I assume you had them on crostini as an appetizer… what was your entree? I live a few blocks from there.

You assume correctly, though it is listed as a snack. It also came with butter, parsley, and red onion.

I had the warm summer vegetables as my app and their grass fed beef and ricotta meatballs with polenta as the main.

I eat there all the time and strongly recommend it. Sit at the bar and chat with Eric; he’s an excellent host.

In one of the links above, it is pointed out that Vertsberger brought up the possibility of trading Precious, Deuce and trade exceptions from the OG trade for either Brook Lopez or Clint Capela. Are those kinds of packages even possible?

If they were, I’d probably go for Lopez over Capela because he is more of a counterbalance to both Embiid and KP. But I don’t think the Bucks do that deal, it seems that they’d be better off just rolling with him.

There is also a link that discusses Lonnie Walker as a possible minimum depth piece. Not sure he can’t get more than that somewhere else, but he’d be a nice pickup as an emergency SG/SF.

Are those kinds of packages even possible?

It’s not. We’ve lost access to all of our previous trade exceptions, between some of them expiring and us going over the first apron.

Even if we had trade exceptions it wouldn’t be possible. Trade exceptions can’t be combined with other exceptions or with player salary to trade for a player with a larger salary. If you have a $10M trade exception you can only trade for a player whose contract fits into that exception.

In general the media’s understanding of the CBA is pretty atrocious. I’ve given up on all but a handful ever understanding

Yeah, I remember that being gone over here before, and that’s why I am surprised that a supposedly smart guy like Vertsberger would suggest that it was even possible, as he did here.

Maybe there is a lack of urgency in terms of time frame, but the need is pretty freaking urgent.

I wonder if the hiring of Mark Bryant has some sort of connection to a given player, not as obviously as the Rick Brunson hire did, but that sort of thing. Here’s a quote from the all-knowing Kendrick Perkins:

“He’s one of the top assistant coaches in the game and (doesn’t) get enough credit,” Kendrick Perkins said as Bryant made an NBA Finals run with Phoenix in 2021. “Ask Dwight Howard, Serge Ibaka, Kevin Durant, and Russell Westbrook about his impact! Now we are witnessing his same impact with DeAndre Ayton!”

    Also:

“Bryant’s entry could hasten the metropolitan case for Jalen Duren, who was groomed by Bryant to be one of the rare silver linings on the woebegone Detroit Pistons. The 20-year-old sophomore and 13th pick of the 2022 draft averaged 13.8 points and 11.6 rebounds amidst a dreary 14-win campaign.

The idea of Duren donning a new shade of blue, in fact, was reportedly floating before Bryant showed up: longtime Knicks insider Marc Berman offered the idea around the time of Mikal Bridges’ introduction while one NBA executive told Sean Deveney of Heavy Sports that Duren would be a “perfect fit.”

Bryant lauded Duren’s progress when the two spent a single season together in the Motor City last season.”

Jalen Duren; I like it, and he can start, too. But only at the right price.

clarence – pray tell – what is it that you have against sitting at home, playing video games, drinking mountain dew, eating chips and living the good life…

    what’s wrong with you 😛

on my way to go walk and continually serve this animal thrust upon me by eldest child, yep out on poop patrol – again…stepped downstairs, said hi to youngest son chilling in the living room…let him know it was my birthday…got a hug…asked him to guess what i was gonna do on my birthday – seamlessly said that i was going to do nothing…

called ma and she got the answer right too…about five years ago i started pointedly sharing my health situation, while doing so, i filled those closet to me in on a few dozen or so other behavioral idiosyncrasies that had taken root in me over a lifetime…

took a good 3 years or so for the plan to take hold…but, now i get to do nothing…although, i had heard that doing nothing is actually doing something, cause you’re closely mimicking sleep behavior for the mind, allowing it to reset/repair i guess…

don’t no one go quoting me on that one…

eldest son stepped in to the room, more than half asleep, sang to me, and then was the third one in row to know me so well now…

although i did semi-commit to some nba2k later with the boys…

Happiest Of Birthdays, Geo! Mine was a week ago and I sat on the beach with my hubby then had a big ribeye dinner. Neither event required any thinking.

Also, Kelly Clarkson thinks the opening ceremony for the Paris Games are incredible!

Duren makes the most sense on a number of levels:
-his salary makes a trade easy
    -fits Thibs’ preferences
    -can shoot a little bit
-team control for 2 more years
-seems to have the right mindset
-Leon had made several trades with the Pistons, although they do have a new POBO
-Pistons have other options at C

I read a note that said Payne and Bridges are good friends from their days on the Suns together. I also read that Deuce is going to play ahead of Payne. That makes more sense.

I think the Katz article is a bit about expectations and narrative control. The Knicks have been connected with quite a few Cs. They haven’t been able to make a deal they wanted. So now they are saying it’s not that important they do it now anyway.

IMO, the reality is that they don’t want a backup C. They want an upgrade over Mitch that will be more reliable physically and that will create some space. It still would not shock me if they ultimately traded Mitch and maybe Deuce in a 3 team deal or traded Randle. But I agree it’s not necessary to do it now. They can take a better look at the team with OG, Mikal, Brunson and DDV without Randle together first and make a move at the deadline.

Again, why decrease our win total and our seeding for the first four months of a 6-month season by waiting until the trade deadline when we need a center right now? Makes zero sense to me.

“Again, why decrease our win total and our seeding for the first four months of a 6-month season by waiting until the trade deadline when we need a center right now? Makes zero sense to me.”

I think “makes zero sense” is a bit overstated. The Katz article delineates why it is a logical strategy, whether you agree with it or not. This is a high-stakes decision, considering how little wiggle room the team has to make further moves (although that’s because most believe that guys like DDV and Hart are untouchable in the short term, which they shouldn’t be!)

My thing is, Leon has found reasonable (if not brilliant) solutions to these kinds of problems. I’m absolutely positive that they are working the problem 24/7. Let’s not forget how they duped everyone with the Shake Milton caper to skirt being hard-capped at the first apron. They have earned more trust than you are giving them.

Again, why decrease our win total and our seeding for the first four months of a 6-month season by waiting until the trade deadline when we need a center right now? Makes zero sense to me.

Because the goal is not winning an extra couple of games now and getting 2nd or 3rd seed now instead of 4th seed (or whatever). The goal is winning a championship. To do that they need a starting C that will be able to play regularly and during the playoffs.

Mitch is a good player, but he’s a clunky fit with Randle. Brunson would also benefit from more space. Every time Mitch is on the court we are going to be worried about an injury. His FTs can also be an issue.

They either need a really high quality backup C or preferably an upgrade that can create some space to be sure they are set.

They can’t waste assets now to win a couple of extra games with a medicore backup. They need a legit replacement for I-Hart

I have a lot of trust in the front office. I’m just being impatient for knowing what our full roster will look like. And I’m scared of losing core players, except maybe Randle. I’ve detailed this in the past. 🙂

I was pretty high on Duren until ptmilo threw cold water on the idea. But I only know Duren from the stat page; ptm seems to have actually watched him and said his defensive awareness was lacking.

That’s probably the one thing our coaches are best at, though. We can’t coach Hartenstein’s passing and playmaking (a gene that Duren seems to have, also), but we can coach their defense.

I would take a swing at Ayton if we could do a simple sign-and-trade with Precious, but DA makes $32mm. We can’t get him in any way that makes sense.

That was some dance representing the turmoil of the world… and now John Lennon. The piano is on fire.

Duren and Ayton have some similarities and glaring differences, but two things stand out: contract and age. I think Ayton is more of a finished product but is not attainable in any way that makes sense without Including Randle. Duren is more of an upside play that you could possibly get for a combo of picks, Deuce, Sims, the guys we selected this year, and A Precious sign-and-trade. I don’t think Detroit is looking to move him, but if they are, I would definitely see what it would take to get him.

The stat page alone is no friend to Jalen Duren’s defensive reputation. He’s had a negative defensive EPM in both of his seasons and opponents shot 63.1% at the rim against him this past season.

I’m not saying he can’t get better but I’d be pretty shocked if a team coached by a guy who prioritizes having a center who can play defense over breathing traded for him.

“That was some dance representing the turmoil of the world… and now John Lennon. The piano is on fire.”

What on Earth is this referring to, Clarence? I’m sincerely asking.

to quote me “Also, Kelly Clarkson thinks the opening ceremony for the Paris Games are incredible!”

Also, Supernature accompanying the Olympics saving the world is pretty fun.

    @wojespn
The Phoenix Suns are trading forward David Roddy to the Atlanta Hawks for forward EJ Liddell, sources tell ESPN.

Yeah… I got nothing on this one.

Yeah… I got nothing on this one.

After pouring through their BK-Ref pages, I can tell you that these are both basketball players and not assistant coaches for the Spurs

“The stat page alone is no friend to Jalen Duren’s defensive reputation. He’s had a negative defensive EPM in both of his seasons and opponents shot 63.1% at the rim against him this past season.

I’m not saying he can’t get better but I’d be pretty shocked if a team coached by a guy who prioritizes having a center who can play defense over breathing traded for him.”

Jalen Duren will not turn 21 until November. True, his defensive EPM was only in the 45th percentile, but he averaged 17.0 and 14.4 with 3 assists and a block per 36 on an 18% usage and with a .653 TS%. He led the NBA in defensive rebounding %. He played much of the season with a bad ankle and with a team in utter disarray.

Obviously they can defer to Bryant’s judgment regarding his fit and upside, but if he costs nothing but a combination of end-of-rotation players and second rounders and you have him locked in for less than $5M AAV for the next two years, AND you have Mitch and two of Huk, Precious, and Sims also on the roster, I can’t imagine getting a better player for less.

Yeah, if Duren costs a coupla second rounders, sure. I do not think that would be the case, though.

Let’s assume that our projected starting 5 plus DDV and Hart aren’t going anywhere. That leaves Deuce, probably Precious, KBD, Kolek, Huk, Sims, McCullar, Dadiet, 2 protected firsts, and a bunch of assorted seconds as trade fodder. For Duren, I would give up one of Deuce and Kolek, any one of the remaining players, and the equivalent of a protected first and a second.

Example: Deuce, Dadiet, a protected 1st and a second.

I might even go a bit higher than that, but not much. Or it they would settle for Precious instead of either Deuce or Kolek, I’d throw in another pick.

Sadly, if I were the Pistons, I’d turn down any offers from any team that didn’t include at least one unprotected first plus other goodies.

I believe that Roddy was some depth on the Grizzlies this past season. I think he even might have started a few games. He’s a perfectly cromulent NBA player, if I’m thinking of the guy you mentioned here. Had no idea he had gone to the Suns, though.

I feel like Deuce and Detroit’s own first is a pretty fair trade for Duren (they really need a shooter). I just don’t know if he’s the right guy for us.

What about Chris Boucher as an option? Toronto has both Poeltl and Olynyk ahead of him and also drafted two more big men in Mogbo and Chomche plus Boucher is over 30 and they are not really built to win anyway.

I’d much prefer finding out with Duren than I would with Ayton, especially if Thibs thinks he’d work. #inthibswetrust Also, the Mark Bryant connection.

Would rather not give up Deuce (they’d have both Grimes *and* Deuce, while we’d have neither of Bojan or Burks!) if we can help it. I like Kolek, but am not ready to anoint him as Jalen’s back-up until he’s put in some time (I *do* think he’ll get there, though).

Chris Boucher. Meh. I’d rather bring back Precious, for sure.

Doogie, we have Payne, and would keep one of Deuce or Kolek in the trade I proposed. You have to give something to get something. A backup center who might blossom into a star on a rookie deal is a rare find, especially when your goal is to replace someone like iHart.

He’s not a C, but he’s as much of a C as Precious is. I think Precious is an at least slightly better version of Boucher.

Got me on Grimes, Henny Youngman. I knew it, but forgot.

I have no strong opinion on Duren, but if we are worried about defense, I-Hart was not exactly a good defender for the Knicks at first. Maybe some of that was his Achilles at times, but either way our coaching staff coached him up a lot on D.

Duren is a high-floor/high-ceiling player. He will be at worst a really good backup and at best an all-star. He’s exactly the kind of young player you take a chance on at a non-exorbitant price. To be honest, he’s the kind of player that the Pistons should build around.

Happy B’Day, Geo! 🎉 I hope you have the best just chill and do nothing birthday ever! ☺️ 😉 Cheers 🥂

Judge just did something to a baseball I don’t know has ever been done before

So excited to watch the 2024 Yankees bullpen go to work with a 3 run lead! What could go wrong?

You get the bullpen you deserve when the strategy is “get 9 guys who all need Matt Blake voodoo”

Senga was looking nasty before he got hurt, too. Hopefully he won’t be out too long because he is so much fun to watch. That’s one of the most insane breaking balls I’ve ever seen.
