    New York @ Milwaukee L 105-110 Record 2-4 (Dumb Cup 0-1)

Welcome to Adam Silver’s NBA, where you can lose one game and worsen you’re record in 2 different standings.

The simple fact this game wasn’t over until Dame Time made me feel like an LSD multiverse traveller for most of it, the end helped me find some reassuring grip with the reality once again.

Short edition, it’s the weekend and family rules.

Have a nice weekend folks and remember: no hot takes here (until game-20).

    Thoughts:

    – This team never quit* and to me that’s their best trait.
It’s a Thibs’ trademark, maybe even more than defense, and it’s a shining medal to pin on his chest.
Would I like to talk about his offensive schemes? Or rotation flexibility? No, thank you.

    * Yes, I know some players sometimes do (ahem), but as a team? Very rarely.

    – We’ve gone to the wire, and lost, in a couple of close games with real contenders.
I don’t see it as an harbinger of great things to come.
We’re going to be better (we can’t shoot like this all season long, right?) but they made radical changes in the offseason and need time to gel, while our only meaningful novelty is our 8th man who plays less than 20 minutes a game.
We are expected to take advantage of roster continuity and players familiarity, so there’s not much progress to do for us there, while the Celtics and the Bucks…

    – On the subject: the Bucks were horrible, but it’s “inctellectually honest” to give them some time, Dame and Giannis must learn to play together and they have a new (and for now let’s say “not impressive”) coach.
And yes, Adrian Griffin is the reason Terry Stotts reached “a friendly agreement” to leave the Bucks after an heated argument (not the first, said the rumors) in front of the players. Newcomer’s insecurity or veteran’s arrogance?

    – I’ll repeat myself: Brunson didn’t deserve to lose this game.

    – For the second consecutive game I missed RJ a lot. Bitter sweet feeling of the season so far.

    – I’m already seasick thinking about monday and James Harden.
I hate his playing style and antics like I hate flies in the soup.

    Play(s) Of The Game:

4th 1:10 Jalen Brunson makes 25-foot three point jumper (Julius Randle assists) NY 103 MILW 101
    4th 1:10 Bucks Full timeout
4th 1:03 Damian Lillard makes 27-foot three point jumper (Giannis Antetokounmpo assists) NY 103 MILW 104
4th 48.1 Jalen Brunson misses 10-foot two point shot
4th 45.0 Khris Middleton defensive rebound
4th 37.2 Damian Lillard makes layup (Khris Middleton assists) NY 103 MILW 106
4th 37.2 Quentin Grimes shooting foul
    4th 37.2 Damian Lillard makes free throw 1 of 1 NY 103 MILW 107
4th 29.2 Brook Lopez blocks Julius Randle ‘s 4-foot driving layup
4th 28.0 Knicks offensive team rebound
4th 18.0 Brook Lopez blocks Julius Randle ‘s 7-foot two point shot
4th 17.1 Bucks defensive team rebound

Knicks take the lead! Knicks take the lead!
    For 7 seconds (excluding timeouts).
Dame Time, Grimes’ rookie mistake (wait, it’s been a while since he was a rookie) and Lopez volleyball defense did the rest.

    Stats Of The Game:

    38-96 (39.6%). Knicks’ FG%.
JB’s barrage did help a lot.

56-41 (tot)/16-7(off). Knicks’ domination under the boards.
    My new mantra:
if you shoot 100% you’ll have zero offensive rebound, but you’ll be happier.

    Grades:

    Brunson A
42 minutes for the Little General so I forgive him for his 4 TOs.

    Randle D-
A slightly better game than the last one, so a slightly better grade.
Is he the main reason we’re struggling? Yes.
Will he get better? He better be!

    Grimes B-
11 Shots! OMG 11 shots! Good game, he loses half a grade for Dame’s final and-1.

    Robinson B-
0-4? Wassup Mitch? 15 Rebounds, “only” 6 offensive. A rock.

    Quickley B+
    Cold start (3 pts, 1-5 1st half) hot reaction (11 pts, 4-5 2nd half).

    Hart C+
I can’t be too harsh with him, he’s not here to score: 10 REB, 5 AST, 3 STL.

    Hartenstein C
Not his best version but still useful.

    DDV D
Our summer crown jewel had a bad day.

    McBride NA
2 minutes cameo, just enough to miss a shot.

    Thibs D
Start IQ you old stubborn mule!
The Bucks are big, but 39 minutes of “this” Randle are depressing.
8 men rotation plus Deuce’s cameo?
Also, I’m wondering who’s the target of Evan’s new shirt: “va te faire foutre”.

    Dear Knickerblogger —

    Do u miss me?

    Signed, your friend

    Rowan Barrett, Jr. (#9)

    1. We have to stop torturing ourselves hoping Randle is eventually going to put it all together in terms of basketball IQ, consistent effort, consistent performance, and playoff performance. He’s not. This is him. The only things consistent about him are inconsistency and bad decision making.

    2. Grimes, Hart and DDV are all very good role players that bring different things to the table, but they are alike in that they are all very low usage role players. We don’t need all 3. One has to go. Of the 3, Grimes is youngest and shows the most upside. Keep him unless he’s part of an important big deal.

    3. Even with RJ playing, Quickley is a critical part of the team because he plays both sides and can create his own shot. He’s not a high level offensive player, but he’s good. When you add in his other attributes, he’s very good. With RJ out, we are missing a lot of shot creation. You almost have to be brain damage level stupid to not being giving him a LOT more minutes now. He played 21 minutes yesterday. Thibs is a stubborn idiot.

    4. This team needs a mini reset.

    a. Get a backup PF for defensive purposes so when it’s required we can match up.

    b. The DDV signing was a waste. He’s going to be hot some nights and make us happy we have him, but overall he’s no better than Grimes or Hart. Move on.

    c. Randle HAS TO go. Get whatever you can, just get him out of NY or this team is doomed to mediocrity with no path at all to serious contention.

    d. If Thibs doesn’t get his act together as far as minutes and rotations go, it’s time for the press to start bringing the heat. We are losing potentially winnable games because he’s so stubborn.

“Hey, the only thing we need this offseason is another one of those” really wasn’t the right reaction to reviewing the Josh Hart/Quentin Grimes playoff game film.

    Just sayin’.

the possession down 1 under a minute after brunson missed the banker was putrid. first, mitch is under the bucks’ basket yet beats the entire team downcourt. then lopez sets a blatant moving screen on hart, who proceeds to get up and turn to bark at the ref as opposed to recovering. mitch is essentially in a 2 on 1 with all his teammates at half court and has to race over to help. brunson runs back to cover the corner mitch vacated and grimes gets badly beat by an unscreened backdoor lillard cut. the paint is wide open as randle for some reason is standing flat footed at the top of key watching middleton dribble while giannis stands 35 feet from the hoop. watch randle the entire play and tell me he’s not staging a sit-in against the adam silver cup.

also, not bringing quickley back down 4 in the last 30 seconds of the game was strange coaching.

I just watched a clip of that last possession….Randle’s effort is inexcusable but thibs ignores it all the time..

I don’t get how Mitch is shooting 41% from the field so far this season and has scored in single digits in all 6 games, including last night’s zero points. I get that he’s low usage and all, but come on.

They seem to be looking for Mitch less than they did his rookie year. Almost like he is just focused on o-boards and occupying defenders that way rather than any pretense of being available for a pass.

Randle has been really bad. This is some of the worst basketball I have ever seen from an All NBA player. He looks skinny compared to the physique he had last year. I don’t know what’s going on but it would be great if we had another power forward.

I am sure he will come around but it’s terrible to watch.

    To whit… from Tommy Beer

    According to @bball_ref:

Julius Randle is the first player in NBA history to average more than 15 FG attempts per game over the first five games of a season and shoot:
below 30% from the field and
below 30% from three-point territory and
below 65% from the free-throw line

Interesting piece on Brook Lopez (8 blocks last night) in The Athletic. I always feel like he and Giannis tend to bring Mitch back to earth, more so than most teams. Although 15 rebounds is hard to argue with.

The Knicks’ TS+ as a team is 88.

For perspective on how horrible that is, RJ Barrett’s TS+ last year was 91.

It’s not just Randle. He’s the worst offender but almost everybody on the team is desperately struggling to score.

It’s not just Randle. He’s the worst offender but almost everybody on the team is desperately struggling to score.

    Little ball movement.

    Little player movement.

    No innovative plays.

    Bad spacing.

    Bad shot selection.

    Bad shooting.

All ISO trash from the bowels of hell.

i don’t subscribe to the Athletic but was just going to post about the lopez blocks last night…. here’s all the interesting ones… (ie. mostly randle )

    1. Here’s a Randle drive in the half… Lopez steps up early gets what would’ve normally been a fade in floater range last year… now blocked…

    2. Hart driving layup.. Lopez has good timing on the weakside block…

    3. Quickley forces a drive and Lopez sends it…

    4. Lopez has eyes on Randle the whole time on the iso…

    5. Randle Iso on Giannis… super hard spin hook.. in floater range again… Lopez has eyes the whole time….

most of these are iso related and the problem is that we are not looking at Mitch.. or we are forcing moves that only lead to one outcome… a very difficult highly contested shot…

Brunson’s seeing this also… he loves operating in floater range and there’s just a ton of resistance this year as defenders are on his hip and defenders are stepping up early.. …

here’s dame’s block on brunson in the 4th last night… but if dame didn’t get it lopez probably would’ve….

so yea we’re forcing a lot of drives… we did that last year but teams were apparently happy to go into drop coverage and give us floaters and we hit them pretty well…

    no gimmes anymore this year….

We are also terrible in transition. There are very few easy baskets for this team.

As bad as Randle has been, I agree that Thibs has not given this team a great chance to win.

Quickley should be averaging at least 30 mpg, and Randle should be on a leash if he can’t shoot, it’s unacceptable for him to be a top-2 shot taker in these games.

I do think we’ll turn this around, but it’s starting to look like our top-3 offense last year was an aberration.

All ISO trash from the bowels of hell.

I was in a bar in San Francisco last night watching the Warriors v OKC and also had the knick game on my phone and watching that as well….

The difference in the play was striking…both OKC and the Warriors were executing a high level flowing NBA offense with passing…cutting…motion, etc…the Knicks…not so much…it is tough to watch…

my post got caught up in moderation and lost all the replay links… but if you look at all the blocks last night… it’s a similar story as the rest of the season… we are forcing drives in iso… and good big defensive centers are just looking at the guy with the ball and stepping up early and making life difficult for everyone…

randle got blocked 3 times yesterday… quickley and brunson once…. all of which were telegraphed for 3-5 seconds… and yes these guys beat their guy sometimes but… life also is very difficult when you’re drawing 3 guys and trying to shoot over both giannis and lopez….

last season drop coverage was en vogue and the center was just camped underneath the basket and we just happened to have guys who were really good in floater range and were happy to hit them mostly uncontested… not this year… there’s no gimmes…

this brunson drive is emblematic of the changes we’re seeing… lillard’s not a good defender but he at least knows to stay on his hip… and lopez stepping up early makes brunson go up earlier than he wanted to and lillard gets the block.. but that was also a very difficult shot and probably gets blocked by lopez if dame didn’t….

plenty of other examples… and the randle drives last night that were blocked are also representative… it’s not the end of the world… but if you think we can just do the same thing and hope for different results.. and yea they might look a little better… but we’re going to fall WELL SHORT of last year….

The difference in the play was striking…both OKC and the Warriors were executing a high level flowing NBA offense with passing…cutting…motion, etc…the Knicks…not so much…it is tough to watch…

In fairness, that GS/OKC game was fantastic and there won’t be many games this year that are THAT fun to watch. The interesting thing, though, is how vastly more entertaining it is to watch a close game that is well played vs a close game that is poorly played, even at the highest level. These are the top .0000001% of basketball players on a planet with 8,000,000,000 people on it, and the variance is still so, so broad up there.

I love me some Mitch, but Jokic was 14-16 from the field with 14 rebounds and 9 assists, for 33 points. It feels like an honor to have him available to watch.

The problem with this team is almost too simple to lend itself to interesting discussion. We’re 2-4 with a 3-3 pythagorean record and the 3rd ranked defense. Everyone’s stats are at least starting to look like what we expected, with one major exception.

We have the 28th ranked offense primarily because Julius Randle has been a level of bad that is difficult to articulate. 25 USG% with a .370 TS% while being basically tied for the team lead in minutes (Brunson edges him out at 210 vs 208) is a prima facie case for deliberate sabotage. Limited minutes obviously, but non-Randle lineups have a +6.1 net rating as per CTG.

We miss RJ, partially because he is playing well in his own right, but also because he is someone who is not Julius Randle who takes shots.

Now that Obi is gone there’s no clear solution besides just hoping he gets it together soon. Yes, Thibs should have a shorter leash, but the team as currently constructed does rely on Randle to shoulder a lot of usage at reasonable efficiency. I mean, he’s been so bad in the early going we would obviously be straight up better without him, so maybe some kind of sabbatical nominally to work on his conditioning or whatever else would help in the short-term. But we do need the guy if we want to be even remotely interesting this year.

I really have no idea how to prognosticate. In most cases I would say “the reigning all-NBA player will not continue to suck,” but Randle has in fact sucked for multiple full seasons with us.

I guess my only real take is that it was a mistake to rely on a guy known to be so volatile to this extent. I’ll take Obi’s 6 points and 4 rebounds on 3/6 shooting any day over this shit.

Even Ju’s bad years are infinitely better than this, so it should get a lot better regardless. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

the issue is much bigger than randle… randle is having the toughest time with it tho… and he’s absolutely not the only one struggling…. our big investments this summer are another who can’t really hit anything right now either…. including getting stuffed and converting near the rim….

i’m not saying it’s time to panic or anything, but if you got a ticket betting the over for season wins – yeah, maybe just look at it as lesson learned…

DO NOT TRUST THE NEW YORK KNICKERBOCKERS – EVER…

they will only break your heart…

Out of the 9 guys in our rotation, 6 are underwater in TS+, most of those WAY underwater.

    TS+
    Grimes 97
    Brunson 93
    DDV 84
    Mitch 78
    Hart 72
    Randle 65

mitch is essentially in a 2 on 1 with all his teammates at half court and has to race over to help.

That’s sadly a regular occurrence on this team, Mitch having to cover multiple players at once because his teammates lag on defense.

It’s true that we have a lot of guys underwater efficiency wise, but I am 0% concerned about Brunson and only slightly more concerned about the other guys. They’re mostly low usage players whose numbers will take some time to stabilize but will likely round into form.

With Randle though I truly have no idea. I would be lying through my teeth if I said I had confidence he’d round into form. I mean, I am guessing he won’t stay in “worst TS% of all time” territory, but there are plenty of disastrous outcomes in play for the guy.

Is there any other high-usage player in the NBA who could put up a TS% of .490 or .590 with neither outcome being all that surprising?

then lopez sets a blatant moving screen on hart

the only missed call in the l2m report

Julius Randle FG% from 0-3 feet by year –

    2019-20: 63%
    2020-21: 66%
    2021-22: 63%
    2022-23: 68%

    2023-24: 7%

    (per Basketball Reference)

Once in a while, I’m given some information that I cannot wrap my mind around. This qualifies.

Haliburton had amazing stats tonight but he had 2 horrible possessions to end the game and lose at home to the Hornets.

I’m working with Cruz Beckham, David’s youngest son, all of next week. Writing and recording tunes for his debut album. Nice kid. I met the old man at our last songwriting session. Still haven’t gotten to kick it with Posh though

Remember when Mitch also used to throw down some dunks of lobs. Do we do that any more?

That’s super awesome JK, try to get him to do a collab with the Spice Girls so you can finally meet his mom!

Remember when Mitch also used to throw down some dunks of lobs. Do we do that any more?

With how we shoot it’s hard to tell if that is or isn’t what we’re trying
