I looked at a few of the names on the list.
I think the methodology or the way the question was worded has to be very flawed, some people are confusing fame and talent with popularity or they weren’t asking basketball fans that actually watched his behavior and attitude over the years.
It has James rated as more popular than Curry.
IMO there’s a 0% chance that’s correct.
In all the years Curry has been in the league, I never heard a fan say single bad word about him.
When I’m on facebook or other forums and I see posts about the all time great players and James is included among them, the thread is less about how great Bird, Magic, Jordan, Kobe, James, Kareem etc.. were and comparisons of their skills. It often turns into a James bashing contest. A lot basketball fans dislike him.
So I’ll qualify it by saying, among knowledgable basketball fans James is not very popular personality relative to some other stars.

This is the epitome of an epistemic bubble, Strat. Outside of your algorithm, LeBron is one of the most widely admired athletes on the planet.
Jokic is still a relatively young man, but his last 6 seasons have been the best anyone has ever played in a row and easily could have won MVP every season. His advanced numbers dwarf anyone. And he hasn’t ever played with a Pippen, Kyrie, Magic or Wade.
If I had one pick to start a team, he’d be my guy. He is great himself and makes the others around him better with his unselfish play and immaculate passing.
He’d be in the Pantheon if he played in a major market. Could you imagine going to the Garden to see him play every night?
What a joy it must be to play with him.

James is corny and a clever stupid. He’s shrewdish enough to play the game of life and talented enough to make any choices he fucks up unimportant. He’d be so much more enjoyable as an athlete if we didn’t have to watch his puppet show. They’re fun for kids but on millionaire billionaire warrior kings they’re annoying. He’s the Kim Kardashian of Basketball.

DRed said he was a poster on baseball blogs, think it was the Yankees when we were trying to find the guy I can’t remember his name, but incessantly attacked and parsed every post. Lived in Brooklyn and liked well made pizza. Hope he is well and perhaps like EB will be working for a non Knicks FO next season so can’t comment here anymore.

Knicks Twitter is suddenly horny for Oscar Tshiebwe (who I’ll admit I never heard of; I’ve stopped watching college). It looks like the offense is there but 0.3 blocks per 36 minutes, would suggest he’s no rim protector.
BPM numbers in college were good; made an SEC All-Defensive Team; but it didn’t translate.
I see that Sharpe the guy I had interest in the Knicks picking up got picked up by the Clippers yesterday.

Tshiebwe has some fun per-36 and efficiency numbers, but he’s 6’8″ and DEPM thinks he’s god awful.
If he wants a two-way, I’m all for it just because I don’t see anyone clearly better out there.

It was actually worse than that. We lost two centers in about one hour.
As a guy who didn’t watch a single pitch of baseball from 2009-2024, I just learned the most outlandish thing: David Cone is NOT in the Hall of Fame! That is bonkers. He was not only one of the best pitchers of his generation, he was a tireless ambassador for the game in a very tainted era. Are the KB stat nerds of yore that were out to kill the eye test to blame for this??
Very good one, Donnie, I asked my resident AI and he/she/it was very angry about it, citing a great basket of great reasons he should be. Apparently he was on the ballot once and only got 3.9% votes, which I think triggers automatic removal.
But yeah, the list of superlatives is quite long… five World Series titles, a Cy Young, five all-star games, a perfect game, 20-win seasons in 1988, 1990, 1991; led NL in strikeouts twice, 2,668 strikeouts overall for 27th all-time, 62.3 WAR tied for 161st all-time among pitchers. Yadda yadda.

HAL seems to think he should be a hall of famer…no modern pitcher will ever win the number of games he won (194), cy young, 8 – 3 post season mark, 5 rings…got a perfect game in pinstripes…

I always was under the impression Cone was a step down from the elite guys. I was also like 8, so idk. The numbers are very good and hall-worthy.

Not that it would be the difference in his HOF candidacy but Cone was alleged to have done one crazy thing in the bullpen
Cone is probably the single most analytics-familiar person in all of MLB broadcasting, and I’ve always found it kinda funny because it could be construed as self-serving.
(I think he’s a genuinely smart guy and a great announcer who arrived at all of his conclusions on the merits)

The whole came about because Dallas wanted Risacher, rather than because OKC wanted to move Dort.
I am going to be very surprised if Risacher ends up a star but clearly the Mavs see something.
I found a trade for a known center that actually works in the trade machine and gives us a young big man, but I’m not sure I like it, so I am throwing it out here for discussion. It’s trading Miles McBride for Yang Hansen. Portland has Clingan, Williams and just acquired Branden Carlson, so not only would they still have three centers, but acquiring Carlson suggests they don’t plan to use Yang. McBride is great for us, but we have other guards. Portland could use a defensive minded guard. McBride is more established in the NBA, so maybe we could also get a pick or two.
My main worry about the trade is perhaps Yang really isn’t good, despite his high draft position and all the hype.
I sent them an email from their registered email address. But I received no reply.
Yang seems un-good, and they’d have to give us a whole hell of a lot more to trade Deuce away to them. Agree that they have a surplus of centers, but their surplus is far inferior to Dallas’ surplus.
Not a huge Yang fan. They definitely reached for him in the draft.
I did not realize Cone was a broadcaster, I bet he’s good. (I used to read his column in Newsday when I was a kid, he strikes me as a Steve Kerr type polymath)
As a young attendee of David Cone’s perfect game, I think that he certainly deserves the hall of fame!
