Thinking more and more that drafting a big would be a (no pun intended) big mistake. The 3 point shot is such a game changer that playing two bigs is essentially untenable in today’s NBA. Sure you could create mismatches down low on the offensive end, but posting your 2nd big against a small ball 4 creates a relatively low efficiency post-up shot while increasing the chances of a high(er) efficiency 3 point shot at the other end for your opponent. That’s losing math even assuming slightly better rebounding. I haven’t had time to really look into it, but I assume the # minutes played by traditional 5s was at an all-time low this playoff season. I really do like Wendell Carter as a player but I hope the Bulls or Cavs draft him.
I wonder if they’re considering trading KP for a top pick? I wouldn’t necessarily be against it.
@3 – highly doubt it. his trade value would be at an all-time low right now. between that and all the love KP has been shown from Fizdale, it seems really unlikely…
I really do like Wendell Carter as a player but I hope the Bulls or Cavs draft him.
I get the reluctance, but I feel the opposite. The vast majority of unplayable bigs were either terrible defenders or lacked versatility. If and only if you think WCJ turns into a good defender, I think you can do fine pairing him with KP despite some obvious trade offs. Having two genuine rim protectors can mitigate some of the switch and perimeter problems and allow more overplaying and hard hedging. Gobert and Favors played together quite a bit this year and were very effective including in the playoffs. KP is not Gobert, sure, but even Gobert struggles when pulled out of drop down mode, so some of the exploiting strategies would rhyme. Taj Gibson and KAT were also pretty effective together for much of the year, and that’s really an unfair comp bc KAT is nowhere near the defender KP is most of the time.
As dramatically as the small ball tide has turned, it’s also true that there are almost no examples of teams with two bigs who are both plus defenders with rim protection and bring versatility on offense. The offensive advantages aren’t just about post-ups when you can run out two guys like that. You can stick one in the corner and force a small defense to guard a genuine roller like WCJ in a PNR with their second-biggest guy (who might be someone like Tatum) while helping with the third biggest guy, who might Eric Gordon. You also get a big ORB advantage.
If you like WCJ and think he can at least end up between Favors and Horford defensively, I think you pray for him to fall despite question marks about the fit.
@5 – I guess so. I wouldn’t be upset with us drafting Carter — I just think I’d rather have a wing or Trae Young.
0%.
Re yesterday’s Huerter discussion. I’m no player evaluation expert so I don’t have a view on how good a pick he might be, but I will say this… picking him at 9 would be asset mismanagement of the worst degree.
If you alight on a player whose projected slot is so far behind your pick you have to explore trading back – otherwise you’re simply leaving money on the table by picking him when you could have him plus additional assets.
It’s a bit like last year when Reub was asvocating taking Diallo at 8 (ironic, since now people have seen him play we may end up passing on him at 36). It’s fine to think you’ve seen something other teams have missed but that’s when you’ve created an opportunity to exploit an inefficiency.
Tatum last year is the index case. Boston loved him, could have just picked him at 1, but knew others were willing to pay for that slot to pick players Boston didn’t want. And they walked away with the guy they wanted and an unprotected first.
That is good pick management.
I think the choice about Carter gets back to what I’ve said in the past. “Best player available” is almost unquestionably the right thing to do from a theoretical perspective, but when you are drafting 19 year old kids, it’s a lot tougher to determine who the best player available is than it used to be. So you have to weigh the degree of confidence you have in the potential selection vs. whether the player fills a need vs. how desperate that need is vs. how difficult it will be to fill later.
NY needs a SF most.
Does Carter fill a need also?
How much better is Carter than the possible SF options?
How sure are we that Carter is better than the possible SF options?
If we go with Carter, how hard will it be to get a quality starting SF via trade or free agency in the future?
ok so just in time, the Stepien published their scouting report on Carter. So never mind, I’m totally sold on him lol
https://www.thestepien.com/2018/06/11/wendell-carter-quick-enough-todays-nba/
@8 I’d agree with that, but there’d have to be a team that likes either Bridges or Sexton enough to trade back. I currently have Huerter as my #9 prospect in this draft, so the only way I’d trade out of #9 is if that consensus top 8 is gone. The Clippers at 12 and 13 would make some sense there, but I don’t think the right to secure Collin Sexton is worth two 1st round picks. Somebody like MPJr or Trae Young would have to be sitting there, and at that point I’d rather sit tight and take one of them than go for Kevin Huerter. Maybe Phoenix is eager to move into the 9 slot and offers 16, 31, and a future pick if Collin Sexton is still available.
The biggest thing is always talent…. part of the reason why 4 out offenses work is because of the lack of quality big men with diverse skills on the offensive end… for whatever reason big men are just very limited in what they can do now….
if you have enough talent you can make it work…. and really the only teams that have enough high end frontcourt talent also happen to be pretty good teams in their own right…. the spurs… jazz…. and pelicans are all solid playoff teams….
you start following trends then you start compromising on talent… and that’s generally going to end up badly for you….
I don’t have any issue with the two big concept working on offense with KP and theoretically Wendell Carter – it’s the defensive end that I’m worried about.
FWIW the Pelicans were obviously better with Mirotic + AD than they were with Cousins and AD, although I’m not sure that’s due to anything other than AD finally deciding to take over as opposed to sharing the ball with Cousins.
I’m pretty sure Carter won’t be there, but if he is TAKE HIM. His stats are terrific for a 19-year-old and having two bigs that can shoot over 40% from three is a fine problem to have, I’ll take it all day.
I actually think he’ll be better than KP if he doesn’t defer too much, but like I said, he won’t be there at 9.
So you have to weigh the degree of confidence you have in the potential selection vs. whether the player fills a need vs. how desperate that need is vs. how difficult it will be to fill later.
you are missing a critical variable. player forecasting is highly uncertain, but you know what else is uncertain for a shitty team with few reliable veterans? need forecasting. we have no idea what position the Knicks will need to fill when it matters. maybe frank will turn out to be a 3. maybe frank doesn’t improve kp comes back poorly from injury and we have literally equivalent needs at every position. maybe we luck into the next RoCo from the scrap heap. we are talking about 2-3-4-stop me please years from now. the position we will need most in 2020 may be just as uncertain as which bridges will be worse.
when you add that uncertainty to the fact that it’s much easier to balance a lopsided team of good assets than it is to turn a team of bad assets into good assets, it seems plain that a bad team should err on the side of bpa unless it is literally agnostic. sure, the kings
might want to shy away from young bc it’s pretty hard to develop two small pgs together. but as long as you can play the guy you’re drafting the dregs like us ought to be placing our bets.
Yeah, the Pelicans were pretty interesting last year. WS and WP had Cousins as a good but not great player last season, while BPM and RPM had him as one of the best players in the NBA. But the Pelicans were able to replace him with inferior players and stay pretty much the same.
Wendell Carter Jr will be going in the top 8. He’s a potential two way all star with an NBA ready body and he only turned 19 two months ago. If he didn’t play with Marvin Bagley I think he’d be in consideration for the #1 overall pick, so I highly doubt that he’s going to slide past Dallas let alone fall to #9.
The only way any of the top 8 guys falls is if a team like Cleveland or Orlando takes Collin Sexton or Mikal Bridges. Otherwise, we’re taking Mikal Bridges. Barring any trades, I think the draft will fall:
Ayton
Bagley
Bamba
Doncic
Carter Jr
Jackson Jr
Porter Jr
Young
Mikal Bridges
I’m still looking for reasons to be excited about Mikal Bridges. His age, lack of lateral quickness, and unrefined offensive game give him the lowest ceiling of all the lottery picks and his funky jumper make me question his ceiling. I can’t help but look at him and see Justin Holiday, and that scares me.
I get what you’re saying. This is a problem Kristaps brings to the table. He can’t rebound well enough to be a 5 on defense, he can’t guard the perimeter well enough to be a 4. We’ll need to find someone with rare abilities to compensate for that: either a perimeter player with exceptional rebounding skills, or another big who can be effective on defense all over the court. If you draft Carter, you’re doing it because you think he can be the latter.
I don’t think KP’s rebounding issues are the end of the world because guards are starting to grab more boards in today’s NBA. I think we would be in great shape if we took Jarred Vanderbilt at 36 and let him develop as our power forward. What KP gives up in rebounding he makes up for with 3 point shooting at the 5, so you don’t need a power forward who can shoot, only one that rebounds, defends, and adds to the ball movement on offense. Vanderbilt and Porzingis seem like a match made in heaven, and that’s a buy low opportunity there.
@19 – the perimeter player with exceptional rebounding skills could be Miles Bridges I guess.
Where’s Rasheed Wallace when we need him lol
Justin holiday was a lot worse in college than Mikal bridges… he’s never approached Mikal’s volume… he was a role player in college and he’s been a 9th or 12 guy in the pro’s… Mikal probably has more in common with trevor ariza with an already developed shot….
the ceiling probably won’t be too much higher but getting what ariza was at 29 in a 22 yo puts his trajectory higher if he can add anything else to his game…. that’s a very worthy lotto pick in any draft even with the perceived value in this one…
@16
I certainly agree that we can’t be sure what our “need” will be several years out and that balancing our team will be easier than finding talent later.
Here’s my problem.
If you put a gun to my head right now and asked me to rank BPA in my order of preference, I could certainly create a list for you. I could also be delusional enough to think I did a good job of it. I probably wouldn’t. I’m not that good. IMO, the confidence level most people have in their ability to estimate BPA is out of line with reality.
I can tell the difference between 1 and 10.
Most of the time I can’t tell the difference between 8, 9 or 10.
Maybe it’s better to rank players as As, Bs, and Cs. I’d always take an A over a B and a B over a C. But if we are taking about two Bs, it may be close enough to a coin flip to go with need instead of getting stuck with a glut at one position that slows the development of some players or trying to find what you need later.
On the flip side, if you are demonstrably that good (you specifically or some management) and you know you can separate 8 and 9 often enough to be statistically significant, but all means go for it. Take the guy you have marked as BPA. I’m with you.
Knox has a very nice touch on that jump shot for sure! Needs to work on his handle though. The only thing that gives me pause it that he doesn’t seem explosive. His movements remind me of Frank actually. He is really young though and I anticipate this kid would really help our team on the offensive end.
If one of the top 8 guys falls to the Knicks at 9, they have to take him. It is unlikely but not impossible that TY or WCJ falls, and the Knicks should not overthink it…just take him unless a killer trade back offer comes in.
I’d prefer a good wing like Mikal Bridges, but TY and WCJ are talents that you can’t pass up.
The only guy that might give me pause is MPJ. If he does fall on draft night, is it b/c teams are scared off by the back injury? I’m not saying I wouldn’t take him in such a scenario, but I’d have to take big gulp or two of a, um, beverage, first…
I’m not as worried about KP’s rebounding as I was before either. I think part of it is his role on the team on the perimeter and helping out on defense, part is his lack of strength, and part is an unwillingness to mix it up and possibly get hurt against bigger guys. If he moves to the 5 when he’s stronger or when the other team is playing smaller, I think he’ll rebound a little better. He’ll probably never be what we’d call a good rebounder for a C, but as long as he’s OK and we pair him correctly I’ll be more than happy if he scores efficiently in high volume, protects the paint, helps on D, and learns to make plays a little better.
It will get interesting at the Bulls pick. I assume Young will be off the board and it will be between maybe Carter and Porter? I could see them going Carter or even Sexton over Porter, and I can see Cleveland going Sexton or Mikal in order to please Lebron. So yeah, unless a top 6 team takes a BIG risk on Porter, he could definitely fall to us. I have mixed feelings, but I think you have to take him if he’s there.
Trading KP now would be a reverse Danny Ainge move – deal a player when his value is diminished and then watch him flourish on another team.
Ainge deals players when their value is at its peak (Thomas, Crowder and Bradley) and lets other teams deal with their decline.
BPA is good theory, but like Strat points out it’s not as easy in practice, because a lot of times it is pretty unclear who the BPA actually is. This draft, for example, I think the #1 pick is pretty easy-you take Doncic, he’s pretty clearly the best player available. At #2? I don’t know. You could make a case for a bunch of guys.
We were an absolutely horrific rebounding team when KP was the center and there were no other true bigs on the court — per cleaningtheglass –> 1st percentile in ORB% (as in we were the worst) and 1st in DRB% (as in we were the worst). Now granted KP was not playing next to good rebounders in general, so it’s sort of “what do you expect?” but that was mucho bad.
That said – those lineups still had a +2.3 net rating.
Now replace Lance or McDermott with someone like Miles Bridges and put good rebounding guards like Dotson (93rd percentile in DRB% for wings) on the court, and it might not be that bad.
I guess I’d have Ayton as the clear #2 with the caveat that I don’t know anything about scouting defense. His age, offensive production and very good rebounding suggest he’ll be a productive NBA player even if he is a poor team defender. Assuming the concerns about his defense are real I wouldn’ t be surprised if he’s not the second best NBA player in the draft but his floor seems pretty high.
Did KP have a better rebound % when he played C vs PF?
I think the #1 pick is pretty easy-you take Doncic, he’s pretty clearly the best player available. At #2? I don’t know. You could make a case for a bunch of guys.
sure, there can be plenty of cases where you’re genuinely agnostic or should be and then of course choose for positional fit or who is more likely to stay after four years or whatever. but the threshold for “having a view” on bpa should be really low bc the long run cost of positional duplication for a shitty team is miniscule in most cases. if you think WCJ is an A- prospect and Mikal is a B+ prospect with only modest confidence and you are the Knicks I still think you take WCJ every time.
I really don’t get the love for Carter. He’s good but most definitely not top 5 in this draft class and I put him squarely behind Young, Porter, Bamba or Smith. He plays below the rim and has mediocre lateral quickness. I see him topping out at average defensively. Also, his three-point shot isn’t a sure thing. He only took 46 and shot 74% from the line. He tended to miss badly when harassed and I think playing next to Bagley helped him a lot. He got to benefit from defenses keying off of him rather than at him and he took advantage.
He is not a scrub but he is 10th or 11th on my board and a bad fit with KP. There is no way the Knicks should take him.
Begley says teams picking ahead of us have reached out about the possibility of the Knicks trading up for Porter:
@12 – but this isn’t a marginal gap. You think Huerter is 9th best player in the draft. ESPN has him at 21, nbadraft.net at 18, the Stepien at 20. You don’t need the clips to be willing to trade 2 firsts. You need one team near the back of the top 20 to prefer any of the guys available between 9 and where they pick enough to offer a decent second asset.
16 and 31 from Phoenix is a great return if Huerter is really your favourite prospect left at 9. Hell, even 16 for 9 straight up saves you $!! These are the marginal gains that stack up. You pick Huerter at 9 you are 100% leaving realisable value on the table.
i’m hoping it’s not for porter… why is that only the bulls are checking him out and why are they writing the medical report? and I mean with the past issues players had with the bulls medical team that seems really fishy to me….
he may have wow’ed folks at his pro day but it’s very easy to look impressive in an empty gym…
@35 it also just came out that the Kings and Mavericks are looking to trade down out of their positions. All we really have to offer is Courtney Lee and a bag of beans, so I don’t see a situation where we trade up.
@36 I agree with you. Trading down for Huerter and another asset or two would make more sense than sitting tight and selecting him. I do wonder if at 9 any team would be willing to trade up, though. I can see Phoenix wanting to move up to 9 if Sexton is on the board so they can get surround Booker with Ayton and Sexton in the same draft. 16, 31, and 36 would be a good draft class for the Knicks, and I don’t think Mikal Bridges will be much better than whoever is available at 16 even if Huerter isn’t the choice.
Idk, I love Frank, but if you are sold on Doncic as a generational player, you do what it takes to get that #2 pick once Ayton’s name is called.
As for KP, you guys are such homers when it comes to him. He’s a great rim defender, but overall, a pretty average player so far. Yes, he’s 22 – young, but not that young – and now he has a torn ACL. I just think he’s not untouchable for the right offer, that’s all.
And remember, he’s getting maxed soon.
The Suns are also rumoured to be choosing Ayton first… if so, then why would Sacramento AND Dallas be looking to trade down?
If the Doncic rumours about him wanting to choose a bigger market team, you have to imagine the Kings, Grizzlies, Hawks and Magic are out, so that would explain the Kings wanting to move down, but not the Mavericks right?
It’s all making very little sense to me to be honest. I just know I’ll be very pissed if the Bulls somehow end up with doncic without even having to move up.
If Porter is the guy who fell to 9 and Mikal Bridges went in the top 8, I would trade down with the Clippers, who are supposedly high on Porter. I’d rather take Sexton and one of the wings than Porter.
Maybe a little, but
1) His rim protection is elite;
2) His 3-point shooting (for a big) is elite;
3) Those two attributes rarely come in one player, and
4) The league seems to be as enthusiastic as (most of us) are about him as well, so it isn’t just homerism.
Most important to me is that if you trade him for someone like Doncic, you still are at least one great young player away. Somehow we need to add one great young player this draft without losing any of the other great (or potentially great) young players we have. KP may never return at full strength from his injury, and if he does, he may never improve the things he needs to improve to be truly great, but he has a shot at it, and we need players who have a shot at greatness. Big If, but if he and Frank become what they show signs of becoming, and we add a great 2-way player in this draft, we could have an elite defense. From there you sign a great FA in 2019 or 2020 and you have a team that can go deep in the playoffs.
Put another way, when we lost KP we went from an average defense to worst in the league. And that’s factorial.
This forum is probably the most level-headed group of Knicks fans when it comes to KP. By and large, we’re all pretty aware that his production hasn’t matched the hype.
If he were healthy, I think most of us would cash in on him now instead of paying him next year. I actually feel bad about killing Phil Jackson last year, because it turns out he was right to try to extract a haul for him before he got hurt.
You can’t trade him now, though, for 50 cents on the dollar.
I agree about being skeptical towards KP overall ability to overcome his clear deficiencies, particularly after his injury. But I also have some reserves about Doncic. He did fill out in a very problematic way and you wonder if he’s going to take training seriously at the NBA playing a wing position where athleticism and lateral quickness are essential. It’s a quandry because when I look at him I see a James Hardenesque player, but I do wonder about his ethic.
I like the idea of drafting Michael Porter Jr a lot, but I probably wouldn’t trade up for him unless I knew his back was 100% and that I could sit him for a year and Adam Silver wouldn’t be too upset.
If the Clippers are serious about trading up to get Porter that would make me more interested in him also given that Jerry West is advising over there now. It’s just hard to be sure what is true and what is a smokescreen.
Porzingis is pretty much going to be over analyzed because well, he’s the only player in quite some time that we can be hopeful about. He’s a very good rim protector who is a talented yet not very productive offensive player, that’s pretty much it.
I’ve been on record saying I would trade him for Doncic and that’s specially because I still think this team should be fully rebuilding and not retooling, and exchanging Porzingis soon to be max deal for Doncic’s rookie deal helps in that regard. If we could do it while keeping the 9th pick somehow (and future picks) it’s a no brainer, and I would still think carefully about it even if it was KP + the 9th, because for me Doncic is the best player in this draft and a superstar in the making. If he simply plays as expected he’ll probably be at least as productive as KP in the same age and without the injury worries.
KP and the 9Th for Doncic, idk that’s a lot. Maybe the 9th and take back their 16th

I wouldn’t do KP for Doncic even up despite the injury risk.
Given the uncertainty inherent in any draftee I’d want more than just the 1st for KP, and I think we’d be able to get more. I’d be open to moving him, but I think there’s zero chance the Knicks do. He’s too popular with the fans for that trade to be a good career move for Mills and Perry unless the haul was ridiculous.
Put another another way, when we have more minutes to Kanter, Beasley, Mudiay and Burke our defense was awful.
KP is certainly a valuable defender, but probably not single handedly makes your defense league average good
