I’m a bit confused, did Washington really trade his two best players without getting a single first round pick?
Strange way to start a rebuild…
With the current roster the “team that never tank” is targeting a 15-wins season.
Re: Celtics:
the “abstract idea” of the Celtics is a title contender, we’ll see what reality will bring, Smart was the heart of that team.
P.S.
Oh, I just read Z-Man’s comment from the previuos thread, I’m not the only one surprised by the low return the Wiz got… 🙂
Here’s the devil’s advocate argument for the KP trade benefiting Washington: In the initial deal, they got the 30th pick plus Marcus Morris, the latter of whom would have little value to them except as another expiring contract. In this version, they get the 35th pick, plus Tyus Jones, who will presumably start at PG for them once CP3 is traded or bought out. Moving back 5 spots in the draft takes away that fifth year of control on whomever they take, but there’s rarely that much difference in the quality of player available at 30 versus 35, and they get Jones, who has earned the chance to start somewhere in the league. And they’ll probably get something of real value for Paul.
It’s not a spectacular trade for them, but I don’t think it’s appreciably worse than the original version with the Clippers involved.
The way that trade ended up is certainly a plot twist. I like KP on the C’s as the 3rd option, but Brogdon starting will take lots of touches away. Mazzula’s gonna have a tough starting 5 to balance. I am curious about who starts at the 4 between Williams and Horford, and I’m also intrigued by Smart’s effect on Memphis. I think that our Knicks now HAVE to add more offense somewhere. It might just end up being in the form of Lavine. And honestly, if we use RJ to get him- it will make us shorter on the wings, but the defense between RJ & LaVine are about the same. I’m saying that with the belief that Thibs would get the same defensive effort out of LaVine that he did in Minny. RJ’s defensive ceiling is higher, but considering LaVine won’t have to carry such a heavy load on offense, he should be able to ramp his defensive effort up. And if we retain Hart and Quickley, Thibs should be able to make up for what LaVine isn’t on defense by starting Hart and moving Grimes to the bench. Or, if Obi gets traded for a bigger wing who plays D either in a one for one trade or a pick that becomes a bigger wing, then he can start Grimes and LaVine and keep Hart with that 2nd unit. I trust him to put together a decent defense in that scenario.
And no, I don’t want someone like Covington on this team- he’s barely 6’7(if that). I want someone that’s 6’8″ or better and can play both forward spots. Remember we still have Sims who can play both big spots, so we won’t be lacking for size up front a whole lot
Feels like a really impressive job by KP’s agent…
KP was almost certainly going to opt in and hope for an extension with a trade partner given the market out there.
Now he gets traded to a championship level team who gave up their heart and soul to get him. He can probably write whatever number he wants on his own extension offer, sign it, and give it to Brad Stevens for bookkeeping.
Say what you will about Michael Winger — writ large he is doing what he should be doing, but I don’t see any poker player at all in him — just getting whatever is offered and sending people out the door without trying to “win” any of the deals. But sure feels like a fire sale as opposed to getting value.
I agree Alan, this version is just as bad as the Clippers’ one 🙂
Anyway, Tyus Jones is a good player, one of the League’s top backup-PG, but they’ll need to extend or re-route him because he’ll be a UFA at season end.
Is Winger’s really playing N-dimensional chess… or is he very bad?
the big board… i actually ended up liking this draft a bit better than last year… a great top two followed by a few intriguing guys and some guys who can make it… or otherwise a normalish draft but kind of falls off to late first/second rd types midway through the first…
1. Victor Wembanyama – not much to say but love where he’s going and hopefully the foot holds up..
2. Scoot Henderson – not much to say here either.. i liken him to fultz in a good way….
3. Cam Whitmore – a lot to not like but the age.. athleticism and enough ball skills hopefully can carry…
4. Anthony Black – solid.. could just be a role player but enough passing ability to possibly be more..
5. Maxwell Lewis – the development is a bit like Ja Morant from fresh to soph year… this rating might seem crazy but you just have to look at him and just see a guy with impossibly long arms with a crazy amount of ball skills with the performance to match… and in that way he’s a lot like Jalen Williams and it’s the same type of sleeper for the second year in a row…
6. Jarace Walker – a bit like a poor man’s Millsap if you like the optimistic case for him and fit’s well in the modern 4 archetype if he can get his shot to be more consistent…
7. Amen Thompson
8. Ausur Thomspon – The age and level of comp is no good… but they do show some tantalizing ability and the guys behind them aren’t exactly setting the world on fire and so it’s worth a gamble to see if there is legitimately something to unlock…
9. Taylor Hendricks – him and Walker are pretty similar with Walker being bulkier and some slightly better ball skills… Hendricks is the more reliable shooter for now..
10. Brandon Miller – the age and driving ability hold him back a bit… he is an old soph/young junior and it makes a lot of what he’s done way less impressive… but he’s also not chopped liver either… it just i think he’s a high risk if you expect high usage out of him… the gun thing does him no favors either..
11. Brice Sensabaugh – a lot of these bulky bully ball types in this draft which makes a bit more high risk but the production is hard to ignore..
12. Cason Wallace – kentucky guards have just been so reliably good and he’s probably another in a long line that should make an impact on the league…
13. Kobe Bufkin – the size and lack of scoring ability holds him back but he’s solid and can probably play a low usage high efficient game pretty well..
14. Gradey Dick – he was underrated now i think he’s overrated but he’s largely fine.. he can launch 3s with the best of them and contribute elsewhere where he might not just be a specialist…
14. Keyonte George – I got a soft spot for George and there isn’t much after this so you’re sort of betting on the kind of improvement cole anthony and quickley had in the pro’s where they mitigate some of the lack of finishing ability with something else… if he does there’s eric gordon comps here..
15. Dariq Whitehead – he came in with a lot of hype but likely came back too soon… pretty similar to AJ Griffin and that’s sort of what you’re betting on… he’s still 18 which actually makes it sort of intriguing…
16. Nick Smith – also a lot of hype and fell flat.. there’s some cole anthony energy here but not in a good way…
17. Leonard Miller
18. Brandin Podziemski
19. Bilal Coulibaly
20. James Nnaji
21. Kris Murray
22. Jordan Walsh
23. Amari Bailey
24. Jaime Jaquez
25. Marcus Sasser
Some interesting bits about the new CBA, and seems like the players also managed to pass changes that clearly benefit them.
https://www.hoopsrumors.com/2023/06/and-ones-cba-changes-free-agents-las-vegas-holland.html
Tyus Jones would be really nice addition for us, too.
Leon needs to stop thinking about hitting a grand slam with that Wizards pick and just hit a single.
Either Jones or Avdija would be a good rotation piece.
Looks like i’ve been out, never heard about this #3 for KAT before. 😮 Would he be the best sidekick Dame ever had?
Having multiple picks in drafts is tough when it comes to extensions, no? Does Quickly get a deal soon? I wish there was a number where we could keep Obi, but I’d also be excited to see him with a bit of a chip on his shoulder. Let him make it tough for management or at least improve his trade value. Stay boring Leon. Trade our pick in 24 for a top ten protected 25 pick. That’ll keep you busy lol
Wow Middleton declined his $40mm option. That opens up some things for Milwaukee.
What’s Marcus Smart gonna do with all that green hair dye?
Does it? It looks like it gives Milwaukee about $10M in cap space if they waive his cap hold.
Checking in after the KP trade. Instantly rewarded for it 😉
I assume Middleton and Milwaukee will sign him to a new contract for a much smaller annual number. They’ll still be over the cap, but it gives them a bit more flexibility in terms of the tax, penalties, etc.
Kristaps played all his minutes at the 5 last year, so I would guess they start him with Horford? Celtics having no PG is going to be interesting.
Isn’t Brogdon the PG?
The main thing for the Wizards was to get out from under the bad contracts and start over. I like this KP deal better for the Wizards.
I love healthy KP, but his value is always going to have a built in discount because of health risks. They weren’t going to get a lot for him, he served no purpose in DC long term, but they did get assets. Dallas took back bad contracts.
IMO, they should forget about Kuzma too. He’s a fine player, but you don’t want him as one of your big salaries.
The shocking thing to me is how badly Boston wanted Porzingis. They have long wanted him, but to trade Smart in order to facilitate it was a huge decision. They have more work to do now, but they have plenty of picks. Tatum, Brown, and healthy KP is a dynamite 1, 2, 3 punch even if the defense suffers a little without Smart. If they can add a a PG that defends a bit to replace Smart, they are the favorites to win it all even over Denver.
I guess it’s good to have depth when everyone in the frontcourt is old or injury prone or both
Celtics were already a bit of a soft team; trading their most tenacious guy for fragile KP seems like a questionable swing to me. Yeah, KP is good … when he plays …
Do the “when he plays” gambles ever work out? I’m seriously trying to think of an example. Maybe Kawhi when he went to TOR but afterwards it’s been worst-case-scenario with LAC.
White’s going to start for them, not Brogdon.
I thought WAS got the MEM 1st here, but no, it was BOS – so that’s definitely a nice grab on their part.
I think Brogdon is the nominal PG but he is apparently injured and is more of a combo guard anyhow.
the wiz didn’t have much leverage in the KP deal as he simply could’ve opted out…. they’re doing the right thing bottoming out but probably should’ve done it awhile ago…. but now is better than later…
and man.. the celts get picks too… pretty good deal for them…
From a Knicks fan perspective, it’s kind of funny to see KP essentially traded for Smart (even if Smart went elsewhere), given that his inability to post up against a much shorter guy in Smart was in many ways the symbol of his early career weaknesses.
You know, normally I go into draft night hoping the Knicks do something big. This year, it’s the opposite – I don’t want them messing with the growth trajectory or overreaching, so I’d rather see a marginal move or nothing at all.
Watching the draft is a total guilty pleasure for me. It’s such an absurd spectacle on TV; it’s as pointless as watching election night, but with slightly lower stakes.
But I definitely record and watch that shit on delay – the ad barrage is overwhelming.
Those were embarrassing days for him. I don’t know how it happened, but posting up went from a weakness to a strength last year. I think last summer was the first time in awhile he wasn’t rehabbing an injury and actually had a chance to work on his game because he was firing on all cylinders on offense. His points per game will go down playing next to Tatum and Brown, but I have to think Boston is going to use him even more efficiently and may develop him further.
The weak return on these trades only emphasizes what a terrible position Washington has been in. Terrible management for so long… Feels familiar….
I think Washington did ok. On the surface it seems unfathomable that a borderline playoff team could tear it down by trading its 2 best players and not even get a 1RP. But Beal and his contract (with the no trade clause that survives the trade) was not a positive asset and as djphan said if they did not move KP yesterday, he walks. At least they got Tyus Jones, and they sort of got a first round pick since the pick we have is unlikely to convert into a first. Finally, they pick 8th today and can take the BPA since they no longer have to worry about a fit with any good players!
the issue with KP “walking” is –> was that really going to happen in this cap environment and also not much cap space out there?
In a poker analogy, this is basically someone making a motion at pushing chips into the middle — and Winger throwing his cards in before the guy has even moved the chips all he way in.
RJ, Fournier, and all 4 protected picks. Get ‘er done.
the issue with KP “walking” is –> was that really going to happen in this cap environment and also not much cap space out there?
I see what you mean Frank, but since the Celtics revived a failed trade so quickly by giving up a lot more must have been influenced by the midnight deadline of KP opting in. And we do know that KP (or his brother) is pretty good at playing poker.
Imagine how Ainge would have worked the situation and you have a better sense of how Winger did. Could have been worse, but wasn’t great.
Though mostly it was the deals/trades that led to this position that were so awful. That Beal contract…and he’s a good player! But that contract…
i imagine a lot of teams have had contact with the Clippers about a Paul George trade
Gobert wasn’t exactly on a great contract, either. But he didn’t have a no-trade clause, and one-man defenses are harder to come by these days than aging high-volume wing scorers who don’t play much defense. So Ainge had an easier time of moving Rudy.

-Whitmore is pretty much the only true freshman in the NCAA who checks most of the important boxes, and (eye test alert) is probably the best non-Wemby overall defender in the whole class.
-I’m baffled that Podz isn’t mocked higher. He can score in a variety of ways and was younger than many freshmen this year. There are some defensive questions, but his steal rate was great and even his block numbers standout among guards. If the Knicks somehow wind up with him tonight, A+ draft.
-If you’re going to invest in someone who needs to learn to shoot the ball, I don’t see why you wouldn’t prefer Black to Scoot. Black has a very well-rounded game and has shown he can play both on and off the ball. Scoot is basically totally heliocentric, so if he’s not good enough to justify that all of the sudden he’s in serious trouble.
-The twins might make me look really, really dumb. Whatever, if you choose to play against high schoolers and don’t absolutely dominate I’m going to break ties in favor of basically everyone else.
-Jacquez, Brown, Sheppard, and Bailey could all fall to the 2nd round or even be UDFAs, and the Knicks should pounce if possible. I believe we’ve worked out Sheppard.
-I’d probably have Sensabaugh higher if not for injury concerns dating back to high school. He’ll have to figure out how to not be so ball dominant in the NBA, but he’s got all the tools to be an effective 3rd/4th option.
I haven’t paid any attention to the draft outside of a mild interest in Wemby but I would love to somehow get Kobe Bufkin based on name
Jacquez is going in the teens, early 20s at the absolute latest, Noble. Every draft expert has talked about how much he’s moved up during the workout/interview process. If the Heat aren’t trading their pick to Portland, hard to see him getting past them.
Bunch of draft-day intel from this Begley video: https://twitter.com/IanBegley/status/1671914800975151105?s=20
In addition to the PG13 stuff, he says there are voices in the FO very in favor of going after DiVincenzo in free agency, that if other offseason moves don’t open more playing time for Obi, then the team and Obi’s agents will work to find him a better home, and that there’s been a fair amount of interest around the league in acquiring Deuce.
I wouldn’t mind getting Chris Paul as our backup PG if he was down. He led the league in pick and roll frequency, so if we keep Obi, they would make an amazing duo on the 2nd unit with Hartenstein clearing out a bit.
Will never happen, though, for a variety of reasons.
RJ –> Paul George is the upgrade this team needs.
I get the injury risk, impending extension, and age.
But in my mind’s eye, he is the ideal player to play next to Brunson and Randle. Can play on/off ball, can play small-ball 4 (26% of minutes at the 4 this year, 55% of minutes at the 4 last year – Bye Obi), and obviously is the big wing defender Hart/Grimes can’t really be size-wise.
RJ+Obi+salary+ up to 3 1sts…. get it done Leon!
first.. i’m shocked over the scoot rating… second… scoot is legitimately an all everything scorer… his 3pt shot isn’t good yet but he was dealing with an nba 3pt line while black struggled on the college line.. and scoot did shoot better from the ft line and historically has shot better there… he could go all literally like markelle fultz but i’m not too worried on his shot translating otherwise…
double shocked on podziemski… i’m not so sure about the scoring ability…. he’s generally a pull up guy and a very weird looking floater… but he’s got some game to him…. he’s a bit like kennard and i think he’s going to have to make his living out on the 3pt line like him…
30 in the NBA is precisely the decline phase in the NBA. Smart was noticeably much worse this past season on defense than the previous year. He went from Defensive Player of the Year to not even making first or second team All-Defensive. He still occasionally turned it on, but it is one of those deals where it is rarer and rarer to see him dominate a game defensively. The trade will presumably motivate him to try harder in Memphis, though, so hopefully he turns it around.
we’re already into the Robert Randolph ‘leaking’ information from his sources part of the post season
Would be funny if that Randolph “scoop” actually happened.
I think he definitely has people telling him things. Just whether they’re telling him accurate thing is a whole other story.
For the record, for those of you who don’t feel like perusing Randolph’s Twitter account, his source told him that the deal would be RJ, Mitch, Fournier and Obi for Paul George and Zubac (presumably the Knicks are also throwing in some sort of draft assets into the alleged deal, as well).
Did Leon send Ju to interviewwith PG 13 as a disguised recruitment visit?
There goes another 2nd round pick. Leon’s strategy of draft pick pick incineration has to stop.
You know who I think is going to be a good NBA player? Hawkins from UCONN. That fucker can shoot. And he can hit guarded shots like nobody’s business. I think he will be a longtime NBA shooter.
Scoot does have slightly better free throw shooting numbers than Black, but the sample size is small because Scoot didn’t get to the line all that much (which is its own issue).Scoot was also basically a non-shooter from 3, while Black at least got up some attempts and hit 30.5% on a pull up heavy diet.
Black also finished at a 63% clip around the rim, with a lot of those coming off dribble moves and/or being tightly contested. He’s an absolute man child. I don’t think those numbers are available for the Ignite, but anecdotally Scoot has some weird misses that give me some pause about his ability to generate consistent rim pressure and his 2PT% indicates there might be a real issue there (though I think a lot of that is just missed midrange garbage he presumably won’t take in the NBA).
There’s absolutely enough talent to make me look stupid here, and if I was ranking on upside alone Scoot would be #2. The problem is I think he’s going to be a ball dominant player, which means the standard for him has to be pretty damn high. There’s kind of a fine line between Ja Morant and Dennis Smith Jr., and there are too many red flags for me to project him as a good team’s primary ball handler.
“For the record, for those of you who don’t feel like perusing Randolph’s Twitter account, his source told him that the deal would be RJ, Mitch, Fournier and Obi for Paul George and Zubac (presumably the Knicks are also throwing in some sort of draft assets into the alleged deal, as well).”
Never would have believed PG to the Knicks was possible until I saw Randle on PG’s podcast. Substitute something else for Mitch and I’d do it. I think Mitch is the Linchpin of our defense, take him out and the whole thing falls apart.
the one most enduring fact about knickertwitter is that no matter how creatively you try to mute robert randolph’s name his bullshit will seep into your feed like puss
You lost me at Mitch.
I’m down to take a risk on PG but he has to be priced like a risk.
If Robert Randolph is saying Paul George is coming to the Knicks we can safely stop talking about the possibility.
Still love the Friday night anthem!
i think that’s a good perspective on Scoot… i also noticed the low ftr and yes it’s low but what was odd in that kuminga.. green and daniels all outperformed their ftr from their gleague stints into their rookie year… which leads to a couple possibilities:
1)the nba whistle is generous – very possible or
2)these are just glorified pickup games and fouls are hardly called- somewhat possible.. i think some games they can get very scrappy but it’s hard to decipher without more data…
3)or its variance and means nothing…
i think 1 and 2 are enough of a possibility that it’s likely that Scoot should have a higher ftr… and he’s drive heavy enough to be somewhere in the .300 range but that’s more of an educated guess… he’s certainly not perfect which leaves room for a downside case.. and as we’ve seen with fultz… that can easily happen…
Only draftee I like is Malachi as he goes seamlessly with our other biblical scholars.
Although Azuolas Tubeless sounds like a marine invertebrate.
okay cp3 for poole is a shock
I saw Robert Randolph open for Eric Clapton at Jones Beach a number of years back. He was terrific. Clapton was other worldly good. I was always a fan, but he was much better than I expected. A friend had seen another show recently and said he was massively better at Jones Beach. I guess it was just one of those nights he and the entire band were energized and his own lead work was peaking. He even played a few acoustic blues numbers that were surprisingly good given I generally prefer the real roots players. Randolph and Clapton jammed together at the end. That was also terrific. His Knicks rumors…..nah.
I’m not sure that locker room ever got over the Draymond Green/Poole incident.
I’ve always said those GSWs could be decent if they had a point guard
not a big jordan poole fan but he could lead the league in scoring next year
so like 2 of the best 3 PGs of all time are on the same roster?????????????
This is a brilliant move by the Warriors to get out from underneath Poole’s onerous contract (that they gave him, but still).
bypassing the suns team that had kidd nash and kj in the same rotation
could argue the wizards traded their best player three times in five days
man i’m happy for cp3… great situation for him and for however many games i get to see it … cp3 + curry is a basketball dream come true…
Chris Paul for Paul George incoming? No rumors about that, so it’s probably going to happen.
(Poole really does suck at that contract. Would suck at $15M, to be clear. Not terrible terrible, but a net negative on both sides of the ball per every metric we have. No way the Warriors want to be paying him luxury-tax hellscape money to be a below-average player.)
I half expect the Wizards to re-up with Kuzma and delusionally try to make the playoffs with Poole & Kuz
There’s a Poole/JaKuzzi joke to be had somewhere
The Wizards also got some picks in the CP3/Poole deal.
And that 2030 Warriors pick has got to be valuable, even though it is protected (probably just 1-4, but I don’t know for sure).
Well, the Warriors are definitely out on the “two timelines” plan huh?
Good trade for both teams. Warriors have an obligation to maximize present talent as long as Steph is playing like Steph and the Wizards get a tank commander they might be able to flip at some point. Also sounds like they’re getting Ryan Rollins, who I liked as a prospect and dominated 9 G-League games for what that’s worth.
Leon Rose’s alarm clock just went off but he hit the snooze button and went back to bed.
I say this not as a defense of Rose, exactly, but boy, he’s in a very tough spot this offseason. I don’t envy the decisions he is going to have to make.
lol the 2030 pick is top 20 protected. at least it’s better than the 2028 swap they got from the suns which only swaps for the worst of phx, philly, or brooklyn.
So it sounds like the Wizards ended up getting six 2nd round picks in the Beal trade plus four 1st swaps.
I’m pretty sure that’s every movable pick Phoenix had.
You’ve got to admire the balls on the new Phoenix owner, it’s probably very stupid, but he’s got some big balls
The new Phoenix owner is being influenced by the great Isaiah Thomas.
That is amazingly silly.
Unbelievable deal for the dubs. They get Poole out of town. The draft compensation is not so onerous. Does CP3 have anything left? Washington lol. How do you give a 43% shooter that much? The only thing they had was flexibility
Really curious what ancient Chris Paul looks like playing in that offense. Shame that it’s happening now and not ten years ago, but that was never going to happen back then.
KP was the only possible trade I would have made and based on what got moved around, it would’ve been too rich for my taste. At this point the best move for the Knicks is no move.
Assuming you mean no big move I agree, but we should try to replace Rose & Fournier with guys who can do something and maybe see what we can get for Obi.
Well, if the Warriors are trying to be the oldest team to win a NBA Championship, i’d suggest adding free-agent Brook Lopez (35) to be the center of a Steph (35), CP3 (38), Klay (33) and Dray (33) team.
With Poole out and CP3 in, will the Warriors re-sign Draymond and go for a last ride, trying to become the oldest champion team ever?
P.S. Cyber beat me to it 😀
According to Spotrac, the Warriors still have the cap holds for Andrew Bogut, Matt Barnes, Mark West and Jonas Jerebko.
If true it’s ridiculously funny!
I don’t think our best move is no move, i think our best move is to keep being patient and wait for the right opportunity to strike. We don’t know what opportunities will arise between now and the beginning of the season, so we have to keep waiting. If a good opportunity comes, we should try to seize it, if it doesn’t, then we’ll go to war with the current team with some minor adjustments.
Great minds think alike. 😉
Cyber, you jest, but my brain gets all oozy like melted chocolate when I think of Brook Lopez on the Warriors. I think it might be a brilliant idea.

“Paul George may seek an extension when he becomes eligible this offseason.
He is eligible for a contract extension for a maximum of four years and around $220 million.
If one isn’t reached, he can decline his ($48.8 million) player option for the 2024-25 season and become a free agent next summer.”
True, a single idiot (owner) can derail any rational business decision, but sometimes NBA rumors make me feel like I’m reading science fiction…
uh Paul George, ever heard of him? you must have not been around in 2013 when he was taking it to peak LeBron smdh
sure he lost but he was a GAMER
Yeah, the championship window is probably one season (LOL) but it looks like a great team.
I’m out having dinner and my waiter’s name is Danilo. It’s a sign from God!
okay, so now we know a little more of the background and folks’ feelings about “the punch” inside the warriors organization…
i so hope the wiz resign kuz now…it’ll be funny…
not sure what pg’s age is – but, he’s an old whatever that number might be…
jake fisher had written that the magic might trade suggs or anthony if they draft a guard. as rough and injury riddled as suggs’ first two years have been, i still think there’s quite a bit to like about him. wonder what his trade price would be.
