times, bought a house, gotten smartly married and stupidly divorced, and wasted an uncountable number of hours on Knickerblogger.net. And LeBron James is currently sitting at 13th in BPM during an injury-riddled season.
I know that the COVID lab thing is the conspiracy du jour, but we really should be trying to figure out which branch of the military paid for and executed the development of the LEBRON Program
“I know that the COVID lab thing is the conspiracy du jour”
They’ve moved on to Ebola is also lab produced.
“LEBRON Program”
I’m still of the opinion that a lot of modern athletes are using something. It may not be on some official list of illegal substances because the authorities haven’t figured what it is or how to test for it yet, but it’s out there. If they are using all kinds of impossible to detect crap on horses (and they are), there’s a human version out there.
It’s got to be high dose Meldonium.

to restore contractility to hypoxic heart tissue,
to increase the contractile capacity of the heart by increasing ATP concentration,
to prevent decrease of ATP levels under various conditions,
to reduce isoproteronol or catecholamine-induced myocardial injury,
to protect the heart against fatty diets,

to promote reparative and replicative DNA synthesis,
to increase translation of nucleic acids (protein synthesis),
