Reading up and watching highlights of Eubanks, Konchabar and Brown has me kind of excited for these camp invites. Leon definitely did a good job of bringing in some vets that have decent floors. Dare I say it Eubanks and Drummond (if he’s in shape), could be a higher floor than Mitch and Huk (not better but a higher floor).

I like the idea of Dadiet being traded or let go so we can give roster spots to 2 of these guys then give Wiseman and Nickels the 2 way spots.

After how Dadiet looked in summer league, we will absolutely have to pay to unload his contract to whoever still has cap space or a trade exception. What is the most number of seconds — and/or what is the best of our collection of seconds — you’d be willing to attach to him to make room for more than one of these training camp invite guys? Because if we don’t move him or Deuce (or I think Kolek), we can’t afford to sign more than one vet. If we move Dadiet, not only can we sign two vets, but we’d be able to sign a third later in the season after salaries get pro-rated.

    2 things regarding Mitch
-I remember there was a small contingent (including me) that wanted to trade Mitch and our 8 pick to move up in the draft and snag Wiseman.
-When Mitch broke his pinky by hitting his truck, it was because his younger brother was in a severe car accident. And yesterday he gets hit by a car.

Was watching some of my buffalo friends be exultant on my instagram feed, and it got me wondering who is the spiritual successor to the Knicks as the team that would bring the most joy by winning a title now that Cubs fans, Knicks fans, and Sox fans have all been satiated.

Size matters. “Most joy” implies that a bigger city would bring more joy just by virtue of having more people. That works against buffalo. But I think they’d have America behind them.

Fan quality matters, too. This automatically disqualifies the Sixers. Do they even have fans? TBD.

A key component here is bandwagon factor. Would the whole country get behind the team like they did for the Knicks?

And I’m disqualifying hockey. Because the obvious answer is “any Canadian team that wins the Stanley Cup.”

Beyond that I’ve given it zero thought. The Bills were my first guess and I figured I’d post it here if anyone was interested in adding their two cents.

Interestingly, their opponent last night (the Lions) would seem to qualify, but Detroit is a weird case. Maybe it’s just me but I feel like their fans lack an identity.

I unfortunately know many Sixers fans, Hubert, whom I love outside of their fandom for that stupid team.

I think the Bills are probably the overall pick if we’re not counting hockey. The question is, now that we’ve gotten off the schneid, what NBA team winning a championship would be the most life-affirming for a long-suffering fanbase? The Kings?

After how Dadiet looked in summer league, we will absolutely have to pay to unload his contract to whoever still has cap space or a trade exception.

That’s kind of sad. I’ve held out hope for Pacome but it seems like I shouldn’t.

It shouldn’t cost a lot to dump one year of a 21 year old player on a dirt cheap contract. We have Boston’s 2nd in 2028, protected 31-45. That’s the most I’d give up.

Dadiet right now is a poor man’s Knox.
He needs a special guru on him to become a player.
I like Wiseman’s game but he seems fragile and probably needs the full attention of our medical stuff which is quite experienced on that kind of stuff thankfully…

    The Kings?

That’s a great call. They have outstanding fans, and karma owes them for the 2002 WCF.

The country wouldn’t be captivated like it was for the Knicks but die hard NBA fans would.

The question is, now that we’ve gotten off the schneid, what NBA team winning a championship would be the most life-affirming for a long-suffering fanbase? The Kings?

The Sonics, if they’re granted one of the new teams.

    2

The Sonics, if they’re granted one of the new teams.

You may be objectively right, but…

I still remember Seattle fans chanting Donnie Strikeout in Don Mattingly’s last game and I happen to think losing the Sonics was a fair consequence.

re: Dadiet, there was some talk that, similar to Deuce, that he’s making an elite percentage of shots during srimages and in drills that is till to translate in G League or garbage time minutes.

Deuce was the master of treating garbage time minutes like a playoff game and Thibs rewarded him for it.

I would like to give him anotehr 20-30 G League games before moving on.

The Knicks again. New York is that much bigger than every other American city and basketball fans are less split here than football and baseball.

    1

The Jets or the Mets? I know they are both NYC teams and are teams that have split loyalties because of the Giants and Yankees. But Jets haven’t won a superbowl since the 60’s, so it would be a big deal. Mets draught is only 40 years at this point but that would be pretty big deal if they won.

I can’t think of any other major franchise from one of the big three that hasn’t already ended their draught (like the cubs or red sox). Maybe the white sox winning it all?

    1

I also think The Bulls winning a title for the first time since Jordan would be a pretty big deal.

I get the US parameters for this discussion, but only the Toronto Maple Leafs can match the Knicks effect. Toronto is to hockey what NY is to basketball and the Leafs’ mismanagement and close calls mirrors our own. Their drought is almost 60 years and the fans in the suburbs surrounding Toronto live and die with their team like we do.

Just in: Utah Jazz guard Keyonte George has agreed on a five-year, $157.5 million rookie-scale contract extension with the franchise

Think an additional factor getting America behind a team is the like-ability or more accurately relate-ability of the players. With KD and Kyrie we would have been the villains in every playoff round.

That said, Bills by far if we are talking the next few years. Josh Allen–raised on a California farm, college in Wyoming, NFL career in Buffalo–clutch performer with a history of heartbreaks–fits the bill (pun intended).

My Rod Serling book is coming out on October 13. Doing some local events that week. If anyone might be around midtown on the late afternoon of 10/15, I’ll be doing something at The Paley Center: https://www.paleycenter.org/events/conversations-with-curator/rod-serling-with-alan-sepinwall

And I forget how many of you are fellow Jerseyans, but on night of the 14th, I’ll be at Words bookstore in Maplewood: https://wordsbookstore.com/events/6245420261014

Would love to meet some of you guys in person other than Frank, whom I had to meet under less-than-ideal circumstances.

Luck is involved in almost every championship, which also includes the opponents placed in your path. As others have said, I doubt we beat a healthy Thunder team in 5. But we also unlocked a beautiful, beautiful goddamn style of basketball, which lasted even after opponents began to solve the Point KAT thing. (Remember that play where the team put Wemby in the blender with pass after pass after pass until Mikal got an open corner 3?)

The odds are against us repeating simply because the odds are against any one team winning the title, because the league has instituted rules meant to discourage repeat champs (hence, Mitch to Boston), we probably won’t be as healthy next year, etc.

But we were only lucky in the same way that every champ other than ones with Bill Russell or Michael Jordan on them were.

    1

they also put together a power ranking average for the next 3 seasons…

they have us ranked 5th…okc and spurs are listed 1st and 2nd…

surprisingly – at least to me – they have boston slotted in 3rd…

I really don’t get that, I understand they overperformed (record wise) last season, just don’t see it happening again…and again, and again…

think that us, cavs, pistons and philly all have better rosters than them…

we shall see…yeah, i’d bet against the celts reaching that 51.5 win total this season…

The Knicks again. New York is that much bigger than every other American city and basketball fans are less split here than football and baseball.

    Great point!

I was listening to Lowe’s pod about everyone’s favorite champs of the century and it had me thinking something kinda crazy…

Almost every team that won a title went through hell along the way. Crazy 7 game series like ‘19 Raptors vs Philly or the ‘21 Bucks vs Brooklyn… even the ‘25 had two hellacious 7 game wars against Denver and Indiana…

Our title, on the other hand, was easy AF. Which made me think… what if it was so easy that it doesn’t even count as the title these guys can win?

To be clear… I’m not saying our title doesn’t count. I’m saying maybe it doesn’t count as the only one these guys have in them. And maybe the fact that it was so easy balances out the difficulty of repeating.

    Just a thought…

going in to the season, feel like our team (front office/med staff all the way to end of bench) is positioned to be competing in the conference finals again next season (that would be 3 years running)…

just think we have the folks to solve most other team’s competitive riddles…

I originally wrote the maple leafs but changed it bc I think Canada’s drought overshadows theirs now. It’s been 33 years and they have 7 teams. If the Winnipeg Jets won that whole country would be like NYC in June. But yeah, the leafs are the team most like Knicks.

If we do repeat (or win one next season), it definitely will be much harder. I can’t see us breezing through to the chip with no series going more than 6 games and 2 sweeps.

It is kind of weird, though, that in the entire Jalen Brunson era we’ve only ever had one 7 game series, that we lost against The Pacers. And we probably win that one in 5 or 6 if we were actually healthy that year.

And no series wins that went more than 6 games.

    0

When you’re beating the crud out of your opponents most of the time, you need a lot less luck.

The Knicks played 7 games this year in the playoffs that were decided by 10 points or less. They went 4-3 in those games. Of course they were 12-0 in games decided by 10 points or more. They were in every single game, and with a little bit better luck, could have gone 16-0. There was not one game in the entire run where they got handily outplayed, and there were many games where they simply demolished their opponents.

    2

basically, saying it seems like we were extra lucky in terms of health and 3 point shooting defense…

2 key factors that could derail our championship defense…

I get that. But this is what I was theorizing about above.

We didn’t need that luck to win a title.

We needed it to win the most lopsided title in league history.

Take that luck away, we probably still win. Maybe we beat Philly in 6, Cleveland in 7, and the Spurs in 6.

It’s not like we were the Indiana pacers in 2025, who had the same shooting luck and a meager 2.0 net rating. Our margin was extraordinary, and I think it suggests we can win one without great luck, too.

    Or what JK said.

The presence of luck doesn’t make luck the cause, and I think these analysts are being a little lazy: “we spotted traces of luck! Therefore we can move on.”

I think we were actually way more lucky in 2025. That team made the conference finals with a net rating of zero, and they played like three good games the whole playoffs.

All that luck didn’t seem to hurt us this year.

For me, luck plays a huge part of the post season, but confined to injury availability. We got lucky not because other than a pinky we were healthy.

    What’s the famous quote?

    Luck is preparation meeting opportunity.

Cliched but it is very true. If you have good luck but you aren’t prepared to take advantage of it, you won’t benefit from it.

I thought that ESPN analysis of our prospects this season was pretty reasonable though,

Yeah, the ESPN article is perfectly fine. But unless you’re the 95-96 Bulls, and there’s no one on the planet who can stop your best guy, luck is always going to play a role. It’s important to note that.

Also, Brunson may have entered a Jordan-like space on offense. Even if you can keep him down for a while, he will eventually solve you and kick your ass. And so long as the team around him isn’t ravaged with injury…

Also, Brunson may have entered a Jordan-like space on offense. Even if you can keep him down for a while, he will eventually solve you and kick your ass.

Facts. Indiana with Thibs help was the only team that solved Brunson. Leon put in Brown and traded for Jose…full court ball pressure non stop fouling and harrasment problem solved.

    Shams:

Just in: Detroit Pistons All-Defensive forward Ausar Thompson has reached agreement on a five-year, $155 million rookie-scale contract extension, sources tell ESPN.

Everyone insisted that Detroit would wait to resolve the Duren thing before extending Ausar. The fact that they extended Ausar first suggests things ain’t great with Duren’s camp.

the jalen duren thing is weird…

People often talk about how some free agent or prospect “earned millions” by raising their perceived value playing their ass off through a series.

Which leads me to wonder — exactly how many tens of millions of dollars did Jalen Duren LOSE during the eight seconds you see below?
