Good use of A.I.: I found a prompt that helped me find a 90’s Nike Commercial featuring Charles Oakley. It had eluded me for a long time.

I watched some film of Wiseman just to see if there was a glimmer of hope that he could amount to something. Some significant flaws jumped out at me. First, he has terrible footwork, always looking off-balance and easy to dislodge or force into turnovers. Second, he has no base, which combined with his lack of lateral footwork and balance, makes him easy to block out and blow by. Third, his skills on both ends don’t seem like they will translate due to a slow processing speed in traffic, combined with an average-at-best motor in the halfcourt.
On the positive side, he does have some straight-line speed for running the floor, and length as a potential rim-protector. But he presents more like a raw rookie…maybe more raw than rookie Huk, and at 25, that’s probably not fixable. I truly can’t imagine that he will be more useful than someone like Eubanks this year, let alone other guys Leon has on his radar.
Here’s a decent scouting video that highlights his flaws.
If you have to pick sight unseen between a guy the Warriors and the Pacers gave up on or someone who had season ending injury and whose contract wasn’t renewed by the Kings, I’m expecting more from the latter. That said, Eubanks has been through a lot teams before ending up with the Kings. I’m glad we get to test them out in pre-season.
I similarly looked for a glimmer of hope re: Wiseman and recalled that Marcus Camby was another #2 pick who played whose game really clicked at 25, when he came to the Knicks, during the ’99 playoffs. While this means almost nothing for James Wiseman, the fact that it wouldn’t be entirely un-precendented made me a tad more optimistic.
I wasn’t taking the Wiseman flyer very seriously, but Marc Stein reported last night that Mike Brown is a fan from their time together in Golden State.
I’m not deeply invested in our third-center battle because I primarily am hoping we get a (much) better backup, so while I’m Wiseman-skeptical to say the least, there’s an argument for being deferential to Brown here because the opportunity cost is Drew Eubanks et al.
Eubanks & Wiseman both suck, so I don’t think it’s a big deal either way. But Wiseman really, really sucks. Hope he’s had a come to Jesus moment about his place in the league and starts grinding.
That’s funny Z-Man, I did the same thing. I started with a recent interview where James was saying all the right things, which gave me a glimmer of hope.
But then I watched highlights from the Miami Pro Am he participated in about a month ago and my heart sunk.
It’s a decent group of players like Bones Hyland, Nick Richards, and other fringe guys who were showing off their stuff, but not world-beaters by any means.
First the positives: Wiseman is pretty good in transition. He plays the lanes well, finishes at the rim, and even passes pretty well on the move for a big man.
Unfortunately that was it for the positives.
His defense – both post and perimeter – looked almost nonexistent. He not only looked slow, he also looked disinterested, although I’m sure he’s trying his best to stick with a team. His rebounding instincts also looked pretty bad, with 6’7” guys like the great Keshad Johnson out-rebounding him. On offense, in the halfcourt, he pretty much stood to the side (although to be fair, the game mostly featured guys like bones trying to get theirs off the dribble, so how he would play in a real offense was inconclusive.)
But I don’t have any hope for him on defense, even with old friend Brownie coaching him. I guess we’ll see what happens.
There’s probably nothing in the past that would excite me about Wiseman but he’s an interesting invite and if he earns the last spot on the roster that will be the prevailing data point for me.
I think we have a good culture and if we determine a guy is worth a shot I’ll be bullish on his ability to improve in practice.
One “sort of” worry that one might have about Mike Brown is that he’s just too nice of a guy. I mean this in the sense that he might believe in guys that maybe shouldn’t be believed in. But last year, Brown perma-benched Yabu even though he seemed like a nice person. He also benched Clarkson until he came back with a different defensive mentality.
The question for me is, how much influence, if any at all, does Brown actually have over roster decisions? My feeling is that he should be consulted, but that it should ultimately be a collaborative process, especially when it comes to final cuts. It seems like that’s how it played out last year during the preseason, but who knows?
The report that Brown “likes” Wiseman doesn’t really bother me, because as TNFH pointed out, the most pressing issue is with our backup, not our 3rd stringer. Ultimately, I would hope that Leon and Brown are in full agreement when it comes to making the final call, that it is based on a rigorous and logical process, and that Leon will continue to scour the earth for a better option before the trade deadline. Whatever, the chance of injury to either KAT or Drummond is real enough to want that 3rd C role to be filled by someone who can play 20mpg without killing the team.
In that regard, Eubanks seems far more ready for that task, but he should have to show that in preseason to beat out Wiseman, who has theoretical upside while Eubanks’ ceiling is pretty obviously low.
Every now and then I get irrationally excited about Andre Drummond btw.
It’s funny, the other day BBA characterized the Mitch thing as “some folks who are really mad about it vs some folks who think we’ll be fine.” I’m actually really mad about it and I think we’ll be fine! We won’t be as good, but Drummond won’t kill us, either.
You gotta admit the whole “Drummond suddenly shoots threes” thing is kinda crazy.
He was 18 for 140 (12%) entering last season, and he’d been a notoriously terrible free throw shooter.
Then last year he went 32-90 (35.6%). He’s still a 63% FT shooter. But he used to be 35-40%.
All signs point to his league average rate being some variance luck on a small sample. But this guy’s on a one year minimum deal with a clear path to doubling his income next summer. Who’s to say he didn’t spend all summer working on making that improvement stick?
Also Rich Paul said “don’t sleep on Andre Drummond, he’s gonna be better than you think” to Max Kellerman when he was moaning about losing Mitch. And I like Rich Paul. So I’m bullish.
Z-man, I read the Brown “likes” Wiseman report completely differently albeit purely speculation. Wiseman had a weird college experience, gets drafted at 2 during COVID to a win-now contender, with Draymond as your would-be mentor. Not ideal for almost all young prospects . Brown was there and perhaps thought he got a raw deal at GS and he and Leon agreed to give him another shot at no cost. Meaning that Brown and Leon do collaborate…
I’m in the camp of those who feel “resigned” as oposed to “mad” about the Dolan-Mitch thing, and am “somewhat relieved” but hardly “excited” about Drummond.
But hey, I wasn’t all that excited about hiring Mike Brown, and that worked out pretty well!
I’ll be interested to see how Drummond plays in preseason…and the other C’s as well. To a lesser degree, I’m interested to see how Nickel plays with the real team. He showed some stuff in summer league beyond just the raw shooting that might be transferrable.
I’m also hoping that someone intriguing gets waived prior to the season that is two-way eligible for a potential look-see at the five.
BE, we have more recent data on Wiseman, including a long stint with the Pistons and some time with the Pacers. Now granted, the two Pistons seasons were with utterly horrific teams, and with the Pacers he blew out his achilles early on and probably never had a chance to recover, but he really hasn’t shown any kind of progress. I get that Brown may have liked what he saw when Wiseman was a baby in Golden State, but those days are long gone and the developmental arc is flat. Sure, he’s young enough to surprise and maybe Brown brings out the best in him, but for now there is little concrete reason for optimism that he will be of any help, at least for this coming year, and we are obviously in win-now mode, so it’s not a time for a developmental project.
Z-man, was only implying Brown may be doing Wiseman a solid ala Leon with his exhibition contracts to get players a better potential future.
Can Drummond pass? I am guessing a hard no. Is 14%, his career high AST% any good? Maybe he can replicate KAT better than Mitch.
Got it, BE, thanks for clarifying.
I think we’re going to end up liking Andre Drummond okay. He still rebounds like a MF on both ends, and the Stretch Drummond thing is at least somewhat intriguing. He shot enough threes last year to make you think maybe that wasn’t a complete fluke.
80% of his 3PA were corner threes, and he shot .361 on those. It’s not like he’s gonna be flinging these things from above the break— he just needs to hit those corner threes.
Completely agree. The guy is the best rebounder per 36 in the last 40 years and still hauled in > 15 /36 last season. He is a negative on the defensive end, but is more versatile than Mitch on the offensive end making better screens and can’t be run of the floor in big spots.
Mitch had incredible synergy with Jalen Brunson, and their lineup stats proved it. That’s the key for Drummond. No one’s going to be mad at him for not playing defense like Mitch, but he needs to develop that synergy or it’s curtains.
Jose had a baby boy and his two daughters are insisting that his name is OG Anunoby.
I never thought being a Knicks fan could be this good.

I will be fine with Drummond eventually. Lot of meat on that bone.
But I probably won’t shut up about Mitch for a very long time
I’ll probably shut up about Mitch when he inevitably suffers a grade 2 calf strain playing his 3rd consecutive game of 25+ minutes…
There is no disputing that a reasonably Mitch is worth every bit of the contract he signed with Boston, while Drummond is worth the minimum, if not close to it. That is a very real gap in value, and it is going to play out situationally on the court, especially in the playoffs.
And that’s the rub here, just like it was the rub with Brown last year. We are at the point where nothing matters much until the playoffs. And that’s where that valuation differential is most likely to show up. I am certainly not counting on Drummond all of a sudden reverting back to a $16M AAV player at this point.
Mitch doesn’t strain, he breaks. Hate the C’s with a vehemence second to none, but always wish ex-Knicks who were true to the blue and orange the best after they leave.
Gotta go with the latter-wishing Mitch an injury-free run to justify his contract while driving his monster trucks through out Boston, hopefully loud and annoyingly.
Drummond shooting 36% is practically meaningless. The actual positive sign is that a team even let him attempt 90 threes.
That’s been his number one obstacle. It’s really hard for coaches to greenlight you to shoot threes after you’ve been in the league for a nearly a century.
My ONLY concern is KATs extension, – why not sign the darn thing already?
I think we’ll end up with Drummond and Wiseman as our C2 and C3 and depth at Westchester with Liam Robbins.
There’s no question that it’s a downgrade at face value but we’re a long way from April.
There’s a lot to speculate. Maybe the Drummond-Wiseman backup duo works out. If not, Deuce is unlikely to end the season as a Knick. He’ll be the bait if a trade is needed. Leon Rose is smartly patient.
Good news is that the season is getting close. I can almost smell it.
My ONLY concern is KATs extension, – why not sign the darn thing already?
My optimistic (but realistic) take is that if there is something to be signed, they have the framework ready. But Leon and Aller will wait to the last minute to finalise the terms, in case opportunities arise for a tweek or two. Also probably means that the max is off the table since you typically don’t wait to sign them.
I look forward to seeing how this forum operates as one for a current championship Knicks team. This is obviously unchartered territory for all of us, and I’m interested to see how it will be different (for example, less urgency leading to less criticism?).
OK, who am I kidding? We’ll always have something to criticize. That’s the nature of sports fandom.
Doogie, I definitely will be totally engaged as always, and will feel the ups and downs vicerally. Yet I can’t imagine someone in my position feeling the same level of urgency as I did pre-championship. For me, and I believe for many if not most others, this was a generational event, one that cast out many demons forever. So the urgency to win, and in particular, to vanquish our opponents and doubters, will always be there, but the urgency to break that long, terrible drought is no longer there to add to the pile.
As to criticism, sure, it’s part of being a sports fan. But criticism is one thing; beating a dead horse is another. Especially so soon after a generational championship. Just my opinion!
I’m of course never wishing an injury on Mitch or any ex-Knick.
But am I expecting one? You betcha.
I actually think it’s best for us if KAT doesn’t sign an extension. I like the idea of him being motivated to prove he’s worth more.
There’s still more juice to squeeze there.
Geo, you mean this if Clyde is not on the broadcast, right? I hope Clyde does it for a long time! 🧡💙
Have you been watching the kvetching about a back up center for the last two months? 🙂
“Have you been watching the kvetching about a back up center for the last two months? 🙂”
Yes. It’s largely been me.
as do i cyber, he seems to be doing fewer games now…
wish he did every game…
I really enjoy the monica and tyler combo…they add to the broadcast…
if mitch and huk had headed west i’d probably be a lot less bugged about the situation…
fact that they’ll be helping division rivals brings me no joy…
Drummond is a backup center. And a very good one.
Mitch is one of the best centers in the NBA, who just happened to be on our bench bc we had two of the ~15 best centers in the league.
It’s the same with Deuce.
Part of what made this team special is it had 7 starters. Now we have 6 and higher profit margin for Dolan.
My main issue with Drummond is that he’s really only good for 15 minutes a game (but Mitch mostly was, too). So if KAT gets injured for any length of time, Drummond cannot sop up those minutes himself, or he will get injured very quickly. We need a 3rd center who can essentially eat innings if either center gets injured during the season who won’t be a catastrophe.
James Wiseman, as currently constructed, is that catastrophe waiting to happen. I’ll take Eubanks on a non-guaranteed contract while we continue to search for someone better.
He was just a UFA and now has the 21st highest paid salary for a center in the NBA so isn’t it a bit of a stretch to call him “one of the best centers in the NBA” ? He was just available for just cash and this is where the league valued him.
Mitch’s salary is probably fair market value. In fact, he might be a bit overpaid on his Celtics deal due to his injury history/restrictions, but not by much. The player option might not age well, but it was a good risk for them.
Drummond is quite a bit less good than Mitch. He is pretty immobile on D while Mitch is capable of covering huge swaths of territory from the rim out to the 3-point line. But Drummond is not a zero, and if you can just get someone to play situational defense somewhere in the vicinity of Mitch’s level you can get away with a two-headed backup monster.
Bottom line is that he was the logical second-apron casualty. Every player in the rotation other than Clarkson served an important role, and Mitch was the only one making enough money to comply with Dolan’s decree.
Still hoping that we come up with a better solution, and perhaps an even better one than Mitch.
Tuned in to watch some Giants rookies… I don’t know if Aaron Donald is still good but Mauigoa is handling him very impressively so far.
So it’s week 2, and like a quarter of the league’s starting qbs are now injured, nice sport.
jameis winston is a hard watch for your team is he’s quarterbacking…
As opposed to doing what? LOL
he seems really good at making pointless semi inspiring speeches to teammates…
football wise, he seems okay at that…
not so great at processing the defense, as a quarterback…
fair point, it’s a really hard thing to do…
always amazed at the brock purdy storyline…what an unlikely irrelevant find by the niners…that dude though is amazing to watch processing a defense at the line…knows exactly what to do when the ball is snapped…
After a long, LONG succession of some of the most pitiful NFL coaches you could ever imagine, a list that includes Josh McDaniel, Jon Gruden, 80 year old Pete Carroll, and Antonio Pierce, the Raiders seem to have stumbled onto an actual NFL caliber head coach in Klint Kubiak.
Their personnel is still a mess, but they have quickly built a good young secondary, have found useful free agents who are playing productive football, and brought in a perfect bridge to Fernando Mendoza in Kirk Cousins.
When you’re literally the worst team in the league, there’s nowhere to go but up, but still, this is the first time I’ve actually looked forward to a Raider game in a really long time.
“jameis winston is a hard watch for your team is he’s quarterbacking…”
For a second I thought you badly misspelled James Wiseman…
ugh, that may end up being true too 🙃
Jaxson Dart: sprained MCL
I wasn’t paying attention to the game that early. He wasn’t doing something he shouldn’t have been doing (being reckless), was he? I get the feeling that he wasn’t, based on the discourse I’ve seen.
