Rewatched the Cavs game one comeback.

The Bridges turnaround three with the shot clock expiring might be one of the craziest made shots of the entire playoff run. That and the KAT fall down three in game four of the finals.

Yeah game one against the cavs was definitely an example of how you need a little luck to win a title. We did an amazing job coming back but bridges shot was insane, Landry had that incredible three that rolled around and bounced in. Mitchell had a three when we were climbing back that rolled out and then the buzzer shot by Cleveland rolled in and out.

We had some lucky breaks in game four against the spurs too but some of the shit that went down in game one against Cleveland was truly miraculous.

That being said, I think even if we had dropped game one we probably lot still beat the Cavs in that series as we were clearly the better team. But if we lost game four and the series is ow tied 2-2, good chance we might not win the finals.

I’m still not used to the respect Brunson gets and how big a star he is. There’s the link above, and also when Ben Shelton won his semifinal match in Arthur Ashe Stadium to make the US Open final, he talked about being in such a situation with Jalen Brunson watching. There were lots of big names watching, but he named Brunson. Actually, I kind of feel bad for Brunson. At the concert in the link he looked he didn’t want to be recognized.

Watching the Brunson narrative this year will be interesting. He was criminally under-rated for years, he’s now going through a period where he’s being ‘rated.’ I suspect the start of the season will bring some over-rated pushback, so we’ll see how he combats that with his play.

On the other hand, I have no concerns about Brunson the person or the basketball player in this regard. He clearly wants to be respected, but he seems to have little interest in being famous, a la A-Rod and others. He doesn’t shy away from public attention, but he doesn’t seem to crave it in a way that some other stars do.

Actually, I kind of feel bad for Brunson.

I think of it from a different angle… all the other NBA players are watching this and every single one of them is going to come at him next year full throttle. It will be very interesting to see how he responds.

I’ll take Brunson over anyone. But everyone vs Brunson all season long is not a fight I want him to be in. The dude’s logged a ton of minutes the last three years — hard ones, too. Even LeBron used to take breaks after carrying those kinds of loads, and he’s the apex human of the league.

We really needed that secondary ballhandler, and I really wish we’d held onto De Larrea instead of Dadiet. We might just have to do a lot more Brunson-Alvarado & Brunson-Kolek lineups in the regular season and live with the consequences. I couldn’t care less if we only win 50 games.

Those two comebacks are still surreal. I was at the Cleveland game and honestly felt better for my friend who provided the ticket and his son because they had witnessed the excruciating horror of Game 1 the prior year. Even when we went into overtime, I was thinking, please don’t subject these guys to another one of those. And the fear was thick, especially when we took a 9-point lead in OT but Strus immediately cut it to 6 with 1:45 left and then OG misses the first of two with 1:19 to go. Then he hits the second and CLE turns it over on two consecutive possessions and we could rejoice.

Is that the greatest Knicks game I’ve ever been to? I’d have to say yes. The only caveat is, I really thought that even if we lost that game, we would win the series, we just needed a game to get it going after a 9-day layoff.

Whereas game 4 vs. the Spurs was definitely the greatest game ever at MSG in terms of drama lasting until the final buzzer. The 1970 wins in games 5 and 7 were dramatic in different ways, but both games were decided earlier, especially game 7, which was a laugher. I don’t think it will be surpassed for a long, long time, because having 53 years of history riding on it put the pressure-dread meter past the red zone, and although it didn’t come in a close-out game, it felt pretty close to being one.

Harry Styles is probably the biggest pop star in the world, and at his concert Saturday at MSG he called out Brunson and literally bowed to him from the stage in a “we’re not worthy” manner

It’s just mind boggling what Brunson has become, the biggest star in NY since Jeter? Or maybe the biggest star ever?

Am not worried about Brunson being targeted. Unlike MJ., LeBron, Kobe etc, he is happy to “disappear” into a role that makes sense when one or another teammate gets it going. His playoff heroics this year were not consistent, but he “reappeared “ when there was a void.

Love Ben Shelton, also love SNL, lukewarm on Harry Styles, but gotta believe LBJ is looking at what a massive mistake the Decision was.

De Larrea would likely be of little use this year, as is the case with most rookies. I think that Alvaraso and Kolek are both going to see ample minutes during the regular season. In fact, I think the entire roster is gonna see lots of minutes. As to. Dadiet, I would be surprised if he is still on the roster by the trade deadline. He’s got salary filler written all over him. But so long as he’s here, I think he will get some non-garbage time minutes as well.

Brunson’s stardom is magnified by many situational factors, especially when compared to guys like the old Yankees (e.g. Ruth, Mantle, DiMaggio, etc.), Giants (Mays), and Dodgers (Robinson), Joe Namath, Clyde and Willis, Reggie, Seaver, and of course, Jeter. But he’s forever in the pantheon, that’s for sure!

It’s just mind boggling what Brunson has become, the biggest star in NY since Jeter? Or maybe the biggest star ever?

No athlete will ever own NYC like Joe Namath did from 1967-70. The end.

I think LeBron’s comfortable with his choices.

    Kevin Durant, though….

    My god what a fool.

I don’t think Brunson ever disappears. He’s the key man in everything. Even when OG and KAT are cooking, Brunson’s doing a lot of work.

Well, there was that fella who inspired the construction of an entire baseball stadium…

I’m curious to see what kind of superstar/champion’s whistle we get this year. Brunson but also KAT and OG. I don’t want us to be given free throws just because but I think we all feel that for years the Knicks haven’t gotten a unfair whistle. Some of that is us being fans and being biased but even these last few years with us being more respectable, it felt like the aura of LOL Knicks still hung above our team and that sometimes led to an unfair whistle against us.

Does that change at all now that we’re champs?

KAT has a terrible whistle but I think he’s earned it and it’s never going to change unless he changes.

I actually thought he got a lot of leeway in the playoffs. The two quick fouls in game 4 were tough but he probably could have fouled out of 7 different games without a long leash.

There’s a lot of things you can get away with. But KAT does the stuff no one gets away with.

Yeah KAT figuring out how not to commit dumb fouls is the final piece in his player development. I thought he was better overall in the playoffs but still had his moments.

Game 1 against the Cavs was the only playoff game I went to this year, and I spent roughly 90% of it or so coping to my uncle next to me about the rust from the time off and the fact that it was okay we spent all that money to see a loss because we still had a great time hanging out.

Then we saw the coolest comeback I’ve ever experienced, a superlative that lasted for all of a few weeks.

    1

Also, KAT gets fouled on virtually every drive, and it’s almost never called. I get that they’re calling fewer touch and whack fouls, which is sort of fine as it would otherwise slow the game horribly, but KAT gets walloped badly an awful lot.

I’m still furious at the refs for letting the Spurs get away with murder. It’s like gambling, don’t fuck up the sport that I love.

    I hope it’s not actually like gambling…

got stuff to do, but – looks like the women are having a tough time with france right now (fiba world cup finals)…

    maybe watch that one later…

KAT gets fouled on virtually every drive, and it’s almost never called

I agree, but I find that consistent. We got away with a lot on Wemby, too.

What I don’t understand is how it’s completely different against Joel Embiid.

I think we are hyperfocused on the Knicks’ players. The reality is that nearly all players who go hard to the basket a lot get fouled a lot, especially the big, strong guys. So I’m not all that sympathetic about it.

His offensive fouls are generally one of two kinds: the hook with his off arm and the illegal screen where he throws his hip out. Both of those are unacceptable and need to be cleaned up.

The Sixers are gonna draw a ton of fouls this year. I wouldn’t be surprised if they lead the NBA in FTA.

The good news is, they will probably commit a bunch of fouls as well.

somethin’ that stood out at the time was how despite there being numerous athletically gifted players on the court throughout the playoffs OG kept seeming like a mis-match against everyone else…

OG isn’t Maxey-level fast, he’s not the most coordinated, and he doesn’t jump the highest. But he’s strong AF, has a relentless motor and genius-level processing, and can go fast enough and jump high enough to wreck entire worlds. We got the mostly-healthy, fully-actualized version of him this past season. 10/10. No notes.

This just came across my feed and I’d never seen it before…

It’s Jaxson Dart & Cam Skatteboo watching OG’s tip at the garden. And it’s extra funny bc they don’t have good seats at all.

To the point earlier… I can’t speak to Joe Namath or Babe Ruth (or Reggie Jackson, who wasn’t mentioned but is up there I think) but Brunson’s status in NY is beyond Jeter or anyone else in my lifetime. Mark Messier is probably #2. Hockey was very significant back in 1994, and he was quite a big deal.

I loathe the Yankees but Jeter is really tough to top as a modern NY sports icon. Even though loyalties are divided in NY baseball, he transcended that. There was very little social media when he was a central figure on a dynastic team, not to mention a matinee idol and a world class guy. Maybe there’s an argument for Brunson, but objectively, I don’t think he’s there yet.

The last time we had a Giants game this fun was the first half of Dart’s first start, and then Nabers got hurt. Before then it was in Obama’s first term.

Clippers are conceding the punishment. No court battle. I assume Kawhi trade goes through in the next day or two. Only question remaining is whether their relatively quick concession will result in them getting a pick or two back, like the Wolves did in the Joe Smith mess.

Sports is fun, but telegenicity still rules the culture. Herb Stempel knew the average rainfall of the Amazon basin, but the network wanted him to lose regardless. Sorry, Brun, ur days are numbered.
