Just remembering how good the first season of the Expanse was. The rocinante was a great imagining of a spaceship.

I don’t know what “the Expanse” is; nor do I have any idea what a rocinante is. <shrug>

He’s a good guy. Just very Jon Snowy. What do you think of Lillard, Doogie? You think he goes quietly into the cold night? Or is he gonna bristle for the ball more this year? I don’t think he can play off Giannis and still be a top tier guard. Bucks should be trading with the hawks if they wanna keep Achilles.

And Clarence, I always lament the casting of the actor who played Holden. SO boring, in a show that was awfully good most of the rest of the time. I ultimately didn’t finish, mainly because he was such a drag.

Alan, I get that. Strait is is a difficult one. He’s lovely to look at and not untalented but as a rogue – a tough one. When Amazon bought it and dropped a ton of money on it I thought the show fell off for me but as an avid Wing Commander player space opera princess who still has nightmares about the pit monster in Enemy Mine that first season was fucking rocketfuel.

Thanks, Alan. Yes, I use Google all the time for things that I am interested in. Jon Snow, although certainly “look-uppable,” did not fall into this category for me, just as the one a couple of days ago did not.

Clarence, I don’t really think about Dame a lot. I like him, as I think he’s a good guy…….but time is catching up to him a little bit, it seems. The trade to Milwaukee was probably not the best way for him to go out.

“Bucks should be trading with the hawks if they wanna keep Achilles.”

Who is this in reference to?

nor do I have any idea what a rocinante is.

Rocinante was the name of Don Quixote’s horse in the famous Cervantes novel.

A rocin in Spanish is an old worn out busted up workhorse. Ante from Latin means before, so Cervantes used the name Rocinante to describe Don Quixote’s ancient companion as an animal who was so old an worn out that comically, he used to be a horse.

“An ancient Persian goddess named Achilles.”

What on Earth can a Persian goddess have to do with a trade between the Hawks and the Bucks? Please help me understand.

Thanks, BPL. I didn’t really care what a rocinante is, but I still appreciate the effort to enlighten me on your part.

Yes. At this moment, I have an interest in what is being conveyed regarding a suggested trade between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks. Nothing else at the present time……..well, nothing else at the present time regarding this forum.

Thanks, BPL. I didn’t really care what a rocinante is, but I still appreciate the effort to enlighten me on your part.

My old HS Spanish teacher Raphael Laserna 60 years ago would be happy…That’s how he explained why Cervantes gave the horse that name.

I know what Achilles is, so there is no need to look that up. I am 100 percent certain that if I *did* look it up, neither the Milwaukee Bucks nor the Atlanta Hawks would be mentioned, much less a trade between those two entities. So that doesn’t clarify anything for me.

    Google achilles

Is someone named Paris part of this trade? 🙂

Okay then. We are going to have to live with the stürm and drang of it all. Dang it.

“What is Orlando Bloom up to these days?”

I literally couldn’t possibly care less about the answer to this question. I care about this even less than I care about rocinantes or Jon Snow, which is saying a lot as I don’t care about either one of those at all.

I’m confused – what does League of Legends have to do with basketball? Please explain it to me, as I am resistant to nuance, context, and human cognitive processing.

Rama: what is “League of Legends”? Although I don’t care in the slightest, I must ask. Is it about basketball? Because I only care about basketball. Also, your Oxford comma is perplexing to me… can you please explain?

I have no idea what League of Legends is, and I don’t care and am not looking it up. 🙂

“Does LOL mean laughs out loud or lots of laughs?”

In my head, it was actually neither one of those options. It was “laugh out loud.”

There is nothing to explain about his use of the Oxford comma. It was absolutely the correct way to go there. However, I am confused as to why you called him “Rama” when he clearly prefers “rama.” (Yes, I know, I know. LOL)

Yes, that is exactly what I did, as I thought that you gasping at anything having to do with Orlando Bloom or anything else that you wrote about to be quite humorous. None of it seemed “gasp-able” to me, especially since I don’t care about any of those things and this is a basketball forum. I still have no idea what a mention of the word “Achilles” has to do with a suggested trade between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Atlanta Hawks, but I care about that a tiny bit because it is at least related to basketball.

The level of stress around where I am is so bad I’m binging Suits. Anything more interesting on Netflix? Ladyrules just got it for us.

    Things I loved recently:
    * The last of us
    * Baby Reindeer
    * Ripley
    * Eric
    * The Expanse (well, not recently)

“I’m confused – what does League of Legends have to do with basketball? Please explain it to me, as I am resistant to nuance, context, and human cognitive processing.”

Don’t worry. I’m relatively certain that you’ll understand it someday. 🙂

Baby reindeer was fun. If you enjoy animation Castlevania was really fun.

3 Body Problem, Beef both very entertaining

Beef was good. If you enjoy the printed word I’d recommend 3 body problem in book format first.

Dear Clarence Beeks: People around me seem to really enjoy the sound of my laughter, just as I enjoy hearing theirs. I’m not really sure how I would actually describe it, though.

I want to watch the rest of Baby Reindeer, but the first couple of episodes were actually stressful for me, so I bailed at first attempt. I will try again someday when life is easier…

Dear Downtown Doogie Brown : Can you please say to me, “Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!” And then laugh your laugh because I don’t think you’re Jon Snow anymore.

Hey Alan, thanks for sharing that list. Despite being a Netflix subscriber for a decade, I have never seen about 75% of those shows. Looks like I have some work to do this offseason.

“Dear Downtown Doogie Brown : Can you please say to me, “Never go in against a Sicilian when death is on the line!” And then laugh your laugh because I don’t think you’re Jon Snow anymore.”

I just did that for you, but you didn’t hear it because we are posting on a basketball forum as opposed to actually speaking.

Thanks for that list, Alan. Great work on your part – and good, too, to introduce us to shows we would not know otherwise. I’ve earmarked a couple. (Though I am sorry to say I have always been less enthusiastic about Bojack than just about anyone else I met. It’s fine…)

Also, Peter Morgan is one of the biggest shitbags I’ve ever dealt with, and I refuse to watch any more of his shows, even though I concede he is very good at what he does.

No problem at all. It only took about 10 seconds to complete that task. Who could truly say that they wouldn’t have time to do that, no matter how busy they might be?

Thanks Alan, great to have this list, I think I’ll try Russian Doll.

Thanks Clarence and DeMar. I loved the 3 Body Problem book, and the other two in the trilogy. Less so the series, although I did watch it.

Any other Sci-Fi recommendations? Either book or movie or series, it’s my favorite genre. The Martian is also very good, and Ready Player One. I also loved Altered Carbon, the book, but not the sequels.

Darules, to bring it back to the start of the thread, I think if you’re into 3 Body Problem — which was way too “hard sci-fi” for me, with no characterization to speak of — then you’d probably really be into The Expanse, which is on Amazon Prime.

Also, if you like The Martian, you might enjoy some of the sci-fi novels of John Scalzi, who has a similar tone to Andy Weir. Maybe start with Old Man’s War? His most famous book is Redshirts, which is very meta, about crewmembers on a starship who realize they keep dying while the bridge crew gets through missions just fine.

Alan, I watched all the Expanse series, considering watching it again. I didn’t like Old Man’s War, but you’re the 2nd recommendation for Redshirts over the other Scalzi books, maybe I’ll get it. Thanks 🙂

I didn’t read The Expanse books, are they good? Obviously I loved the series, despite the Holden actor.

I also loved Altered Carbon, the book, but not the sequels.

I liked the first season of the tv show, with Joel Kinnaman. The 2nd not so much.

    LOL

I wonder what will JK say after having to endure the first comments of this thread! 😉 😛

Re; Sci fi – enjoyed The Silo on Apple TV and currently into Sunny also on Apple TV, which has kind of a Black Mirror vibe

“Rita” is one of my favorite Netflix shows. Danish language – English subtitles, but very raunchy and funny.

hey guys why don’t you all say proper nouns and I’ll tell you absolutely nothing about each one I don’t know about

Yeah, i liked The Silo too. And Alan, thanks for the list. Just two comments about it, i don’t think i agree with The haunting of Hill House so low and somehow i missed Unbelievable, which means i have a new show to watch, thanks again.

Doogie’s shtick is humorless, dull, and vapid. As an added irritant, there is a lot of it. On the rare occasions when he talks about basketball and briefly stops pretending to be the world’s most severe Asperger’s case, his posts are perfectly fine if middling.

His goal seems to be to annoy the rest of us, in which case mission accomplished, but I think “troll” is a fair label here.

Discussing Jowles’ glutes = Knickerblogger’s salad days

Jowles glutes are everyone’s salad day

Love Canyon Barry shooting his free throws underhanded in Olympic 3×3 basketball. Hasn’t missed!

“Rita” is one of my favorite Netflix shows. Danish language – English subtitles, but very raunchy and funny.

I’m going to check Rita, thanks. I love scandinavian shows, and yeah, we’re used to subtitles here. Although in english i don’t need it, i always have it on in case i miss something. I don’t remember all the shows, but The Bridge (Bron/Broen in their language, as it’s a danish and swedish partnership) in the original form is great. Never seen Sofia Helin in another show, but on The Bridge she is outstanding.

Since we’re wandering off-topic today, I’ll just say how miffed I am that Lady Raven pointed out last night that “long tall drink of water” is actually partly stating that you find someone attractive, not just long and tall — which is incredibly obvious but something I never grokked to in all my years. So now she’s peeved that I keep commenting that the Olympic swimmers, both men and women, are attractive to me, despite my knowing that I’m not using it correctly, just because I’m so annoyed that I was so stupid that I have become stubborn and passive aggressive about it. Plus it kind of makes me laugh.

(Any posters see themselves in this description…?)

“(Any posters see themselves in this description…?)”

Not I (not by Samuel Beckett).

Project Hail Mary, also by Andy Weir, is a pretty good book.

3 Body Problem is one of my favorite trilogies. Netflix doesn’t live up to the books but it’s okay.

I watched some of Baby Reindeer with my girlfriend, but I couldn’t really get into it. I love dark comedy and cringe, but I just couldn’t sympathize with the main character’s plight–he acts in an incomprehensibly stupid way throughout the show. I realize that this is something that actually happened to Richard Gadd, but if it really happened this way I just find him to be a mostly uninteresting and oafish person. It’s not bad, however. I just don’t get how it has received so much acclaim.

I’ve been enjoying Ripley, it’s perfectly enjoyable middlebrow thriller stuff. And the cinematography and casting are terrific!

The Last of Us is alright, but I find the game’s version of the story to be better told–I think the show loses a lot in the corners it cuts/its lacking the environmental storytelling of the video game. The marvelous episode 3 of the show is excepted.

Otherwise, I’ve been watching the X-Files for the first time. Thinking about watching one of Poker Face, Irma Vep, or The Kingdom next. Or starting a Mad Men rewatch.

On a basketball note, looks like the game between Spain and Canada went down to the wire, with RJ nailing a key 3 down the stretch. I didn’t see it on TV here, Max, did you watch it?

For sci-fi books I highly recommend Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Children of Time trilogy. It’s not a true trilogy just three books that tell different stories about the world he created but you would definitely want to read them in order. Children of Time is the first (and best) in the series and each book tells its own self-contained story so you don’t need to read any of the others, or wait for another book that may never come, for a satisfying conclusion.

I haven’t read the Ancillary Justice series but I know it got a lot of hype when it was released and was recommended for fans of The Three Body Problem.

If you saw and like the movie Arrival I would highly recommend the Ted Chiang’s short story collection Stories of Your Life that contains the story the movie was based on. I’d also recommend his followup colleciton, Exhalation.

    1. Dougie and Clarence are obviously the same person. Through this lens, it is a hilarious shtick.

    2. The League of Legends championship drew approximately 30 million viewers globally.

League of Legends is a sport featuring 2 teams, each consisting of 5 players, so it’s basically basketball

Not every sport of two teams each consisting of five players is even remotely like basketball. I daresay that most of them are *not* like basketball.

“1. Dougie and Clarence are obviously the same person. Through this lens, it is a hilarious shtick.”

Who is “Dougie”? And your name reminds me of something that might be the name of a strip club. Do those even still exist?

Thanks ThisChicanery, I’ll check out Children of Time.

but I just couldn’t sympathize with the main character’s plight–he acts in an incomprehensibly stupid way throughout the show.

The Eminently, the way he responds to Martha, his abuser in Reindeer is why this series is so powerful and disturbing. He is actually seeking his abuse and encouraging it, while being semi-conscious to what he is doing to himself and still cannot set himself free, in part because he’s telling himself and maybe truly doesn’t want to hurt her. It’s his tragedy, and it sometimes happen to abuse victims. Heartbreaking.

Anyone watch Dark on Netflix? A German sci-fi show from a couple years back. The person who recommended it to me described it as “Lost”, but if they actually had it all planned out from the start.

Also, second EB’s Project Hail Mary rec. Fun book.

I can’t speak for “anyone,” but I certainly haven’t seen it. Haven’t heard of it before now, in fact.

Cobra Kai is the greatest Netflix show ever, William Zabka deserves an Emmy.

    Anyone watch Dark on Netflix?

First 2 seasons are great, they lost me in season 3. Did you watch the whole season 3? How was it? Should i finish it too?

Thanks ThisChicanery, I’ll check out Children of Time.

Well, this reminded me of a music…

Anything more interesting on Netflix? Ladyrules just got it for us.

If, like me, you have seen almost everything everyone talks about and need to dig deep to find something new, I recently got into Vikings and found it to be better than expected.

I’m almost all the way through Clipped on Hulu. It’s a dramatization of the Donald Sterling saga, and it’s pretty solid. No one in the cast looks anything like the person they’re playing, so much so that I think there’s a kind of kitschy quality to it that works.

Also, the actor who played De’Angelo Barksdale on The Wire (Larry Gilliard Jr.) plays Doc Rivers’ father! There’s, like, a 50+ year age difference in the two characters. Perfectly fine job, but that threw me for a loop.

I really wish someone would pick Pirates of Darkwater up and finish it. What a fantastic journey lost in tv shenanigans.

Vikings is absolutely awesome – it’s like the heavy metal version of Spartacus: Blood and Sand…not so surprising that the creative force for Vikings, Michael Hirst, also worked on Spartacus…

recently watched the 2 seasons of the Foundation series on Apple TV, really enjoyed it…

ALTHOUGH – holy shit, except for names and places – very very different story…

after watching the two seasons and being a little perplexed about the story being told, i pulled out the 6 Foundation titles i had…gonna re-read some of it – cause i’m pretty certain things are waaay different from the book series and tv series…

having said that – still very enjoyable…besides for the Foundation series i also had a chance to check out the Robot series (The Caves of Steel, The Naked Sun, I Robot)…

so funny how quaint the 3 Laws of Robotics seem these days…Isaac Asimov was an insanely prolific writer…within the same Foundation/Robot universe he also wrote a Foundation pre-cursor series: The Galactic Empire…

it contains hands down, my favorite book titles ever: The Stars, Like DustPebble in the Sky…and, The Currents of Space

Geo, for a couple of years I was working on developing a project with Goyer who did Foundation. Sadly, almost made it but couldn’t break through on that one. I love the foundation books. The Apple series is not my jam.

    @darules

Yeah, I recognize that his pathological behavior was caused by his history of abuse, but it simply didn’t ring true to me. For example, I have a history of abuse, but I couldn’t “see” any of myself in it—it wasn’t legible to me. While every case of abuse is different, I just couldn’t sympathize. And, because I found the other parts of the show—the writing, the cinematography, etc.— to be just fine, I was left mostly unmoved by it. It’s certainly better than your average Netflix slop but it never screamed “best show of the year” to me.

I’ve never heard of Pirates of Darkwater. I *have* heard of Clipped, probably because it’s at least tangential to the NBA.

“Favorite fun fact: hitters write large hit a lot worse against position players than Judge does against pitchers.”

    Huh? Hitters write large hit?

Can’t let geo’s comment go without highlighting the guy who I think has the best titles ever, repeatedly; the highly contentious but brilliant Harlan Ellison:

I have no mouth and I must scream
The city on the edge of forever
The man who rowed Christopher Columbus ashore
    Jeffty is five
    The cheese stands alone
    Repent Harlequin! said the Ticktockman
    The whimper of whipped dogs
Sleepless night in the procrustean bed
The beast that shouted love at the heart of the world
Djinn no chaser (with Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the version made for Tales from the Dark Side)

Lots more, but I’ll leave it there…

I’ve never heard of Pirates of Darkwater. I *have* heard of Clipped, probably because it’s at least tangential to the NBA.

Does this mean you’ve only heard about Portugal because Queta was selected to the NBA? 🤭

Thanks, Noble. Don’t care for the Yankees even a little, but always good to have help understanding amazing things happening in sports.

I’m sure I heard about Portugal as a kid, way before I was even paying attention to anything in the NBA. I must admit that I didn’t know that Queta was from Portugal, but I *do* know that you’re from there!

Given the rich breadth of knowledge here, there’s this sci/fantasy book I read a while back about a planet where a matriarchal bear like species rose to supremacy and eventually take to space. It’s like Darkspace or Darkworld or something. The heroine has magical psycho-kinetic powers fueled by dark forces. I loved that book and have googled my ass off but can’t find it.

The actress who plays Amanda LaRusso is my ex-girlfriend!

I second this. I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream might be the greatest title of all-time. Even A Boy and His Dog has a beautiful simplicity to it.

I don’t know, Hubert. I just checked her Wiki page and no mention of a Hubert anywhere on it.

Vikings is absolutely awesome – it’s like the heavy metal version of Spartacus

I’m a little disappointed Valhalla is ending before the Norman conquest of England.

The characterization in Valhalla leaves a lot to be desired but the source material (i.e. the history of that period) is so rich that I could easily watch two more seasons of it.

If you used to date Courtney Henggeler, and then you didn’t…….sorry, but you done fucked up. 🙂

And yes, I had to look up both the character and the actress, as I’d never heard of that show, either.

i’m binging Snowfall on hulu…just started season 4…i go back and forth on keeping on going but i seem to get sucked back in on some new twist….

I agree on Valhalla with Hubert…Vikings started a 10 and was good for a few seasons but once Travis Fimmel was done…it lost some luster…

speaking of sci fi and Fimmel…i liked the 2 seasons of Raised by Wolves…sorry when that was ended..

more sci fi—I see Falling Skies is on Max now…that also had a few good seasons before jumping the shark..

sorry, but you done fucked up

The summer of 1997 couldn’t last forever, Doogie.

Oh, OK. Didn’t realize you meant teenage years. Was she an aspiring actress that far back, or did she just fall into it later? I’m assuming that you’re not still in touch. :-S

So you’re from the South Shore.

I’ve been hesitant to use tastycakes’ Chrome extension but Doogie just says so much, yet so little.

I love how 100,000 mentions have gone by Doogie without so much as a google search but within two minutes he’s an expert on Courtney Henggeler and has correctly surmised where I grew up.

    Jon Snow? Nothing.

Amanda LaRusso? Let’s get to work!

Still trying to figure out how I should feel that M. Night Shyamalan’s new (and not well reviewed) movie “Trap” has a pop star as a somewhat central figure named Lady Raven…

Damn Hubert, gotta give you major props for that tidbit. I assume she was just as hot back then as she is now!

“And your name reminds me of something that might be the name of a strip club.”

The Dougster is the closest in 10 years to discover the relevance of my handle. And he doesn’t even goooogle. Go figure.

Still trying to figure out how I should feel that M. Night Shyamalan’s new (and not well reviewed) movie “Trap” has a pop star as a somewhat central figure named Lady Raven…

Just pretend you’ve never heard of it. I just saw it and its biggest problem is how much if the movie Lady Raven, aka M Night’s daughter, is in.

I’ve been hesitant to use tastycakes’ Chrome extension

Can someone please repost how to do this!

saw a late show for Deadpool/Wolverine last night…

thankfully the boys feel asleep after about 30 minutes…it was pretty over the top – even more so than the first two…

hugh looked great…and when you are engaged in presenting a very visual medium, looking great helps – a lot…

the team-up theme is definitely a big part of comics…

immersion is the key…i really enjoyed the movie, it is a very modern comic book movie though…

i’ve read some of the comic stories from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s…i read and collected a bunch from ’95 to ’05…i remember stopping with the continuity storylines of the main marvel characters by ’07 or so…

prior to ’07 or so the covers of comics would hint at violence…like sex, it would very sparsely appear within the book itself…

i remember peeking in on the Old Man Logan books, it was pretty gruesome stuff…

stuff changes, that’s just what happens…real fun movie though…love doing late shows with the kids…got a bunch of cool house shoes, the boys have onesies, i got one coming soon – it’s scully, ordered these cool paw things for my feet to go with it…

figure if i’m gonna spend so much time hanging with the kids, might as well have fun too…did a water slide the other day…yeah, sometimes it’s okay to leave the house…

i have the Onslaught comics where the main villain in the movies originates from…it was definitely a confusing/not so great storyline back then…they portrayed the character well in the movie…

still waiting to see Nathanial Essex up on the screen…
