Aside from adding depth, signing Shamet could also indicate a willingness to send another guard out in a trade for a C. Deuce?
I highly doubt this move signals anything. Landry is the new Shake. We’ll probably never see him, and it’s bad news if we do.
If we do guarantee the contract, though, it means we don’t have room under the 2nd apron to use the TPMLE unless we salary dump someone. So the whole Precious + [insert $5M salary] + [instert vet min salary] consolidation trade seems like it’s out the window. I think Payne, Sims, KBD, and Landry all make the minimum, so only one of them can be used.
It’s a curious decision. We had a couple of solid opportunities to increase trade flexibility (we could have given Cam the TPMLE or paid Precious more) but we opted to keep those salaries as low as possible.
Shamet is ok..serviceable. Decent end of bench depth and a good break glass in case of emergency guy if one of the rotation guards go down. But even then, he’s clearly behind Payne and Kolek- unless he has a phenomenal camp and looks like the 2nd coming of John Starks. I like the move because he’s a shooter, and thus should be good cap fodder for trades. Role-wise, Hubert is spot on lol. Still a savvy signing. And when was the last time we were able to use that word with decent frequency to describe the NYK front office? Even if Leon doesn’t share his thoughts often, he clearly has a vision that he’s earned our trust on.
The non-use of the midlevel is definitely curious. The only reason is if they’re saving it for a buyout guy, but as Macri has written, first apron teams are limited to signing only players who were making less than the non taxpayer exception. Which will be slim pickings, probably
I suppose we could waive whomever becomes our 15th guy and re-sign them to the MLE.
We could also save it to sign McCullar/Toppin/Hukporti to an NBA deal with a 2nd year if they look promising.

the tax is likely a big factor. being generally willing to pay the tax doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll up your tax bill from $17mm to $30mm just to add a $5.2mm placeholder you only hope to flip later.
Alan what are you doing in Binghamton?
You can stack minimums during two month window during the season, weirdly enough (December 15th to the deadline). So we can still theoretically cobble together a good amount of outgoing salary, but 3/4-for-1 trades are obviously hard to pull off.
Shamet is a perfectly reasonable vet min guy but I just don’t see the big picture reason why you’d want him around. On the other hand I didn’t see the point of Shake Milton at the time but he turned out to be a useful piece, so In Leon We Trust I guess.
I didn’t know about the two month window for stacking mins. That definitely makes me less curious.
I was in Binghamton for a Rod Serling festival and then for the unveiling of a Serling statue. https://www.instagram.com/p/C_8gm_6pN8r/?igsh=MXV3MnlsazJmZjdjNA==
Research for the book I’m writing about him.
Thankfully I’m not as huge a diehard Giants fan as I am for the Knicks and Yankees cause holy shit that loss today due to not having a FG kicker is just another low point in a decade filled of embarrassing low points since Super Bowl 46.
nice pic al…very cool statue…
although i will say – i’m a little more a fan of the pic with you on the train going back to work…that pic was pretty perfect…
you are looking very fit and trim senor – good work al 🙂
That’s a great loss for the Giants. I looked at their schedule last week and noticed they could easily be 0-8 if they get past this game. At that point even Old Fool Mara might be smart enough not to try to rally the troops for a 3-6 finish.
Agreed… The shame of it was Singletary and Nabors both had a terrific game and were the goats for fumbling and dropping that easy catch on 10. The Giants will never tank. Mara isn’t that smart, and the GM and coach would never survive.
Is I-Hart going to be cheered or booed when he comes to MSG?
Giants need to tank next year so they can draft Eli’s nephew in 2026!
I’m not sure Sims qualifies as a minimum contract. He makes very close to it, but it wasn’t signed as a minimum contract originally.
Marcus Morris also got a contract just like Shamet, I would think he’d have a better chance of making the roster since he’s a stretch 4 but don’t think he’s got much left in the tank.
He played great for us and made an economic decision every single one of us would have made. How could any Knick fan justify booing him.
