I rushed home after dinner last night to be in front of the TV by 11:30.
Turned on Peacock, which I still have access to thanks to that Gen Z girl I dated a year ago who made me watch Love Island with her.
Only to find out the King of New York is hosting next Saturday. [Face Palm Emoji]
Since the championship run, I’ve been taking a deep dive into Knicks history, most importantly, listening to When the Garden Was Eden. I guess I’m feeling like I can’t fully appreciate this glorious afterglow without refreshing my memory regarding all the ups and downs of being a Knicks fan for the last 60 years. The fact that so many avenues to reminisce are available to us now, especially with youtube videos galore, makes doing so at this point in time a labor of love without any of the pre-championship residual pain or regret.
Here’s an example of one of the very highest peaks in the journey: The Bernare King masterpiece in Game 6 at MSG against the peak Larry Bird Celtics. He was probably the closest thing to Brunson in terms of being utterly unstoppable on offense, his success only limited by the team around him. If only Bernard had not blown out his knee and had a better supporting cast, our drought would have ended long ago.
Interesting to compare Bernard with Brunson. Both became unstoppable in a way no other Knick was in need of points, perhaps equalled by Ewing but only on occasion. Melo never came close. But I think the comparison stops there. Bernard did the ultimate FU to us (understandable but still) while Brunson did the ultimate opposite. Only one cared about improving the team.
I don’t ever recall feeling betrayed by Bernard, just bummed that he clearly was never the same and the dream of a Bernard-Patrick pairing was an illusion. I know he became an all-star with Washington and all that, but he wasn’t close to the same player.
How do you figure?
I was always thought we did the ultimate FU to him, and I still hate Rick Pitino for it.
Didn’t train with the team. Big thing then
It really wasn’t. I was a season ticket holder and obviously bleed orange and blue and I never once cared where he trained, nor do I remember the team making a big deal about it.
ACL+ surgery was still pretty primitive then and Bernard’s injury was very complex. It always felt like his isolation was due to him being 100% locked in on making a full recovery without any distractions.
Good points on Bernie (King), just remember his being missing not being great for morale and a theme in the press as it existed in those days… tho key takeaway here is that Hubie and Z-man might agree on something…
Thanks for clarifying. I thought you were referring to his decision to sign the offer sheet with Washington.
The training thing was a real controversy, but it’s worth considering he might have been right (for reasons Z-Man stated).
Geno Smith is looking really good, just managing the game. He’s got some weapons and a decent offensive line.
Maybe I’ll pay attention to football season after all…
happy also to have a full slate of sunday nfl games 😊
kind of a weird question z-man: do you think the nfl has the best televised sports production (studio, cameras, announcers, stuff like that)?
or, do you think some other sport(s) do it better?
Well the Jets broadcast has been all messed up, especially the audio, they had the Minny-Saints audio on for like 5 minutes.
Wow huge 4th and 1 gamble by Jets fails and could cost the game.
I liked the gamble and hated the play.
This has been one long, ugly game.
for some reason, more so than basketball, nfl announcers seem to add more to the broadcast…
I prefer now watching alternate broadcasts of the nba announcerless…hopefully at some point they add floor level camera work and actually mic the court to pick up – everything…
right now the only announcerless broadcast is an overhead view of the court…not great…
also, the camera work seems “better” in the nfl…
Well I can now confirm that the Jets continuing to suck (their drought is longer than the Knicks was!) doesn’t hurt nearly as much as it did pre-Knicks championship.
It’s easier to announce NFL than other sports because there’s a break between every play so (good) announcers can talk about what happened on the previous play, and show a replay, and talk about strategy for the next play. Most other sports don’t have those breaks so they’re very few opportunities to talk about plays and strategy.
ah, very good vincoug…thus the more appealing recent us open coverage…
they’re not talking over the action…
mma announcers can over do it a bunch like the nba folks…
baseball is pretty hit or miss when it comes to folks talking over the gameplay itself…
might see what’s available to be able to listen to monica and tyler during our non clyde broadcasts…
