Could New York Knicks Sign Los Angeles Clippers Center?

So Rokas kept his best for the last, but his team lost (it’s not easy to beat home court advantage in this kind of tournaments).
Fun Fact: his +/- was -11 and Lithuania lost by 11.

See you in Summer League mate!

SL roster is taking shape, I think they’ll announce the official roster later today, here what’s known so far:

    Guards:
Tyler Kolek, Alex O’Connell, Samkelo Cele, Duane Washington, DaQuan Jeffries, Rokas Jakubaitis

    Wings:
Pacome Dadiet, Kevin McCullar Jr., Justin Lewis, Jacob Toppin

    Bigs:
    Ariel Hukporti

Next guys should probably be wings and big, right?

FWIW, the reporting was that Rokas might come to Vegas if Lithuania didn’t qualify. It’s not a lock.

If he doesn’t come to Vegas, we can stop talking about him because it’s not going to happen.

Never was the biggest fan of Summer League (Danilo’s 1st season ruined by Traylor, Knox’s SL heroics blinding Fizdale into giving him 2000+ 1st season minutes, etc), but this year is of real interest. Reminds me how much fun it is to have a collection of non-lotto draft picks (that we actually picked).

Jeremy Cohen convinced there’s another notable move coming, and that the entire market is on hold right now as everyone waits to see what Ainge does with Marketon.

In 2021, our summer league team had Obi, IQ, Grimes, Deuce, and Sims. The first two didn’t play that much, but still, that was the coolest Summer team I could remember us ever having.

If he doesn’t come to Vegas, we can stop talking about him because it’s not going to happen.

Wait, I forgot he was also on that 2021 summer team. And apparently his agent’s wording to Bondy last month was that they would “strongly consider” Vegas if Lithuania got eliminated.

Jeremy Cohen convinced there’s another notable move coming, and that the entire market is on hold right now as everyone waits to see what Ainge does with Marketon.

Alan, do you mean a notable move for the Knicks? Or in general?

I can’t see them doing more than signing a backup big (or trading for one), but happy to be surprised!

For the Knicks. As in Kessler, or some other move for a center that’s more ambitious than simply re-signing Precious. But he thinks the league in general is on pause til the Jazz decide what to do.

Maybe the delay in signing Precious could be evidence Cohen is right.

And man, Ainge really loves to keep the market hostage…

At least this time it feels like Ainge has a reason to wait, as they might be negotiating an extension on Markannen to then deal him after. We know Leon can be very patient, so it wouldn’t surprise me if he’s biding his time and waiting to see what happens in summer league and after.

Thank you. I hope there’s something reasonable they can do on that front – even if they spent most of last season without a decent backup big, this year’s team has larger aspirations and the FO should address that…

For those who celebrate, today is the anniversary of Phil Jackson signing Joakim Noah, Brandon Jennings and Courtney Lee for a combined 35% of the cap.

There is a little problem with this theory and someone more astute on these issues can correct me if I’m wrong.

Markkanen is eligible for an extension starting Aug 6th. Should he sign an extension, he is unable to be traded for 6 months per the CBA. The 2025 trade deadline is Feb 6th 2025 so he will be eligible to be traded exactly one day this season if he signs the extension.

I think this argues he will be moving very soon…. before Aug 6th…

Do we even want Kessler? The numbers are OK, but I haven’t seen him play so I don’t have an opinion. Do you sacrifice Deuce for him? Or are we looking at a bigger trade, with Randle involved?

our most exciting summer league team was mitch. i’d put summer league mitch up against the draymond klay harrison barnes gsw team or the donovan mitchell 6 steals a game summer or the earthquake. guys was blocking 3pa starting with a foot in the paint. i’d never seen anything like it.

Does anyone think Walker Kessler isn’t a stiff?

It’s an honest question, i.e. I’m not declaring he is one. I’ve hardly seen him play.

In the little time I have watched him, he seems to have very slow processing speed, can’t pass or set a screen, and is fairly useless on offense.

He’s big, though. And maybe I’d do Deuce for Kessler straight up because of positional need. But Danny Ainge is rarely so easy to deal with.

Now a three team trade where we can pluck Kessler for Deuce and the two Washington seconds and then send Kessler with Detroit’s pick to the Pistons for Duren would be pretty sexy.

    Again, though, Danny Ainge.

I feel pretty sure the OG extension (and Brunson’s reaction to it) eliminated any possibility of Jalen signing a team-friendly extension.

kessler has quite a few flaws but i wouldn’t call him a stiff. he runs the floor well and has nimble balance shift for his size, which is one of the reasons he contests so many shots from quicker guys. he doesn’t get abused as badly on switches as you’d expect. his screening is definitely hit or miss, often miss, which is disappointing given that he’s not the greatest roll threat.

he’s kind of a tweener in that his motor does run hot and cold and he can look lumbering, but he’s a also a genuinely excellent rim protector with decent anticipation and verticality, not just a shot blocker.

duren has a lot of interesting offensive traits but i think he’s drawing almost dead to be a decent defensive 5. he’s so young so you can’t say dead but his defensive processing to date has been bottom tier. makes no sense for this team unless you’re just in love with his ceiling.

    From the Katz piece:

In 2025, Brunson would be able to sign the 30 percent max. But in 2028, his 35 percent max, which will come under a higher salary cap, would be worth a projected $417.8 million over five years.

That deal would start with a $72 million salary and end with (yes, we double-checked the math on this) a $95.1 million one. The cap is growing, and money is beginning to look fake with the NBA’s new broadcast deal about to kick in.

It’s crazy how much salaries are about to go up.

I think Brunson ends up signing the extension knowing that the big payday is coming to offset short-term losses, and in the meantime knowing that the team is surrounding him with perfect complementary players including his Nova buddies.

    Aaaaaaannnnnnnddddddd

Does anyone know what word this is😉

LOL It’s an elongated “and,” for a specific effect. But I know you already knew that.

    Good morning, EBW.

duren has a lot of interesting offensive traits but i think he’s drawing almost dead to be a decent defensive 5. he’s so young so you can’t say dead but his defensive processing to date has been bottom tier. makes no sense for this team unless you’re just in love with his ceiling.

Sh*t. You burst my bubble but I appreciate it. I kept up on Duren during his rookie year and read some glowing pieces about his defense but those were a long time ago and they were still dominating my perception of him.

Any thoughts on Carter Jr? That’s another guy I’ve loved based on early opinions that I haven’t kept up with. I feel like he’s available in the right trade, I’m just not sure we have the right pieces for it.

    Aaaaaaannnnnnnddddddd……. We’re done

If anyone else had written this I would have headed to google to see if we just completed the Kessler trade, but it’s Doogie so it probably just means some poor fool ending his sentence with a preposition.

LOL It’s an elongated “and,” for a specific effect. But I know you already knew that.

So… in what sense are we done… as in the Apophis sense… or the roster sense?

I assumed Doogie was posting about Daniel Theis being taken off the FA market.

Playing with the DARKO career DPM graphs, and if you believe the theory that Mikal was disengaged/miscast/misused in Brooklyn since last year, the Knicks’ starting lineup looks awfully good.

    Seriously, look at this: https://ibb.co/yWR0wJ6

    @MikeVorkunov
Interesting to hear Paul George, on his pod, give his side of negotiations w/ Clippers. He said LA’s 1st offer was 2yrs/$60 mil — “disrespectful.” Then LA went to $45 mil AAV. PG said he would’ve taken Kawhi deal but LA offered too late. He asked for no-trade clause; LA said no.

    SI.com

The trade may have seemed a little too perfect at first glance, but on Monday Nets general manager Sean Marks denied Bridges asked out of Brooklyn.

“(Knicks general manager) Leon (Rose) talked for a couple days on this thing and it moved very, very quickly,” Marks said. “You could tell how interested they were in adding Mikal to that group.”

Mitch in summer league was both a revelation and love at first sight….

Mitch in summer league was both a revelation and love at first sight….

Yet all the coverage at the time was of Draft Steal Kevin Knox.

Can’t think of a better way to tank than giving 19 y/o Knox big minutes.

Yet all the coverage at the time was of Draft Steal Kevin Knox.

First team All-Vegas 2018 (as a true freshman).

Second teamers included JJJ, Trae, and Ayton.

I’m still holding out hope for Paul Reed. I like him more than Kessler. Even more because we won’t have to give up assets to get him. His steal, block, and offensive rebounding percentages all top ten in the nba over the last couple years. He also has a solid midrange game and hints of a developing three pointer.

Sign him and resign Precious and we are good shape. In some ways with more different looks than we would have had with IHart.

I also like that he isn’t a drop coverage center. That way we can use drop with Robinson and Hukporti and straight coverage with Reed and Precious. Gives us a lot more defensive options.

Reed also played in 82 regular season games last season. It would be nice to have *two* more sturdy guys in Mikal Bridges and Paul Reed.

Paul Reed is an energy guy to the point of being chaotic. He’s a whirling dervish on the court for good and for ill. Fills up the stat sheet, but also fouls a lot and his decision making isn’t very good. But maybe Thibs’ finishing school for bigs can unlock another level in him.

Paul Reed is at least close to the best-case scenario in terms of options that are presumably gettable without surrendering real assets. I’m pretty surprised we haven’t heard any murmurings on that front–seems like a very natural team/player fit for many obvious reasons. I’d probably prefer him to Kessler, even before accounting for the fact that Kessler would cost us assets.

That, combined with the fact that we haven’t re-signed Precious and have let unexciting-but-fine options like Tillman and Theis come off the board, makes me inclined to agree with Jeremy that there’s something brewing.

makes me inclined to agree with Jeremy that there’s something brewing

We should rip off Memphis. That always works for the Lakers and Celtics.

I like whirling dervish types. It is why I really wanted us to take a flyer on Tari Eason in the 2022 draft. I think it is a lot easier to reign in a player with too much energy than it is to rev up one with a questionable motor. So if the biggest problem a young player has is lack of control and too much energy it is an often a solvable problem and if you can focus that energy it can actually be a good thing.

Reed cut his fouls and turnovers this year and I think with experience and good coaching they shouldn’t be too much of a problem moving forward.

Of every center we’ve been linked to this summer he is my favorite even over players that ended up being too expensive like Goga and Smith.

“So if the biggest problem a young player has is lack of control and too much energy it is an often a solvable problem and if you can focus that energy it can actually be a good thing.”

    Except, you know, Kevin Knox.

Having said that bit of snark, I also throw my hat into the Paul Reed ring.

I’m pretty surprised we haven’t heard any murmurings on that front–seems like a very natural team/player fit for many obvious reasons.

I hate to use absolutes, but there are never any murmurings out of this front office. He’s less readable that Phil Ivey…

Joakim Noah is available for 4 years with a player option, no trade clause, trade kicker, and a promise not to choke Thibs if he shows up to practice stoned or hung over.

That, combined with the fact that we haven’t re-signed Precious and have let unexciting-but-fine options like Tillman and Theis come off the board, makes me inclined to agree with Jeremy that there’s something brewing.

I agree that something is brewing.

If there were no potential trades available, they would have signed Precious by now and called it a summer. That doesn’t mean a deal will close, but imo they have something in mind that’s a better option than Precious.

Personally, I wouldn’t use any assets on a backup. I’d just sign Precious.

As of now, Mitch is the starter. But if he’s not at his best or breaks down, we need a replacement starter, not a backup. A backup will get us through a few games here or there. Precious can do that. What we need is a potential replacement if Mitch is OUT for an extended period of time or in the playoffs. If we don’t land one now, we’ll need assets to land one later.

Paul Reed is a short C ala Taj or Achiuwa.
He’s ok if your team is injured as fuck but if Sixers are letting him go why get him?
    Kessler is in different level.
    He’s a Defensive Tower.
If we can get gim wo sacrificing vital locker room parts i say DO IT.

I’m feeling a 3 way with the Knicks, LAL and Utah with Randle to LAL. Markkenen to NY and picks from LA and swaps from us to Utah with Rui and Russell for ballast….

if we get Marketin…and Randle goes out…then E and Hubert have to walk down the canyon of heroes with only a pic of Leon covering their private parts…and a few KB’ers get to chant “shame…shame…shame”

Aren’t we risking someone else picking Precious up with each passing day that we don’t sign him back? I’m not saying that he’s seen as a really valuable commodity or anything…….but it *is* a risk, right? (Then if we have a trade in the works that does not end up being consummated, and someone else has signed Precious to a cheap contract in the meantime, we’re kind of fucked all over again.)

Pretty sure that Markkanen and Kessler for Randle and the rest of our tradeable picks works in the trade machine. But why would Utah want Randle (unless there was a third team…)

Edit: Bob beat me to it!

if we get Marketin…and Randle goes out…then E and Hubert have to walk down the canyon of heroes with only a pic of Leon covering their private parts…and a few KB’ers get to chant “shame…shame…shame”

That would be top-grade entertainment and a fine show, but in reality I’ve wanted Markaten since the Bulls let him go to RFA and have wanted Randle out of here for basically … well, forever.

If Leon gets Kessler and Markannen for Randle and some second rounders I won’t even cover up.

If Leon gets Kessler and Markannen for Randle and some second rounders I won’t even cover up.

I don’t think he wants both of them, but Markkenen to play a lot of small ball 5 to draw KP out of the paint in a Boston match up.

They don’t have enough to get Markkanen this year. Their pick situation is a bit better next year when they can offer 2030 and 2032 swaps (and maybe the Pistons will be better)…

If we’re dreaming impossible dreams like Markannen, JJJ is my current Dulcinea. Memphis did just draft Edey, after all. And of course they flipped Porzingis and picks to Boston for Marcus Smart.

The Lakers could trade their 29 and 31 picks which would be very yummie for Utah, the Knicks can contribute a pair of swaps and LA could use multi all star and 2nd team all NBA Randle as LeBron wants win now players. Randle can also be the focal point of an offense for limited minutes when Lebron and AD need a blow. It’s a fever dream, but WTF…. Leon is scheming something.

If we’re dreaming impossible dreams like Markannen, JJJ is my current Dulcinea. Memphis did just draft Edey, after all. And of course they flipped Porzingis and picks to Boston for Marcus Smart.

Wasn’t KP on Washington’s roster prior to the Boston trade, not Memphis?

Yes, Memphis flipped him. They gave Washington Tyus Jones for Porzingis and then gave Porzingis and two first round picks to Boston for Marcus Smart. The Celtics gave Washington matching salary and a 2nd round pick to complete the trade.

Anyway… we’re not getting Markannen or Jackson.

Ainge supposedly wants to get picks in ’25 and ’26 for Cooper Flagg and the AJ guy. San Antonio is his wet dream; they have Atlanta’s first in ’25 and swap rights in ’26. But the Spurs don’t want to give them up.

    JJJ is my current Dulcinea

I think JJJ is too good to be a Dulcinea. A Dulcinea needs to be truly terrible, like Frank, Knox, or Reddish

    Would absolutely love JJJ though

I recall that Dulcinea is someone believed to be worth tilting at windmills for. You have to make up your mind if that is an appropriate analogy for what you want.

    Yes, Memphis flipped him.

No…. they didn’t…. KP was never a member of Memphis…. it was a 3 teamer.

If I am misinformed, I’m happy to be corrected.

Fom KP’s BBR page…. “June 23, 2023: As part of a 3-team trade, traded by the Washington Wizards to the Boston Celtics; the Boston Celtics traded Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies; the Boston Celtics traded Danilo Gallinari, Mike Muscala and Julian Phillips to the Washington Wizards; the Memphis Grizzlies traded Marcus Sasser and a 2024 1st round draft pick (Bub Carrington was later selected) to the Boston Celtics; and the Memphis Grizzlies traded Tyus Jones to the Washington Wizards. 2023 top-4 protected pick is GSW own

Well I guess we’re not counting on the incredible huk to be our fulltime backup C

So we’ve signed Dadiet, Kolek, and Hukporri. Does anyone know the status of McCullar?

I’m not even sure how good JJJ is.

Probably a disappointment given his draft slot, but a good player. Memphis likes to play him a lot at the 4, they’re definitely not trading him because they drafted Edey

Well it sounds like Kessler is losing a showdown with Edey as we speak, so maybe he’s not the best fit?

    JJJ is allergic to rebounds.

He’s a 6’10 DPY winner who rebounds worse than RJ Barrett. Not sure how that award was voted.

    He’s also a stretch 5 who only shoots 32% from 3.

He also forgot how to block shots last year.

Idk if Kessler dominating the summer league is the best for us
He did some job as i saw

If Kessler is a hot trade target, why is he in summer league?
