    My takes relative to expectations:
    Kolek: A-
Showed poise, toughness, leadership. Didn’t seemed to care about his. Has some expected issues on defense. Looks pretty close to being NBA-ready for a limited backup role. Needs lots of work defensively. He should get a long look for a 10th man role.
    Dadiet: B
Looked like a deer in the headlights early on, then got increasingly comfortable as the game went on. He was defensively isolated on Brandon Miller a number of times, had some success but mostly looked overmatched by a very polished offensive player. After short-arming his first 3 shots, he loosened up a bit and the misses looked okay. The defense, rebounding and passing were better than advertised, but he has a lot of work to do if he is going to play any NBA minutes this year. Seems like he’s worth the pick at #25.
    Hukporti: C+
Not much to get excited about in his limited minutes, but nothing to conclude that he was a stiff either. Like Dadiet, he short-armed some good looks early on that suggested some nervousness. Seemed reasonably athletic. I need to see more, especially if he and Kolek can develop some chemistry.
    Rokas: C-
Considering his age and how far we are from when he was drafted, he was very unimpressive. He had some moments, but mostly looked like any of the garden variety summer league scrubs. I doubt that we will ever see him in a Knicks uniform.
    Duane Washington Jr.: A
Played a great game for a small scoring guard, but didn’t seem interested at all in making plays for others. Could he be a deep bench change of pace guard? Probably not. But singlehandedly kept us in the game, so deserves props.
    Jacob Toppin: B-
Stroked a couple of nice 3’s, very live body, decent size, good motor. At 24 years old, is there any room for further development? Probably not, i.e. his ceiling is replacement-level wing.
    Dmitri Skapintsev: C+
Garden-variety lumbering stiff, but has pretty good hands and made a couple of plays. Not a chance he plays for us this year, or probably for anyone anywhere ever.

Would have liked to have seen McCullar get a crack at checking Miller.

I wonder what we’ll do with McCullar if this injury keeps lingering. Sign him to a two-way anyway to let him rehab?

I dunno, part of his draft day drop was that he’s injury prone and now this. I hope he at least plays in the G-league this year.

agree with zman on kolek and hukporti. good bit lower on dadiet’s performance. thought passing willingness was an A but recognition and execution are quite a ways away, like D minus away, more so than the other first round wings i’ve seen this summer. don’t think he has the handle or first step to even attack closeouts well in the nba but that could change as he gets stronger and handle tightens a bit. game is too fast for him right now. he’s really young and his length, motor and shot release are all great.

maybe we should trade deuce for poeltl just so we can put mitch as the reserve and finally pair him with someone who can actually throw a lob. i don’t mean it deuce.

pt, the thing with Dadiet in this game is that he looked so tentative with everything he did, and he was so overmatched by a really good young player in Miller, I am giving him a bit of a pass on the things that seemed out of sync with the film I watched on him, i.e. on the things I am confident will come around. But yeah, maybe a C-ish grade is more appropriate.

One thing I forgot to mention is that Damion Baugh had some good moments and was tenacious on D.

Kolek looks like a pro. G league is probably tailored for an older guy like him but he looks ready to get some backup minutes.

Thanks Pepper and KFNINJ. I cannot find full games on nba.com, and don’t have espn plus. I’ll keep searching.

Kolek was really fun. If his shooting is real, he could be a very nice backup to Brunson. I like that he would offer a change of style and serve as a pass oriented PG. I think he could be pretty good with Randle and/or Mitch.

Some of my takeaways from yesterday:
    1. Kolek is a confident, plus-playmaker. I enjoyed seein him get to his spots and use crazy angles to set guys up. It was beautiful even if it was only Summer League
    2. Dmitri Skapintsev- he may warrant and extended look because Hukporti looks slow and late to react. And you can’t look that way in SL. I liked Skapintsev last year too.
    3. Jacob Toppin- if he can mix it up on the boards, we have our 10 minute a night PF. But, we’re in trouble if Jules has to sit any games unless Achiuwa returns.
    4. I really wanted to see Sims play in SL after watching him train with Bibby. But I’m gonna have to be patient and wait until preseason to see what he does with the expansion of his game

Alcaraz is something. Like the dude is just the dude for however long his body goes. I

Thx for the grades, detailed reporting, and links, Zman, pt, et al. That’s really helpful and fun to read for those of us who can’t watch (yet).

    My only strong takeaways:

-Kolek was exactly as advertised, in a good way. It’s been a while since we had someone in the “pure point guard” mold, and it’s a role the team as currently constructed could definitely use.

-I saw little-to-nothing from Rokas except for that sick bank runner. Not sure he has a future here unless he can do that, specifically, 8 or so times per game.

-I think Huk will get a guaranteed NBA contract one day.

I thought Alcaraz would dominate Roland Garros for years and pick up a handful of AO and USO crowns, but struggle to exploit grass because of his first serve.

Now he’s firing 132 mph flats, not elite but certainly strong enough to win service games handily, and hitting an A+ ball on literally every shot in a tennis player’s repertoire.

I thought Djokovic was the epitome of “complete player” but now you’ve got a guy who does everything Djokovic does — impossible average quality of return, a monster backhand, grass-champion slice, perfect movement — but with an all-time-great Federeresque forehand and (lol) overhead. It’s almost unfair.

If Sinner didn’t exist, I’d bet that Carlos wins more Slams than the field for the next decade.

Trent Grisham is low-key balling and Rice looks like the player many hoped Greg Bird would be.

The Yankees will never stop finding new ways to lose games with Boone as manager…

    And Volpe? And Verdugo?
Old George would have sent everyone to the minors…

P.S. and fired this manager years ago

It’s on Boone because this is the atmosphere he’s created. Yankees under him constantly make mental mistakes, don’t hustle and there is never any accountability.

Girardi was let go because he was too tough on the players and they thought the younger players weren’t going to develop under him. Instead they have a manager who tries to be everyone’s best friend and gives the most annoying, vomit inducing post-game press conferences.

Yeah Boone has his issues, but I can’t blame him for a player misreading a fly ball.

After the game Boone said the Yankees are turning the corner and are in a great spot. You gotta be fucking kidding me, this is the shit I’m talking about.

Very rare to see Novak get owned like that.

He’s 37 and was coming off recent surgery. I find it amazing he could compete at a high enough level to make it to the finals. I’m not 100% convinced he doesn’t have at least one more slam in him, but it’s going to be very difficult at his age to get back to his best form, sustain it for a full tournament and beat this kid who is just starting to reach his.

I wouldn’t put too much weight on a single SL game for any of our guys but it was nice to see Kolek’s playmaking look legit at a slightly higher level.

At 31yo Sampras won his 5th US Open and never competed in another tournament. Crazy how long the current generation Big 3 have competed into their late 30s.

If you look further back in time, imo most top players started to deteriorate in their late 20s. Jimmy Connors was a bit of a fluke. I want to believe it’s all nutrition and a better understanding of the human body and physical fitness, but I’m pretty cynical. That probably accounts for some of it, but unless you can prove something else is going on….

I think the tech and method of healing today are vastly superior to the last century’s. We went from chirurgeons to algorithms.

Take your Mildronate. Actually can’t believe they banned it, poor Maria.

It’s possible teams missed on a relatively obvious 1.1 in Sheppard because he looks like a finance bro. Just connected on an insane lob to Whitmore.

From an outsider’s perspective, the Yankees seem like a slightly odd but still very good team. The offense has basically two 10 WAR players and a bunch of other guys who are perfectly fine, and the pitching staff doesn’t look great when you dig into the stats but there they are at the top of the ERA leaderboard as a team. They’ll be in the playoffs where they’ll have the same puncher’s chance as anybody else.

Yeah the Yankees are very good and should at worst finish with the #1 Wild Card. But with the start they had and without a dominant team in the AL they shouldn’t have a 3 week stretch with the worst record in all of baseball with Stanton being the only significant injury.

It’s just built up frustration from basically the entire Boone era of underwhelming seasons and wasting away Judge’s prime years.

with Stanton being the only significant injury.

In all fairness they lost their 4 and 5 hitters and their 3 & 4 starters. Volpe went on a prolonged slump and Gil went from Cy Young to Cy Vance for 4 starts. And their best prospect pulled a lat hitting .389 at AAA.

Other than that… everything is great.

Losing Rizzo has been an upgrade cause they called up Ben Rice. Schmidt is the only SP that got hurt and Cole returned shortly after so no excuses for the rotation.

But yes Jasson getting hurt at same time as Stanton has low key been a huge blow, hopefully he returns soon after Stanton and sends Verdugo to the bench.

Cody Poteet was pitching lights out for Schmidt (3-0, 2.14 ERA) and even with Cole back (after a few shaky starts) Poteet would have made excellent long relief, which the Yankees desperately need with Rodon/Stroman and cortez struggling to go 5 every outting.

    I AM NOT A ROBOT – yet…

watching the game i do not wish to watch duane do his thang…seriously…why is he here…

wow tyler really looks like an old young guy out there…so what happens with deuce now? trade deadline deal perhaps?

at some point in the season he may be behind: jalen, mikal, donte and now running your second unit, tyler kolek…

looks at bio…dang, he’s old though…he’s the same age as deuce (23)…how well can he play defense though?

it would be really nice to go from a score first point guard to a pass first point guard during the game…i’ll breathe for now, but, that would help our situation a lot…we looked soooooooo terrible during the playoffs when jalen stepped off the court…we just need to play even for that time off the court…

better yet if we can play him off the ball, get him an easy shot…julius will help with that…OG TBD on increased offense…

i saw dmytro do something good…

for some reason damion baugh seemed to stick out…
