    Well, that sucked.

Probably all that needs to be said today. I am hereby declaring this thread closed. Have a great weekend, everybody!

That’s some heavy shame you drape on your shoulders, gk. That game sucked.

I turned the sound off and only half-heartedly watched the second half, and I mostly play with +/- because it’s a goofy stat that amuses me, but it’s interesting that two characters stand out there — KAT with a -18, which seems right given he was a complete non-entity (3 rebounds in 22 minutes — really?), and Josh Hart, at -15, despite having normal Josh Hart boxscore stats (16-7-4, 7/11 and 2/4 from three). Only sad little Tyler Kolek broke double figures (-10). Meanwhile Mitch was the only positive at +8.

I’d say forget about it, except that this is yet another example of how this team doesn’t bother to take itself seriously.

That was a troubling loss because it was out first test in awhile.

    They controlled the game.

They were targetting Brunson at times and being successful. We are going to see a lot more of that in the playoffs.

At times I thought we were playing very hard on defense but their ball and player movement was so good, they’d get open shots anyway.

They were targetting Brunson at times and being successful. We are going to see a lot more of that in the playoffs.

The smallest player they start is Kon who is 6′ 6″ who is an elite shooter. It will be a clear issue in a possible matchup.

A lot of stuff going on here

    @ShamsCharania
The NBA presented three comprehensive anti-tanking concepts to its Board of Governors on Wednesday, with modifications expected to each before a formal vote in May, per ESPN sources.

    1. 18 teams in draft lottery (seeds 7-15 in each conference) – flattened odds, with bottom 10 teams having an 8% chance, the remaining 20% odds distributed in decreasing order for 11 through 18, and and a lottery drawing for all 18 picks.

    2) 22 teams in lottery using 2-year record (seeds 7-15, plus the four playoff first round exits in both conferences). Lottery teams would reach a minimum win total floor in each season, such as 25 wins. If a team falls short of the floor, it gets slotted to meet the floor. Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently.

    3) 18 teams in a “5 by 5” lottery – bottom 5 teams have equal odds for the top pick, with lottery formed for picks 1-5. Bottom 5 teams have a floor at 10; those that fall out of top 5 get sorted in a separate drawing.

Charlotte played a flawless game. It’s a really really good team but it’s a make or miss league. Let’s see if those young role players can make shots on the road in the playoffs.

First instinct. – I like this option the best.

Having almost three-quarters of the total number of teams in the NBA in any kind of lottery just doesn’t make logical sense to me on its face.

All they have to do is tier the league and flatten the chances within each tier.

Tier 1 – Playoff Teams (1-16) all get the same odds
Tier 2 – Non Playoffs (17-30) all get the same odds but higher than playoff teams.

Almost no team is going to miss the playoffs on purpose because of the extra money involved. If teams start showing that tendency, incentivize making the playoffs more with player cash bonuses and things like that.

No non playoff team is going to tank if their odds are the same in the lottery no matter where they finish.

It doesn’t get much simpler than this, it basically eliminates tanking and it preserves some element of promoting league balance because the non playoffs teams will still get the best picks.

If you make it too complex, the smartest guys in the room will almost always find a way to game the system and cause unforeseen problems.

I don’t think the game last night meant anything. The Knicks didn’t bring it, and that’s fine, they’re locked into 2-4 and who knows which slot gets easier opponents. I totally don’t understand the starters fighting to the end there. Just stay healthy for the next 8 games.

    1

I’m convinced that the Knicks are not going to sneak into the 2nd spot with this few games remaining (and also not playing particularly well, whereas Boston definitely is), and very, very convinced that they are not going to fall to the 4th spot. That’s a very long way to fall with single-digit games remaining.

    2) 22 teams in lottery using 2-year record (seeds 7-15, plus the four playoff first round exits in both conferences). Lottery teams would reach a minimum win total floor in each season, such as 25 wins. If a team falls short of the floor, it gets slotted to meet the floor. Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently.

i really like this one, creating a floor for win totals completely eliminates that odious race to the bottom

Almost no team is going to miss the playoffs on purpose because of the extra money involved.

we saw exactly that in 2023 – the Mavs tanked their way out of the playoffs in the middle of a 3-season run where they made the WCF and then the Finals

Maybe just go back to the original system, with all non-playoff teams having the same odds. Maybe increase the odds for teams based on how many consecutive years they have missed the playoffs.

I hate using the “but we were missing x player” argument when we lose, especially when it’s not a starter.

But I do think we’re maybe underestimating how much we’re missing Deuce and Shamet right now.

Those are 2 really good 3 point shooters. Deuce is (or was before Alvarado got here) our best perimeter defender and that is an area where we are a bit weak. So him not being here hurts. And we’ve yet to see the defensive magic of a Deuce and Alvarado back court. Plus Shamet is also a good/willing defender.

Both of those guys are energy guys too. I love Mo and his future potential and, obviously, he’s more of a 4 than a 2 or 3, but if you have Shamet and Deuce back, Clarkson (who has filled in admirably) does not play. Also, Deuce allows Bridges to not have to defend the POA when they play together.

If we have those 2 back and healthy for the playoffs, our odds do go up a bunch.

Charlotte is good, though. Kudos to them for putting it together.

I for one am definitely not underestimating the lack of Deuceness and Shamwowness. Although Shamet was not playing particularly well ahead of getting hurt, the mere threat of his shooting definitely changed the ways in which other teams had to defend against us.

    1

The Hornets have looked good. They really space the floor well. The one things they have is a lot of different players that can handle the ball and create on their own.

I feel like the Knicks have been missing this key element for a full year. It especially shows up in the playoffs when teams pick Brunson up full court.

Regardless of what happens in the playoffs, I think the Knicks need to get some more players who can handle the ball/bring it up, and create shots for themselves or others.

    2

Of course, it’s too late to get anyone who fits that bill now, and if we don’t at least get to the Finals, there’s a decent chance they blow the whole thing up and our configuration will look different, anyway.

Doesn’t Clarkson kind of do that? Clarkson only a (-) 1 yesterday, but only 8 minutes

Took a look at past box scores. Deuce has frequently been the primary defender on Lamelo, and seems to have done very well on him. A lot of that is Deuce being ushered into the starting lineup due to injuries to Brunson or Anunoby. But it looks like missing Deuce is a real thing against Charlotte.

Of course, who knows how healthy Lamelo was in any of those games or how healthy Deuce will be if they meet in the playoffs.

brunson is a weakness against a lineup like charlotte’s but we’re not going to lose because of miles bridges posting too much on jalen brunson if competence otherwise prevails. our reaction to that situation last night was pretty close to u16 quality, as we either ignored the mismatch with zero help or ambled over at half speed to obviously double with zero cat and mouse from the helper or the off ball defenders.

we really played some beautiful offense early on, helped by some hornets communication problems on d and by remembering that throwing lobs to mitch is a legal basketball play, but they patched some of that pretty well and we started devolving into our weave to nowhere mode. i thought kat was legit horrendous on both ends last night despite a completely innocuous boxscore.

sorry but this idea is actually awesome?

Someone suggested this lotto reform to me a few months ago and I can’t stop thinking about it:

Hold a draft pick draft after every season. Teams can’t draft themselves, but they can draft the selections from any of the other 29 teams. Worst record drafts first and so on.

Basically teams are trying to guess who will be the worst teams in the league in the upcoming season. Bad teams still get the best chance to improve because they pick early, but have less incentive to tank because their pick in the immediately upcoming draft isn’t tied to their own record. You can even get frisky and create some sort of incentive structure where the teams that over-perform the most gain spots in the following “pick” draft.

Would be some complications with picks that have already been traded and the trading of future picks, but nothing they can’t get around.

    1

last night felt more like a showcase for how well the hornets are playing, as opposed to our knicks being on a season long journey to nowhere…

plus you know, all of what milo said…

i really like this one, creating a floor for win totals completely eliminates that odious race to the bottom

But wouldn’t it all but guarantee that the “bottom 4” will continue their fuckery to retain such vaunted status? Teams 5 & 6 will also try and pull some nonsense until it’s clear they won’t be able to bottom out.

Not my take but Bomani Jones has been saying for years that the best approach is to eliminate the draft entirely and make all of the eligible players free agents. Teams in the lower tier simply obtain the most cap space to pay these kids and the first X amount of years wouldn’t count against the teams overall cap. In an ideal world they would also get graded to ensure a team can only have so many high value players on the team at one time. If a team strikes out on top tier talent then any unspent amount would carry over – only to the following year.

These kids have proven time and again by jumping into the transfer portal or by chasing the most NIL money that they’ll literally play anywhere. There are only 30 locations in the NBA and I don’t see anyone turning down a 20M contract to play in Sacramento vs 2M to play in NYC.

This way the league has the best of both worlds – a way for shitty teams to improve while disincentivizing losing to the degree that we see now. Think of the “signing” day show and how much more exciting that would be than the current draft.

Hell, the more I think about it this also eliminates all this pick protection nonsense. At best they would allow teams to trade portions of their signing space or all of it. As long as they don’t allow them to tie the portions to the amount of wins then it would be a solid approach.

But wouldn’t it all but guarantee that the “bottom 4” will continue their fuckery to retain such vaunted status? Teams 5 & 6 will also try and pull some nonsense until it’s clear they won’t be able to bottom out.

The theory would be that losing would cause them to have a worse pick that year.

If all the bad teams pick accurately, they’re directly causing themselves to have a worse pick. Of course, the team that would have taken Charlotte’s pick this year has an incentive to tank.

It’s not perfect but it would disincentivize tanking.

As were the uniforms. And the combination was quite ghastly. No wonder we lost—we couldn’t see them!!!

No way in hell NBA does anything like abolishing the draft entirely and/or making all players free agents. It’s even less likely than Victor Wembenyama demanding a trade to the Knicks on July 1 and us assuaging that demand by trading Trey Jemison III for him straight up.

The theory would be that losing would cause them to have a worse pick that year.

I get that a win floor would be established but, unless my dense ass is missing something, doesn’t this line ensure that at least 4 teams would continue their sucktitude:

“Top 4 drawn as part of lottery, as is currently”

Hell, just give the team with the 16th-best record the first pick in the draft, the team with the 15th-best record the second pick in the draft, the team with the 17th-best record the third pick in the draft, the team with the 14th-best record the fourth pick in the draft, and so on. It rewards teams for being average (not awful and not great), and how much fun would it be to see all the teams in the middle jockeying for that position?

No way in hell NBA does anything like abolishing the draft entirely and/or making all players free agents.

You’re probably right Doogie but, with gambling money pouring in from everywhere, Silver has never had more pressure to address this issue. It’s a fucking joke that he’s more concerned about the impact on Draft Kings versus the consumer/product. These teams will continue to find ways to gain an advantage and the money will suffer. The idea that losing is how to ultimately do that must be solved.

Not that it matters in the grand scheme but other talking heads have theorized abolishing it as well. Shoot, Stan Van Gundy was just talking about this very approach the other day.

“Stephen A. on tanking in the NBA: It’s on the owners to care”

I can’t stand the guy for long enough to see what he has to say here, but based on the title I can’t say that I disagree with the premise.

I don’t understand why it’s so complicated to make teams want to not lose.

passed the breathalyzer, wisely refused urine test…think there would need to be some kind of injuries in order for them to get a warrant to draw blood…

he’ll move past this pretty quick, but yeah, dude sounds like he’s all zombied out with meds cruising around out there on the road…yikes…

hopefully realizes having someone else do the driving is probably gonna help keep himself and others alive a little longer…

I think he might be able to afford a driver (no pun intended).

I don’t think you truly appreciate the challenges of having a $billion dollars, an impossibly hot Swedish wife, and generational talent at your chosen sport. Cut the brother some slack.

He hasn’t been married to that Swedish woman for quite a long time now. He’s been with a Trump relative more recently. At least that’s what I think I know, but I don’t follow that closely.

reminds me a bit of a story I came across some time back…it was about nicolas cage getting picked up for public intoxication somewhere in florida…

I think he was like passed out somewhere on some street…

all I could think was how in the world can someone so famous be in such a bad spot like that…

substance abuse and the art of self medication don’t seem to much care about your bank account or level of public recognition…

it’s just the truth – no one gets out alive…

looks like they got his blood back in 2017 because they found him unconscious, one of the few pre-conditions for involuntary toxicology screening…

not to be too critical, hard to imagine this will be that much a wake up call for him…hopefully he relents and allows himself to be driven, if he’s still inclined to stay stoned a bunch…

shoot, nowadays he could just get himself a robo driver or something…

    let HAL have the wheel…

No alcohol detected. What got him in trouble is not submitting to urinalysis. At least that is my understanding of the situation currently. I could be wrong about something.

brunson is a weakness against a lineup like charlotte’s but we’re not going to lose because of miles bridges posting too much on jalen brunson if competence otherwise prevails. our reaction to that situation last night was pretty close to u16 quality, as we either ignored the mismatch with zero help or ambled over at half speed to obviously double with zero cat and mouse from the helper or the off ball defenders.

I’m not buying that it’s not an issue.

When teams are very close to equal like in many playoff matchups, exploitable weaknesses get exploited. Maybe we did a horrible job last night, but no way I’m going to dismiss it. We have two guys to target, IMO the best teams will target them and gain some incremental advantage, however small, that worries me if it’s a tough series on paper. Maybe we are better than Charlotte by enough to get past them anyway but I’m not confident about that. The only teams I feel confident we can beat are Toronto and Atlanta. I’m not even confident about Orlando (if they get Wagner back or Miami). If Embid and George are healthy I want no part of the 76ers.

probably sad that it’s of this much interest to me, can’t imagine them being able to (or maybe even wanting to) get a warrant to dig in to whatever wild pharmacology cocktail woods has floating around in his system…

hopefully an opportunity to reset, he brings a lot of people joy/distraction…hope even harder someone snatches his keys away…

Other than when he’s acting and selling fake emotions for entertainment purposes to create good TV, – Steven A. Smith has a good head on his shoulders. After watching him on Bill Maher tonight, – I really think that he will have a legit presidential run. Could easily be our next president.

Cyber, he played so well that had St. John’s won, he would have been a major hero.
