he won’t do it but someone made the argument that the clippers owner should just say “fuck it” and go crazy over the second apron (if he’s ok just spending money).
Because the league’s penalty has basically taken away all their picks, so besides the money, there’s no real bad reason for them to go into the second apron for a few years, besides I guess the trade restrictions.
But they could take on horrible contracts to get picks back or just say fuck it and create a super team of mercenaries that are way overpaid and blast through the second apron for a few seasons.
He won’t do it but that would be a really funny thing if he did.
The thing is, the Clippers have some picks in the bank, so they aren’t bereft. And there is no better capital right now than cap space. So if they do some savvy GMing, They can have a pretty clean cap sheet in 2028-29 and just take advantages of market inefficiencies and the draft capital that they have. Wagler and Niederhauser are two interesting young pieces. Who knows, maybe they can either get something for Garland and Ingram, or even keep the former if he deserves it.
But yeah, unless there’s a deal involved where Ballmer gets at least something back for not going to court, I’m surprised that he’s going down without much of a whimper.
Yeah, I think the way out of this mess is to take the same asset accumulation route the Nets did after the Garnett/Pierce trade ruined them and turned the Celtics into contenders. And they have an advantage Brooklyn didn’t: everyone’s fear of the second apron means teams will be more willing to unload good players who just make more money than those teams can pay and stay under the apron. Even in transactions where they don’t get a premium pick as a tax for taking on the contract, the Clips will in theory be able to eventually flip these good players to other teams in more favorable tax situations.
They’re in bad shape, don’t get me wrong. But the fact that they set up their cap sheet to be pretty clean when Kawhi’s contract ended gives them a clear path to climb out of the hole.
Damn, don’t think I’ve ever gotten to work and seen only 3 comments before
“Damn, don’t think I’ve ever gotten to work and seen only 3 comments before”
15 days until training camp opens. Tick tock tick tock tick tock…
I spent 15 minutes talking with a doorman I hadn’t seen in three months. I pass his building on my way to work and we always talk Knicks.
It’s still sweet.
I honestly don’t think I need anything else from the Knicks. It’s all gravy.
Lets go!! – I personally need KAT to sign extension in next two weeks. Enough with the good summertime & US Open posh vibes. Talk is cheap.
Some official news about Milicic Jr:
All reports about Knicks signing Milicic to an Exhibit 10 appear to trace to the one report from a Polish source.
that sounds like a pretty decent plan for the clips…pay their way through it…
ha, ballmer got pissed for a minute, saw the feds investigation hit everyone’s feed – and suddenly, got quiet and okay with it all…that should have been the plan a long time ago…hard heads make soft asses…
maybe he didn’t know frank was dumb enough to take notes…most of the nefarious stuff probably has a really clear slimy trail…boobs are probably on video congratulating each another…
that shouldn’t make me laugh and smile so much, but it does…
petty on purpose…i can be better, just choose not to…
kawhi’s cursed by the basketball gods going forward…the raptors should back out now…
nothing good for the raps will come of this…mark it down…
no sponsors have dropped him…and so it goes, to the next bag sir…
I’d like to see KAT and Deuce taken care of before the season starts.
My understanding is that we can offer Deuce up to 3 years/$55M and he’d still be trade eligible. That would put him on a 4 year, $59M deal. For comparison, the full NTMLE is 4 years, $64M.
Seems like a win-win for everyone. Must not be, though, because it hasn’t happened.
Exactly my point, hubert. KAT extension is a prerequisite to Deuce. He gets whatever KAT says he gets.
I can’t get that excited yet for the Knicks until the Yankees season is over which hopefully won’t be until end of October.
Having said that October 20th definitely can’t come soon enough!
You know what I love, guys? Every freaking where I go in the world these days, I’m either wearing a Knicks shirt and have people saying, “Knicks in 5!” to me, or I’m seeing someone else wearing Knicks gear and saying it to them.
Knicks.
In.
5.
That is all.
I walked by a guy in a Brunson shirt today and thought to myself “should I still say Knicks in 5?” and the answer was “of course I should”, and I said it, and he said it back, and we smiled.
Hope “Knicks in Five” greeting phrase lives forever amoung us.
Kawhi trade finally went through.
I have a theory btw….
we all know that a good amount of the knicks fans who turned out for the finals were bandwagon fans who just showed up for the good time.
My theory is that all those people are itching to do it again, and if the Yankees turn up next month then everyone who came out for the Knicks is gonna slide right into fresh new Yankees gear and turn out the same way, making the city more lit than it usually is for baseball.
I miss when it was Knicks in 4.
Blame me!
😀 😀 😀

I just stick with the ol’ “Let’s Go Knicks!”
I live in Omaha, NE these days, so not a lot of Knicks fans here. Not a lot of NBA fans in general.
But what is cool is I rock my gear a lot and these last few months, a lot of younger people like college or even high school will stop me and be like “Knicks in 5!” which makes me happy. Young people can bandwagon all they want. This team has created a whole new generation of Knicks fans and I AM HERE FOR IT.
Kawhi was really good last year.
Toronto scares me a lot more than Philadelphia. Maybe more than any team in the East actually.
Yeah if Kawhi is motivated and pissed off because of all of this and IQ is healthy, they could be a sneaky good team next year.
I’m hoping they extend him right away. That seems to dilute his motivation.
I was riding my bike one day and some youngsters were blocking my path and I was getting a little annoyed. However they graciously moved out of the way and apologized.
And as I went by and they saw my Knicks shirt, they yelled “Let’s Go Knicks” and like a true addle-brained boomer I answered “You too!” (-:
Meanwhile, KAT and Mrs. KAT are currently curating an October Sotheby’s auction. Hope that works out for them.
Inspired by today’s talk I wore my blue Mitch 23 jersey tonight out in NYC on way to gym. Incidentally I bought while having drinks with Rama during the Landry Shamet game. Gotten three “Knicks in 5” shouts already
Brunson was in the opening number of the Emmys with his BFF Mariska Hargitay.
It occurs to me that if the Clips go the route of ignoring the second apron by trading for overpaid players plus picks, they will pay much more in luxury tax money then their $30M fine. The tax money would go to the other owners too, which would be kind of fair.
This strategy may be easier said than done because once you get over the aprons trade restrictions make it hard to acquire high priced players. The teams I remember going over the second aprons did it by resigning their own players.
OK, now I’m worried
Toronto is also my biggest concern in the East. They have strong two-way players 1-5, save RJ on defense, and all 5 guys are plus passers.
They were the 11th best team in net rating last season, and the gap between Kawhi and Ingram is enormous.
The one question for Toronto is spacing. RJ, Poeltl, and Barnes are bad shooters.
I don’t think this is really a thing. Like you said, the trade restrictions won’t allow it. Once you get over the first apron you can’t take back a dollar more than you send out.
They would have to re-sign Brook Lopez to a one year, $60M contract, and then use him to take back salary.
I’m guessing that kind of BS would be frowned upon.
I know it’s not a popular opinion round here, but I think IQ is very overrated. Kawhi is a creaky 35 years old, and although he had a great year on paper, he only played 2000 minutes. RJ and Barnes are not all that complementary with Leonard. I’m not all that worried about Toronto. Put differently, I’m WAAAAY more worried about the Sixers, Celts, and Heat, and probably more worried about the Pistons, Cavs and Magic.
Honestly, I’m not that worried about anyone. The only thing I’m worried about is health. And focus early in the year; it could be a bit ugly if players aren’t locked in again and Jalen’s wrist isn’t ready. But assuming fourth seed or higher, we should go to the ECF at least. And then the health of the other teams will matter.
I love that bit with Brunson on the Emmys. Especially because not only did he not sing (thank god), but his only line was “Seriously?”
Pretty funny, though.
