New York @ Charlotte (this time for real!) W 122-108 Record 8-5

The second stop in our “Crush The Rag Dolls” B2B went as smooth as the first.
For the second straight game we never trailed, maybe it’s a team record, anyway it looks like we mastered the art of beating lesser competition without breaking a sweat and it makes those kind of games tasty but a tad boring*.

Next: The last stop of the road trip, in Minnesota against the 9-3 Wolves.

    Thoughts:

    – We’re in a nice position record wise but maybe if you look closer there’s a trend. I’ll watch carefully for another couple of weeks** before writing about it. šŸ˜›

    – Grimes’ better learn and eat some swagger sandwiches while healing his wrist (no brace yesterday), politness is nice but some brass is better on a basketball floor.

    – I agree with Ess-Dog and Owen, RJ’s shooting form looked a little different. Are we over analyzing it?

    – “No lead is safe in today’s NBA” and Clifford*** never conceded defeat so 8-men plus a sprinkle of Deuce, no garbage to collect for our end-of-the-bench guys.

    – Championship or bust, chase for a star, bring everything down… I don’t know what’s better but it’s a sunny sunday and life’s too hard to refuse some comfy mezzanine time… at least for today.

    * With my new schedule I can only watch (and recap) games in the weekend. I won’t complain with victories but I’d like a bit more competitive games šŸ˜‰

** 3 games against stronger teams (MIN, MIA, PHO), then another nice chance to stomp over the have-nots (Charlotte and Detroit), then a visit to Canada and then… it depends on the Silver Cup!

*** The same Clifford who’s Thibs close friend (they worked together as assistants in NY and HOU) and gave him a sterling feedback about Fournier before the Knicks signed Papillon.

    Play(s) Of The Game:
Our go-to play did work again: land in Charlotte and put 5 players on the floor.

    Stats Of The Game:
    0. Charlotte largest lead (booo-ring).

    GRADES:

    Brunson A
A 26-points 1st half (6-9 2FG, 4-5 3FG) to put the game on the right track, clerical work in the 2nd (6 assists).

    Randle B-
Brunson’s opposite, better in the 2nd (4-5 2FG, 1-1 3FG) when he run over weaker defenders. 8 assists (yeah!) 4 turnovers (oh!) and single-digit rebounds in 4 of the last 5 games (unusual).
Small alert: he’s shooting 67.1% from the line.

    Barrett C-
Shades of Old-RJ (please, don’t tinker with your shot!) but he gets a pass coming from migraines.
Italian announcers shocked me with this: according to Cleaning The Glass, before yesterday’s game he was 2nd overall in on-off net differential between players with at least 20 MPG.
And somehow he had the best +/- of the team yesterday (+15).

    Robinson A
    11 Offensive boards. ’nuff said.

    Quickley C+
When your team dominates and you have a negative +/- you know it’s not your best day. It happens. Outside shot was off (0-5 3FG) but energy wasn’t.

    Hart A-
Step by step is coming back (6 reb, 4 ast, 3 stl).
Sometimes he takes the three, sometimes he passes it, I love him but sometimes I want to strangle him.

    Hartenstein C+
7 rebounds in 15 minutes for our backup center, a normal day at the office.

    Donte DiVincenzo A+
He played so well I had to use his full name. Career high in points (25) and 3-pointers made (7), plus 3 steals, a block and a ton of bravado****. He’s ready to take Shy-Grimes’ spot in the starting lineup, but I’m not sure our malleable coach is ready to do it and he could be right weighting the balance between starters and Bench Mob.

    McBride B+
He took (and buried) his shots, bit his opponents, then went back to the doghouse with his well deserve cookie.
When he’ll like to break free he could be a well paid superstar overseas (see Larkin, Shane).

    Thibs A
No mistakes and timely timeouts when the guys started wandering too much. In games likes this there’s not much more to do.

**** Final Four MVP, part time starter with the Bucks and the Warriors, I watched him play dozens of times so nothing he does surprise me.

    ā€œI love the mezzanineā€
    -Alan

Well, I saw both a World Series game winner (Game 6 in 1996) and an iconic WS individual game win (Mr. November) from the loge section at old Yankee Stadium, which is basically the mezzanine. Soā€¦ yeah! Love me some mezzanine!

Very nice win. There was some cognitive dissonance watching Bridges, who appears to still be pretty good at basketball.

Not much to add to what Max wrote (great cap!). Very satisfying, competent, complete win.

Not worried about RJ yet, still off to a tremendous start. But a lot of his actions last night were vintage and he had looked like a new guy for the first couple games. We will see how it goes.

My other major takeaway, Chet Holmgren is the real deal. There are a ome funny clips of him on Twitter celebrating a big shot. Huge game last night and I hope you all drafted him in fantasy.

On his post-game pod, Macri argued that despite DDV’s big game last night, the team might be better served going back to the original starting five once Grimes is healthy, mainly because Grimes is a better point of attack defender than Donte. Thoughts?

Knicks are currently 10th in ORTG and 5th in DRTG

CHA is really missing Dennis Smith, Jr. Yes, really.

    Thoughts?

To me there are points for both solutions.

Grimes is a better POA defender but maybe he can “unlock” playing with the second unit, while DDV can be disruptive jumping into passing lanes even against opponents’ starters.

OTOH I love the current Bench Mob and his Gnomeball, especially in the “BM plus RJ” configuration.

In baseball I’m a platoon guy Casey Stengel’s style, so if I was the coach maybe I’d go game by game, but I doubt Thibs will do it (when I digest badly I still dream about “Elfrid Payton starting-PG”).

There are some non-superstar players that we flat out cannot guard. Miles Bridges is one of them, and for the life of me- I can’t figure it out. He always has a good game against us.

On his post-game pod, Macri argued that despite DDVā€™s big game last night, the team might be better served going back to the original starting five once Grimes is healthy, mainly because Grimes is a better point of attack defender than Donte. Thoughts?

I mentioned something similar last night. I haven’t watched closely enough to get a sense of Donte’s on ball defense. He’s so much better at cutting, driving, and forcing TOs that I’m not sure it matters even if Grimes is a better PoA defender.

The other consideration is lineup balance. It’d be nice to have a bit more scoring punch with Donte on the 2nd unit if Grimes can’t step up his usage. If he can’t, then Grimes is the guy you package with Fournier for an upgrade.

Deuce is also knocking at the door for some rotation minutes if he keeps being even semi-decent shooting the ball.

Will let others get worked about who should start. The key thing is we are a very deep team with a lot of good players. I would stick with Grimes for now. Still a perfect fit with higher usage players.

Knicks are currently 10th in ORTG and 5th in DRTG

Hustlebunny stats. Don’t be fooled, we’re on the mezzanine. And not Alan’s mezzanine, but the kind that collapses in earthquake movies.

Besides, we’ve had a really easy schedule, right? Mostly home games, no back-to-backs, no good teams… right?

The hope with Grimes is that his usage would go up significantly if he’s usually on the floor with only one of RJ/JR/JB, rather than all three of them. The fear is that he’s fundamentally timid, but I’m not sure I buy that. He’s had games where he’s taken and made a ton of shots. I think getting him away from those guys might open up more opportunities for him.

It would just mean that the closest thing we have to a stopper in the starting lineup is… RJ?

I think Grimes is just thinking too much this season. He had a great offseason and he probably wants to apply everything he’s learned all at once. Especially the stuff he got from Redick. It’s hard to do that when the offense isn’t built to include a heavy enough dose of those kinds of actions. Grimes should be constantly running and cutting like DDV did last night. I don’t think Thibs adjusted the offense- that’s just DDV’s game. The pace with the starters is incredibly slow and guys just stand around when they don’t have the ball. Maybe DDV SHOULD start just to increase the activity, and Thibs should stagger RJ and Grimes with that second unit. Nevertheless, Grimes has to take cues from DDV and move more

Put that way 1 as an opportunity to stretch QGā€™s wings – that makes a lot of sense too.

To me, Grimes and DDV are a side dish. The major question is RJ and whether he is the guy you want in your top lineup. Both Grimes and DDV are looking like excellent sidekicks in their own ways.

The only thing i can see impacting what seems to be the perfect chemistry of this team is if RJ turns out to not be the guy we should close with.

Besides, weā€™ve had a really easy schedule, right?

Taking away (not counting) Knicks games:

Combined record of the teams we beat: 22-40
    (ATL 6-4, CLE 5-5, LAC 3-6, CHA 3-7, SA 3-9, WAS 2-9)

Combined record of the teams that beat us: 26-18
    (BOS 8-2, MILW 8-4, CLE 5-5, NOP 5-7)

So far we’ve done exactly what we should have and we did it while looking good, so thumbs up to Thibs and the guys, but it’s really too early to say anything about our spot in the League’s totem pole.

I donā€™t think Thibs adjusted the offense- thatā€™s just DDVā€™s game. The pace with the starters is incredibly slow and guys just stand around when they donā€™t have the ball.

    Amen.

Thanks for the recap, Max. Yeah, winning easily is boring and i opted to get some sleep. šŸ˜›

Now iā€™m going to read the game thread to have a ā€œfeelā€ of the game.

Drink some Red Bull first or you can fell asleep again šŸ˜‰

    Edit:
Winning easily is very tasty against Boston, the Lakers, Miami… šŸ˜€

We’re 15th in SOS, i.e., dead middle. But SRS takes that into account along with point differential, and that says we’re 5th in the league.

Minnesota is slightly ahead of us by SRS. Naz Reid could give Hart a fit on the defensive end. Mitch vs Gobert is the heavy weight bout of the century.

Miami is actually 21st at -1.31, despite their record. Their point differential is 0.0 and they’ve played an easy schedule. Not that we should underestimate them.

About Grimes or DDV starting, it’s a good question and if knowledgeable people can answer it, it’ll be good for the discussion. But we all know what will happen… Thibs making changes when everything is going according to plan? šŸ˜€

Winning easily is very tasty against Boston, the Lakers, Miamiā€¦ šŸ˜€

Hahaha, you got me, Max. Yeah, it’s winning easily against bottom teams that’s boring. šŸ˜‰

Iā€™m going to say it. The knicks do not need to gut the roster and use up a bunch of picks to grab a superstar.

The knicks should make one or two smaller Josh Hart level moves (or maybe one that is a step above that kind of a move) to shore up the rotation.

Grimes plus Fournier plus two or three first round picks for OG. Move RJ back to shooting guard. Gives us a great wing defender and good three point shooter.

Then pick up Taj to be the back up 4. Would only play ten or so minutes a night behind Randle but heā€™s competent enough that if Randle gets hurt for a stretch or is just having a bad game or series, gives thins another option he can trust. Yak can even stretch the floor a bit with corner threes.

Also, thibs. Please give McBride some nightly minutes. Itā€™s a long season and Bryson cannot get worn down. McBride has looked good in limited minutes this year. His defense is great and he now appears to be shooting with confidence and hitting shots too.

Letā€™s replicate the 2005 pistons. A complete squad one through 10 with no top ten talent but a lot of top 50 dudes and no real weaknesses in the rotation.

    @nyknicks:
JB was in his bag all weekend ā€¼ļø
    Friday: 32 PTS | 7 REB | 7 AST
    Saturday: 32 PTS | 8 AST | 3 REB

So he was heading for regression, right?

the defense looks legit.. but again.. probably not #5 good… but probably somewhere between 5-10 good depending on where our TOV% ends up.. the offense is the thing that’s mostly smoke and mirrors and that’s generally because we’ve been hot from 3…

here are the biggest candidates for regression…
    brunson – .477
    barret – .467
    divicenzo – .400
    grimes -.397

randle is just about the only guy who’s shooting unsustainably low (.284) but with his ft% also being near career lows (.671) this could also just be the reverse empty gym year for him…. still it should get over .300 … how much more is anyone’s guess but expecting a big year for him there probably isn’t happening… he’s still also still leading the league in blocked shots with 24… he’s playing better of late but the efficiency still isn’t there in these cream puff games….

we’re very dependent on 3s and o-reb… the o-boards seems repeatable.. altho to the extent that we’re beating teams seems pretty ridiculuous but i believe in the career year for mitch out of everyone….. whenever the 3s stop falling is when we’ll see what we really are….

If RJ turns back into a pumpkin, Iā€™ll be so sad, Iā€™ll have to write a Magical Realist short story about it to process…

Even though RJā€™s been bad in the past, he seems like a great kid, and Iā€™m rooting for him. And a new-and-improved RJ could push us even further in the playoffs.

Re: Donte starting, the Nova crew chemistry is palpable. I wouldnā€™t be surprised if all three of them were starting at some point (ideally alongside a major star).

Everyone is rooting for RJ. Feels like hope against hope for some but nothing else makes us a real contender like him having a true breakout.

Who else in the NBA really projects to be a better defense? I will buy the Celtics. Maybe the Wolves with Gobert. They are off to a great start. The Bucks arenā€™t convincing with Jrue gone. The Magic are #1. The Rockets are ahead of us.

5 to me looks like a floor for us if our centers are healthy.

What I really like about this team is how they take care of business against bad teams. Road wins against any team are not givens, especially with back to backs.

And Jalen Brunson is a huge part of this, not just because of his overall scoring, but the way he always gets the big buckets that kill the opponents’ comebacks. And the rest of the team feeds off of that, you just see a confidence in them that they’re not gonna let a bad team even sniff a lead.

Can’t wait till tomorrow’s game vs. the Wolves, big test for us.

We were 3rd in offense last year, I think we’ll be fine. The 2p% and 3p% will probably flip, but there isn’t enough change on our team for me to think we’ll fall out of the top-10.

“What I really like about this team is how they take care of business against bad teams.”

Yes and no. In both of these recent wins we burst out of the gate, built a 10-15 pt lead, then went into cruise control, let the other team whittle it down to 6-10 pts, spent most of both games there, and only stomped back into 6th gear the last half of the fourth to pull away.

It’s the NBA, everyone is effing good, but I’d have felt a tad bit better if we’d slowly built the lead to 20-25 and THEN cruised home. It felt definitely do-able.

On the other hand, LaMelo Ball hitting rainbow three after rainbow three was kind of fun (and frustrating) to watch. And that long skinny kid felt a tad bit like watching baby Durant.

Thanks for the recap Max, I’m looking forward to the weekend edition. Maybe do weekly grades instead of individual games.

I love the idea of offering a package for OG. At this point it looks like Grimes, Fournier and picks would seem the most logical deal.

    reposted

RJ had a rough night. Normally Iā€™d just ignore an off night off a series of missed games, but when Iā€™ve done that with RJ in the past, the off night lasted a couple of weeks. So weā€™ll see.

Iā€™m not advocating for starting DDV over Grimes yet, but heā€™s the superior offensive player right now because of his experience, confidence and aggression.

Granted the last 2 games were against two of the worst defensive teams in the NBA, but the ball and player movement looks a lot better now than to start the season. Weā€™ll see how it looks against the T-Wolves.

The Knicks are not going to keep hitting 3s at the rate they have over the last few games.

CHA is really missing Dennis Smith, Jr. Yes, really.

Don’t worry. Frank will be back soon to straighten out their defense. šŸ˜‰

jalen drawing 20 offensive fouls in 13 games is crazy

I think you can make a decent case that Brunson’s overall defense has been better this year. I’m not keeping notes, but I don’t find myself shaking my head as much this year.

Grimes plus Fournier plus two or three first round picks for OG. Move RJ back to shooting guard. Gives us a great wing defender and good three point shooter.

That’s my best idea right now also. OG solves a LOT of problems.

I’d like to see some more of RJ first and maybe see him try to defend at SG a little first.

I had always found Quentin Grimes’ passivity and lack of ability to fill a boxscore frustrating, but he has taken it to even higher levels this season: fewer rebounds, lower usage, nonexistent free throw rate. Quentin Grimes is 0-1 in free throws in 272 minutes. Literally zero free throws made.

Charlotte’s defensive strategy seemingly revolved around leaving Donte wide open, so we probably won’t see this again

Charlotte actually misses Terry Rozier in the back court. At full strength, they will be a much more competitive team.

Grimes definitely is frustrating. If he werenā€™t an excellent defender he would be completely maddening.

I think of Grimes as they Keith Bogans nominal starter at this point. As long as he is providing solid defense, he is fine in the starting unit. We have IQ to provide the offensive boost when we need it.

I know that we’ve already acknowledged Chet’s great night last night, but I’d like to mention Wemby’s 8 blocked shots? That’s good for a rookie in his 13th-ever career game, right? šŸ™‚

I hope both of these guys stay healthy. It could be an amazing rivalry for the next 8-10 years not like anything we’ve had recently (LeBron vs. Durant never quite became a “thing,” for whatever reasons).

Last night there were 6 games played in the NBA, 5 of them had teams lose despite having a double digit lead in the 2nd half. The Knicks game was the lone exception.

Did not know that about Wemby.

My biggest surprise from the box scores was that Chicago won. They were down 20-1 to start the game. Which I guess dovetails with BBAā€™s point.

And yes, I had a typo above when I inadvertently used a question mark instead of a period. See? I don’t *only* point out the errors of others…….I also take ownership of my own errors!

Good thing I only make one or two mistakes per year. (That’s a joke, fellas.)

I have never been wrong so I canā€™t relate.

Novak Djokovic btw just tore apart the young pretenders. They combined to get only 11 games off him in four sets. Just astonishing how good he still is.

Good thing I only make one or two mistakes per year. (Thatā€™s a joke, fellas.)

I have never been wrong so I canā€™t relate.

Hahaha, you guys are reminding me of a portuguese prime minister that said the following “i rarely have doubts and i’m never wrong”. šŸ˜€

Oh, I wouldn’t have even noticed. I figured you were using the question mark to denote your surprise that nobody else had noticed it.

Too bad you mentioned it, this page has been bookmarked and you will forever live in shame. Doogie’s questionmark is the new incineration, the new Frank, the new whatever was before that!!!

Mark Question didnā€™t start but was always there to assist Mark Katen in the fourth period.

Charlotte actually misses Terry Rozier in the back court. At full strength, they will be a much more competitive team.

I agree. Bridges and Rozier have been out. They have also been missing rotation pieces like Frank and Cody Martin that they could used with Rozier out. They should be a lot tougher over the 2nd half.

Say what you will about NFL teams but they donā€™t understand how to tank

Oh they do, it’s just the Giants that haven’t figured it out.

Saleh should be fired immediately after this game for keeping this bust in the game no matter how many 3 and outs he runs up. Or maybe at halftime…

The way that we watch the journeys of players such as Obi and Hali (yes, I do this, as well) who we used to have or who we failed to try hard enough to acquire reminds me of those guys who stalk the Facebook pages of ex-girlfriends or “the ones who got away” to “see what they’re up to nowadays” (something I’ve never done). Disclaimer: I don’t have a Facebook account. Never have; never will. šŸ™‚

Nor should we! That wasn’t my point at all—as I said, I do it, too. I just think the psychological aspect of it is very interesting in a “grass is always greener” and/or “we want what we cannot have” (or in our case, “we want who we didn’t bother to draft”) kind of way.

In the Obi case for me, as with Frank, it’s just hoping he gets over the hump and turns into a well-rounded, good player. I liked the guy when he was here, I hope all the best for him going forward.

Very different from my ex-partners. Very, very different.

That’s a pretty bad performance for the Pacers…at home, full strength, well-rested, against a non-elite team.

Obi has a chance, sure. Frank? Unfortunately, that poor kid never had a chance, and still doesn’t.

KP is beasting on both sides of the ball. At his healthiest for NY heā€™d give us a half or maybe three quarters of a game of beast on one side. Now heā€™s beatsting on both sides for a full game and making game winning plays to finish on both sides. Iā€™m not sure what they are putting in the water in Boston, but they have him in the best shape of his life and happy for the first time in his career. Heā€™s playing great two way basketball.

Knox is not as naturally talented as Cam on either side, but heā€™s similar to Cam in that you can visualize a good offensive player there, but heā€™s so damn lost on the court (especially on defense) so much of time heā€™s a mess.

Z-Man was right about Frank from day 1. Heā€™s not a PG. His career was short circuited the moment Phil was out and the Knicks tried to turn him into a PG instead of trying to develop him into what he could be. He was a disruptive switchable unselfish defensive player that could make some plays that desperately needed a 3 point shot. Whatever chance he had left to become a solid 3&D player after that was demolished by constant injuries crushing his development.

I still think Obi is destined to become a solid high energy guy off the bench.

Frank Ntilikina is a garden variety draft bust who never had the skill set to make it in the NBA as anything but back-of-roster filler. Thereā€™s no need to rationalize the reasons why he is not a good NBA player. Itā€™s really not that hard to say ā€œI was wrong about that guy, he stinks,ā€ but some people are just constitutionally unable to do that.

The Timberwolves and the Thunder have two of the three leading SRS numbers in the western conference and are in the six to seven range. Iā€™m not sure anyone would have expected that. The Nuggets are the other team in that range. After that no one in the Western conference is over three.

In the East the Knicks are third with a value around six, way behind Philly and Boston but well ahead of the Pacers in fourth. Tomorrowā€™s game should be a good test for us.

And I notice that there are only six teams with a positive SRS in the Western conference compared to ten in the East. I still donā€™t see it that the West is the stronger conference.

I donā€™t think that SRS is useful in any grand scheme. The Nuggets dominated the playoffs last year simply by giving Jokic 6 more minutes a game. If he was playing 40 minutes in the regular season, theyā€™d probably be number one and look like a sure repeater. Thatā€™s gonna happen again in the West this year.

Queta getting some burn for the Celts. cybersoze will be happy!
