New York vs Charlotte W 120-99 Record 7-5 (1-1 Silver Cup)

Welcome to the NBA, where you can win one game and improve your position in two competitions.
What Mr. Silver? They do this in Europe and you’re only copying a century old format? Sorry but no, we don’t.

By the way, we were lucky drawing two punching bags in our “group”, now our chances to advance in the never-enough-praised Silver Cup* revolve around next friday’s home game against the Heat.

The real game was so easy to allow the season’s debut of a bald clochard we found on the sidewalk, but I like the way we’re brushing sad sacks aside, even when we’re down two starters and we’re not so eager to play.

Next: another B2B in Charlotte, against a team so desperate** that they decided to employ Miles The Rascal in a shameful hope to improve.

    * As an aside, most of the ad hoc jerseys are hideous and some of the “special courts” are terrible.

** They’re fresh from a “L” by 31 at home against the “oh they’re panicking” Bucks despite Lamelo’s 37 points.

    (Stray) Thoughts:

    – 60% of my road without hot takes is gone, I’m itching to let them go šŸ™‚

    – The NBA owes its fans to stop rewarding losers.
Washington, Portland, whoever, you can’t have teams in checkout mode at game-12 of the season.
Where’s senator McCarthy when you need him? Let’s quell these reds’ behaviours!

    – RJ was seen laughing and smiling in the locker room before the game, so much that beat writers were surprised he didn’t play.
I totally get the move, let him rest some more before a B2B and try to avoid making this game a farce, we were too strong even without him.

-Thumbs up for Glue Grimes’ stylish wrist tutor, it gave me Jesus Quintana vibes and I love Jesus Quintana.

    – I feel for Gallo. Trade deadline will never come too fast for you my friend and don’t forget Olimpia’s waiting for you with open arms (can you imagine playing with Mirotic and Melli? A basketball-IQ earthquake…).

    – I love Draymond Green as a basketball player, I dislike him on nearly anything else. But every time I watch Jordan Poole play I feel a little bit closer to Draymond.

    – There was a sequence when, after an I-Hart offensive foul, the cameras went to Thibs and you could lip read him saying “Come on man” over and over. It was mesmerizing.

    Play(s) Of The Game:

Arriving in DC and putting 5 players on the floor. It was enough.

    But wait!

4th 3:44 Jalen Brunson vs. Corey Kispert (Julius Randle gains possession) NY 105 WAS 92

Jalen Brunson won a jumpball for the first time since he was in 5th grade.
Corey Kispert dug a hole on the floor, jumped in it and he wasn’t seen again.

    Stats Of The Game:

    0. Washington largest lead.

48-32. Knicks’ rebounding dominance (14 Offensive)

    Grades:

    Brunson A
    He’s shooting 47.5% from 3… and 39.7% from 2!
7:0 AST:TO ratio is good and he took 3 offensive rebounds. 77 points in 2 Silver Cup games, if only every game including playoffs could be a Cup game (I’m joking Mr. Silver)…

    Randle B+
According to Wally, every time Ju did a good thing his ankle is making progress, every time he did something stupid his ankle is limiting him.
Between 22 points, annoying isos, 8 AST, 6 TO, some nice bullyball baskets, frequent instances of traffic cone defense Wally had a lot to talk about.

    Robinson B-
Good day to take a day off. He did his job without breaking a sweat, nice.

    Quickley A
Do you think he’s feeling the competition with Maxey? He put the Wiz last hopes to bed in the 4th and he was playing before his mom (so sweet) so I’ll forgive him for the garbage time points.

    Hart A-
By far the best +/- of the team (+27 in 32 minutes), you can see how much he loves playing with his Nova dogs.

    Hartenstein C+
Mr. Organized Chaos did just that, he organized chaos. Some dumb fouls.

    DDV B+
Very good 1st half, in the 2nd he took a moment to remember us that (some) white men can jump.

    McBride B+
14 minutes of dogged defense with a couple of baskets mixed in, good job Deuce.

    Fournier C
I’m not surprised by a shooter just dusted off naphthalene having trouble with his offensive rhythm but he put effort in his 16 minutes debut and he even had a couple of decent defensive play.
When you’re sad think about the 18.857.000 flowing to your bank account and be patient, TDL is coming Papillon and BTW there’s always the Euroleague (that so far this year has been fantastic).

    Arcidiacono/Jeffries/Sims NA
Always a pleasure to see you guys.

    Thibs A
Easy games are the worst. He had a hard time keeping players awake at halftime and needed a couple of timeouts to hoard a crew eager to go partying in the capital.
So far this year, in my opinion, we’re doing exactly what we’re expected to do, so he’s doing his job well.

Great stuff Max! The Kispert line got a hearty chuckle. Excellent comedy throughout this one actually.

This might be a little harsh, but even without RJ and Grimes- we should have been able to put them away earlier. With the way Poole is playing, it should be easier to defend the Wizards. Damn near every shot is a bad shot for him and he’s super loosey goosey with the handle. Somehow he doesn’t realize that he’s not in The Bay anymore and he now has to be more strategic with his offense. The Dubs made off like Madoff(pre-indictment) with that trade. Give him a bag and send him to a sucker lol. But thankfully, our guys realized who we are in the 4th and pulled away like a Model 3 Plaid in “cheetah” mode.

Ok..I’m done with the cheesy one liners. Randle is back to his old self, and I can honestly live with the turnovers if he’s scoring, rebounding, and distributing like he is. It’s working. The Fournier sighting was nice too. Brunson was unstoppable when he wanted it and him, Hart, and DDV looked like they were still at Nova in that starting lineup. It was an expected, but solid win.

    Godspeed RJ and Grimes

And by the way…being a Marylander, last night was the first time I caught that Kith commercial with Josh Hart and Jalen Brunson. I thought that was dope

Why did I wrote ā€œvs. Charlotteā€ and didnā€™t notice it until now? šŸ™

The court was Hornet teal instead of any color found on a Wizards jersey… plus we play Charlotte tonight

Great recap as usual, Max! Missed the game due to hanging out for dinner and drinks in the East Village while meeting my 26yo daughter’s boyfriend for the first time (they’ve been dating since January!) She has already turned him into a casual Knicks fan, so they were very understanding as I followed the game sporadically on espn play-by-play. Seems like it was a good game to miss.

Nice recap, Max. The funniest line is the header – Knicks v Charlotte. I think that’s about how seriously our team took this game. Which you nailed in this line:

    Play(s) Of The Game:

Arriving in DC and putting 5 players on the floor.

Owen, I think the reason people aren’t more positive on the game threads is that they haven’t adjusted to the new reality yet. Remember when we were terrible and made fake comebacks against good teams, comebacks we all knew would fail? That’s what we’re seeing again, except now we’re the good team. So Poindexter, we did actually do what good teams do. It’s really rare to crush an NBA team for 48 minutes.

I donā€™t know about Grimes, but I think RJ will be back tonight. I think he was probably ready to go last night, but they figured they could beat the Wizards without him and avoid playing him on a B2B and putting any strain on his knee.

I think the Knicks were essentially coasting the whole game and then stepped on the pedal in the 4th quarter. You can get away with that against the Wizards, but it can bite you in the ass against a decent team.

That game was about as fun as having to meet your daughterā€™s new boyfriend (Iā€™m sure heā€™s a great guy, Z). In fact, I turned it off at the half and chose to clean the kitchen instead.

Glad we took care of business, though. Randleā€™s shot looks better, but those turnoversā€¦

I canā€™t imagine how humiliating it must have been to be a Wizards fan at the game last night. First you have to watch your awful team getting their asses kicked and then at the end hear a really loud ā€œLetā€™s Go Knicksā€ chant.

Better them than us I guess!

The game thread was down on the Knicks because it wasn’t a 20pt win until pretty late. With 9:30 left it was a 5pt game and the Knicks were playing sloppy.

But Washington’s regulars didn’t hit another shot from the field the rest of the way

“That game was about as fun as having to meet your daughterā€™s new boyfriend (Iā€™m sure heā€™s a great guy, Z).”

i really liked him! And so long as he’s not a Celtics fan it’s all good!

I thought the first quarter was fun. I also thought the second half of the fourth quarter was fun. The rest of the game sucked big time. Julius stuffed the box score, especially with the six turnovers, which were indicative of but not the whole story of his overall suckitude in this game. Just bad decision-making and Melo-level iso offensiveness.

It was a win over a hapless foe, but I didn’t like it at all. Well, I didn’t like over half of it.

I wonder how much of Brunsonā€™s subpar 2p% is noise vs. spacing/defensive adjustments vs. him spending so much time working on his 3 pointer he neglected working on other things?

Great summary Max – and on point with everything.

I think we’ll see much of the same tonight but maybe RJ will be back. I get ocular migraines but not regular ones so I can’t judge how it impacts a person.

I can’t see Grimes back yet. If they rest him today and Monday, the next game is Friday and that gives him ample time to fully heal that hand.

I wonder how much of Brunsonā€™s subpar 2p% is noise vs. spacing/defensive adjustments vs. him spending so much time working on his 3 pointer he neglected working on other things?

my guess is literally none of it is related to preferentially practicing 3s. i think noise is likely the largest contributor, at least by plurality, i think defenses “adjusting” to our offense is likely a fairly small contributor.

rather, i think the second and third largest contributors are the decision-making of mitch and jalen respectively. my take on mitch is that he has so heavily embraced his offensive role as a rebounding demon that he often fails to relocate from the dunker’s spot into a threatening position, even relative to last year, and fails to roll as aggressively on the pnr or when slipping screens. even on the crowded catch underneath, mitch suddenly seems more likely to look to kick it out than go up and finish or get fouled than he has in past years.

perhaps not unrelatedly, jalen has on average looked for mitch less in the roll and off the dunker’s spot than usual. he has always been a shoot first guard at heart, but it’s been extreme ytd with mitch in the game. while some of this can also be attributed to defenses adjusting. t paint packing and the specific defenses we happen to have faced early, my take is that much if it is idiosyncratic to mitch and jalen.

for no reason in particular i would like to reiterate that people fail to appreciate the import of quickley’s amazing defense. i attribute this to him being such an usual defender — not actually great at one on one defense and not quite long enough or strong enough to be truly disruptive.

but i am serious when i say he is the best positional off ball defender for a guard i have even seen. it’s crazy to watch him play the aaron gordon role of literally guarding the back door of all 5 opponents while also closing out corner to corner on swing swing threes. it is just so stark on a team with randle, who while being a pretty damn decent switch and perimeter defender, is a bottom decile help defender at best. i think when someone is so crazy good at something that is so unusual and doesn’t tabulate much, it is easy to just consider a tick in the plus column as opposed to granting the higher utility weighting it merits.

I wonder how much of Brunsonā€™s subpar 2p% is noise vs. spacing/defensive adjustments vs. him spending so much time working on his 3 pointer he neglected working on other things?

It seems like it’s harder for him get the space he needs on many of his inside the arc maneuvering.

Did he lose some of his lift?

Does the defense expects his moves? (I think it’s unlikely this early in the season).

I don’t think it’s a Mitch issue, Brunson is missing mid range shots that don’t involve Mitch at all.

Nice recap Max. Your work is always accurate and funny… The Knicks have never lost in Charlotte with me in attendance, so I’ll be there to make sure there is no let down… I have been one of RJ’s biggest detractors, but I hope he is back tonight. If he and IQ can play 4.0 bpm ball for the whole year, we have a good chance of being the 3 seed in the East with a puncher’s chance at the finals.

PT – Doesnā€™t he rate out as one of the top 5 perimeter players defensively over the last couple years? I feel like that number was floating around twitter, along with Grimes having the toughest matchup difficulty in the NBA.

He is really good on defense and also very good and high usage on offense. Also unafraid of the big moments.

I have said this a bunch but I think IQ is our best player and itā€™s a little crazy we didnā€™t lock him up.

Yeah I can see why Quickley wants more money and a starting role. If Iā€™m the T-Wolves, Iā€™d do a Randle/Quick for Towns trade in a heartbeat (if Iā€™m the Knicks, I say no!)
He would be a perfect fit next to Edwardsā€¦ man, I really hope that trade doesnā€™t happen.

pt, based on your glowing appraisal of IQ’s defensive value and his more obvious abilities on O, how much do you think he is worth in the context of him being an impending RFA? Because what you are describing is essentially a max player, isn’t it?

In other words, would it be worth it to Jaylen Brown him, i.e. make him (possibly by far) the highest player on the team just due to market conditions even though it could be argued that other players are much more important, although in this case, the argument might be wrong?

ess, the team I’m most worried about breaking the bank for IQ is the Sixers. They have a ton of expirings and he’d be a great fit next to his old friend Maxey.

What is the Wolves’ pick situation? I’d consider it if we could get good pick compensation as well- as the combo of Randle & Quickley is better than KAT. Randle and KAT are even caliber..Quickley is the prize. I only said consider lol…we need to keep Quickley if he’ll embrace his 6th starter role. He’s not “just” a 6th man.

Also..DDV made a strong case to start over Grimes with his quick decision making and ball movement. His chemistry with Brunson is super clear. Grimes better find his shot in a hurry because the way DDV plays on offense next to Brunson is good enough to split the difference between he and Grimes on defense

I think if IQ went to the Sixers you’d end up in a situation like where Lazarus is left wrestling with his alternative universe self for eternity in that Star Trek episode. If we’re lucky enough not to have both universes destroyed. So I’d be against that trade.

Unless we got Embiid. That might be worth the risk…

The Wizards are one of the least serious NBA teams I’ve ever seen. There are enough talented guys on that roster to be a regular bad team but they don’t look like they’re trying to win at all.

Great ‘cap, Max. Nice to have a team that takes care of business.

pt, I’m no scout and have never considered myself all that good at recognizing truly great defense, but after Katz highlighted it I made a point to really focus on Quickley defensively and I totally concur. He is just relentlessly in the right spot, or guiding someone else there.

His box score numbers are pretty damn good in their own right, but this seems like the reason his box score + impact numbers always tend to be star caliber.

The Wizards are one of the least serious NBA teams Iā€™ve ever seen. There are enough talented guys on that roster to be a regular bad team but they donā€™t look like theyā€™re trying to win at all.

I would rather have Abbot and Costello signed to 4 years deals than Poole and Kuzma. They can probably eventually trade Kuzma’s declining contract and get something worthwhile back, but only a crazy person would let Poole anywhere near their organization. I can’t stand Draymond, but he gets a pass from me for KO’ing Poole.

pt, based on your glowing appraisal of IQā€™s defensive value and his more obvious abilities on O, how much do you think he is worth in the context of him being an impending RFA? Because what you are describing is essentially a max player, isnā€™t it?

well i wouldn’t have offered him a max extension given rfa leverage, and also bc as much as a i love quick i don’t think he entered the year a no brainer at 25%. although as you probably remember i think fred katz’ depiction our offer as in line with his league-survey fair value of $16-$20mm was, if true, far too low.

    https://knickerblogger.net/2023/10/25/knicks-morning-news-2023-10-25/

In other words, would it be worth it to Jaylen Brown him, i.e. make him (possibly by far) the highest player on the team just due to market conditions even though it could be argued that other players are much more important, although in this case, the argument might be wrong?

we don’t have to worry about jaylen brown 35% money since quickley will be capped at 25%. and now that we missed the extension deadline what we pay him will be closer to a binary decision whether to match the market (even if not literally by offer sheet) than anything else. and if it does come down to the 25% max or lose him for nothing or nearly nothing, i would sign the dotted line unless something surprising develops between now and then.

and whether he’s more important than jalen will quickly become moot when jalen’s salary jumps the follow season.

I’ve been screaming about Quickley for quite awhile now and started calling him the best two way player on the team late last year. The Knicks go as Quickley goes. That’s why I’m really hoping one of his improvements for this year is more consistent shooting. If he has a bad few weeks for whatever reason, so will the Knicks. And of course, we need him at 100% in the playoffs.

and btw i still think there is a decent chance the market for quick ends up materially south of the 25% max and we keep him for less. rfa is a minefield and it was always possible that being extension stingy could have worked out for a 180 pound sixth man you’re playing 25 mpg with no good playoff history. i just think the risk reward wildly favors him being worth more than 15pct of the cap in his prime and you needed to at least make him say no to $120 million before risking having to match a shorter $30-$35mm deal with a player option. i also worry the offer reflects undervaluation that might show up in a trade.

Thanks, pt, and yes, I do remember that thread and your posts well. So 25% of cap is somewhere in the $35M AAV range, with 5% raises taking him north of $40M by contract’s end, right? Ignoring what he will ultimately be offered or accept, where do you think the absolute drop-dead ceiling be for him? Because, as I said, if you believe in IQ’s offense (and by extension, think it is transferrable to a starting role at the same or higher usage, see: OKC’s James Harden) you are describing a max-level player. If he gets offered that 25% by another team, do you match or walk?

Letā€™s get one thing clear about Devoā€™s biggest hit of all time: ā€œWhip Itā€ is not a song about masturbation, or S&M

    well now, that’s disappointing šŸ˜ž

Well Geo, you’ve always got Turning Japanese by The Vapors

If the NBA hits its 10% max cap raise, then 25% will be ~37.5M.

This is the risk of not extending, if the player goes off, then the raise is gargantuan. If the player stays the same or regresses, it might not fall that much.

Still a long ways to go in the season and IQ is shooting flames from every part of the court right now. Maybe RFA will save us a little bit, but we are approaching the “we’re just spending Dolan bucks anyway” financial stage… hopefully Jimmy doesn’t get tightfisted when the Sphere loses another $100M

i swear d-mar that tune starts rolling through my head at the oddest moments…i think i’m turning japanese, i think i’m turning japanese, i really think so…it can potentially go on for a few minutes…

could be worse, could have “whip it good” plaguing my mind…

alright, i’m just gonna say it – devo kinda sucked…there, i am now unburdened from the thought that first struck me when i saw: DiVo…

i get the last name nickname…devo was very underwhelming though…now, the DDT – that was art…

It must have exhausted him. He’s only got 16 minutes per season in him these days.

Fournier our tonight after one game

It was all the effort he was putting in on defense…so unfamiliar, his body couldn’t take it…

I totally would have done 5/110 for IQ. Lots of different numbers out there, and if we only offered 5/80, he was right to turn that down. But if it’s also true he wanted 5/140, we were right to turn that down.
