Really dead time of the year. Our first summer league game isn’t until Friday. Maybe Leon makes another move in the next few days āĀ be it Clarkson, a trade for a third center, or something we’re not expecting (which is often his MO) āĀ but otherwise not a lot of Knicks stuff to talk about. Interesting. Thatās the same max KAT is eligible for. Mitchell is much younger and more of a flight risk, though. It makes more sense for Cleveland to be desperate than us.

The lesson behind Jaylen Brown should have been if you give that much money to a non superstar you have an immediate albatross on your hands. But Washington and now Cleveland both gave them out anyway. I pray we have more restraint.
Yeah, handing out giant contracts to people on their early thirties makes no sense. But you are kind of forced to do it.

I am not a fan of Taris Reed, Jr. Seems like he’s a couple of years away, and that’s on the offensive end. The defense is a major question mark. He doesn’t move at NBA speed.
I’m glad we didn’t draft him. don’t think you draft a first rounder in this window unless you are very confident that he can earn a rotation spot in short order. You are better off with a vet’s minimum guy or a second round flyer on a second-round minimum. Had Zuby fallen, maybe he’d be worth it, but probably not. Mo is definitely the better prospect and Zuby would never crack this rotation unless we had a rash of injuries or made a trade.
The real head-scratcher for me was trading Onyenso for cash. I also think Veesaar was worth a shot. We clearly are going to need bigs in the next couple of years, so why not take a flyer on a developmental big?

I agree on Brown and Spida, but Trae Young is getting around 30% of the cap. I don’t think he’s worth anywhere near that, but they have a bunch of rookie contracts and AD will not be on the team by the time Sarr needs to get paid. Trae is bad value cap-wise, but he will make the Wiz competitive and draw fans to the arena in a Lob City kind of way.
Who was going to sign Trae for anywhere near that number?
Devil’s advocate: if the KAT who played from Game 4 of the Atlanta series through Game 4 of the Finals is who he is going forward (at least the majority of the time), is that guy still a non-superstar?
There is nothing we have seen in 5 years of Leon that remotely shows giving a bad contract. A few might have looked bad to the cogniscenti at the time (Bridges, OG and Brunson) but they have all proven to be good or extreme value in the fullness of time.

Yeah the math ain’t mathin’ between the salary cap and aprons and these max contracts that veteran star players in their 30’s are eligible for.
I’m all for dudes getting paid, though. So there needs to be a solution. Just because you draft or sign a top 5 player in their 20’s and get some great seasons out of them, even a chip, doesn’t mean your team should be hamstrung when they hit their 30’s nor should you have to make the choice of letting a franchise player walk or go somewhere else.
I don’t want the Warriors to win more rings but being punished while Steph Curry is in his decline phase because you drafted him and got some rings out of it is dumb. You should be able to reward your franchise players with big contracts when their old for the work they did and not have to suck because of it.
If they do sign them to these deals, you then have weird situations like what happened to Jaylen Brown or teams are forced to trade away picks to try and get age appropriate role players to surround their aging star with in order to compete, which never works.
KAT has 800 games of empty calorie Fugazy all star stats and 15 games of Second team (not as good as Jokic) All NBA play.
Not ever giving 70M/year in his mid 30’s for that. Ever.

This could fall under the āBeggars canāt be choosersā umbrella. The Knicks are the reigning champs, but they could still use another low-turnover ball-handler whoās comfortable teeing up shots for himself, and for others.
Going on 37 years old, DeRozan continues to fit that bill. Yet, between his ball dominance and low-activity defense, chasing him stands to do more harm than good.
DeMar DeRozan isnāt adaptable enough to play for the Knicks
Gauging DeRozanās interest in joining New Yorkās title defense would make sense if he had the ability to make a consistent impact away from the ball. He doesnāt.
This past season in Sacramento, DeRozan commanded around 35.1 percent of the teamās on-ball actions when in the game, according to BBall Index. That ranked in the 83rd percentile, and was still his lowest mark since his rookie season in 2013-14.
Jalen Brunson and Jose Alvarado were the only Knicks rotation players last year to soak up 35 percent of the teamās on-ball actions. And both of them have the spot-up touch necessary to lower that number when needed. DeRozan, meanwhile, just ranked in 22nd percentile of three-point volume per 75 possessions, on lackluster efficiency.
With so much secondary talent on the roster after Brunson, not to mention a new version of Karl-Anthony Towns at their disposal, the Knicks canāt afford to funnel the on-ball touches necessary to maximize DeRozanās impact.
Even if they could, theyād still have to grapple with his finite range, and more critically, defensive shortcomings. DeRozan is basically a 4 on the less glamorous end, and he doesnāt step in to take charges to offset his limitations like Brunson. His teams have only fared better defensively with him on the court twiceāand not since 2015.
New York shouldnāt be shaking up the rotation for DeRozan
Incorporating DeRozan isnāt as easy as just giving him Alvaradoās backup floor general role, either. New York would gain on-ball craft and passing, but at the expense of defense and overall fit. Head coach Mike Brown would need to futz and fiddle with the rotation to make sure DeRozan isnāt spending too much time alongside other limited shooters like Josh Hart and Andre Drummond.
All of this presumes DeRozan is willing to accept a bench role, too. Thatās debatable. At best.
DeRozan has not come off the bench for a single game since he was a rookie. And even then, he only came off the pine on 12 occasions.
Futzing with the starting and closing units of the reigning champ is seldom recommended. The Knicks can talk themselves into it if LeBron James is the one signing a minimum contract. It cannot even be a consideration with DeRozan.
So while it may be tempting to add someone who just averaged 18 points and four assists while downing over 52 percent of his twos, New York should resist the urge at all costs. DeRozanās game is a poor fit. And the role heās bound to be after is an even worse one.

You’re forgetting the summer of 2022: Evan Fournier, Derrick Rose, Alec Burks, Nerlens Noel, and Kemba Walker. These were some of the worst contracts in the NBA and he had to pay a high price to get out of them.
When it comes to his stars and their extensions, Leon has typically defaulted to their max like the rest of the league. Randle got a max, Brunson got a max, Bridges got a max, OG got very close to a max. If any of those contracts seem favorable to us it’s only because the CBA made it that way.
This isn’t about Leon, though. As Owen said, this is just the way. You either give your star his max extension or you trade him, like we just saw in Boston. The second apron should change things, but it hasn’t yet.

Turning Julius & Divo into KAT was a master stroke that brought in the final piece needed to get the team over the top but my guess is Leon views him more as hired gun than Knick For Life. Grateful as Leon may be for KATās invaluable contributions to the chip, I very much doubt heās Donovan Mitchell extension level grateful. If thatās what KAT wants, he probably will have to seek it elsewhere.
Far less clear to me is what Leon will do when Brunson inevitably comes calling for his Spida-like deal. If anyone has earned Knick For Life status, itās Cap. If sentiment were the prime consideration, heād get that deal in a heartbeat. But Leon doesnāt strike me as a particularly sentimental guy so I wonder whether heāll see sufficient basketball reasons to award a player on the wrong side of 30 a multiyear $70 million AAV contract.
The idea that any team HAS to give a player, even a franchise one like Brunson, 70 million a year when they’re in their mid-30’s is fucking absurd (caveat that it wouldn’t be absurd if the salary cap was much higher, but it’s not).
Brunson has already made close to 200 million as a player with the Knicks and will make another huge chunk of money with his next contract. We can give him 30 to 50 million and that would still be A LOT for a player his age.
Again, this comes down to how absurd it is that the MAX for veteran stars in their mid 30’s is way out of proportion to the cap.
Teams shouldn’t be forced to super overpay for guys at the end of the career just to keep them on their team so they can retire with that franchise.
So that guy gets involved again, and we lose again. Definite pattern.
Sad, but let’s hope it continues…

People thought Clarkson was horrible on D and then he bought in and was pretty good.
I think Derozan could work because he would be coming off the bench and playing max 20 minutes a night. That’s why I think it’s very hard to forecast how good he would be on defense because he’s always been a starter.
I do agree, however, that we’d be better off getting Lebron! I’m not giving up that ghost!
I don’t think it’s absurd. It’s there for the likes of Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Nikola Jokic, Giannis, and SGA.
The absurd thing is it’s been going to guys like KAT, Jamal Murray, Jaylen Brown, Donovan Mitchell, and Bam Adebayo.
It’s going to require a whole lot of understanding on KAT’s part to accept that things have to change in the apron era, and it’s going to start with him.
Kobe’s teams sucked the last few years of his career. Golden State Warriors have been play-in teams these last few years. Lakers have barely been playoff teams.
Denver is struggling to get past the second round and Jokic is still in his prime.
All of these examples to me prove my point. Giving that much money to any player when they are in the decline phase of their career is basically capping you as a fringe playoff team at best.

Doogie’s DeRozan post articulates some valid concerns. I love DeMar on the bench unit but his fit with the starters is questionable and if he’s got to be siloed like that it may not be a role he’d want.
So, Brunson did all that with a forearm/wrist injury.

That is why the CBA shouldnāt be set up. so that the maximum salary goes up for older players. I know it is set up that way but I donāt like it. The max should be the same for everybody.
As a side note the CBA is th3 way it is because of Chauncey Billups when he was union president and wanted to get paid.

Does music so old that itās been long forgotten qualify? Technically, itās not ānewā but it may as well be to most people who are alive now and completely unfamiliar with the tunes their great grandparents might have been gettinā down with.
Cos thatās the direction my listening habits have been trending recently. A few years back, I bought a wind up Victrola on a whim at a yard sale. Having nothing to play on it, I began searching for old 78 rpm discs. These are easy to get dirt cheap (or free) as no one wants āem anymore unless theyāre originals by Robert Johnson, Skip James or the other blues icons.
This opened up a whole universe of music which was totally new to me. Iām talking the 1920s-30s stuff that predates Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman and many of the other big bands that anyone whoās watched enough WWII era movies have likely heard. I started getting into 20s hot jazz outfits fronted by names like Fletcher Henderson, Jean Goldkette.
Many people are familiar with the song, āThe Very Thought Of Youā which has been covered dozens of times. Far fewer have probably heard the original 1934 version by the Ray Noble Orchestra. Just a wonderful recording, beautifully arranged, played, and sung. Itās far and away my favorite version of that oft-performed tune.

I’m a big fan of Geese and their record “Getting Killed” particularly, and Cameron Winter’s solo album “Heavy Metal.” The former is from 2025 and the latter from 2024. So, not brand new exactly but new-ish. Cameron Winter is easily my favorite young songwriter and his song “Love Takes Miles” is my favorite song of the decade. Beautiful song.
The solo album is quirky and weird and unique. The Geese album reminds me a bit of bands like TV On The Radio, The Strokes, Radiohead, and other “big” rock bands from the early part of the century. Would have fit in well in the early 00’s NYC scene. They’re Brooklyn kids. Have been playing together since high school.
New Boards of Canada album is pretty solid, not their best but another in a long line of fine albums. The Oneohtrix Point Never album “Tranquilizer” from last year is also great.
Jeff Tweedy’s triple solo album from last year has a lot of good songs on it.
You do realize KAT was the best player in the entire playoffs by BPM right? He did this in about 1/4 of a season’s worth of minutes. If he was only 2nd team, who was 1st?

Are we supposed to count on KAT being a DPOY-caliber C now? It would be awesome, but I’m skeptical.
For me, Leon’s career as a POBO really began in offseason 2022. Everything before that was learning curve stuff, beyond hiring Thibs (which gave him a sort of buffer against his novice-ness). At that point, he had a roster with “albatross” Julius Randle as it’s marquee player, a bunch of shitty vets on bloated salaries, and a bunch of scrappy kids with “excellent role player” ceilings. It was his self-created amateurish mess to clean up.
We can go over all of Leon’s moves and non-moves since that point and come to the following conclusions:
Leon has been very lucky.
-The best Spida offer he made would have crippled our chances if Ainge had accepted it.
-By underestimating iHart and signing him to a deal that capped what we could offer him so that he couldn’t compete with Presti, he lucked into KAT.
-He lucked into Jalen Brunson by a) Cuban being stupid, and b) Brunson blowing away EVERYONE’S expectations re: his ceiling.
-He lucked into Dolan pressuring him into firing Thibs (unless that was his call and Dolan ran interference for him).
-He lucked into a particularly favorable pathway through these playoffs
-He lucked into KAT having a ceiling at “2-way point C superstar”
-He lucked into OG becoming a 2-way superstar
Leon has been very resilient, creative, and collaborative
-He hired some of the best capologists, assistant coaches, scouts, medical personnel, in the business
-He let his product on the court do the talking for him, never gloating or whining, never taking credit or throwing anyone under the bus, never making excuses. I can’t think of another POBO/GM for any NYC team that has been as tight-lipped as him.
Leon is a genius in public relations
-Leon built a team and “below the owner” organization that, for better or for worse, has been a model of sportsmanship, camaraderie, and rootability. The Knicks are now seriously talked about as America’s Team. No one would have ever said that about the Riley/Van Gundy Knicks, and certainly not the D’Antoni/Woodson Knicks. You have to go back to the early ’70s to even think that. If Leon is in any way a genius, therein is where the genius lies…this team has transcended the hard-core NY fanbase. It turned the new face of the franchise into a villain, not just by beating him, but by doing it in a highly rootable way, with one of the most unlikely and rootable superstars ever.
Veesaarās agent said he wouldnāt accept a 2-way, which is part of why he dropped (that, and he sucks).
Iām also out on Reed. His vert looks like itās about 6 inches. Zuby might be ok but he doesnāt look like a center and still canāt shoot threes soā¦ Precious part 2.
In short, Iām not gonna kill Leon for passing on bigs late in the draft.
It seems like they may have been surprised Huk got an offer. They probably assumed he was their third C and didn’t need one in the draft.
I don’t feel like we missed out anyone, though. No one we could have drafted would have actually helped us this year.
KAT’s bpm is misleading. He’s been great, definitely superstar-level since game 4 in ATL. But he still has his limits. He gets fouled off the floor, often by his own misdeeds. There were critical games, including in the finals, where he was invisible for entire 4th quarters. He’s not a guy you can consistently say “give me the ball and I will go to work and get you points” in critical situations.
BPM-wise, he was at the level of OG…except OG played 5 more MPG in the finals, including 16 more in game 4 and 10 more in game 5. It was OG who made big play after big play after big play on both ends throughout the playoffs, including in 4th quarters.
If anyone on the team deserves a supermax contract as well as Brunson, it’s OG. And clearly, all three aren’t getting one. If KAT isn’t wiling to take much less than the max (say, $45-50M AAV for 3-4 years), I’d be looking to trade him before it gets to a Jaylen Brown situation.

They were upheld on review, or not even challenged. The stupid hook move is a staple in KAT’s repertoire. So is the silly reach. So is the bump on the fake.

He was egregious in the Sixers series. He averaged 4.5 fouls per game and was limited to just 23 mpg.
Z, Leon’s biggest stregth is his ability to talk to every GM and keep his mouth shut. No one knows what he’s thinking or simmering in the back burner.
Gersson made the KAT trade ready for many months…Leon sat on it becuase he didn’t want to include DDV. That’s a good example of no one saw it coming even though it was literally just waiting for him to pull the trigger…Josh Hart trade even caught Brunson by suprise. No one saw OG or Mikal trades coming either.
Lastly, he played the Brunson situation @ Pat Riley level. Hiring Rick was gangsta. Sold Jalen on having his own shop too. Left nothing to chance. Cuban had no shot.
Every GM knows that you can always call Leon because he is direct, negotiates in good faith and most importantly keeps everything confidential. Just dont call in the afternoon while he’s taking naps…

They didn’t review the “stepped into landing area” call since it was moot, but the main issue is that it wasn’t even called as a foul, which I have faith that it would have been upheld had it been reviewed/reviewable. The other call was at least ruled a foul on the floor. Anyway, we’re debating whether the KAT foul calls and non-calls are legit ot not. Seems like whenever a coach calls for a review on KAT, it either gets upheld if it is one or overturned if it isn’t one, and rightfuly so. As to, does KAT get a lopsided whistle in general, that’s a different conversation. I think his ability to play through contact without showing it hurts him (see: Melo) in that regard, he also flops quite a bit but too obviously, and his whining about getting fouled on every play doesn’t help.

Also, KAT only played 23 minutes a game vs. Philly but considering it was a 4 game sweep, feels like this average is deflated a bit because we dominated them so much.
We blew them out in games 1 and 4. I’m sure KAT would have played more minutes in those games if they were closer.

Come on, swifty. Itās common knowledge that KAT is foul prone relatively speaking. No reason to argue that. Heās still an elite player.
The biggest issue with KAT is that he gets targeted on D, making him even more foul prone. He got better on D in the playoffs, but foul-proneness is still an issue, and on both ends. He is prone to hooking defenders and moving on screens.
Hart – 35 mpg
Brunson – 34.5 mpg
Mikal – 32.5 mpg
KAT – 23 mpg

He also had 5 fouls twice against Atlanta and 4 fouls three times against Cleveland.
And these were mostly non competitive games where he didnāt have to play 4 quarters.

There seems to be an underlying message right now to every player that wants to be part of the Knicks going forward. If you want to stay here, at some point, youāre going to have to take less than you are worth.
It seems like Dolan, by insisting on staying under the second apron, is sending that message to the starters as well. Leon is the messenger, and is free to negotiate as he sees fit, under that decree.
KAT will be the most telling test case for whether this is in fact, true. Mitch was more like the canary in the mine. Meaning, it doesnāt matter how long youāve been here, how much you are beloved, how much you have done for usā¦ Weāre not going over that apron just to keep you. Allowing Mitch to leave sent that message loud and clear.
In a way, this makes life easier for Leon. He can just defer to the boss and say hey, Iād like to give you that contract, but I canāt because the boss says I canāt.

Agreed. But none of them were extended at the expense of going over the 2nd apron. That will not be the case the next time around. The point I am making is that Leon can pay guys whatever he wants, so long as the payroll stays under Dolan’s red line.
I’m not that worried about Josh or Mikal, losing either of them won’t be catastrophic, to say the least. OG, on the other hand, is one of one. There is no replacing him at his market value, and to risk losing him by offering him less than that is, to use a Dolanism, suicidal. He has a player option in 2 years.
It’s really all about KAT and OG. Will they take less to stay? If yes, how much? If no, what is plan b? Go into the apron? Trade them? Let them walk?

Seems like a better opportunity for him. Mamu seems more like a stretch 4 than a 5. He’s a below average rebounder and defender. And Kessler is going to have some issues as a young guy who has never played for a winning team and coming off of a serious injury…plus that contract and trade are going to add enormous pressure.
I’m not mad about losing out on Looney. I want someone who is:
1. Uninjured
2. 30 or under
3. 6-foot-10 or over
4. Can block a shot or two per game.

He deserves a lot more credit for identifying what the maximum upside could be and making the gutsy calls that those were the gambles worth trying.

I’m willing to grant that players remain productive for more years now than they used to because of improved diet, training, medical treatment and taking games off, but I think paying some of these players approaching or in their 30s based on what they are eligible to be paid vs. what they are actually worth is a huge inefficiency in the market.
I was never a Trae Young fan. I’m pretty sure I’m on record here saying I thought he might be an NBA bust when he was drafted. He wound up being better than I expected. Now I’m on the other side of the fence. I agree that he’s overpaid based on his contribution to winning and poor defense (a reason I didn’t like him to begin with), but I think he’s better than the consensus out there now. If he’s healthy this year, I think he’s going to be good. If he and AD are both healthy at the same time for at least awhile, people are going get reminded how good AD is when he is healthy.
I know itāll come off as churlish to register a complaint about a POBO who just successfully assembled a championship team, but the advent of Summer League reminds me of my one enduring gripe with the Leon administration: his continued refusal to give the fanbase young, unknown players to dream on and root for to blossom into NBA players (or not)
While hoping for titles will always be the #1 consideration, cheering for homegrown talent from the earliest stages of their careers has always been (for me, anyway) a very enjoyable part of the overall fan experience. Granted, thatās pretty much all we ever had as Knicks fans for years on end and current cap constraints & being at the crest of the win curve make such additions to the team impractical but, yeah, I sure do miss it.
Even before this team demonstrated itself to be of championship caliber, Leon wasnāt exactly giving us much on that front. IQ was probably the best of the (Leon drafted) lot and including him in a package that brought back OG was totally worth it and, yet, I grieved when he was sent out. Losing Grimes was nowhere near as painful but I didnāt like seeing him go, either. And now, it sure appears as if Deuce will be next – either as a trade piece for a big or future cap casualty.
So now, itās all about Mo. His promise shown as a rookie has filled me with hopes that will likely prove to be little more than irrational exuberance. My dreams of a Siakamesque outcome for him are probably more silly than not but, shit, I need someone to dream on and heās all there is at the moment. Hopefully, Nickel or Kayil (if heās cleared to play) will show enough in SL to take some of that weight off Moās shoulders.
So Leon, you just brought us a title and we love you for that, man, but is it too much to ask for you to add at least one more (cheap) unknown with promise to the roster for us fans to project our future hopes and dreams upon? Thank you for your attention to this matter.

My larger point is that ALL POBO/GMs need some luck and some 99th-%ile outcomes to build a champion. Leon has had his share, and so have the others who reached the mountaintop. Even the great Sam Presti has the 99th-%ile outcome with SGA, and let’s not forget he made one of the dumbest decisions ever by jettisoning James Harden, a move that set the championship calendar back 13 years!
Leon has done a fantastic job since summer 2022. There is no arguing otherwise. But his championship run involved some very good fortune, especially whiffing on Spida, which likely would have set him back years and maybe killed his chances altogether. Or maybe he would have pivoted, who knows?
Whatever, I am sure glad I kept the faith with him all along, although it definitely wavered a bit with the Mikal trade and the KAT-Brunson defensive pairing. And as I said, the changing of the perception of the Knicks side of things is a massive grand slam. I doubt that anyone else that Dolan might have hired could have pulled off the America’s Team” magic.
