Actually I think he might be. At least in the modern era.
There are many instances where another team will go way over market value to poach a player on a championship deal, and you can’t match the offer because it would be bad for the roster.
And there are many instances where a champion lets a pricey veteran go because they have a young player coming up they think is better.
But those are both GM-level decisions.
This might be the first time in my life a sports owner told his GM to make his championship roster materially worse for no good reason other than to save himself money.
It’s definitely the first time it happened in modern basketball. The Tyson Chandler thing was idiotic, but Cuban wasn’t pinching pennies — he had a cockamamie dream about getting Dwight Howard.
It’s a real kick in the balls, particularly when Dolan’s only redeeming trait was his willingness to spend.
