I somehow didn’t realize Deuce was playing through a pretty serious groin injury through the playoffs. Saw it in that same interview.
I remember hearing rumors that he was playing hurt, although I never got clarity on what was going on.
One of the reasons I’m less happy than some others seeing his name bandied about in all the various trade rumors. I think he can continue to be a really important cog for our team’s relevance as a serious contender…
Raven dug Deuce before it was cool.
Right. Unfortunately he can also be one of the most helpful pieces in getting us what we are really lacking right now: a backup center.
For a while he was weirdly the most impactful player in the organization by APM. This was a couple years back. And then he looked better than Brunson two years ago, although Brunson was hobbled at the time.
In subsequent years the numbers evened out I think.
But I can remember musing on whether Deuce was (at the time) the best player on the team.
I hope he gets back to that form.
We do need to trade deuce to plug Dolan’s new Thermal Exhaust Port, but I’ll grieve him almost as much as Mitch.
He’s made himself into a fantastic shooter and he’s always been great defensively. He’s just a tiny 3&D wing and not a PG, but he’s still just about the most additive player archetype in the league, and losing him will make us shallower and overall worse.
Any move to satisfactorily plug the TEP will cause knock-on effects elsewhere in the roster except drafting a cromulent C, which begs the question of Why the Fuck Didn’t We Just Do That?
Deuce is the new Mitch and I hope we cling to him like JVG clung to Alonzo’s leg.
Yeah, I would really hate to lose Deuce. He’s great to watch on D and basically the archetype for how to improve your game on offense.
Trading Deuce would be very ill advised. He’s their most important bench player now that Mitch is gone. You can plug him in virtually any lineup and it just works. He’s like OG in some ways (in his ability to be additive and easily complement other pieces).
Love Deuce but Leon clearly made his decison and went with Shamet and Alvarado.
Only way Deuce survives is if opposing GM that’s holding a center (ex. Lively) captive demands Shamet + (Dadier, Kolek + draft picks) instead of Deuce at the trade deadline.
Same as DDV was demanded by Minnesotta and Leon didn’t want to include him on the KAT trade until he had too.

I don’t think this iteration of the Knicks will ever rely on a rookie for a real contribution.
They’re so meticulous with the cap, maybe they just accepted their ability to prognosticate professional productivity is limited enough to just skirt that minefield of guaranteed rookie money entirely.
I’m inferring a lot but I love that they’re trying to cut against the grain, and obviously they still extract value from the draft/picks. How is Jose Alvarado only worth two 2nds?
And they do still invest in young talent – they drafted the 4 rookies a couple years back, some of whom might be contributors this year (which also maybe says something about a philosophy around seasoning players). Mo Diawara just got a contract a little less valuable than the one that #30 overall got in the last draft.
Diawara in particular was an outstanding process – what team wouldn’t want a year of in-house evaluation before committing a guaranteed contract?
I don’t mind their approach to the draft at all and all the weird little draft day trades are also pretty fun

always thought of deuce as marcus smart lite, not sure how their stats match up, but smart has had a very good career…

Deuce is a classic luxury tax casualty (second apron mandate irrelevant in this). He will get a huge pay rise, but not from us, since he won’t start. You can’t pay a valuable rotation player who is out of the rookie scale (or a slightly late bloomer) what he is worth if your starting 5 are contending and all are off the rookie scale.
I think y’all are sleeping on tyler kolek’s trade value. He had a good sophomore season, plays a premium position, and is on a great contract for two more seasons. I don’t think he lost much shine because the Knicks were unwilling to pin their title aspirations on a sophomore PG.
All of the teams with cheap centers are non contenders (Charlotte, Milwaukee, Phoenix, Dallas). I suspect Kolek & Diawara would be more appealing than Deuce in a contract year.
How much do you think he’ll get?
It wasn’t a banner summer for 3&D wings. I think the market places him somewhere between 2/16 and 3/27.

thought he really shined in his portrayal of Viserys, authenticity, like him a lot in Mobland too…the movie cast in this zombie story is well above expected…
try to be careful when indulging in the horror or war genres…i’m already freaked out enough inside, don’t need to be pushing my own buttons too much…
may have to track down the book this zombie flix is based off…

I love Deuce but he never was nor ever will be anywhere near close to as good a player as Brunson.
4 years, $36M = $9M… start at $7.9M ascending, that’s only a $4M raise.
There’s a lot of ways to make that work next summer.
One off the top of my head…
you could replace Clarkson and Dadiet with a couple of rookie minimums to recoup $2.5M, then start Josh Hart’s extension at $1.5M less.
You could trade Landry Shamet.
You can get KAT to take $4m less than the max.
I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time staring at our multi year cap table, and the good news is Mitch and the two kinds we didn’t draft are very likely going to be the last players we lose to this stupid edict until Brunson’s next contract.
I think Deuce will be closer to $16M.
He hits 3s at an absurdly high rate at an absurdly high volume while playing harassing PoA defense and is 53rd in 4yr RAPM.
A guy like Duncan Robinson makes $16M and doesn’t defend or have the same level of impact stats. Deuce has been near his level of 3pt shooting the past 3 seasons.
maybe split the difference between 9 and 16…

I think Rui’s a better comp, though. He’s a 6’10” Deuce and only got 2/28.
Duncan was signed a year ago. The salary crunch hadn’t started.
He also only got one year guaranteed and is probably getting traded and waived this year. He’s basically a walking TPE who can shoot.
I did not know until last minute that Rui hit 44.3% of his threes last year.
Things are getting hot over by the three-point line these days…
They really aren’t that similar as shooters. Rui took 6.6 threes per 100 poss. Deuce took 12.4 last season. That’s roughly average volume compared to what would have been 13th in the league.
Also, Rui’s impact stats aren’t anywhere near Deuce’s numbers.

Thank god we’ll have flexibility, though.
The salary crunch could be very real. The league has not been making as much money as they thought.
Contracts with 8% raises are going up faster than the salary cap, which leaves less for guys looking to get new contracts.
It’ll be interesting to see what Deuce gets. End of the day, whatever Deuce does this year will drastically change his next contract anyway.
The crazy thing is if we’d have operated as an over-the-SA team while everyone else is trimming fat we’d have ended up with a dodgers-like competitive advantage over the rest of the league. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity to flex large market power in a league designed to foster competitive balance.
Sigh.
I’m on team keep Deuce and find a tall stiff somewhere for peanuts.
