So USA Basketball was really close to making history? Your teams are so good that when a team make history it’s for the wrong reasons! 😛 😀

Alan, I look forward to reading your Twilight Zone book as soon as I have time… assuming my glasses don’t break first

“Alan, I look forward to reading your Twilight Zone book as soon as I have time… assuming my glasses don’t break first”

Why on Earth would your glasses break prior to reading Alan’s book, Early Bird Writes?

Looks like i can root for OAKAAK Toney Douglas again* !!

He should have been on that list of captains 😉

    Puccini or Wagner?

    Gibson or Fender? 😉

“Why on Earth would your glasses break prior to reading Alan’s book, Early Bird Writes?”

Doogie, this is a bit, right? It’s gotta be a bit.

Doogie, this is a bit, right? It’s gotta be a bit.

[Extremely fake Ron Howard voice] It was not a bit.

For the record (not that I haven’t clarified this a million times before), I strongly disagree with Strat and think it’s already clear we’re much worse off without Randle. The idea that we could Frankenstein his shot creation with OG and Mikal doesn’t pass the smell test.

The issue is not whether we’d be worse without Randle. Of course we’d be worse without him in a vacuum.

We’d be worse without any rotation player.

    We’d be worse without Deuce.

That’s not what I have been saying.

I am saying there is no evidence our starters would be worse without Randle given the addition of Bridges. In fact, the evidence suggests the opposite. We didn’t even have Bridges for our spectacularly successful playoff run without Randle last year.

In the playoffs we put Hart in Randle’s place. We made up the gap in rebounding and playmaking overall and he played better defense than Randle. That’s exactly what I predicted would happen and it did. The only question was scoring. We surprisingly got through the playoffs by upping Brunson’s usage successfully. We can’t expect to sustain that and I’ve repeatedly said that. But Bridges is an upgrade offensively over Hart and can he can also make plays. OG at PF is not going to rebound like Randle, but overall we’ll rebound fine. Almost all our players are good rebounders for their position.

We know Bridges can be highly efficient in a low/medium usage role like OG and we know he’s capable of creating and scoring more than that, but we don’t know if he can sustain high efficiency and high usage. That’s what we are going to learn when we have a full squad of quality players.

If Bridges can be a reliable #2 option, imo Mitch, OG, Bridges, DDV and Brunson will be a better starting lineup than the lineup with Randle. It will be better defensively and have better spacing. That means you can trade Randle for whatever gaps you need to fill and have a better overall team.

If Bridges can’t be a reliable efficient #2 then all bets are off. We’ll have to keep Randle.

Donnie, how was the sphere? Felt like after that conversation you should have been wearing protection. Or is this a twilight zone episode? This would make a really great start to one. “I’m in the sphere!”

There’s no “evidence” in either direction when it comes to whether Brunson/DDV/Mikal/OG/Mitch or Brunson/Mikal/OG/Randle/Mitch would be a better starting lineup because both lineups have played precisely zero minutes together.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the former had a better net rating this season, but if that happens it’ll be because it’s deployed selectively against competition not well-suited to exploit the relative lack of shot creation. We’re not winning 4 playoff series with a starting lineup that has one guy who regularly commands double teams.

That means you can trade Randle for whatever gaps you need to fill and have a better overall team.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. In the scenario you laid out all of the starting slots are full. Are we trading Randle to shore up the bench a bit?

Doogie typing “twilight zone glasses” into Google takes less time than spamming the board with your bad posts

Mortimer, what’s your favorite food? What’s your favorite color? And who’s your least favorite Knick nemesis/who’s your favorite?

Nope, Alan as usualy is correct. It’s not a bit. I have no idea why his glasses might break before having a chance to read a book. Mine have never done that. Granted, I’ve only worn glasses for a few months now, so maybe they just haven’t had a chance yet. 🙂 <shrug>

There’s no “evidence” in either direction when it comes to whether Brunson/DDV/Mikal/OG/Mitch or Brunson/Mikal/OG/Randle/Mitch would be a better starting lineup because both lineups have played precisely zero minutes together.

We know we can replace most of what Randle does well (rebound and make plays), improve spacing/defense and reduce a suspect Randle TO here or there. So it comes down to scoring and what Mikal, OG and DDV can do in slightly bigger roles with better spacing.

I have no idea what this is supposed to mean. In the scenario you laid out all of the starting slots are full. Are we trading Randle to shore up the bench a bit?

    1. Mitch is a question mark at C due to injury risk. So we may ultimately need to make a trade for a more reliable legit starting C. That would be the most likely move if Randle is traded. If the guy can score a bit, that would also help replace Randle.

    2. We don’t know if Kolek will grow into the backup PG role this year or ever.

    3. If DDV were to move to the starting lineup, we’d need a replacement scorer off the bench. I’ve already made it clear I think Payne is a negative two way player. He’s 3rd string.

These are the things we will find out before the deadline.

Maybe we won’t need to do anything. Maybe Mitch will be healthy, Kolek will fill the role after a couple of months, the spacing will be OK with Mitch/Randle and we’ll stand pat. I’m not worried about Randle’s salary at all. I’m worried about putting the right team on the court.

Good Julius complements this roster in so many ways. He is on a close knit winning team. Bad Julius was never about his ego–he is just sensitive when he or the team plays poorly. His skill set is versatile enough to fit right in and he certainly plays better when asked not to do too much (played better with JB, played even better with JB and OG, likely to play even better with JB, OG, and MB). The last thing I am worried about is his ego being bruised because of the nova crowd, not being captain, extension discussions, etc. The only concern is his ability to play in beast-mode post shoulder recovery. And that will probably take a few months of steady play to properly evaluate.

Strat, it seems to me you answered the question would a team with Bridges and no Randle better than the team that had Randle but no Bridges. You could be right that the team with Bridges but not Randle will be just as good or better than the other one. But the actual question at hand is whether a team with both Bridges and Randle be better than either of the two teams you considered.

Let’s trade all NBA talent to add more depth to our bench. 🤦‍♂️

“As usual,” not “as usualy.” I apologize for the typographical error. On too many screens at once. 🙂

“Doogie typing “twilight zone glasses” into Google takes less time than spamming the board with your bad posts”

Wouldn’t I first need to know that the whole glasses thing had to do with the Twilight Zone aspect of the book before I would even think about typing in that specific Google request? Well, *of course* I would need to know that. It was totally written without any context.

And I think that your posts suck, too. LOL 🙂

I can’t believe I spent 7 minutes mildly appreciating Joel Embiid yesterday. I need to be cleansed.

As nice as his points were, though, he was killing us with dumb turnovers and multiple Serbia offensive rebounds were the result of his laziness.

Which makes me wonder what would be more satisfying:

    A) USA gold

    B) A loss to France in which Embiid is the goat and becomes a national pariah.

I’m not that patriotic. It’s B for me.

I didn’t watch the game, but was it really a “heroic U.S. men’s comeback,” or did Serbia just get royally hosed by the refs?

Just curious how far Olympic corruption extends these days.

It was totally written without any context.

Doogie, since everybody understands the context in which comments are written in this blog, maybe it’s time for you to try to check if you’re in the wrong direction.

Radio: “Watchout, there’s one car in the wrong direction on the highway!”
    Answer: “One?? There’s many!!!”

    😀 😀 😀

It gives me some pause that ptmilo leans toward your position, Strat, but I still think it’s fundamentally wrong. We would be mauled by a big team like Minny, for example. And possibly by the Celtics, too. OG is great, but not the physical force and rebounder that Julius is – never mind the shot creation.

You can argue your position because we did very well with only Brunson at the center of the playoff heliocentric universe, but that was against inferior teams. We would have been badly exposed by the Celtics, even if everyone but Randle were healthy. The point isn’t to beat the Pacers or last year’s sub-standard 76ers; it’s to win a championship, and that road goes through Boston. Without Randle we don’t have a chance. It would take a top center or all-time-great power forward to do better.

Could there conceivably be a better fit? Sure, if Giannis wanted to come over. Absolutely, of Anthony Davis were to be traded for Mitch and peanuts. But that ain’t happening.

It really is that stark – there are few potentially “gettable” players who would offer more than Randle. Markannen, maybe. But we have Randle, so it would be smarter to figure out how to take advantage of his strengths instead of dreaming of some perfect player to come in through the Law of Attraction.

“Doogie, since everybody understands the context in which comments are written in this blog, maybe it’s time for you to try to check if you’re in the wrong direction.

Radio: “Watchout, there’s one car in the wrong direction on the highway!”
    Answer: “One?? There’s many!!!””

cybersoze, that’s very, very different, and you know it. Pretty much anyone would know in your one car example. (Quite honestly, it wasn’t a great example, as there would presumably only be one car traveling in the wrong direction, not many of them.) But knowing that the Twilight Zone book has *anything* at all to do with glasses would be something that only those familiar with the Twilight Zone would know. So let’s just say that it wasn’t the best analogy. Good try, though! 🙂

Lately i’m not into the CBA anymore, so i have one question for our CBA experts: Would we have a cap problem if we gave Randle a 40M AAV extension?

“Lately i’m not into the CBA anymore, so i have one question for our CBA experts: Would we have a cap problem if we gave Randle a 40M AAV extension?”

I can’t say that I’ve *ever* been into the CBA.

We would have clowned the sixers last year with a health Randle. The pacers too. We would have put a scare in the Celtics.

Ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with Vizzini for a day?

“Ever wonder what it would be like to hang out with Vizzini for a day?”

I don’t, because I have no idea who that is. 🙂

    bite me, Z-man

there’s a queue but you can wait for your platonic turn

If you can infer that there’s additional context to the statement, then the Twilight Zone seems like the intuitive place to start. It’s also okay to not know every reference or to assume I just need reading glasses in order to read books and it would be unfortunate if they broke for whatever reason they might break.

“It’s also okay to not know every reference or to assume I just need reading glasses in order to read books and it would be unfortunate if they broke for whatever reason they might break.”

Absolutely correct. It’s just not something that I would ever assume might happen enough to realistically state that I hope it doesn’t. It seems like it would be a very unlikely scenario. But I admit that I’d be speaking only for myself there, as I can’t imagine breaking my glasses. Sure, if you are the type of person who breaks your glasses, say, once a week, then it would be perfectly plausible to hope that it doesn’t happen prior to having a chance to read Alan’s book. Totally fair.

Dear Doogie (lowers voice to professorial measure, pulls broken glasses down nose),

One of Knickerblogger’s more pleasant aspects, at least to many of the board, are the often esoteric or arcane comments, and sometimes even random non sequitors, that get posted. Often they are of pop cultural significance, but sometimes historical, musical, scientific, and otherwise.

The non sequitors can be appreciated much like abstract art — one might just appreciate being taken out of the moment (e.g., the moment being the endless bickering about Julius Randle’s fit).

The esoteric references should be approached as a riddle, if you don’t immediately catch the meaning. As has been suggested numerous times (numerous times, mind you), Google is a great way to see if there is a relationship to the quip you don’t understand and the conversation ongoing. Don’t get it? Look it up, don’t post your ignorance.

If you still don’t get it, perhaps let it go. Roughly 95% of the posts that state “I don’t get it” or “This makes no sense” are yours. Nobody gives a fuck if some guy in Virginia doesn’t understand other people trying to be clever. Just let it go.

    Sincerely,

    Professor Raven

Raven who is Virginia? Is this a story about wolves, or about lost innocence?

I think rama says it best. Brunson-DDV-Mikal-OG-Mitch should be a very good lineup, and we might even be able to deploy it for long stretches of time. But at the end of the day it asks way too much of Brunson offensively to be a championship caliber starting 5, and yes, we would lose much of the rebounding advantage that fuels our success on both ends.

Which is just a roundabout way of getting us back to where we’ve always been on this topic: Randle is by no means untouchable, but if we trade him we damn well better be getting back someone at least as good at creating decent looks without needing an assist.

In other words, not a better backup point guard than Tyler Kolek or a 6th man to replace DDV. A better starting center? I mean, maybe…if the guy can create a damn shot, which leads us to the all-important “who exactly are you talking about” question.

I always operate on the assumption that those of us born between the late 40’s through the late 70’s speak a similar pop culture language. TV shows, from the Dumont network through I Love Lucy and Bonanza plus all the 60’s kitsch were endlessly rerun. We all saw them. Same with old movies, Little Rascals, Abbott and Costello, 3 Stooges etc. Even ads played for decades (Ritz Thrift Shop, tootsie pop). The monoculture was strong. If there were tiny music or gaming subcultures – we would get a whiff of them by the time we were in our 20’s.

That’s why KB regulars jump on missed references so hard. There was no social media. An Animal House quote or Brady Bunch episode is the currency that we all share.

Raven who is Virginia? Is this a story about wolves, or about lost innocence?

    … and there’s the other 5%…

Ouch. I guess I’m being too opaque even for context professors.

Ess-dog, it was pretty heroic. I thought for sure we were going to lose until we got that 6 point possession in the 4th. That was not the result of ref shenanigans, either. Jokic clearly (and foolishly) committed a foul.

darules, I actually almost blew coffee out my nose when I read your post. My 5% comment was a compliment…

We know we can replace most of what Randle does well

At this point, Strat, we can probably replace Bridges, Randle, or OG rather easily because we have Donte & Hart on the bench. It’s not like last year when we replaced OG with 42 mpg of Precious Achiuwa next to a center.

    “bite me, Z-man

there’s a queue but you can wait for your platonic turn”

Sometimes there just aren’t enough rocks.

    Or whatever.

Also, is it true that Randle has a 15% trade kicker? In other words, trading him might not be easy unless he agrees to waive it?

If that is indeed the case, it’s just another bit of leverage for Randle to hold out until the last minute to either accept or decline his player option. Which I would strongly advise him to do if I were his agent.

“Mortimer, what’s your favorite food? What’s your favorite color? And who’s your least favorite Knick nemesis/who’s your favorite?”

    Howdy, Clarence.
Favorite food: Don’t think I have a singular answer to this any more, but the first thing that pops into my head right now are soup dumplings
Favorite color: Blue. I’m basic like that. A beachy aqua/teal is nice.
Least favorite Knick nemesis: Voshon Lenard. Felt like he was always the guy to hit the shot we needed them to miss.
Favorite Knick nemesis: Reggie. Hate the guy, but I admire his showmanship. One of my earliest fan experiences was being in the Garden for 8 points, 9 seconds. I still haven’t recovered.

    How about you?

I love that Mortimer 1) actually knows how to spell “Voshon Lenard” correctly, and even more that he 2) actually does so.

Favorite food – bacon, sunny side eggs, sourdough toast butter. Last meal. I eat it everyday cuz, ya know, tomorrow is not a sure thing.

    Favorite color – psilocybin purple

Least favorite knicknem – Tim hardaway snr and his homophobic bullshit.

Most favorite knicknem – Pat Riley cuz he’s fucking awesome.

Edit – well not everyday but at least half the days in a month. Thats a lot of that.

Clarence, can your next project be a Clipped/Winning Time-style limited series based off the ’99 Knicks?

Sure, Mortimer! you and Randolph paying? I just got a script greenlit which I’m also producing(whew) and it’s very not Knicksy, and the next script I’m pushing hard on is a sordid exploration of the rise of fabulism considered through the heros journey… what about a gay basketball player who is the best player in the game for a minute or three? I’d like that story.

Bridges can create fairly well, but he’s at his best when he’s playing off ball and getting to the right spots on the floor. We have the personnel to use Bridges in his ideal role. As a third option he will be fantastic.

I thought “frocciagine” was derogatory. I guess it’s not?

The moment the pope said it every friend of Mary I pal around with assumed the mantel. I’m not sure it’s not derogatory but it’s not derogatory for me and mine. Meaning and all that is in the saying of it.

    This registers as a zero.

Definitely not; most assuredly not. And yes, I knew what you meant. People seem to like it when I know what other people mean. LOL 🙂

I’m not sure anyone likes anything you do, Doogie. I can’t speak for anyone but me.

I post about basketball plenty. I’m not the one who keeps bringing up other topics—many of you do. If none of you did, then I wouldn’t be able to comment on non-basketball topics or ask questions about them. This really isn’t on me.

And yes, people actually said that they want me to understand things both with and without any context provided, so you are abjectly incorrect on that one. 🙂

Here is just a small sampling of basketball-related posts that I’ve contributed recently. These are all from yesterday:

I hope that Deuce can continue his ascendancy into a full-time, reliable player!

In Deuce’s case, I believe it is something that he actually calls himself, and that he called himself prior to coming into the league. I might be incorrect about that assertion.

Gallo and McDermott are both pretty washed, at this point. An argument could be made that Bertans is, too…….although he never really offered that much in the first place. I’ll keep beating the drum for Skapintsev.

    So, you know…….

I don’t want one, especially not from you. But not from anyone, really. I’m just posting basketball-related content, which is what this forum is for, after all. I don’t deserve any kudos for that.

for the record, I enjoy chaos, and an odd nature…

today is not gonna be part of KB’s greatest hits…

it’s like having an off day at the house, and just outside there is constant landscaping going on…

just that annoying sound of edge cutters, leaf blowers and what not…

the two biggest wonderments from today’s conversations:

a). can those folks control their behavior? to what extent?

b). can those folks identify that they need to control their behavior?

prior to getting diagnosed with some stuff – I didn’t realize my health was way off…

I was so sick, I was unable to recognize it…scary stuff there…

“which is what this forum is for, after all.”

Dude, go back and read my earlier post. Don’t be the human leafblower.

(And geo, spot on as usual, but I’d switch the order of 1 and 2…)

I’m not that patriotic. It’s B for me.

It’s not particularly patriotic to root for the 27 Yankees against The Little Sisters of the Poor. That’s a bit of an exaggeration…. but not by much

Clarence, Dwight Howard was the best player on some teams for way more than a few minutes.

He really is. Both adorable and a troll. The man who could write perfectly but could not read.
