According to one of the articles above, the Knicks will probably not agree to a contract extension for Deuce before the start of the season. Agreeing to one would prevent the Knicks from trading him in the next year, which makes it likely they are offering him in trades for another center.

Good morning, KFNINJ. Your comment this morning reminded me that I wanted to tell you that I’m still enjoying The Capture, even into Episodes 6 and 7, which is rare for me. I’ve also found that Season 1 was in 2019, Season 2 was in 2022, and Season 3 came about this year. A little odd, but there you go.

Clock is definitely ticking on Deuce’s tenure here, which is both a shame and understandable. We have a lot of small guards, and if none of them has quite as quick/effective a trigger as Deuce, Shamet and Jose and Kolek and even Clarkson can do a lot of Deuce-y things in the aggregate, and also provide some skills he doesn’t have. And we just can’t afford his next contract.

If/when he’s traded, does that make Brunson the longest-tenured Knick?

“If/when he’s traded, does that make Brunson the longest-tenured Knick?”

I believe that’s the case. (Sadly, Mitch was 5th *all time*.)

If tenure means having a contract with the Knicks, Doogie is correct. But if tenure includes “having the draft rights to/for”, Rokas is your man.

Well, Deuce is only here one more year than Brunson, so the dropoff is pretty minimal. And the odds are that Brunson will be here for at least another 6 years, catching Willis, Clyde, Dollar Bill, Phil, Oak, and Charlie Ward (!). It would take a couple more to catch Carl Braun for 2nd place. I doubt that he catches Patrick, but hey, you never know!

Clock is definitely ticking on Deuce’s tenure here, which is both a shame and understandable.

As a fan, I hate this, but is there even an offer with Deuce that makes sense?

I know everyone is hoping for a Diabite-level big coming back, but idk if Charlotte does that trade.

And I definitely don’t want to trade Deuce for Sims/Vukcevic/Precious-level guys. I’d rather just keep Deuce for one season and sign a Moses Brown-type guy who is basically 90% of Sims.

I’m a little more optimistic than most about Deuce. I didn’t see the news as the start of a countdown but just the preservation of flexibility.

I would also add there is nothing understandable at all about keeping him here. It’s actually less understandable than letting Mitch go.

The Lakers just sold for $12BN without owning their stadium. The Knicks are probably worth $15BN right now. Give me a fucking break with the second apron and luxury tax already.

There is nothing from either a team building or a financial perspective that makes keeping Deuce difficult.

    1

Leon’s MO has been not to pay market value for young improving players that will be in the rotation, when that value is determined by being a more important contributor elsewhere. It sucks, but can’t complain since the conundrum is because of that player excelling in the Knicks uniform. IQ being the prime example but Obi (while other factors in play) also.

Hubert, I mean it’s understandable in that we need more help on other parts of the roster than another small guard who’s good on defense and shooting 3s. I love Deuce, but if trading him helps shore up the frontcourt, I do that.

    1

If you have to trade a guard, it coukd be Deuce, but it could also be Kolek, depending on what the other team needs.

Leon’s MO has been not to pay market value for young improving players that will be in the rotation, when that value is determined by being a more important contributor elsewhere

I agree with your premise but I see Deuce a little differently than someone like Immanuel Quickley.

Is anyone really likely to see Deuce as a starting PG? He can’t handle the ball.

He’s an undersized wing and we play him 26 mpg. I don’t think a lot of teams are going to want the problems that come with making a 6’2″ wing a 32 mpg starter.

If Deuce was actually capable of a bigger role, I think we’d sign him and trade Mikal.

A six month trade moratorium after a Deuce extension (which would, as of August 12, extend past this year’s trade deadline) is, per the linked Daily Knicks article, not as black-and-white as Bondy states (and Bleacher Report repeats). The rule could be avoided if the extension met the following three criteria:

His extension could not be longer than for three additional seasons on top of 2026-27. (He is currently eligible to sign a four-year deal.)
His annual salary cannot decrease or increase by more than 5 percent each year.
He cannot make more than 120 percent of the league’s average salary in his new deal.

Those are not infeasible criteria to meet. The DK article also points out that an extension could, in theory, make Deuce more tradeable, because his future cost would be controlled and predictable for the acquiring team.

But I don’t expect an extension to happen because I don’t believe Knicks want to be tied to one in the event they can’t trade Deuce.

I don’t think Leon’s MO isn’t the one we have to be concerned with here. It’s Dolan’s MO that’s forcing the issue. He needs to find religion on the second apron or this team is going to lose a valuable piece every summer. The cap projections are pretty clear: we either break the second apron, or we break up the team.

The difference a NBA finals run makes? $66.7 million.Knicks played 9 playoff MSG games in 2025 and 9 in 2026, but made $66.7 million more this year in playoff-related revenue than 2025's ECF run because of higher ticket prices + merch revenue, according to MSG Sports SEC filing— Mike Vorkunov (@MikeVorkunov) August 13, 2026

Mind you, this is not $66.7M total. This is $66.7M more than the team made last year, despite playing the same number of home games in the playoffs.

I get that a lot of people will fight for James Dolan’s god given right to divest from the basketball team they root for, but fans spending lavishly and directly on the team only to watch the owner pocket that money feels like a violation of a social contract of sorts.

Small markets claim they can’t spend similarly to large markets because they don’t generate equivalent revenue. Those claims can certainly be empirically dubious, but the logic at least checks out.

What we have here is, to put it lightly, a very different situation.

    3

“And I definitely don’t want to trade Deuce for Sims/Vukcevic/Precious-level guys.”

Well, of course not. It would have to be Deuce for Sims++, if we were of a mind to do something like that at all.

Hubert, I mean it’s understandable in that we need more help on other parts of the roster than another small guard who’s good on defense and shooting 3s. I love Deuce, but if trading him helps shore up the frontcourt, I do that

That may be true this year. But Deuce likely has 5 or 6 valuable years in front of him and I wouldn’t sell those for a stopgap solution that is only marginally better than Drummond. If we can trade him straight up for another long term piece like Ware, that’s another thing entirely, but that doesn’t seem likely.

I also think it’s optimistic to feel like Jose & Landry have Deuce’s position covered. I appreciate what they did last year but Jose is a streaky player who was often unplayable, and Landry is unfortunately frail. We might need Deuce more than a center in as little as 6 months.

Mind you, this is not $66.7M total. This is $66.7M more than the team made last year, despite playing the same number of home games in the playoffs.

Another takeaway from that run — was all the missed home games due to the short series means there was less profit being dumped into Guitar Jimmy’s Scrooge McDuck coin vault.

Still clinging to the dream of Diabate & his $2.5 million salary as the player that Leon is looking to trade Deuce away for.

The dominoes have yet to begin falling in Charlotte, who appears to have a surplus of bigs after recently trading for Naz, drafting Steinbach in the 1st round this year, and Kalkbrenner with a high 2nd last year. Diabate could ultimately wind up as odd man out. That’s my hope, anyways.

    1

Mind you, this is not $66.7M total. This is $66.7M more than the team made last year, despite playing the same number of home games in the playoffs.

It’s also only as of June 30. I’m sure they’ve been making a ton of money in merch since then and the ticket prices will be even higher when the schedule is finally released.

    1

“The dominoes have yet to begin falling in Charlotte, who appears to have a surplus of bigs after recently trading for Naz, drafting Steinbach in the 1st round this year, and Kalkbrenner with a high 2nd last year. Diabate could ultimately wind up as odd man out. That’s my hope, anyways.”

I’d be pretty happy with Kalkbrenner, too. We’re not getting Naz, and Steinbach (although a little enticing)—well, I was gonna say “no,” but sure. But they didn’t draft him to trade him, either. Diabate/Kalk best bets from the Hornets Nest.

I think money is secondary to overall flexibiity in coming years as to why Dolan AND Leon are reluctant to go over the 2nd apron. They want to keep the starting core together and also be able to retool and rebuild in coming years. I’m sure if the money got outrageous if would be a much bigger part of the decision making process, but I don’t think that was the case with Mitch or will be the case Deuce. Mitch is a backup and it was partly about reliability and being able to play him down the stretch. I love Deuce and think his impact is a bit underrated, but the emergence of Shamet has made Deuce a bit superfluous even if you think Deuce is the better player.

IMO if in some theoretical world they had to go over the 2nd apron to keep OG, it would done without much hestitation.

    1

I think money is secondary to overall flexibiity in coming years as to why Dolan AND Leon are reluctant to go over the 2nd apron.

Well James Dolan is a mouth breathing moron, so I don’t really give a shit what he thinks about “flexibility.” If he’s involved in the basketball aspect of this in any way then we are doing it wrong.

If he doesn’t want to spend his own money that’s one thing, but his opinions about flexibility or roster construction are less than worthless. The guy thought it was a good idea to write and release a song about Trayvon Martin. He is what’s known colloquially as a dumbass.

Leon’s true feelings about the second apron are less clear.

God-given right? Weird language, coming from a lawyer. He’s the principal owner of the team that can do whatever the fuck he wants, within the law and the collective bargaining agreement. Every owner or ownership group can do the same thing.

Ironically, it seems to be certain parts of the fan base that feel that they have a God given right to ownership doing whatever they want them to do.

Fans have the right to consume a product or move on from it. They have the right to bitch and moan at ownership, coaches, players, etc. however and whenever they feel like it. But they don’t have the right to assume that there’s any kind of social contract whatsoever.

One bit of irony here is that the same fans who are rueing Dolan‘s decision regarding the second apron were also rueing his decision to hire Leon Rose in the first place. It’s also sort of ironic that without Dolan allegedly overruling Leon and firing Thibs, we wouldn’t be discussing these things with a glorious championship in the backdrop.

In fact, on the list of folks that someone posted yesterday were wildly underestimated, Dolan‘s name should be at the top of the list. Contrary to his past over-involvement, he only meddled into two instances since the brilliant hiring of Leon: firing Thibs, and issuing a ultimatum to the world that this team must get to the finals and should win a championship. We can debate whether this or his subsequent locker room speech made any difference, but it obviously didn’t hurt, and personally, I think it helped. OTOH, he did not force Leon to acquire Spida at all costs, like he did with Melo, or veto the trade for OG in the midst of an ugly lawsuit, like he did with Kyle Lowry.

So my guess is that if Dolan read all the shit that had been posted about him personally here on KB, including what was posted today, he would say take your talk about social contract and stick it up your ass. I owe you nothing.

I despise Dolan as much as anyone, but dealing with his mercurial dumbass decision-making is the going rate for consuming his product. I’m pretty much at peace with it right now.

I’m not digitally hip enough to have heard of “Enshittification” until y’all were talking about it the other day, but now that I know what it means it seems to apply to Dolan, no?

He spared no expense for decades on the product, the Knicks finally win a title and become the premier basketball product in the world, and literally three days after achieving critical mass he does a full 180, shifting his focus from the users to the shareholders and issuing a decree to management to reduce costs and deplete the product immediately.

    Sounds like enshittification.

We can debate whether this or his subsequent locker room speech made any difference, but it obviously didn’t hurt, and personally, I think it helped…I despise Dolan as much as anyone

zman abhors some of you so much that in the name of pwning you online he is willing to convince himself that a man he hates with all his sentient muster, one of the least emotionally resonant humans we may ever cross memes with, directly helped the knicks win a championship with a well delivered fornication warning. think about what this says about you as person.

    8

Pt all that it sez is that I can divorce myself from my disgust for a guy to form an opinion on his involvement in a specific occurrence, or series of occurrences.

interesting question on jimmy d, you are a team/staff member and the guy has done nothing but signed your checks and been cordial with you…

do you still hold all the other shit against the guy…

drive on with your life and trust god will sort it out in the end (dust to dust and stuff), or figure out some way to let your disapproval of their past/present behavior known…

bet you jimmy d can’t even look down to see his own dick, abstinence is probably pretty easy for him at this stage in his life…

hoping quinten not only is different in his care for his body, but eventually also the knicks…

I have often made the case that Dolan is fine as owners go. Would you rather have the owner of the Kings, or Ishbia, or the guy who just bought the Trail Blazers, to give some examples?

As for being small market, I’m not sure that’s a competitive disadvantage. The owners are so rich now, it’s their management style that affects the team’s success, not their ability to spend. Of course the small market teams have less revenue but they also cost less to buy. And owners make their money from capital appreciation, not day to day profit.

owner of the Kings, or Ishbia, or the guy who just bought the Trail Blazers

Or a member of the Kushner Syndicate.

I have often made the case that Dolan is fine as owners go. Would you rather have the owner of the Kings, or Ishbia, or the guy who just bought the Trail Blazers, to give some examples?

There’s a wide gulf between “absolute bottom of the barrel” and “fine.”

Vanilla Ice’s grunge album is terrible and so is Poison’s “Swallow This: Live.” One might be worse than the other but neither is “fine.”

    2

Also, looks like nearly half the schedule, 34 games, will be on national TV.

    NBC: 9 games

    Prime: 10 games

    ESPN: 7 games

    ABC: 6 games

    Peacock: 2 games

    1

December will be brutal if the Knicks make another cup run. If they play in the final they will have a back-to-back in Miami the next day.

13 out of 16 games on the road from Dec 1 to Jan 8.

Vincoug, MSG networks can’t be thrilled about that. They have less games to broadcast.

I’m thrilled about it, at least until/unless I heard that DAZN is more worth the money than Gotham Sports was. National games are my only way to watch the team these last few years.

It’s definitely good for you Alan. For me it doesn’t make a difference if I’m still in China. If I’m back in the US I’ll be in the same boat as you.

“Two things can be true at the same time”

You are actually pointing out 4 things:

    1) The Knicks won a championship
    2) James Dolan is an ass
    3) James Dolan had nothing to do with winning a championship
    4) James Dolan was to busy focusing on the Sphere to get in the way of winning a championship (I’m assuming that’s what you meant, please clarify if you mean otherwise

Number 1 is an indisputable fact
Number 2 is a widely-held opinion, although whether it is “true” or not depends on your definition of “ass.”
Number 3 is obviously false, unless you think that a) hiring Leon and b) firing Thibs had nothing to do with winning a championship
Number 4 is possibly “partially” true, but hardly provable. Again, he was involved enough to throw tens of millions of dollars away on the firing and replacement of Thibs. Since there is no evidence that Dolan meddled before that point, and some clear evidence that he didn’t (e.g. the OG trade, the Spida non-trade), one can conjecture that he was too distracted by the Sphere to have detrimentally stuck his nose in.

So while 2 (or 4) things can be true at the same time, in this case, they most likely aren’t.

My ability to enjoy watching my favorite professional sports teams is in no way enhanced by whatever knowledge I may possess about the owners of those teams. So I try to compartmentalize said knowledge as much as I possibly can from the overall fan experience.

It’s hard because the actions of team owners do become part of the story from time to time and impossible to ignore. When it is possible to ignore, rooting for the Knicks becomes that much easier, absent the awareness that whatever success the team enjoys will also benefit James Dolan. Same holds true for the Giants and the Maras (as well as co-owner Steve “Epstein Files” Tisch); the Mets & Steve “Insider Trader” Cohen.

Other than the Green Bay Packers, I can’t think of any pro teams with an ownership of whom its fan base can justifiably feel proud.

As I said, all those things are true. But whatever, you can see it as you like.

It’s a strange hill to die on

“Other than the Green Bay Packers, I can’t think of any pro teams with an ownership of whom its fan base can justifiably feel proud”

    The Heat.The Steeelers.

“As I said, all those things are true. But whatever, you can see it as you like.

It’s a strange hill to die on”

So wait, you’re saying that Dolan’s decisions to hire Leon and fire Thibs had nothing to do with winning a championship?

THAT’S a strange hill to die on!

It’s funny because Dolan was on his way to a glorious second act like George Steinbrenner had. The team was fire. All these new Knicks fans didn’t really know anything about his past. And he was handed an opportunity to turn the Yankees into the Dodgers by flexing his financial might.

Instead he invites Trump to a game, starts a feud with the mayor, has that pathetic speech at the parade, and decides it’s time to run the Knicks like a small market. An incredible series of double middle fingers to the fans.

Just goes to show you some people are just too much of an asshole to ever be loved.

I hope Leon helps him find religion on the apron before it’s too late. Even if you just sign Deuce McBride to trade during the year, you can’t let that guy walk for some bullshit “flexibility” that doesn’t exist.

he invites Trump to a game, starts a feud with the mayor, has that pathetic speech at the parade, and decides it’s time to run the Knicks like a small market. An incredible series of double middle fingers to the fans.

well now, when you put it like that…

too funny, he is to loud and proud to be anything else but himself…

I think it’s important to keep in mind that this isn’t just some random championship season surrounded by mostly mediocre dogshit. Since Dolan hired Leon, the Knicks have made the playoffs in 5 of 6 years, made the conference semi’s in 4 consecutive years, made the conference finals in 2 consecutive years, and won a championship with a team so compelling that it is being referred to by notable pundits as America’s Team. Aside from everyone’s opinion about whether going into the second apron is merited, the fact is that they have done this without going into the second apron (hi Celts!), or tanking and winning the lottery (hi Spurs!), or hitting the jackpot on a non-lottery draft pick (hi Bucks and Nuggets!), or selling the farm for a MVP on a supermax (the “only path” via the hybrid strategy, or so I was told).

And I don’t think one has to squint very hard to see this team having a floor somewhere in top 8 or so for the next 3-4 years.

I think Dolan is definitely an asshole, but the vast, vast, vast majority of diehard fans don’t really give a shit about him being an asshole right now. The folks outraged here on KB are in the 1%. Is that not extremely obvious? THAT’S who Dolan is giving the double middle finger to. Ticket prices keep going up and there is going to be a great product on the floor for the next few years. Demand for the product hasn’t waned a single iota because Mitch is gone for reasons.

If Dolan had sold the team and the same scenario unfolded, folks would be writing songs of worship to the new guy. And if the new guy was more media-friendly but still didn’t allow the team to go into the second apron at this same point, my guess is that the criticism would be far less harsh.

As a diehard fan, I know that I have no control over who owns the teams I root for or the decisions that they make. Right now, my 3 guys are Steve Cohen, Woody Johnson, and James Dolan. Hardly a lovable trio. At least one of them is coming through for his team’s long-suffering fans, even if not optimally.

God-given right? Weird language, coming from a lawyer.

Well, I admit to changing up my prose a bit when I switch from briefs to knickerblogger, but I was referring to people who say things like this:

He’s the principal owner of the team that can do whatever the fuck he wants

There are only so many ways I can make clear that I am not contesting his legal right to pocket the gobs of money Knicks fans generated for him instead of spending some of it on improving the Knicks’ chances to go back-to-back. He is absolutely allowed to buy more stupid fucking fedoras instead of re-signing Mitchell Robinson. We do not disagree on this point.

    I just think it’s shitty.

    5

Knicks are again home and off on Thanksgiving. They were on the road for Thanksgiving two years ago at Thibs request to minimize distractions, and I heard that became a problem with the family-oriented roster. https://t.co/GSwQJbTpMz— Stefan Bondy (@SbondyNBA) August 13, 2026

OMFG Thibs is such a lunatic.

    4

It seems to me some people conclude that because they don’t like Dolan as a person, everything he does must bad. But if you hold him responsible for hiring Phil Jackson and blame him for Jackson’s results, then it’s fair to give him credit for Leon. And thus he does good things too.

The rogue’s gallery of losers and charlatans James Dolan hired before Leon Rose won ONE playoff series in 22 seasons. I’m glad the blind squirrel finally found the nut, but come on. If Leon quit tomorrow Dolan would probably bring Steve Mills back again.

And no, I don’t think his “win one for the Gipper” speech in which he advocated for the players to not fuck their wives was a contributing factor to the championship.

that’s okay raven, out here in cali, we are about to pick their pockets…

about 200 or so folks gonna seriously think of relocating shortly out of the golden state…

5% of a billion is 50 million…no doubt a bunch of those folks will be able to get to beneath one billion…still, probably at least a 100 of them are about to get hit with some heck of a supplemental tax later this year…

works for me though…one billion percent…

but the vast, vast, vast majority of diehard fans don’t really give a shit about him being an asshole right now.

With all due respect Zman, I think you’re vastly underestimating the average diehard Knicks fan. I think you’re talking about the new Vogue intern who moved to the city 2 years ago and bought her first Knicks hat 3 months ago.

Any real fan was torn up about losing Mitch, our longest tenured Knick who was often a game changer. And I’d venture to say that the majority of diehards know there was a choice in the matter. These people aren’t stupid.

In fact, this whole convo is making me angry all over again while I’m trying hard to move on. Stop rage baiting!

    FUCK.

    DOLAN.

Any real fan was torn up about losing Mitch, our longest tenured Knick who was often a game changer. And I’d venture to say that the majority of diehards know there was a choice in the matter. These people aren’t stupid.

Yeah, I’m also confused by this refrain. All of my Knicks fan friends who meet the “knows who Immanuel Quickley is” threshold are upset about Mitch, and their only knowledge of this website comes from me trying to explain what the hell I’m doing when I’m typing something that doesn’t look remotely like a text into my phone.

People getting mad at owners who cheap out on championship teams is really not some niche, hyper-online phenomenon.

I was in a few Miami-based sports fan circles when I lived there, and I can assure everyone that Marlins fans don’t feel obligated to express profound gratitude to Jeffrey Loria and constantly clear their throats about Jeffrey Loria’s RIGHT to do WHATEVER the FUCK he WANTS.

And no, I don’t think his “win one for the Gipper” speech in which he advocated for the players to not fuck their wives was a contributing factor to the championship.

This might be the most implausible thing ever suggested on a forum where people argued that trading for Andrea Bargnani was smart.

I’m very willing to give Dolan his due for delivering the Knicks championship. He deserves it. Hiring Leon was bold and proved smart. Pushing Thibs out the door was necessary and overdue. He wasn’t just along for the ride, he helped steer the ship.

He really stepped in shit after he won, though. So he’ll continue to be the villain.

Personally, I don’t think anyone should have opinions about anything or anyone. When something happens, we should all just remark that the thing happened and not comment if the thing is good or bad or if there’s a different way to do the thing.

    5

I think the guy who thought Leon should trade the farm from Joel Embiid should have at least a bit of humility. In fact, said poster has been wrong about way more than he’s been right about for quite some time now. But hey, tantrum on!!

And yeah, I think that the owner showing confidence in his team to their faces tends to help. Did it in this case? Well we have proof that it didn’t hurt. It either meant nothing or it helped.

lol always such an awkward moment

No one has yet seen me physically posting here, so other than my wife — who mainly knows Knickerblogger exists as a way to explain how I met Frank, and how Frank introduced me to the surgeon who helped fix my health problems — when I talk to someone about a conversation here, I just refer to it as “my Knicks fan group chat.”

I don’t have an opinion about you posting how no one should have an opinion on anything.

Any real fan was torn up about losing Mitch, our longest tenured Knick who was often a game changer.

    I wasn’t
I was actually tired by his shit

And I’d venture to say that the majority of diehards know there was a choice in the matter. These people aren’t stupid.

Building theories upon conjectures is fun and goes through time as inside jokes and witty guesses but let’s not make it too serious.

Free agent Bradley Beal has agreed to a two-year, $13.2 million deal to return to the Los Angeles Clippers, with a player option in the second season,

    1. Isn’t Beal washed? Two years with a player option for the second?!?!

    2. Even though Beal is washed, didn’t everyone assume the Heat would try to grab him to fill out their rotation.

Yeah, I assumed Beal would chase a ring with the Heat, but maybe they didn’t want him. Not sure how they can fill out that roster, though. They really don’t scare me.

Beal seems decent enough when healthy. Probably puts some butts in seats while they ride out their current disorder.
