Okay, so the Dodgers not making the World Series means there won’t be a lockout, right? The 2027 season is saved now? Right? Hello?
How are people feeling about the Andre Drummond of it all after watching him through all these preseason games?
I only saw the highlights from last night, but KAT looks freaking ready. Which is exciting.
Edwards with predictions on things that might happen this season: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7683904/2026/10/16/knicks-season-predictions-jalen-brunson-mvp/?unlocked_article_code=1.JFE.qtj6.Sy8h4w00-rgr&source=emp_shared_article&smid=ta-ios-share
As Z-Man alluded to last night is that what made the Knicks really stand out in the playoffs is that they had six good-to-great NBA starters, which meant that they typically had three good-to-great NBA starters on the court at all times in the playoffs.
That was a huge advantage.
But, well, hey, they still have five good-to-great NBA starters, so that’s something (it really IS something)!
The Dodgers winning the World Series would only have made the owners’ rhetoric more popular. It wasn’t driving their rhetoric, so I don’t think it will have much effect one way or the other.
However, I think they’ll work out a deal before any baseball is lost, and it will not involve a salary cap.
Alan, you look freaking ready too. Keep the comments coming. 😉
Hey Alan, hope you are feeling better!
I thought Drummond, given his limitations, looked fantastic last night. Here’s a highlight reel. While every bit the limbering big, he is moving and jumping pretty well compared to baseline expectations. What is standing out to me is freaky his 7’6.25″ wingspan. Seems like he doesn’t have to get up all that high to contest or block shots, it’s more about being in position, and he seems to be getting there better than he did in Philly. He is showing some passing chops, and can dribble a little bit. He had one very impressive rumble to the hoop where he took Poeltl off the dribble across the lane for a scoop finger roll at the rim.
Honestly, he seems more like a poor man’s KAT than a poor man’s Mitch. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, especially since that makes Wiseman our only true “change of pace” big. But it seems like Brown can insert Drummond into the game without changing the offense all that much, which will be important in the games that KAT is unavailable.
Wiseman only played a couple of minutes last night, but he seems to be taking baby steps towards being viable.
Gonna be interesting to see if Knicks trade either Dadiet or Kolek to open up a roster spot for Brown.
You could tell last night that this team is fired up and ready to go. I would attribute that to Brunson and Brown. In the recent GM poll, Brunson was voted “Best Leader,” getting 53% of the votes. And Brown is well acquainted with what it’s like to try to repeat from his days in Golden State.
I meant lumbering big, he ain’t all that limber!
Alan, that’s interesting about Sims. I guess the market for big men is strong at the moment snd Sims is benefiting. Do the Brewers have extra big men that they can let him go? They seem to like him.
“Do the Brewers have extra big men that they can let him go?”
He struggles to hit the curveball, so maybe….
Seriously, the Bucks have Myles Turner, Kel’el Ware, and maybe Nate Ament as their big rotation, and can probably pick one up off the scrap heap.
I feel pretty good about Drummond as an innings eater. This may change somewhat with the tanking reforms, but generally speaking very good teams don’t need great defense from their backup center to get through the regular season. Drummond will get the rebounds he needs to get, and some more, and be sufficiently enormous for basic rim protection, even if he’ll be unplayable against teams that pressure the rim legitimately well. The playmaking chops and whatever threes he can hit will be a bonus.
I still think we simply do not have a championship caliber center rotation, though. If/when KAT gets two quick fouls in any remotely tough playoff matchup, there’s a very good chance that we’re looking at one of the worst players on either team getting 20+ minutes of run, whether it’s Drummond or Wiseman. That’s hard to sustain.
That said, if we’re able to add Bruce Brown, and it seems like things are trending in that direction, I think he’ll become a fan favorite in short order and will materially help our wing depth. Even if it’s just helping us weather injuries during the regular season, the guy is a working class man’s Josh Hart, and it’s better to have two of those guys than one. I like the idea of him playing off Point KAT a lot, assuming the latter is here to stay.
Re: Wiseman, it’ll be interesting to see what happens if Cisse is actually cut…would still strongly, strongly prefer him to Wiseman.
I dunno about Bruce Brown. It’s looking more and more like his performance in 2022-23 was an outlier, and he has pretty much sucked ever since. I don’t see any need for a 6’4″ emergency wing on this team, especially one who a capped-out team like Denver had no interest in retaining on a minimum deal.
If the Mavs cut Cicce, it’s a strong indication that he sucks as bad as Wiseman. Otherwise, why would they keep a washed-up geezer like Dwight Powell over him when they are still in the process of rebuilding? It would have to mean that they concluded that he has zero trade value.
“Honestly, he seems more like a poor man’s KAT than a poor man’s Mitch. I don’t know if that’s a good thing or not, especially since that makes Wiseman our only true “change of pace” big. Exactamundo! That’s what I’ve been saying all along. Drum is great for our roster, but we still need a young, tall, defensive-minded guy for our third center spot.
Kel’el Ware is unlikely to ever end up on anyone’s scrap heap. I’m mostly still watching Dallas and Sacramento for spare bigs let go over the next few days.
BTW I think the Dallas FO comes to its senses and cuts Powell.
My only comment about our center rotation is that KAT went on Hot Ones and was even more dominant than he was in the playoffs. Didn’t take a sip. Didn’t even flinch. Might be a first ballot Hot Ones Hall of Famer.
Was also very interesting about Xs and Os and on the 7th or 8th wing, very funny about his teammates…
Dwight Powell is 35 years old. Not exactly what I’d have in mind, given Drummond’s age.
KI26, I wasn’t suggesting that we go after Powell, only that the Mavs would be dumb to keep him and cut Cisse.
that Hot Ones series is hysterical…especially love the folks who talk a bunch of shit, and are crying like 10 minutes later…
interested to see KAT tackle some of the hot stuff…
ha, how nice to watch los angeles and their 300 billion dollar roster get humbled and swept…
never see those yanks stumbling and bumbling like that on their way to some ignominous playoff end…
sometimes being a sports fan ain’t all that…
was nice to see an effective 2 man game with KAT and jalen last night…
still expecting us to lose 8 to 10 of our first 20 games…we shall see though…
That’s very weird! How would that not be resolved before he was drafted?
I’m guessing that Bruce Brown is cut and that the Knicks go with Wiseman and keep Dadiet and Kolek until further notice, probably until December 15 when a bunch of guys become trade-eligible…unless some can’t refuse trade or waiver wire opportunity comes up before then. Which is fine by me! Let’s fucking go!!!!!
NBA versus some spanish club…buena suerte con eso..
If we’re keeping Brown would make more sense roster wise to trade Kolek instead of Dadiet even though Kolek is clearly the more NBA ready talent.
Yeah tbh I’d prefer keeping Dadiet to wasting draft assets just to move him.
I’m actually pretty psyched on our rotation… but if even one guy in it gets injured, that’s when things get dicey.
But our top 9-10 guys are TOUGH.
“I still think we simply do not have a championship caliber center rotation, though. Maybe, but winning a championship is contingent upon getting to the finals. Which C rotation in the EC would you prefer over ours?
And in the West, there’s Wemby and Kornet, and Jokic and Bagley. Those were the only 2 ranked in the recent Athletic position ranking article, and it clearly had nothing to do with the backup.
“I’m actually pretty psyched on our rotation… but if even one guy in it gets injured, that’s when things get dicey.”
There are many teams that can say that. If SGA gets hurt, OKC becomes Charlotte. We already saw Denver without Jokic last season, and it wasn’t pretty.
I don’t know, man…. We just saw MLB team versus some Wisconsin club and it wasn’t even close.
“I’m actually pretty psyched on our rotation… but if even one guy in it gets injured, that’s when things get dicey.”
I would say that without one of Brunson, OG, or KAT for an extended period, we could be in trouble, particularly against the best teams. But we also have lots of flexibility and resilience on the roster. Brown would probably have to “Thibs” the minutes distribution, but I don’t think it would be insurmountable for a few weeks.
Brunson: You can shift the scoring to other players and run Alvarado, Deuce, and Kolek out there.
KAT: Just game-plan to Drummond’s strengths and go small with OG at C
OG: put Mo in and play Josh PT at the PF spot; go big with KAT at PF.
Everyone else has clear analogs on the bench.
“There are many teams that can say that. If SGA gets hurt, OKC becomes Charlotte. We already saw Denver without Jokic last season, and it wasn’t pretty.”
Any team that loses its best player to injury is in some level of trouble, and for most, that goes for their second or third best players as well. But we are in a better position than most.
Idk, with our weakened defense, I was more thinking that losing a bench player for any significant time would hurt enough to lose us multiple close games, although I guess these are normal problems.
In the end, we just have to muddle through the season and hope for pretty much full health come the playoffs like we had last year.
what country is wisconsin in…some of these foreign places have the weirdest names…
another day in the south bay…man, I love it here…
easy to forget you’re in a big sprawling city, that is until you get out on the streets…so many cars, half of which don’t even have no one driving them…
i’m getting old…
sis’s surgery went super smooth…the chemo stuff did it’s job and shrunk the cancer masses down quite a bit…yay…
also got to visit bestest friend to geo last night…always shocked and amazed she still lets me in the door…
too many times the last few years i’ve disappeared and been gone for months on end…I myself am a big believer in the whole: best ability is often availability…doing my best to stay connected…gotta just keep trying…
funny just how social ma and sis are, seems they can and will talk with just about any one…oh well…
today will be a bunch of chauffeuring and hanging out patiently…
so post some interesting shit please…
just found out, first stop of the day includes meeting some folks, I don’t already know…
gonna remind myself that speaking isn’t always a prerequiste for social interaction…
sitting quietly, smiling and nodding usually fools folks in to thinking i’m present…really only thinking of being back in bed with my bestie…
oh yeah, and thinking about you guys too…have a fun friday folks…
yes, I am in fact – on drugs…and weed too…
Geo, sorry to hear about your sister (may have missed it in previous posts) but nice to hear things are improving. As I commented to Hubie a few days ago without the parentheses, keep on doing the right thing (family comes first!), keep hoping (Knicks should be last but definitely on the shortlist!!), and keep posting (preferably here!!!).
“yes, I am in fact – on drugs…and weed too…”
LOL Why do you keep telling us that? Also, isn’t weed drugs?
Good to see Silver taking action on certain bets, but he has to live with fending off the frozen snake he allowed in.
well mister doogie now that you ask…
i’m a bit grevious of the fact that I take a handful of pills daily, a few are simply dietary supplements, but a bunch are for legit biological malware stuff going on with me…
so, “i’m on drugs” is a bit of an ironical thing to me…good news is, bloodwork is working out well these days…
times I don’t do weed = at home alone…even then on occasion…lots lots less than when i’m around others…
stay away from anti-anxiety meds while driving…just do the counting in my head thing, and grind my teeth a bunch…those meds slow your reaction times down considerably, not really safe to drive…
yeah, give a new yorker half a chance to lament – endlessly, see if they don’t…pretty sure I can turn near any situation in to a woe is me moment…
Happy Friday, geo! just ran 2.5 miles in your honor. Took it slow, 12 minute pace. I mostly do the elliptical but wanted to give the legs a chance to stretch a little bit and while I know I’ll be really sore tomorrow, it felt really good. Push through, take it slow, embrace the pain. Good mantra, no?
it is a well earned gift to be able to run a couple of miles…
ha, 12 minute pace is blazing speed to me 😊
I like him. Although I didn’t actually watch the preseason. I’ve just been talking myself into him all summer.
I don’t like him vis a vis Mitch. But I’m not going to hold him to the Mitch standard because it’s not his fault Dolan pulled a Dolan.
The one thing about Drummond that bugs me is that the Sixers, who always need a backup center, didn’t want to keep him. Not only that, they preferred Ariel Hukporti to Andre Drummond in a win now year. That makes me wonder.
Probably just wanted to go more youthful, and going from Drummond to Huk definitely achieves that objective.
Or maybe they’re just dumbasses. Sometimes it’s just that simple.
I think it’s a fair thing to wonder about, but Philly has been a weird organization. to play for, and dealing with Embiid’s circus probably didn’t help.
I think of him more like Clarkson, who played in a non-serious situation for a couple of years and got more serious here.
thanks BE 😊
good health care doesn’t always happen, and even with that things don’t always work out the way you hope…
fortunately, kind of like mister al, sis has some really good folks looking after her…
been super blessed not to have experienced a lot of loss, this is my first time seeing the cancer treatment stuff up close…it’s pretty grueling…keep hope throughout the process, listen to the techs, nurses and docs and try to keep your body healthy…
seeing just how important a good support system can be…
I think some of it is Andre got “exposed” against us but I also think the back up center position in Philly is a tough gig because you’re basically going to be a part time starter with Embiid and Andre is good as a back up but not great as a starter?
And I think maybe they just saw the upside and youth with Huk and thought that was worth gambling on?
There was a shifting situation with the Sixers last year where at times Adem Bona was the #2 and getting the heavy minutes either to start in Embiid’s place or be the primary backup, with Drummond #3. That was the case for a significant part of the second half of the season, though we did see more Drummond than Bona in the playoffs.
Believe that Sixers let Drummond go viewing Bona as the #2, or at least on par with Hukporti as the #2/#3. Bona got hurt playing for Turkey in FIBA play, which is why we saw Hukporti start that exhibition game. Bona will miss all of pre-season play, but may be back for the start of the regular season.
Will add that in the aftermath of the Huk injury, there are rumblings that the Sixers are monitoring the Moussa Cisse situation, along with NYK.
The Sixers would *have* to have more money to offer Cisse than us, right? We have next to nothing. But we do have equity as current world champs, and the Sixers, well…….don’t.
I understand the concens as I shared them too.
However, this Ozempic Drummond is a different player from last two years in Philadelphia in which he warmed the bench for Adem Bona.
Minus 30-35 pounds made a big difference in his bounce and foot speed. If he keeps his weight off or gets to a point where he takes off the tshirt because he lost another 15 pounds, – then he may just be our answer for the postseason.
Btw, garden was sold out with tourist last night. On my left were french and brasil on other side. Felt like it did during the shitty years. Fans coudn’t even muster DE-FENCE chants.
However, my son and I both received “Knicks in five gretings all afternoon. Think around 8 or 9 of them; from undexpected folks too.
Geo, sending strength to you and your sister from this side of the atlantic. 🫂
Hey Doogie – the Pels just waived 7’1” Hunter Dickinson. Thoughts?
We’ve talked about Dickinson here before. He’s definitely a true center (as opposed to a PF disguised as a center) at 7-1, 255. Check.
He’s young. Check.
Can he play defense? We don’t know. He’s only played in 5 NBA games, and got 1.7 blocks per 36. Jury out.
He would definitely be third-string behind Drummond. Ideally, we’d get a guy decent enough to be our backup and then Drum would be our backup backup. *That* would be exciting. (Also quite unlikely.)
Would I be more excited about him than Wiseman? Emphatic yes.
But this is confusing (dated today on BBRef):
“After waiving him from his two-way contract in August, the Pelicans have officially re-signed center Hunter Dickinson, the team announced in a press release. It’s a non-guaranteed training camp deal.”
Is he available or not?
Okay, late Friday afternoon hot takes. Two of them.
I’m out on Dadiet. I just don’t think he has it. Sure he’s young, but I really do see Kevin Knox, as in a big forehead and little behind it. As much as we shit on Kevin, he did start 57 games for us in his rookie year (good lord…). Dadiet seems like a good kid and has a great smile, but that’s not worth much on the court.
And I am holding the Andre Sceptre on Drummond Island. I think he’s just what the doctor ordered. I loved me some Mitch, but Andre is actually better at a lot of things. He can shoot shots that aren’t only ones where his hands are above the rim. He can pass (four assists in 15 minutes last night). He can set damaging screens with that big ass. And he can move with the ball (watching that cut to the basket for the layup was like taking the first sip of a super-cold martini). Sure he doesn’t destroy opponents’ offensive sets like Mitch used to just with the fear factor, but Andre’s looked adequate on D, and was sprinting back on defense as fast as anyone else out there.
Yeah, he’s got miles on his engine, but he seems super-motivated. And honestly he’s younger than Rudy Gobert….
Embiid looks super thin.
FYI guys MSG is airing a one hour show called Knicks in Five: The Dream Season. I haven’t watched yet but it’s on constantly so set your DVRs.
Wemby just dribbled full court, tossed the ball off the backboard to himself so he could dunk it. Very impressive.
I’m wondering why the Kings scheduled their last preseason game, the one where you tune up the starting line up, against the Spurs in San Antonio. They are getting crunched.
Embiid seemed a little less cooked in this game, but still looked turrible slow on defense and the Sixers were playing mostly their starters against Boston’s scrubs.
Clearly he can’t go at full speed at all times, and is going to have to pick and choose his spots. Seems less than ideal once the playoffs roll around.
I agree that it’s an open question as to whether Embiid will be able to both ramp it up and sustain a higher level without breaking down, but this is only preseason and I would think it will take some time for Embiid (and all the Sixers) to figure it out. Embiid of all people should not be going balls out right now. That said, he did have 27 points on 13 shots and played 29 minutes.
I wouldn’t expect them to gel for at least 20 games or so. But they have enough scorers to carry them even with a subpar Embiid. But their backup C situation is a bigger problem than ours, so if Embiid is truly compromised, they are in big trouble.
