What the hell is “sunkmthiugh”? Two of you have used it now, and an Internet search doesn’t yield anything of use……. Actually, it doesn’t turn up anything at all.

If you dont know what sunkmthiugh is, then you’re probably a sunkmthiugh

The Hoops Habit piece picked above is one of the few I agree with. Pretty much nails the best/worst moves. Signing RJ is not on there – which, despite being down on him and thinking it’s a mistake (at the time and since), I can’t argue it’s worse than the moves as ranked.

Schrodinger’s MarKATten, you don’t know how many Ks or Ts are in his name until you hit post

Guys, I’m still recovering from major abdominal surgery over here. Less laughter-inducing material, please.

[Kidding. Never stop with the M@rkkkkkkkuttten jokes.]

“If you dont know what sunkmthiugh is, then you’re probably a sunkmthiugh”

Well…….that hardly seems fair, and from context possibly also undeserved. 🙂

All I can say for sure about sunkmthiugh is that I’m 100%, no doubt using it correctly and definitely, absolutely know what it means

Hope all went well, Alan! We need you at 100% for the upcoming championship season!

“All I can say for sure about sunkmthiugh is that I’m 100%, no doubt using it correctly and definitely, absolutely know what it means”

Yes, I fully understand that, and fully believe it. But since I’ve never seen the word before yesterday on this forum or anywhere else, I’m simply asking about the meaning. And since you know, you can easily tell me. 🙂

Doogie, if you do the forensics you will easily discern that ‘sunkmthiugh’ is shorthand for ‘Eunice.’

‘Eunice’ is Greek for ‘good victory,’ or ‘good Nike.’ Therefore, it is a way to compliment someone for their excellent sneakers, with the suggestion that those shoes helped them win something.

Then how would I be a sunkmthiugh by virtue of the fact that I didn’t know what it meant? That doesn’t make any sense to me. It had a negative connotation, but what you are describing certainly doesn’t.

“Doogie, if you do the forensics you will easily discern that ‘sunkmthiugh’ is shorthand for ‘Eunice.’”

Definitely not easily discerned, nor factual.

Wow Alan, that is serious. I hope the surgery fixes things in you well and for good.

I have a modest piece of advice for you when you get out of your hospital bed. Try using handicap bathrooms as much as possible. Someone told me the handle bars in those bathrooms make it a lot easier on your abdomen. I suspect the nurses will tell you this too, but you never know.

Doogie, by forensics I mean a return to the original site where the event occurred, in this case Owen’s initial post, where he replaced ‘sunkmthiugh’ with the synonymic phrase ‘Eunice though’.

    Hence, sneaker victory.

Good advice, Knick fan. Since I got home over the weekend, it’s definitely been a challenge at times to maneuver without bars everywhere, particularly having a bed that also doesn’t adjust on top of having no handholds. But I’m getting by.

G00ge doesn’t offer much help, but quotes Milton,
    Lycidas
    By John Milton
Yet once more, O ye laurels, and once more
Ye myrtles brown, with ivy never sere,
I come to pluck your berries harsh and crude,
    And with forc’d fingers rude
Shatter your leaves before the mellowing year.
Bitter constraint and sad occasion dear
    Compels me to disturb your season due;
For Lycidas is dead, dead ere his prime,
Young Lycidas, and hath not left his peer.
Who would not sing for Lycidas? he knew
Himself to sing, and build the lofty rhyme.
He must not float upon his wat’ry bier
Unwept, and welter to the parching wind,
Without the meed of some melodious tear.

Take it easy Alan. We will need you at full strength by the time training camp opens.

No, but avid follower of blog. After Sonic’s left Seattle needed something to fill basketball habit.

Alan – Get well! My advance copy is ordered. I hope
to get Misha to sign it.

Guys, I was trying to type “some dunk though” and something very different came out – I was extremely tired.

Many have called me a master of unintentional comedy. It seems I may be.

John Milton? Wow! Nice! Okay, I’m in.

During these dog days of the offseason I perused some threads from last summer and found them to be very “entertaining” to say the least. It now appears that the range of opinions on most everything from the FO to coaching to players has a) inched towards the upbeat side of neutral and b) narrowed the range of opinions save for a couple of outliers. Still a smattering of lightning rod issues: will RJ make a leap, will the logjam at the 2 and lack of depth at the 4 create problems, will there will be a consolidation trade for a star, how will our relatively stable rotation measure up against the new-look rosters in the EC?

I’m guessing that barring any significant developments, the conversation will be pretty low-key until the season starts. Seems that the recent circling back to past grievances is symptomatic of that.

At least we have the World Cup stuff to look forward to…we can at least dream about what it would be like to have Mikal on the team!

you sound like you are on top of this stuff now al…

clarity and progress are a beautiful thing…

this month is diabetes awareness month for me…finally got a better handle on my nerves, so trying to get my sugars right now…

i’ve experienced different symptoms – the neuropathy stuff really scares me a bunch though…i’d prefer to not lose my toes, fingers and teeth…i’m okay seeing the hair go, trying to hold to the rest of it…

all that to say – i’m scared enough of the consequences to do right…

i hope this significant health challenge has you scared straight enough to do whatever it takes to get and stay right…

sometimes though, it’s just a matter of mitigating a janky genetics card dealt at birth…

you sound really good al, stay strong sir…

you simply can not be so literal Doogie Down Brown…

have you never read poetry, science-fiction, fantasy…stared at a painting…

got shit faced drunk and just mumbled to yourself quietly – about life…

your grip really isn’t that tight – is it 😛

i’m rooting now for leon to quietly and boringly guide us from: god-awful to not so embarrassing to mediocre to competitiveness to contention…

without saying a word to anyone about it except for the folks around him…

    “some dunk though”

all hail god owen, giver of new words and meaning…

okay, i think the drugs have kicked in…i’m gonna step away from the computer for a while now…

“i’m rooting now for leon to quietly and boringly guide us from: god-awful to not so embarrassing to mediocre to competitiveness to contention…

without saying a word to anyone about it except for the folks around him…”

Nice way of putting it, geo…

Since things are slow, I am rehashing a particular post I made 11 months ago in the context of discussing the merits and pitfalls of the draft-based rebuild vs. the so-called hybrid method. The bolded comments are my current reflections.

A lot of folks are going to praise Danny Ainge for what he has done thus far with the Jazz, but it isn’t every day that a guy can walk into a situation where there is a multiple DPOY in his prime and a young all-star just entering his prime, both under contract, on a team that is a lock to make the playoffs for the next few seasons and that has some draft capital to work with, that you have permission to swap out for draft capital and go full tank mode. I can’t think of another example of that happening to this degree.

The closest the Knicks have come to that in forever is KP, who was coming off of an ACL tear and demanded out. Had they gone full rebuild, the only draft capital they could have acquired would have come from renting out cap space.

In other words, it’s easier to accelerate a down-to-the-studs rebuild when you have multiple stars to trade. But still, the most valuable assets Dany has rignt now are his own picks.

In that sense, I agree that “tanking” is the most controllable way to acquire stars…far from certain in a short timeline, but eventually it works.

But as many teams have shown, it’s not the only way, and still requires competent decision-making in all phases of team-building. Drafting stars does not automatically equal building a contender.

Minny drafted KAT 7 seasons ago AND acquired Jimmy Butler as a second star. They have 2 first round exits to show for it.

Didn’t work out as planned, jury still out.

In the past 15 years, the Pelicans drafted CP3, AD, and Zion. They STILL have yet to get past the second round (2 appearance in 21 years)

    Still waiting on Zion, whatever.

The Suns missed the playoffs for 10 straight years despite having multiple picks in the high lottery. Their best players were two late lottery picks and a well past his prime superstar PG. Most of their high lottery picks were busts.

Sort of now or never for them, it will be interesting to see how they fare with a Booker-Durant-Beal core and how BKN does with the bountiful fruits of the Durant trade.

The Kings have made tanking an art form (haven’t hit the 40 game mark since 2005-06 and since then have finished with under 30 wins 8 times) and haven’t made the playoffs in 16 years and counting.

Sabonis is one of the most 1-way bigs in the NBA, not Kanter-level but definitely an issue. That Hali trade…who won it? Otherwise they have a promising core but don’t see a path to the finals anytime soon.

Since 2011 the Magic have not gotten out of the first round and have had several high lottery picks.

Will this be the year it starts to pay off? I wouldn’t bet on it…would still way rather be us than them.

The Pistons have not gotten out of the first round since 2008 and have missed the playoffs in 11 out of the past 13 seasons.

Still projected to be the among the worst teams in the NBA next year. Again, would way rather be us than them.

Sam Presti, one of the most successful GMs in the NBA in terms of draft acumen, acquired 3 HOFers via the draft in a short time and has still yet to hang a banner. His team had 4 straight first round exits before he fully embraced the tank, and even with all of his picks, his team looks at least 3 years away, which would amount to 5 years of abject tanking. That would be an impossibility in NYC.

Sam Presti is the consummate tank-style rebuilder, and I’d switch rosters with theirs in a heartbeat. Even so, that kind of patience wouldn’t fly under Dolan. But they are going to make a major leap sooner than later.

Let’s see how long it is before the Rockets make any noise in the WC.

    Don’t hold your breath.

Same with the Spurs, who are embracing the tank as we speak.

…and it paid off big time, but there is still a lot of roster building to do and who knows whether Wemby will hold up physically. I doubt Pop will be coach when they make their next trip to the conference finals.

In 2005, CLE drafted the modern GOAT with the #1 pick. It resulted in one finals ass-kicking. If LeBron didn’t decide on a homecoming as a free agent, they would still be on one finals loss. and possibly a 12 year playoff drought. Like Minny, they have gone all in on a core 4, sacrificing nearly all of their cap space and future draft capital. Lets see how it works out.

CLE was used as an example of what Leon could have done if he only had embraced the draft-based tank/rebuild strategy. Last year it looked like a no-brainer win for the Cavs. Now, after the way we demolished them in the playoffs, not nearly as much, especially with Spida not locked up long term and rumors of him opting out in 2025 and going “elsewhere .” Most still give them the nod over us, but my feeling is that any edge is not less to the method chosen and more to the execution of it. For example, replace Obi with Hali and we are clearly the better positioned team. Alas…

I’m simply asking about the meaning. And since you know, you can easily tell me. 🙂

It’s really more of a vibe than set definition

That is a long post. Ted Nelson would be proud.

I still like Cleveland. They ran into a Josh Hart buzzsaw. What can you do.

I like Utah too. Seems a clever rebuild to me.

And I think OKC might be quite interesting as well. Why can’t they win 53?

While I agree tanking doesn’t always work there are a lot of examples where it does.

I’m with you, Owen. Cleveland, Utah, and OKC are all really interesting, and it should make for a fascinating, dare I say sunkmthiugh, season.

    1. Feel better Alan

    2. I’m not sure how I feel about a trade for OG Anunoby that costs us Quickley. I’m not sure Quickley isn’t the best all around player on the team. He’s not a guy you can give the ball to and say “get a basket” like Brunson. He can’t carry an offense like Brunson or Randle on some nights. But’s unlike them, Quickley is a plus defender. I think having him on the court WITH Brunson and Randle more often is what we should be trying.

    3. There no reason to look around the league at various paths to rebuilding to try to determine what works. It has already been studied carefully going all the way back to David Berri and multiple times after that. There are detailed public studies out there already. You just have to adjust your thinking a little for that fact that drafting has become riskier in the “18-19 year old” period than it was earlier and we’ve had some rule changes along the way that changed the probabilities and values when it comes to trades and free agents (like this year).

Owen, I only uploaded that lengthy post because things are slow (beyond discussing the meaning of a jibberish word).

CLE, UTA, OKC are indeed very interesting, and would be fun to root for. I have considerably more confidence in Ainge and Presti than I do in Leon…not as much in Altman, but he’d be a fine replacement for Leon.

The question is: how are the Knicks doing in building a roster comparison to those teams? More specifically, how is the method the Knicks are using to build a roster working compared to those (and other) examples?

Is the answer different now than it was last year at this time?

Cleveland, Utah, and OKC are all really interesting, and it should make for a fascinating, dare I say sunkmthiugh, season.

I think there are quite a few good young teams out there besides these 3 that could take a significant step up this year even if they aren’t ready for the big time or playoffs quite yet. They have play-in possibilities.

That’s what has me concerned about the Knicks this year.

I love our team and think we have upside, but I project greater upside for quite a few other teams. IMO some of the wins from last are going to be tougher to come by this year. On a relative basis we may slip. I saw the under and over a week or so ago and it seems the early line for us is in the 44-45 win range. So that’s what Vegas thinks also.

The team that really has my interest right now is Memphis. They were a total mess last year between Morant and injuries. But that core is very good. Jaren Jackson has a chance to become a monster. I love the addition of Marcus Smart. They just have to get healthy again and maybe add 1 more piece or get some development from someone else.

Derrick Rose is going to have to hold down the fort at backup until Morant gets back. That should be interesting. Morant will be out for awhile and then take some time to get back 100% and they also lost Tyrus Jones.

There are on my short list for a potential title bet this year depending on the odds and what happens before the season starts.

We’ve reached the point of the off-season where Z-Man’s past-self engages his future-self in a multi-dimensional monologue about Cleveland and Utah.

Hubie Brown is returning to ESPN this year to call games at age 90?

At 90 shouldn’t he be running for Congress, the Senate or presidency so he can be with his peers?

Yeah, I mean, only one team can win a championship yearly. Only two can go to the finals. Only four can go to the conference finals, etc.

Every year, 26 teams and their fans are going to be pretty disappointed. And every season, luck plays a bigger part than most would like to admit.

Sorry about my silence during the offseason. I still come here to read what you guys write, but i just don’t feel the urge to talk about the Knicks given the current (good) state of the team. I guess this is a compliment for Leon, because if we were bad i’d be here everyday complaining about the team and trying to spot trades or whatever to improve us. LOL

Guys, I’m still recovering from major abdominal surgery over here.

Today i’m here to wish that this is your final stop on the path to being healthy again, Alan. I hope you have a speedy recovery, my friend from the other side of the atlantic.

Today is the first Monday of the month, which means we’re reminding folks that you can contribute to keep KnickerBlogger up & running! We are grateful for your support!

Oh, one last thing before i go into silent mode again, please be sure to read this carefully, i see only 15 people on KB’s Patreon account and we’re a lot more than that, so if you can help keep this place alive, please do it. Mike K deserves it, and speaking for myself, i need this, don’t let this place go down.

Thanks, Cyber, now I have to figure out what the fuck a Patreon account means.

    Oh Lady Raven…

“Oh, one last thing before i go into silent mode again, please be sure to read this carefully, i see only 15 people on KB’s Patreon account and we’re a lot more than that, so if you can help keep this place alive, please do it. Thanks cyber, I agree that this is a special forum and we should all be contributing to help keep it running.

I know I eagerly await late night with donnie…

    so far enjoying usa/puerto rico…

mikal looks taller somehow from what I remember…

jalen looking clean and well groomed…like he just had some major life event…

“jalen looking clean and well groomed…like he just had some major life event…”

Well, yeah…….he just married Isaiah Hartenstein.

Raven, I’ve lived in west seattle the last forty years. Basketball was always my favorite sport. Though I’ve always been much better at racket sports.

I know I eagerly await late night with donnie…

I’m glad you eagerly await it; however, I un-eagerly await mornings with donnie, which is when I log on to KB to be greeted by all the inane garbage I posted right before bed. Some days I’m like “I said what?!”. Like, Clarence Clemons ruins Springsteen songs and stuff like that. Smh.

I feel like the Brador v Jowles tennis might be interesting.

    “Much better at racket sports.”

Obviously Jowles’ hindquarters will dominate in the butt department but I feel like Brador might win this one just based on the casual confidence.
