It’s really nice to have the NBA back!

I don’t have many takes after the first preseason game outside of Shamet and Kolek interesting performances and our desuetude, as fans, about having a center that is able to spread the floor (the Achiuwa/Sims lineup is quite different uh?).

The starting-5 will need more than 5 preseason games to really gel, but it should be fun.

Note: James Nnaji, our recently acquired draft & stash lottery ticket, made his seasonal debut with Girona, scoring 6 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in 17 minutes. His post surgery rehab is over.

By the way, the recent Hollinger and Duncan podcast reviews the cap mechanics of the trade and why Charlotte has to send us Nnaji. I found it interesting.

    Good to hear

Everyone, please keep this in mind when the inevitable scorching hot takes start getting posted after the first 5 games.

Everyone, please keep this in mind when the inevitable scorching hot takes start getting posted after the first 5 games.

    no

I didn’t hop on the thread yesterday, so…I has question..

First preseason game aside- how do we feel about the way Achiuwa played? He looked to me like he’s ready to be that player that people thought he’d be when Miami drafted him 20th. I’m not really concerned about the starters- I’m watching the rest of the roster.

    What I saw:
    1. Sims is moving really well and rebounding in traffic. I like that. But he still seems a tick slow processing on defense. He’s still so athletic that he’s just bouncing everywhere and not focusing on drop coverage and really protecting the rim. If Thibs gives him the Hartenstein treatment in practice and makes him a better paint presence, he’ll be great backing up KAT & Achiuwa.
    2. I can’t remember a time where Shamet was that aggressive. I like it.
    3. Cam Payne is the world’s greatest frontrunner lol. When things are going great, he looks good. But in normal or worse circumstances, he looks pedestrian. That said- with the way the bench played, Payne looked like a first rounder. Keep it up.
    4. I want to see Warren with the 2nd unit so bad. I particularly want to see him on the floor with Kolek. Speaking of..
    5. Kolek is a great table setter at minumum. Won’t be long before he takes Payne’s minutes

By the way, the recent Hollinger and Duncan podcast reviews the cap mechanics of the trade and why Charlotte has to send us Nnaji. I found it interesting.

Any chance you can summarize? I’m back in Frank’s hospital for minor procedure and reading is easier than listening.

Alan, bro, we gotta get you healthy for this year’s title run…

Deuce looked like he was in mid-season form yesterday. He deserves a shot at the starting SG job.

Ess-dog, I think Hart is an ideal fit with the other four starters, but good to see Deuce still firing away and hitting. Also, this from Benjy Ritholtz was funny:

    If history tells us anything,

Folks will be clamoring for more playing time/starts for McBride and Kolek for another year or 2 (with sound arguments!), it’ll be Twitter WW2, and then both will get traded for Trey Murphy III and everyone will be happy.

Sims — I was super pleased to see him rise up and dunk a rebound. He seems to get knocked around and blocked when he tries to lay it in, so he should be fierce more often, with his extraordinary up-and-down hops.

It was funny to see Deuce imitating Duane Washington with the irrational confidence shooting. Although a lot of them went in, which was nice (a part of me has been worriedly wondering if last year was something of an outlier).

Shamet looked for real. So did Kolek. He has a passing skill that I’m not sure anyone else on the team has. Plus it looks like he has an NBA shot. He’ll go through crap periods because rookie, but it seems the bet is when he becomes a part of the rotation, not if.

Alan, bro, we gotta get you healthy for this year’s title run…

Yeah, minor procedures are what the off season is for. Was expecting you fully healthy for training camp.

Starting Deuce honestly makes a lot of sense. It does make for a smallish back court but it truly allows us to play 5 out with the starting line up.

    Brunson/Payne/Kolek
    Deuce/Shamet
    Mikal/Hart
    OG/Precious
    KAT/Sims

This is a much more logical 10 man rotation with everyone basically playing their (almost) natural positions.

Josh can play that 6th man energy role he does so well. You get shooting with Payne and Shamet. You have some size with Precious and Sims and you aren’t forcing Precious to be a back u center.

Any chance you can summarize? I’m back in Frank’s hospital for minor procedure and reading is easier than listening.

just that the touch rule meant that the hornets didn’t have a ton of options besides nnaji to send the knicks, since they don’t have many shitty seconds, were getting cash, and the nba has cracked down on fake touches like a top 55 protected second or the rights to tyler harvey.

    Problem 1:
Can’t sign 1 large deal to use as S&T because Base Year Compensation kicks in if there’s a 20% raise

    Solution:
Sign 3 players to smaller deals

    Problem 2:
    Minimum salaries are not aggregated

    Solution:
Sign players to $1 over minimum.

    (3) Duane Washington already signed to foreign deal

    Solution:
Organize buyout and return to FIBA, which requires about 1 week including time for league paperwork by NBA and FIBA. Complete before Duane’s team starts big games, send them ~$800k

    (4) Must fit players onto roster without cutting real player

    Solution:
Complete prior to season using expanded training camp roster (both CHA & NY)

    (5) S&T players must have 3yr deals

    Solution:
Only 1st year guaranteed. Knicks send ~$7M to cover the guaranteed salaries.

    (6) Every team must send asset to every other team in 3-way trade

    Solution:
Charlotte sends Nnaji’s rights to Knicks. MIN sends lesser of 2 teams 2nd rd picks.

(Charlotte had one old 2nd round stash they were skeptical would be approved and decided to hold future 2nds. Can’t be protected top-55 or some BS asset)

    (7) CHA had no cap space

    Solution:
New MLE as trade exception rule (first time used)

Podcasters pitch ways for league to crackdown:

    (1) No S&T guys previously on 2-way deals
    (2) No S&T guys already signed overseas
    (3) Require S&Ts to be $1M over minimum salary, otherwise count as minimum salary

It’s fun tinkering a bit with the Knicks in 2K25. I usually start Brunson/Bridges/Hart/OG/Towns, then my first subs are McBride for Bridges and Precious for Towns.

When Bridges has gotten a little rest, I’ll sub OG and Brunson out, and Payne and Shamet in. Smallball lineup, Hart at the 4 and Precious at the 5. Next sub is usually OG back in for Hart once OG has gotten a little rest. By then Towns is usually rested enough to come back.

When Brunson is off the floor I’ll usually look to Bridges as the primary shot creator, but I’ll also try some pick and roll actions with Payne and whoever is playing the 4/5.

Ok here goes. I can’t summarize it all, but some interesting points are:
They had to trade three guys to Charlotte because they couldn’t give more than 20% raises to any of them. A larger raise than that would put them into base year compensation rules.
Each one got one dollar over the minimum because you can’t aggregate minimum salaries and they all had to be players on the roster last year, not just hired for this purpose. They got three year contracts because those are the rules but the last two years are not guaranteed. Even so, they each get a 2.2M$ windfall.
The three sides of the trade need to touch each other and there has to be legal tender (I.e, real assets) going back and forth so Charlotte had to send something real to the Knicks (rights to Nnaji) and Minnesota sent a second round pick to Charlotte. It had to be a real pick and couldn’t be something considered worthless like a top 55 protected second round pick.
(Apparently the league is annoyed about this deal because they feel Minnesota and NY both being over first apron shouldn’t haven’t able to do this.)
Doing all this stuff meant they didn’t have throw in a player they wanted to keep just for salary matching purposes.
Why Nnaji was thrown in was the subject of discussion. Apparently other teams wanted him in their roster but Charlotte jumped in with the 31 pick and forced him to be a draft and stash. So why trade him if they really wanted him? Hollinger suggested that he wasn’t that good overseas after he was drafted and wasn’t that good in summer league. This may have made it easier to be willing to use him as compensation. Their alternatives weren’t so good. They were receiving cash so they couldn’t just send cash back, they could have sent an actual draft pick but probably didn’t want to do that ( they don’t have any obviously lousy second rounders), and they probably couldn’t send an actual player because the Knicks didn’t have space (and, my add, it might have messed up the salary math)., The league has tightened up the rules on who counts as a real prospect, so Hollinger was doubtful they could have sent a guy who was the 51st pick in 2015, it wouldn’t have passed muster.

They then discussed the trade itself. They (particularly Hollinger) liked it for Minnesota. Danny thought he would do it for the Knicks, but Hollinger wasn’t convinced of this

I hope you get better soon.

By the way, for those of you interested in hearing the podcast it’s one of their public podcasts and doesn’t require a subscription. I only listen to the public ones.

They had to do the trade before the season started because now teams can roster 21 guys and they needed the roster space. Also you can’t sign and trade players who aren’t on your roster so after the season started tge three players signed and traded wouldn’t have been eligible for a sign and trade.

Maybe this is Knicks ‘22-‘24 thinking, but I still feel like our optimal lineup has Brunson/Mikal in the backcourt with OG at SF. Idk if that means KAT moves back to PF once Mitch is back or if Precious moves into the starting lineup or something else. I’m just worried about the lack of rebounding, plus, it’s usually better to outsize the opposing offense.

That said, it seems almost impossible to have a single solution at the PF spot these days.

Edit: and yes, I see the irony in that I previously said Deuce should get a chance to start. Ultimately, we have a lot of good lineup options, so Thibs will probably start with one for consistency and adjust to his opponents with his first subs.

Due to another little rule, the Knicks will pay Randle’s 4.1M trade kicker, bit it will count against Minnesota for the salary cap.

The max buyout amount an NBA team can spend is 850K (Hollinger doesn’t rememeber the righ amount, it was 500K when he was in Memphis’ FO).
Partizan got 850K from the Knicks and 150K from Duane.

If you add the money we send the Hornets for the annoyance of paying our former minimim guys, it looks like the bill for the trade is over 12M.

They then discussed the trade itself. They (particularly Hollinger) liked it for Minnesota.

I think the Timberwolves are going to be great. They have a chance to show us what the January Knicks could have been if Randle hadn’t gotten injured.

Just look at how similar the two teams are:

    Brunson > Edwards
    Donte > Donte
    OG > McDaniels
    Randle > Randle
    iHart > Gobert

Hart & Deuce off the bench > Naz & Dillingham off the bench

I was impressed at the time, and I am still impressed at how the Knicks got Kolek. How the fuck did no other team want that dude at the end of the first or beginning of the second?! Morons! But great for the Knicks!

I think ess-dog and Hubie are right. We’re still a player away and that player would need to be a starting caliber PF who:
-Protects the rim better than Towns
    -Shoots better than Hart
    -Rebounds better than Hart

Any player like that brings a couple of major issues:
    1. He doesn’t exist
    2. We couldn’t afford him if he did

So we’re really in about the same position as we were when we lost iHart — not quite enough good players to round out a balanced starting 5, and not enough assets to get there.

I really think that not giving iHart that third year or team option will turn out be the move that capped this team’s ceiling at the ECF. I suspect that he really was about the 15th best player in the NBA last season like EPM thinks, and responsible for a huge chunk of our success the way Tyson Chandler was in 2013. Hope I’m wrong!

If we need rim protection without giving up spacing, the list of unobtainable players goes:

    * Myles Turner
    * Jonathan Isaac
    * KP
    * Horford
    * Embiid

    Highly unlikely players:
    * Tari Eason if he shoots better

If you can figure out the money & MIL blows it up:
    * Brook Lopez

If DET wants Mitch for some reason:
    * Isaiah Stewart

last season the thought of josh playing power forward didn’t sit too well with me…

having seen it in action, plus having OG around, makes me much more amenable to keeping him at the four until we have a center to move KAT to the four…

the issue with that though is KAT’s maximum value may just be him being able to play center…

man, that one long range bomb he shot yesterday was sweet…

the issue with that though is KAT’s maximum value may just be him being able to play center…

For max value KAT should play center

Getting a bigger PF should be the priority

Getting a bigger PF should be the priority

    Can we get Randle back?

    Jon Krawczynski
    @JonKrawczynski

Julius Randle says he’s been taken by Minnesota’s scenery and food scene since arriving. More open space like his native Texas.

“This is more my speed,” he said

This tracks with what his wife said last week, it seems like they got tired of being cramped up in NYC.

Once Edey proves himself at C in Memphis, I’d have to think Jaren Jackson might become available depending on who they want to play at PF. It could be him, but they seem to prefer him at C.

Jackson could theoretically be both our starting PF and backup C. That will take care of the rim protection issue. He can stretch the floor a bit like Randle to create a 5 out with OG at SF and Bridges at SG. We’d be HUUUGE other than at PG.

    Mitch + Precious + Deuce + ?

I’m not even sure I like it because his 3 point shooting is similar to Randle’s and he has some injury issues. So maybe all we’d be getting is better rim protection than Randle and a better backup C. But it’s another name that could become available at the deadline.

Jaren is an awful rebounder, but defensively would be a great fit with Towns. I also think Memphis would ask for Mikal in any deal with the Knicks.

Jaren is an awful rebounder, but defensively would be a great fit with Towns. I also think they would ask for Mikal in any deal with the Knicks.

That would be a non starter.

Personally, I think we are fine as we are with J Hart starting because he adds some rebounding, playmaking and switchability on defense. But if it doesn’t work I agree that getting a rim protecting 3&D PF is an alternative.

So we couldn’t afford Walker Kessler but we’re gonna land JJJ for a package centered around a replacement level player, a guy who is never healthy, and a decent bench piece?

I don’t understand how shams makes his employers money, I don’t go to espn to see what the trade is, I just read his tweets. I legit didn’t even know Shams worked for the athletic

Good for Shams. ESPN really needed to make that move.

in a real housewives fourth rhinoplasty touch up sense sure

    Mitch + Precious + Deuce + ?

even robert randolph winced at that one. they would legit think you were asking about gg jackson.

even robert randolph winced at that one. they would legit think you were asking about gg jackson.

    lmao

I guess the “+” would have to be pick swaps or whatever else we could come up with up.

I have no idea what Jarren Jackson’s market value is, but I seem to be underestimating it if Mikal’s name would have to come up. To be honest, if that’s the case I think he’s probaby overrated, but I could see him becoming available.

The Grizzlies do have too many PFs, so maybe we can pry one away.

    * Clarke
    * Aldama
    * JJJ
    * GG

I’m skeptical we could afford anyone other than Clarke. Mitch & picks might get it done, not that they need Mitch so there’d need to be a 3rd team. He also can’t shoot and even at 28 I’m not sure how much juice he has left with his value dependant on his athleticism.

He’s 25 and won DPOY two seasons ago while scoring 23.6pts/36 on a .613 TS%. Idk, seems like a hard guy to overrate.

We should get Clarke just so y’all can enjoy yourselves when I shit on him in the after-game thread and get flamed by Jowles.

Julius Randle says he’s been taken by Minnesota’s scenery and food scene since arriving. More open space like his native Texas.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Minnesota and really is an incredible place for like 6 months.

Julius is in the honeymoon phase. Let’s see how much he likes it (and is liked), when he goes 7/23, 5 turn overs, and doesn’t go back in D during a transition fast break while complaining to the ref, and then pouts on the bench. This is assuming the shoulder even holds up. He’s on the wrong side of 30, doesn’t possess elite hops, plays physical, and has a shaky J and handles. Good riddance.

I don’t have any ill will towards Julius. I hope he plays well in Minnesota. I wouldn’t bet on that shoulder holding up.

He’s 25 and won DPOY two seasons ago while scoring 23.6pts/36 on a .613 TS%. Idk, seems like a hard guy to overrate.

Josh Hart could out-rebound JJJ even if he was stapled to the floor.

So I-Hart is not going to start for OKC, it seems. He got his bag, but leaving a pretty good situation (and more guaranteed money) for this is kind of weak.

I don’t begrudge either Hart or Julius. Both flawed players who gave us a lot of great moments (along with some agita from Julius). I hope they do well except when they play us.

I’d rather watch a Knicks preseason game than anything involving the 2024 Yankees.

To be clear, I don’t ultimately begrudge I-Hart, he had every right to do what he did. But it’s a basketball downgrade for him, in my view.

“I don’t have any ill will towards Julius. I hope he plays well in Minnesota. I wouldn’t bet on that shoulder holding up.”

I think his shoulder will be fine. There are tons of players who have had significant shoulder surgery and came back essentially 100%…Kevin Love and our very own Jericho Sims, to name two. It helps significantly that it was Randle’s off shoulder and he’s not a pitcher, quarterback, tennis player, or volleyball hitter. He doesn’t have to worry about any loss of velocity, just stability and strength. He should be good.

Julius Randle has earned 132 million dollars in his career just from playing basketball, I’m fairly sure he could afford to live in a nice house in NYC if he wanted to.

Most underrated part of the Torre dynasty Yankees was the starting pitching, Kenny Rogers and Denny Neagle aside.

Josh Hart could out-rebound JJJ even if he was stapled to the floor.

Hart averages 1.1 rebs/36 more than JJJ for his career. IDK, I’d probably give that up for the recent DPOY winner.

So I-Hart is not going to start for OKC, it seems. He got his bag, but leaving a pretty good situation (and more guaranteed money) for this is kind of weak.

If the club opts out of his last year, he still has 2 years to make ~$12M. I think he’ll be fine.

Yeah, the game 2 starting pitcher unraveling has been a shitty October tradition for a long time now.

That’s 100% on Cashman and all the bums he’s signed.

I’ve spent a lot of time in Minnesota and really is an incredible place for like 6 months.

Yeah… It’s those other 6 months (when he actually has to be in Minneapolis) that are gonna suck for kids from Dallas and Lexington. People that think NY is cold in the winter have no Idea how relentless the cold and wind is in the upper great plains.

I spent a week every Christmas with my in-laws (my fife went to HS with Kevin Mc Hale and his wife). It is effin brutal when the wind is blowing and it is -17 on the thermometer and the wind chill is -40 for a week straight. That shit gets old fast, and I’m a guy who worked outside 90% of my life.

JJJ’s DPOY award was very controversial. The Grizzlies had a great team defense and he blocked a lot of shots, but he couldn’t rebound his position and was an egregious fouler. He is not the droid we’re looking for.

iHart had 7 assists in 17 minutes watching thunder games is going to be rough this year

That’s 100% on Cashman and all the bums he’s signed.

From Jimmy Key to El Duque to Pettite to Cone and to Wells, you could bet your life on better than a quality start 90% of the time. Then they backed that up with Mendoza, Nelson, Stanton and the incomparable Rivera, and the dynasty was easy to understand. Quality pitching beats slugging the vast majority of the time.

They won’t say it, but they wanted the live the city life and are now complaining and saying they wanted to leave all along.

Nah, they are just ingratiating themselves to their new fanbase.

As someone who has spent most of his career working in various parts of America, I can tell you that whenever you come from NY you have to talk about how much nicer this new place is than NYC.

Then, and only then, can you earn the greatest backhanded compliment of them all: “you’re pretty nice for a New Yorker”.

2003 Yankees had the best rotation I’ve seen with Moose, Clemens, Pettitte and Wells. All 4 SP threw over 200 innings and won at least 15 games, with the way the game is played today it’s pretty safe to say no Yankees rotation will be duplicating those numbers ever again.

When Brian Cashman forced Clemens and Pettite out after the ‘03 season so he could replace them with Kevin Brown & Javier Vazquez he showed us exactly who he was. It’s been 20 years of the same shit since then.

The only time he won without Gene Michael’s team was when he went crawling back to Andy. Without him we’ve never had a game 2 pitcher.

Grimes still can’t make threes and is a -12 so far.

Edit: don’t look at Hartenstein’s line though, it’s depressing.

Unfortunately I was born in 1980 so didn’t get to watch those Yankees Royals ALCS classics although I’ve seen plenty of highlights and old broadcasts on YouTube.

I find it hard to get depressed over a guy’s line in preseason game 1 vs. a team who is resting key players, including some guy named Victor something.

    The IHart clips are painful

At least we don’t have to deal with two Hart’s on the team all year

    4 pts on 2 for 5 shooting?

If you count Game 7 v the Pacers he now has 4 pts in his last 2 games.

Guys I love iHart too but KAT blindfolded with 1 arm tied behind his back will outscore iHart.

The only time he won without Gene Michael’s team was when he went crawling back to Andy. Without him we’ve never had a game 2 pitcher.

That and spending a boatload of cash for Sabathia and Tex….

The tallest players for the Spurs were the dynamic duo of Sandro Mamukelashvili and Nathan Mensah, both at 6’9″.

I loved iHart and will miss him, but come on.

Yeah I know that’s great but I’ll take a Center who for his career averages 23 ppg with 11 rebs while shooting 40% from 3pt.

That and spending a boatload of cash for Sabathia and Tex….

    And AJ Burnett’s “electric stuff”.

Don’t forget Cashman tried to kick ARod off that team, too. Boras went around him to negotiate directly with Hank, who overruled his GM to bring Arod back, leading to that WS win.

Yankees bullpen has been great. It’s getting harder and harder to not scapegoat a certain player. Golden opportunity in the 1st inning in both games and failed. He still has at least 2 more games to correct himself.

I’ve only watched the 2024 Yankees for two games now but I get everything Al’s said for the last 6 months.

George Brett gone off amphetamines may be madder than anyone in human history when he comes out of the dugout in the pine tar game, i’ve always been sad I didn’t get to experience that rivalry

boone ain’t the guy…cashman needs to be replaced…

my expectations are not so high when the yanks get to the post-season…

worse yet this post-season costas has the call on the games, not a fan of his, at all…

not sure when, but – there has to be some post-season during his career with the yanks that judge will be hitting well during it…

maybe we win it all again then…

There was a moment in the 3rd inning where I actually believed this team might be different.

    Yankees fans are hilarious

Aaron Judge is the best Yankees since Ruth or maybe Mantle. He’s had two bad games. It’s ridiculous.

Just had a brown sugar custard tart with coriander powdered sugar. Intriguing.

My brother-in-law was at the game alluded to in 1980 and said the transition from extreme crowd noise to utter silence when Brett crushed that ball into the upper deck was never paralleled at Yankee Stadium. I saw it in real time on TV and it was truly surreal.

George Brett was not the reason why Yankees took 3 of 4 series vs. KC during that era. He was literally larger than life. Not to mention that in that 1980 season he took a .400 BA into the tail end of the season with big power numbers, only to finish at .390. Of course, he was no Aaron Judge!

This isn’t a two game sample size on Judge.

“Aaron Judge has a .208 batting average in 46 playoff games”

Aaron Judge now has a career postseason BA of .206 in over 200 plate appearances. If you throw out the wild card games, he’s below the Mendoza line. There is no defending that. Postseason Giancarlo Stanton looks like Babe Ruth next to him.

Yeah I know that’s great but I’ll take a Center who for his career averages 23 ppg with 11 rebs while shooting 40% from 3pt.

    Why not have them both?

We couldn’t bring back iHart once someone decided to offer him a lot of money. Thats’s why.

Aaron Judge is the best Yankees since Ruth or maybe Mantle. He’s had two bad games. It’s ridiculous.

Judge has been a great regular season player, yet for some reason (sample size?) a horrible playoff player. Reg season = 3564 ABs .288 batting average with 1.010 OPS. Going into tonight’s game Playoffs = 175 ABs BA .206 OPS .756

    I have no explanation.

Oh for fuck’s sake… My point is that people are allowed to mourn the loss of a player they rooted for over multiple seasons and a hundred-plus games. No one said KAT sucked. No one said iHart is better than KAT. But please, continue to be dicks if you want.

I’m not sure that a love of extra fatty dessert treats in itself qualifies one as a foodie, but he may indeed be one. Either way, I’m certainly happy that he enjoyed it (or at the very least was intrigued by it!), and next time I’m out in SanBernie I’ll purchase two of them, and you can have mine, geo. 🙂

sounds like a plan doogie 😊

for you, and the treat, I vow to venture out of the home sir…

so cool you’re aware of the jewel of the inland empire: San Bernardino…

not a bad area actually, not so smoky now that the fires have died down…my only real complaint of the area is the completely consistently crappy air quality index…something about the geography of the area causes bad air (ozone issue)…

can’t have it all I guess, like a good center, and a good power forward…

Hart averages 1.1 rebs/36 more than JJJ for his career. IDK, I’d probably give that up for the recent DPOY winner.

Josh Hart is a 6’4” guy who has played guard for most of his career, Jackson is a 6’11” center. The DPOY notwithstanding, he is the Allan Houston of bigmen when it comes to rebounding — when he ends up with the ball in his hands at the end of a possession it is strangely noticeable — like, “whoa, he must have taken a Claritin before that shot went up”.

ess, no one is being a dick about iHart. Everyone here is sorry that he jilted us for more money, and there will be plenty of opportunity to read his boxscore numbers and weep. But preseason game 1 against assorted scrubs and dwarfs? Come on.

BTW, I i-hearted iHart a lot more at $9.2M than at $30M. Not that I’m crazy about OG at $36.6M or KAT at $49.2M, or giving up the most first rounders for a non-all-NBA player in Mikal, but since we’re likely to have a pretty fun team for the next 4 years, I’ll just have to live with it.
