Am starting to worry about that pick not conveying. Mavs need to win at least a few more games…
Right now the Mavs are tied for 10th. What’s the ideal outcome – that they make the play in tournament and win?
Also, Luke Kennard with the honorary Taurean Prince Award, 10-11 from three last night. Holy crap…
Cuban knows the value of that pick at #10, and also knows that he has very limited avenues for improving the team, it wouldn’t surprise me if there’s a stealth tank going on…
I think so. It guarantees that the pick conveys, and the difference between 11 and 14 isn’t that great — especially if you believe Leon has no intention of using this pick as anything but a trade asset.
The sort of good news is that if it doesn’t convey it is still a top-10 protected first rounder for a couple of additional years, and as such will still have value.
This is true, Z-man, but it’s hard to imagine it will be this high again over the next couple of years. This year has been a perfect storm for the Mavs, and Luka alone generally gives them a higher floor than this.
It doesn’t sound as if this draft is as deep as last year’s, so maybe pick 14 or 15 in this draft will be viewed as less valuable than a lower pick a year or two from now. But you don’t want to risk the Mavs either going on a deep playoff run or tearing it down to the studs if Luka decides he’s fed up with Cuban’s inability to build a contender around him.
My money is on the pick conveying. Not at all worried. What can a pick #10 do for them? It’s much more important to try to be in the playoffs to not upset Luka.
I have good news for today – one of the teams fighting for the 5th seed with us is going to lose. But i also have bad news – the other will win. 😀
I think Miami is a bigger threat than Brooklyn. Let’s go Net’s!
Was catching up on the IQ stuff.
I suspect we’ll be able to get him on a very team-friendly extension this summer, something like 4 years, $52mm, with a player option in the last year.
He probably is worth $18-20mm on the open market like y’all were suggesting, but he just doesn’t have the bargaining power to get that from us this summer.
The Mavs currently have a 40% chance of making the playoffs, and if they miss the playoffs they only have a 7% chance of moving up. The odds of that conveying this year are extremely high.
The Washington pick, on the other hand… unless they have an outstanding off-season this year, I think we can kiss that goodbye forever.
The Mavs could easily fall back to the 9th or 10th place in the lottery and keep the pick. They are tied with CHI and UTA in the loss column and have an owner who has admitted to tanking in the past. They would only need to be caught by one of those teams (and not be out-tanked by one of the teams tied with or just above them) to keep the pick. I think it’s more likely the pick conveys than not, but probably by just a hair.
Tanking just ties up the Mavs future assets. Unless they think there’s a win now player in the draft or they’ve given up on competing with Luka, I can’t imagine they see tanking as adding value.
If they keep the pick this year, can’t they trade it?
The odds of there being a win now player at #9 or #10 are probably not bad, seems like the draft is pretty decent in the lottery. It’s also possible that it would have more value in a trade than a future pick.
Again, I don’t expect the Mavs to tank but it wouldn’t shock me. Even if they don’t, they might wind up in the bottom 10 since other teams around them are playing hard.
The Mavs are a toxic stew of douchebag personalities. Jason Kidd AND Kyrie Irving AND Mark Cuban! If we didn’t have a 1RP hanging in the balance I would take great glee in watching them fail.
They can but it doesn’t net them any additional 1sts and ties up a 2nd.
I guess the chance to win or move up in the lotto this year is probably worth it though.
I still don’t really buy that Kyrie or Luka want to tank.
I don’t think they are tanking. I think they are legitimately bad.
Yeah, probably just bad. They have zero defense and Kyrie still hasn’t played much with the team.
But looking at the boxscore, the Mavs only hit 25% of their 3s so it’s at least a bit fluky.
I specifically came here to word for word say literally exactly to the letter what JK47 did, verbatim
and there is absolutely no chance that the Mavs would rather have a likely #9 pick and a 2% chance at Wemby than make the playoffs, c’mon y’all
they made the WCF last year with Luka and an island of misfit toys
They play @CHA and @IND b2b in their next two, so we’ll know more by Tuesday. If they lose both, that pick starts to look like theirs…
Ah, shit. You’re right, Z-Man. I was only looking at the west standings. I didn’t realize they are currently 11th worst in the league and could keep the pick without moving into the top 4.
God damn, how could a team with Luka be struggling this much just to make the playoffs? What a shit organization.
There’s about a 20% chance someone jumps them and we still get the pick if they finish with the 10th lotto slot. It’s 3.6% if they finish 9th.
So there’s at least some hope if they do end up 10th.
Fun fact: fellow notable matador James Harden has never missed the playoffs in any of his 15 seasons, including this one.
Me too. Go Nets!
Mavs will have 2 tradable 1sts this offseason or a top-10 pick and a future 1st to acquire a player. They also probably look for a Wood S&T.
They don’t need a star with Kyrie and Luka aboard, both can drive an offense by themselves while the other sits, so I think they should be able to field a competitive team next year. A couple solid role players should be enough if the two can stay healthy.
The offseason to integrate Kyrie and Luka into a more coherent offense is going to be a major upgrade on its own. It’s the early Heatles problem.
Kyrie will be a free agent in the summer. With how things are going, do you think he’s a lock to re-sign? 😮
I don’t understand why on Twitter and here people think we should root for Brooklyn tonight. Nets have a back to back in Miami and Orlando, best case scenario is them losing both. Its about securing 6th seed first and getting rid of the Nets as an option is right now the quickest path.
Of course if the Knicks just take care of business at home next week it doesn’t matter what the Nets and Heat do.
Honestly BBA if we can’t hold on to these seeds, we are not ready to beat anyone in the playoffs anyway. In my opinion, we used up our well-earned cusion and the playoffs actually start now. We probably need to go 5-3 to assure the 5 seed, oncluding beating Miami at home.
I don’t think the six seed would be so terrible either, as the Celtics have been teetering a bit and we’ve played them well.
Most important is just getting Brunson healthy, avoiding the play in, and playing better. 4-6 in past ten? If this is the level we bring to the postseason, we’re cooked against any of the top 4.
I’m not as obsessed with the 5th seed, once the 4th seed was out of reach I don’t think it matters as much 5th or 6th. Sure I think Cleveland is a better matchup than Philly or Boston but if there is a slight possibility of a long playoff run 6th is better than 5th because it would mean no Milwaukee in the 2nd rd.
I still think the Knicks will win 4 or 5 games of the 7 remaining so that should take care of it but still I’d rather have a playoff spot secured as soon as possible and Brooklyn losing both games this weekend is the quickest path to that.
Well so much for that, Brooklyn down at halftime has come out and destroyed the Heat in the 3rd quarter.
looks like Miami was passing a bong around in the locker room at the half…
Actually the Heat were up 14 in the 2nd quarter but were only up 3 at halftime, they must’ve started passing the bong around while they were still on the bench prior to halftime…
Probably just a vape…or gummies…they might be wearing off a bit now…
Well I guess Nets winning tonight but losing tomorrow is an even better scenario cause it’ll put both the Nets and Heat 2 back with 7 games left. Knicks can put the nail in the Heat’s 5th seed hopes coffin on Wednesday.
So how does the team that just toyed with us lose by 30 on their home court in a critical positioning game? That is a horrific loss for the Heat.
Heat loss tonight makes it even less likely for the Knicks to find themselves in the play-in tournament. For example, if Knicks win only 3 of their 7 remaining games, then BOTH Miami has to win 6 of 7 AND Nets win 7 of 8. Not happening.
I mean the Knicks had a 2 pt lead with 9 mins left in the game so not sure I’d say the Heat toyed with them. Heat just aren’t that talented outside of their Big 3 and have very little depth. They have a negative point differential on the season for a reason.
So now re: Mavs pick, I guess we’re rooting for SAC over UTA and LAC over NOP…The West is so freakin’ crazy!
@Alan, lol.
