Brunson’s Emmy cameo: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/fUNWDOluFKM
Maybe Leon wants to wait until after September 26 to make moves because he doesn’t want to upstage Brunson on SNL…
“I don’t have anyone to tap it in for me” is a banger.
Alan, is it just me, or is Widow’s Bay just a solid B show, but there just wasn’t anything better this year?
Yeah that was a fun opener for the Emmy’s.
I’ll be curious to see how his SNL hosting goes though. I’m betting they’ll pack that episode with surprise appearances.
I love Widow’s Bay. But I think the Emmy’s do tend to go a little crazy with a new show. Like a few years ago it would have been Hacks winning everything and last year it was The Pitt. But then shows, even if they remain just as good or even get better, kind of fall out of favor with the voters and whatever is new sweeps.
But I think Widow’s Bay deserves all the accolades. It’s one of the more unique shows to come out recently. The Sunset Cocktails episode and Mike Meyersesque episode were amazing.
OG has to do some kind of skit where he deadpans everything.
I went to a Mets game by a friend in a Corporate box. Can I say how bad it was? The drinks were Heineken, Coors Light, and a bottle of white wine. It was even worse because they had cups marked “Rocks” and lemons/limes but no liquor.
And then the game – why don’t Met fans stand & cheer when their pitcher has 2 strikes on a batter? Don’t they want to encourage a strikeout? No one screaming funny things at players or umps. They did cheer for Alonso.
Why do Mets game need so much between-inning shenanigans? Breakdancers on the dugout. A “race” between the boroughs, but the Bronx never wins! (petty!) Seemingly during every AB there is a 5 second sound clip after every pitch. A firework going off during the national anthem.
Am I just old, or do they do this at all baseball games now, even at The Stadium? I felt like I was the only one who put their phone down when action started. Do fans not interact because they’re all looking at their phones making micro-bets on Draft Kings?
I’m no Alan, but I watched the first episode of Widow’s Bay on the plane last week and… no second episode for me.
Then I watched the first episode of The Chair Company, which, also… no second episode for me (however, I will say this, my re-telling of the episode in treatment form to my friend had us laughing a lot, and when she said “so it was funny?”, I said, “no”, because it really wasn’t funny, it was just funny when I told the same story because I understood the material better I guess)
Then I watched an episode of The Studio, and it made me laugh, so I watched a few more episodes of that and enjoyed them. It’s certainly not great, but Morgan from Mindy Project can’t not be funny, and Catherine O’Hara was a master, and Catherine Hahn always has her moments, so though it was superficial and lacked even a modicum of character development, I’d give it the Plane Ride Emmy. (Even though I don’t understand why Tim Robbins didn’t play Griffin Mill, duh!)
did you just have a birthday or something mike k….sounding old bro…
watch out, the future happens fast…
woke up in a stadium full of pod people, all their bodies had been snatched up by aliens, and replaced with…with whatever it is we’ve become…
truth you can’t go sit anywhere amongst folks and not notice almost three quarters of them have their face planted in a phone…
at least we’ll make great pets…
Like many good things, Geo, the phone connectivity has its advantages, but it’s difficult to moderate use so that it doesn’t become a scourge. I can say I was grateful for that connectivity when I was far away during our run, and not only could I watch but also feel part of this community. But I also reach for the phone the second I begin to feel bored or distracted, and that’s a concern. I’m not reading as much as I used to; I doubt I’m thinking as much as I used to. (But since a lot of that was solipsistic ramblings, maybe that’s not such a problem …)
Dunno, man, seems like we’re doomed to destroy ourselves because we simply lack the will to moderate, well, everything. Just keep pressing that dopamine button, whatever it may be…
I’m with Donnie on Widow’s Bay. It was very similar to (and only a little bit better than Good Medicine, which…….wasn’t good at all.
well now rama, after some extensive research on tic toc and instagram – it seems that we are in the midst of a (relatively) rapid transitional phase for humans…
good news is – we are only about 5 billion or so over our optimal human habitation level…
very soon our phones will be swarm controlled and will let us know it’s time in most areas of the world to stop having kids, stop bunching up in cities along the coastlines…
we’ll probably even get shifted away from living in places where there’s hardly any food or water…imagine that…
hard to imagine our development not being by design…
I like the breakdancers on the dugout. The last game I was at the players faces on the big screen were drawn by kids which made e feel like I was candy flipping.
They do it everywhere, including Knicks games. Thundersticks, T-shirt cannons, excessively loud music, noise meters, people running around in fat suits. It’s like someone got in their head that people will go home if they experience 10 seconds of silence and made sure it never happened again, and every stadium/arena followed suit.
The worst was when I went to a Staten Island Yankees game. They had an emcee talking though the whole game
Widow’s Bay was delightful.
Awards shows are dumb.
I’m seriously considering buying a brick for my iphone so I can block it and turn it into a dumb phone. I don’t think I could ever go back to having just a dumb cell phone because there are a lot of very useful things I like about it. Duo Lingo has changed my life. I enjoy being able to watch videos on it, text with people, etc. But I do get sucked into doom scrolling or just mindlessly looking at it and it has destroyed by attention span and ability to just sit and do nothing.
So I’m gonna try this brick thing and see how it works. I’ve put getting my attention and focus back as my number one priority, even over exercise because I think the affects it has on your brain long term are very damaging and we’re only just starting to see the consequences of this.
Donnie: Please give The Chair Company a chance. I think you’ll really like where the absurdist humor takes you.
I lack Alan’s expertise , but the appeal of Widow’s Bay was its ability to balance horror and comedy. Certainly not in the pantheon of great TV. Matthew Rhys was very good as a very off kilter male mayor. His character would fit in wonderfully on KB.
Re- Phones, I am fortunate that my eyesight is so poor that I only use my phone for calls and dictating texts and emails. What bothers me most about phones at sporting events is the users videoing the action as if they’re Gordon Willis ( or ok, Ben Stiller doing an HBO Max documentary). My neighborhood has been inundated with Gen Zers, who have invaded my running paths and routinely stop to video the sun in the sky. Sheesh.
Update us in a month, Swifty! (If you’re still alive)
We quite enjoyed Widow’s Bay, that show goes down easily. I have a friend group that’s made up of actor/musician/writer type folks, and I hung out with them a few months ago and they were all gushing about the show, which made me think that it was gonna run the table at the Emmys, which it basically did.
I am completely obsessed with this Nathan Fielder/Elizabeth Holmes movie that’s coming out next month, that looks like that is going to be completely bonkers.
Yeah, the power of that clip is undeniable
Zach Lowe’s pod did a question for every east team and the Knicks’ was “how much will Mitch’s absence be felt” and they went through a litany of stats and anecdotes about how impactful he was and it made me mad all over again. Fucking Dolan.
This was exactly my experience when I started taking my nephews to Yankees games over the last couple of years. Endless noise. Baseball distilled down to pure brainrot. It was intolerable.
Luckily, it seems enough Yankees fans and STHs complained and they have toned it WAAAAAY down, much closer to the natural gameday vibes I’m accustomed to.
Who, me?
The fact Mitch is limited but really good seems so hard for people to swallow/remember
I don’t get it.

same. also looking forward to the sequel when they swap roles.
ugh, used to be endlessly reading, then it was video games, now reading digital micro font on a poorly lit crackphone in my hands…
they may not all be too bad…some folks some where were at least wise enough to nominate Spartacus: Blood and Sand (season 1) for 3 golden nymphs…so there must be folks with good taste at some place some where…
Owen, yesterday your comment about Gallo made me spend some time checking his social networks. What a great guy he is. Sometimes i wonder what could have been if Melo didn’t come to NY.
saw mike conley next to paul george at a celtic new player presser…
conley’s been cooked for a while now…
Our “last shot” defensive lineup was probably the best in the NBA.
Run that last play in game 4 again and KAT probably can’t guard the inbounds bc he needs to be in Mitch’s spot.
Fucking Dolan.
IMO he was good enough to be a key starter on a championship team. It’s unfortunatel he never reached his full potential because of repeated serious injuries.
I loved his game, think his impact was underrated and imo it was a huge mistake to trade him and other assets for Melo (and I’ve mellowed on Melo since back in the day).
We aren’t going to replace his defensive impact at C so we are going to have to find other ways to be better. If Drummond focuses on rebounding we should be OK in that area.
I’ll watch the podcast tonight.
The comedies these days is that they aren’t actually comedies. For example, Widow’s bay is not something to be laughed at.
I agree NJ. WB is basically in the same category as Lost to me, but with a couple more one-liners… so it’s a comedy?
I mean, it was an enjoyable enough show, but if that’s the funniest show on tv, I’m going to stick to Instagram series’.
Also, Liam Robbins signed his Exhibit-10 today. You can finally exhale, Doogie.
Next month.
I’m doing a magic show in the city for my birthday, if y’all want to celebrate. I’ll be happy to share a discount code if that sweetens the deal.
NEWS! KNICKS NEWS!
I expect this during basketball games. A time-out is called & they have something going on. Tshirt cannons, a quick change magician, trivia.
However, baseball wasn’t this way. You get the third out. The organ plays. Something on the screen like a trivia question or historical take or a birthday.
But baseball was never the constant barrage of basketball of sensory overload.
what an absolutely awesome way to celebrate…
happy early staying alive day…do you ever record your performances?
Well, we technically did a thing:
What you don’t think Drummond can chase someone around the court & shut them down?
It’s my favorite venue. I do record them, but not for public consumption. More for improving myself, and/or seeing what tricks/jokes landed.
Konchar was something of a cause célèbre among Memphis fans for a while, and his numbers aren’t bad. You could definitely do worse with your 14th roster spot.
That said, the fit is pretty weird given that we’re flush with guards and wings while desperately relying on Andre Drummond for big guy stuff.
Okay, we have a roster, sort of…
I will attend any and all Mike K magic shows. TNFH-GF is also known to be a big magic show fan.
It has to be a non-guaranteed deal for Konchar, right?
It’s possible that the plan is to deal from our wing/guard depth during the preseason, and Konchar is coming in to replace whoever gets traded for a big man?
Drummond lost a footrace to a fire hydrant recently
The Nuggets were better than us after the Gallo trade. I said ir at the time, I still say if. Gallo was no worse than Melo and I think better at that stage.
He should be a first ballot Hall of Very Good guy
Diawara has a greater standing reach, wingspan and athleticism than KAT so he can easily pressure the inbounds as well or better than KAT if that is what you are worried about.
“Jitty” is Konchar’s nickname, apparently.
Yeah Konchar makes me think Deuce is not long for this world…
Drew Eubanks aka Drubanks gets a training camp contract.
Konchar is an interesting deep bench type. He’s got over 6000 NBA minutes under his belt and a positive career BPM. The 3-point stroke looks solid but he doesn’t make enough of them. Still has a career 100 TS+. Racks up some steals, very good rebounder for his size, doesn’t turn it over, gets some assists. Seems like a 3&D plugger who can maybe eat minutes reasonably effectively if there’s a spate of injuries, but hopefully we never have to count on him. Maybe he’s going to take Pacome’s spot if we need to dump his salary to squeeze some more juice out of the cap.
I’m guessing that playing on a team with Jalen Brunson instead of Ja Morant will be a positive for him.
I like the Eubanks signing as well. Unless a young guy with immediate upside comes along, a non-washed journeyman vet is fine. At least it would buy time.
One thing about Konchar is that he had a couple of triple-doubles with Utah towards the end of their tank. At least it would suggest that he’s a pretty good passer. Also, to me, the name (pronounced Con-Char) seems European at first glance, but he is a born-and-raised midwesterner all through college.
We already know that the Knicks can’t put both Eubanks and Konchar on the roster as things stand right now. So either:
1)The team will let the better guy in camp win a roster spot, and if it’s Konchar, they’ll worry about the big man depth down the road; or
2)They fully intend to trade a guard or wing (either Deuce for a real return, Kolek as a challenge trade, or Dadiet as a salary dump) and sign both guys.
All of those are possibilities, Alan. The good news is that both have a floor of legit NBA deep-bench players. But it sure smells like something is brewing involving Deuce, Dadiet, and/or Kolek. I love Deuce and like Kolek so would hate to see them go in a vacuum. Less than ambivalent about Dadiet.
My guess is that Konchar stays no matter what, whlle Eubanks is a placeholder for now.
Deuce’s situation reminds me too much of IQ’s before he was traded. The team had a need, there were redundancies with him, and he wouldn’t settle for a below-market extension, so he was gone in the OG deal, possibly instead of significant draft capital. Similarly, Deuce is a great, lovable guy and really good piece, but this is his time to get paid, even if not as much as IQ, and we have a need at C and redundancies at Deuce’s position.
If I understand correctly we signed a center, two guards and three forwards to exhibit ten contracts, signed a center (Eubanks) and a small forward (Konchar) to one year deals of some unspecified sort. Conspicuously absent is Tyler Nickel. Do we still have room to sign him on a low cost rookie deal? He should at least get some sort of shot in trading camp.
I actually think Houston needs an actual point guard in case Vsn Vleet doesn’t do well in his comeback. I thought they should have traded for Kolek last year, but they may not need him as much now.
League raised next year’s projected cap number by a couple million, which should help the Deuce situation quite a bit. Still need someone to take a paycut.
From the Athletic:
Kudos to Ian Begley for being all over the Konchar and Eubanks interest. He’s not infallible, but he is pretty much as plugged in to the FO as it gets.
I suspect Konchar and Eubanks are both on training camp deals, they just weren’t announced that way. We can’t afford both of them.
If we sign either one, then Nickel can only sign on a two-way deal. We could then convert Nickel later in the season when his pro-rated salary fits.
We only have the salary space for 1 more player. The exception would be Nickel and another 2nd rd draft pick. But there has been no indication that any of our overseas stashes are coming.
If we salary dump Dadiet, we could fit Konchar, Eubanks, and Nickel with enough money left for half a ticket to the Knicks season opener.
Based on the way it was reported, Konchar sounds more like a non-guaranteed minimum deal and Eubanks more like an exhibit 10, but who knows?
I would think that makes sense, as Konchar seemed to be more coveted.
An Exhibit-10 is a non-guaranteed minimum deal, it just also gives a bonus if you sign with Westchester afterwards. Not signing an exhibit-10 would be strictly worse for Konchar. It should be a minimum with a guarantee or an Exhibit 10.
It’s possible he skips it for optics because he’s convinced he’ll get an NBA deal elsewhere or he plans to go overseas for more money, but foregoing an Exhibit-10 just loses him money if nobody signs him to an NBA deal.
At least we will have two centers (Eubanks and Robbin’s), neither of whom is old, competing for the third center spot in training camp.
But don’t many non-guaranteed deals have certain benchmarks where at least some of the money becomes guaranteed, such as Ben Simmons’ deal with the Kings? And can they just be guaranteed? While Exhibit 10 deals need to be converted?
Eubanks would be a standard backup for a mediocre to lousy team. He would be a subpar backup for a contender. I don’t think he’s a threat to displace Drummond in the rotation unless there’s an injury. But theoretically, he might push him.
A) KAT
B) Hart
C) Deuce
D) Dolan
Seems easy to me.
I’m sure I’m missing out on a lot of great shows (like, all of them), but I feel like if a show can’t introduce a compelling theme, tone, story, or characters in 40 minutes that that’s a them problem not a me problem.
Per various reports, all of these guys, except for Liam Robbins, have been immediately waived, ticketed for G-League. Nick Jourdain was also a sign and waive.
This leaves Robbins with, I would say, a clear path to at least a two-way spot. Outside chance for a full spot.
By the way, Igor is not related to Darko.
I’d be pleased if we roster Robbins(on)…….not ecstatic, but definitely pleased. He’s huge, young, defensive-minded…….and if he’s at all coachable, he could be quite useful as our defensive center.
I’m looking forward to finding out.
The New York Knicks have been in contact with free-agent big men James Wiseman and Duop Reath as training camp approaches, according to Ian Begley of SNY.
“Others the Knicks have been in touch with as training camp nears: big men Duop Reath and James Wiseman,” Begley reported.
James Wiseman. There’s a guy with the heart of a lion. An ant lion.
