Obviously a really compelling and interesting moment to be a Knick fan. My question, how good can this roster be? Does RJ really have another gear? Do we get better only with a consolidation trade? Is the trade market actually viable? I like the last two wins. I actually can’t remember a time in the last twenty years when the team has done this. Winning more games than we lose is also pretty novel, lol. Still, Brown missed those free throws, which are gimmes, and this is anything but a convincing win. So, where do we go from here?

“…Zion or Ja, whose biblical names would also have fit nicely on this roster.”

I did some research for the biblical connection for Ja…Temetrius has a nice ring to it…alas, no luck…

Ok y’all, I thought of a fire name for JK’s forthcoming solo album: “Knicks, Licks, & Metrics”

    https://hoopshype.com/lists/nba-rumors-kyrie-irving-dangelo-russell-rui-hachimura-cam-reddish-grayson-allen-suns/

“As reported in the most recent HoopsHype NBA notebook, the Knicks have expressed interest in acquiring Bucks sharpshooter Grayson Allen in trade talks involving Cam Reddish. However, Milwaukee has resisted including Allen in conversations surrounding Reddish thus far.

Instead, the Bucks have kicked around the idea of a 2023 second-round pick and salary fillers in trade talks with the Knicks for Reddish, league sources told HoopsHype.

Potential salary fillers could include George Hill and Serge Ibaka.”

We’re gonna turn the 19th pick in the 2021 draft into a 2023 Milwaukee 2nd. Masterclass.

Re: yesterday’s RJ discussion, like many here, I am largely underwhelmed by RJ’s progression from his rookie year. However, I do agree with E that his defense is better than the metrics indicate. I also agree that Thibs sees things in the film of RJ’s overall impact on D, especially given that he is handling an outsized role on the defensive end, that don’t show up in the metrics.

But he’s hardly a defensive stopper and his defense is not good enough to justify what he is going to get paid over the next 4 years. If he settles in at this level and doesn’t improve, you could find a better overall player for that money.

The thing that gives me hope is that he is still only 22. I don’t care how much NBA experience he has had to this point, that’s still a very young player. I like that he is so resilient and that the moment doesn’t seem to bother him. I like that he puts up 20 ppg even if inefficiently, which is harder to do than people give him credit for. I like that his right hand continues to improve. I like that his FT shooting is at a career high on more attempts per 36. I like that his 2pt% is at a career high on career avarage attempts. And I very much like that over his last 25 games he’s put up the stats E cited: 22ppg, .571 TS, 38.7 from 3. All during Oct and Nov, I was on the “this team needs to gel, let’s wait and see” mode, so it’s pretty easy for me to throw out the games before that and see RJ as the player he has been for those last 25 games. I’m reasonably optimistic that he can stabilize at those numbers, he doesn’t seem to be doing anything all that flukey and even if the 3pt% slips, the 2pt% and FG% can continue to get better.

And that in and of itself would justify his contract, which is all I’m really worried about. That he, Randle and Brunson are all making around the same money is a very good position to be in.

“We’re gonna turn the 19th pick in the 2021 draft into a 2023 Milwaukee 2nd. Masterclass.”

Yeah, I can barely sleep thinking about how much better off we’d be if only we had taken any of the guys picked 19-24.

Hill is cooked but you could do worse in terms of salary filler, we could probably actually use him or Ibaka on our bench, woeful as it is.

BTW has anyone noticed that the great Bones Hyland, with his RJ-ish .542 TS% on 28.5% usage, is being shopped by Denver? Maybe it’s because he’s the worst defensive guard in the NBA…his on/off is a ghastly -17.6.

Well the nice thing is we can watch RJ implement his usual lock-down, All-Defensive play today against the likes of Joe Harris, Royce O’Neale, Yuta Watanabe, and TJ Warren.

Without Durant that is a children’s wading pool of talent after Krazy Kyrie.

Has anyone noticed the mess the US men’s soccer team is in? They did ok in the World Cup and, to my admittedly untutored eye, played coherent team soccer in a way that European teams used to punish the US with. But the coach’s contract expired and the mother of one of the players who didn’t get playing time in the World Cup complained that the coach, Berhalter, kicked his girlfriend in public in 1991. That was over twenty years ago and said girlfriend ended up marrying him. But nonetheless Berhalter is under investigation and the team is being run by an interim coach. To make matters worse, the team’s sporting director, Stewart, resigned to take a similar position at PSV Eindhoven in Holland and the team’s GM also quit. So it’s going to be while before they actually have someone in place who can rehire Berhalter or choose a new coach.

I love how everytime someone on Knicks Twitter complains about Leon dumping Cam for a second rounder, a dozen other guys will say, “Look, that Charlotte pick was unlikely to convey as a first, so it’s no big deal.” AND NOBODY MENTIONS THAT WE TRADED A FIRST ROUND PICK IN A PRETTY DEEP DRAFT FOR A PICK UNLIKELY TO CONVEY

Did I somehow post the same angry comment twice? Huh. Sorry to double up on L’Affaire Du Incineration.

It’s a sunk cost, and whatever, but, yes, the series of transactions that led us to this point sucked. And that’s even with Bones struggling at the moment.

I’d like to thank Z-Man for reminding me of the CBA quirk wherein we could not have picked anyone who was selected at pick 25 or later with the 19th pick. I always forget about that one.

“AND NOBODY MENTIONS THAT WE TRADED A FIRST ROUND PICK IN A PRETTY DEEP DRAFT FOR A PICK UNLIKELY TO CONVEY”

The pick is unlikely to convey because no one knew that Miles Bridges was going to commit aggravated domestic violence. Before that, the chances of it conveying were actually good.

As to that draft being “pretty deep” I think the jury is still out. The only guys picked after #19 who seem to be surely destined for NBA starter quality are Grimes and Aldama. Maybe Herb Jones, but he has a .534b TS% on a 16% usage. Hyland is a no-D one-trick pony. Dosunmu has potential but his numbers are sketchy.

“I’d like to thank Z-Man for reminding me of the CBA quirk wherein we could not have picked anyone who was selected at pick 25 or later with the 19th pick. I always forget about that one.”

And I forgot about the “draft hand-wringing” quirk that says that you should insert the best player drafted more than a reasonable number of draft slots out to suit a tired narrative and totally ignore the more realistic probabilities. Or the actual hard evidence that those “pets” were passed over multiple times by the FO at later spots than #19. (not to mention that those pets are rapidly losing their “flash in the pan” luster.

You can criticize the process all you want, but any notion that in hindsight we’d likely be in a better place if we “just picked someone” without cherry-picking who that someone has been proven to be pie-in-the-sky bullshit.

    “gkhenman says:
    January 28, 2023 at 14:23
I wish we had just taken Grimes at 19.”

Same, imagine how much pointless kvetching that would have averted…

The incineration was a terrible idea at the time, with terrible logic behind it, and was then compounded by a second terrible trade for a terrible player halfway through his rookie contract who can’t get on the floor for a team with a terrible bench in his fourth year in the league.

You can’t win ‘em all, I guess.

The theory that when you trade a pick for nothing, you can only be said to have lost out on the opportunity to draft the specific players picked within 5 spots of the incinerated pick is really quite funny. Leads to many interesting conclusions.

Anyway, no point in crying over spilled milk given that this team is renowned for its depth and definitely doesn’t have a 6-man rotation.

“The theory that when you trade a pick for nothing, you can only be said to have lost out on the opportunity to draft the specific players picked within 5 spots of the incinerated pick is really quite funny. Leads to many interesting conclusions.”

Again, the art of ignoring that the drafting team passed over the preferred players multiple times, making it a near certainty that they would not have picked those players at #19, #21, #25 (we know that one for sure) #32, #34 or #36 is really quite funny (and grossly disingenuous.)

I’m wondering how many savior drafted at #19 or after would make a significant diference in our current rotation….other than the guys we actually did draft….

Let’s limit the conversation to players who are actually better than what we could have picked up in exchange for something like the #19 pick of a protected CHA pick. Seems like the magnificent Bones Hyland is there for the taking at that price…

PS they didn’t trade the pick for “nothing”. What they traded that pick for was used by the Hawks to acquire Dejounte Murray. Please stop exaggerating.

6 man rotation? Come on, man! They are playing 9 consistently.

In other news, OG took a nasty fall last night and injured his wrist.

Geo! Yes, Curry’s a worry, as they say. He’s been in and out of the lineup, but last I heard he was slated to play today.

    Jesus, stop me from rhyming…

I forgot to mention three of the nine in the rotation that just beat the Celtics are from that 2021 draft.

It was a stupid trade and the people who said it was stupid at the time were proven to be correct. The end. Any other rationalizing of it is bullshit.

“I forgot to mention three of the nine in the rotation that just beat the Celtics are from that 2021 draft.”

Right, but if we had only drafted all the best players taken at #19 or later we’d be so much better!

I just wish we’d taken the 41st pick in 2014 at 34 instead of Cleanthony Early, because I want someone on the Knicks who can pass like Jokic.

“I just wish we’d taken the 41st pick in 2014 at 34 instead of Cleanthony Early, because I want someone on the Knicks who can pass like Jokic.”

Right, but at least we drafted Cleanthony instead of trading the pick because now we know for sure that had they not traded the pick they wouldn’t have taken Jokic with it.

Trading picks away for nothing isn’t stupid, because you might take a bad player with that pick anyway.

Genius argument. Hang onto that one for dear life, amigo.

“It was a stupid trade and the people who said it was stupid at the time were proven to be correct. The end. Any other rationalizing of it is bullshit.”

I’m not rationalizing it, just pointing out that it was really no big deal then, as I did at the time, and it has now proven to be no big deal. To me and others, the stupid part is thinking that it was a big enough mistake that it needed to be cried about for years, or to exaggerate how bad it was by saying provably wrond inflammatory shit like “we traded the pick for nothing,” or whining about how much difference picking some random player there might have made to our current fortunes.

On a related note, I’m looking at The Ringer’s analysis of guys we might potentially pick at our upcoming draft slots (or at least I hope we do lest we have to endure more handwringing…)

Doesn’t seem to be an especially deep draft…

“We traded the pick for nothing” hardly seems inflammatory, considering Cam Reddish can’t get onto the floor despite this team’s very thin bench, and that he’s being shopped around for a garbage pick just to get him off the roster.

I mean, technically I guess that’s not “nothing” if you want to get all semantic about it, but for all intents and purposes it’s nothing.

I’m trying to understand “The incineration”. In 2021 we had 19 and twenty five (or something) going in and ended up with our starting two, our backup one, and a pick that we traded for Cam Reddish (who is still on the team, btw) We picked our guys not at the original spot, but later, and created some surplus value (who knows, maybe we get a good game from Cam before he’s done, or get someone for him. Ibaka?)

    What am I missing?

We didn’t trade the 19th pick for Cam Reddish. We traded a protected CHA pick for him. Two separate transactions.

ATL did something really smart with that pick because at the time it actually had value (although it seems that the trade was made the same day that Bridges was arrested…I wonder of SAS knew of that before they made the trade.)

I hated the trade for Reddish at the time, because I thought they could have done something better with the protected CHA pick. But it’s overkill to say that they traded the pick for “nothing.” The truth is, they traded it for the opportunity to find out if a long, tall wing with a prototypical NBA body, some impressive skills, and a great FT shooter could be developed into a starting 3-and-D wing with some tough love. That’s not the same as “nothing.” They misjudged Reddish’s potential, just like teams misjudge the potential of players they draft.

BUT as was pointed out, we drafted 4 players that year and the three that are not “draft and stash” types are in the rotation for a winning team. Regardless of the process, the actual outcome was that no harm was done via that draft and the team is just as well off right now as it would have been had virtually any FO just kept the #19 and #21 picks and selected who their scouts liked the most. I don’t see why that is so hard to comprehend, and why it keeps coming up.

The backup one (McBride) is not a valid NBA player, and we didn’t get “surplus value” from Cam Reddish, we got about 600 mostly terrible minutes from him and are now looking to dump him for a non-asset “asset.” Drafting Quentin Grimes at 25 does not make using the #19 pick in such a poor fashion excusable. You could say it mitigates the poor use of 19 somewhat, and sure, fair enough. But that was still an incredibly wasteful way to use that asset, and not indicative of a GM who knows what he’s doing.

It was bad process, as many pointed out at the time, and the result was bad, as evidenced by Cam Reddish’s unplayability.

I don’t really understand how this is debatable or why anybody wants to debate it. I’m kind of with Z-Man here in a way– this wasn’t in and of itself a crippling move, because if we had just drafted a bust at 19 and called it a day we wouldn’t be debating it, and this is kind of the same end result. But that would have at least been good process, bad result. This was bad process, bad result.

I’m slow to conclude that Deuce Mcbride is not a valid NBA player. He is a game-changing defender (not always but often) and he has shot well at every level before his 800 NBA minutes. You can’t teach the shit he does on D, but you can teach a guy to shoot. His floor is probably something like Jevon Carter, who is the primary backup PG for maybe the best team in the league.

Obviously his shooting is currently a huge detriment, especially when the other guys out there can’t shoot either. But now that Obi and IQ have picked it up a bit and Hart looks to have a little chemistry with him, I’m willing to keep the faith that he can start hitting a few open 3’s. At the very least, his defense is a blast to watch. I look forward to seeing if he can hang with Kyrie better than most…at least his size won’t hurt him.

I don’t want to evoke strat’s pro-Frank argument, but it is kind of nice that Deuce is plus-11 for both on-court and on/off plus minus. Is that just luck or is his defensive impact that good? Time will tell…

    Definitions still off.

The pick was “incinerated” because it was traded for a lower expected value in *the exact same asset class*. It was the 19th in “Year 1,” and it was traded for something with an expected value (based on number and probabilities) of something like 22 in Year 3.75.

It wasn’t giving the bodega owner a dollar for a scratch off and then not winning the scratch off. That isn’t “incinerating” the dollar. Incinerating the dollar is giving the bodega owner a dollar in exchange for 50 cents.

That’s the actual definition and has been since the day they made that ridiculous trade. It’s *also* stupid in pure basketball terms, which has been discussed and proven at length and I won’t bother again. But that just adds “stupid” to “incineration” — it doesn’t make it not incineration. Drafting Anthony Bennett with the first pick in the draft is stupid, but it’s not incineration.

It’s sort of sports-axiomatic that if you draft a guy at 19 that you could have gotten at 25 or 35 or 45, you haven’t managed the draft assets well — even if the guy you draft at 19 turns out to be an ok player. There’s no real need to re-litigate this axiom and that’s why most of us aren’t giving any shrift to the “they should have just drafted Grimes at 19” gambit.

To make matters worse, while technically not “incinerating” it, they *also* badly mismanaged last year’s 11th pick, a solid lottery pick. They’ve simply done a piss poor job in managing their draft assets, which is why a bunch of us don’t hold out much hope for all the “extra” firsts they’ve acquired. They’ll likely mismanage those, too, although there’s always hope.

To dwell on that one move is very myopic. They got the best player available at 19 with the 25th pick. They got 2 other players who may or may not make it in the league long term, but are currently in our rotation helping the team now. We still have plenty of picks to replace Cam, Deuce, and Sims if necessary. I give them at least a B+ for that draft. I don’t understand why people keep pointing to that trade as if it was definitive. For the record, I would have taken Jalen Johnson at 19.

“It wasn’t giving the bodega owner a dollar for a scratch off and then not winning the scratch off. That isn’t “incinerating” the dollar. Incinerating the dollar is giving the bodega owner a dollar in exchange for 50 cents.”

    Isn’t that incinerating 50 cents?

“I’m kind of with Z-Man here in a way– this wasn’t in and of itself a crippling move”

I’d go further and say that it wasn’t even a remotely damaging move compared to the REAL blunders, like drafting Obi over Hali. And that if we had just drafted Grimes and McBride rather than try to be creative with trades, we would all be at leasty kind of okay with the outcome. Yet the amount of times and the level of anguishwith which it has been brought up is WAY out of proportion to its impact on the current team.
And nobody (certainly not me) has actually “defended” the moves. I (and others) am just irked with the harping on them.

Also, it ignores some other consequential things, both positive and negative, the we could have done in that draft. For example, there was lots of chatter about using both the #19 and #21 picks to trade for Chris Duarte. Not THAT’S good old-fashion incineration for you!

It is incinerating 50 cents which is why the term “charred” was also bandied about by way of trying to make common cause.

Technically, the pick was “charred.” It wasn’t literally burned to zero, so there’s a bit of poetic license embedded in “incineration” but people should kinda be able to deal.

Woj: “Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner has agreed on a two-year, $60M contract extension that includes an additional $17.1M renegotiation on his 2022-2023 salary, his agent Austin Brown of CAA Sports tells ESPN.”

Z-Man’s argument has always been that it doesn’t matter they gave away a first round pick for peanuts because he doesn’t think we would’ve picked someone good with the pick. He dresses it up in many different ways but that’s the argument, full stop.

Maybe he’s right, but there were a lot of good players available. So valuing a shitty future pick more than that pick was either a horrible evaluation of the remaining talent or a recognition that we wouldn’t pick any of the good players available. How any of that could possibly be construed as exculpatory continues to be beyond me!

E, even if I agreed with all of your logic (which I don’t but whatever) why can’t we just say at this point that we dodged a bullet with the way that #19 pick was handled and move on? As to 2022’s draft, pt did a real time analysis that iirc suggested that if you consider the “point valuations” associated with the draft transactions, it was largely a wash. And even if not, just not enough divergence to take away much of anything from where we stand right now in terms of roster, cap space and draft assets.

Of the moves they made on that night, that was less than ideal. We all agree on that. I’m still saying they get a B+ on that years draft. What’s everybody else’s grade and why?

I’m not as sold on any of the three as board consensus appears to be, but net-net it was a good draft in terms of the players they got. It’s hard to forgive a first rounder just disappearing from the asset chest (I’m assuming it becomes a MIL 2 which yes, isn’t entirely disappearing but kinda is) but they otherwise did ok. I’d give them a B.

I’m terrified about what they’re going to do with their draft picks in the future.

I really wish Phil Jackson’s obsession with centers who could pass yielded us the guy I’m watching right now

Myles Turner at 35.1M, 30M and 30M seems untradeable to me. That is a lot of money for a C.

“Z-Man’s argument has always been that it doesn’t matter they gave away a first round pick for peanuts because he doesn’t think we would’ve picked someone good with the pick. He dresses it up in many different ways but that’s the argument, full stop.”

No, that hasn’t been my argument…ever.

-I never said it doesn’t matter…only that it doesn’t matter nearly as much as you think it does.

-I never said it was okay to trade away a draft pick for peanuts…and have insisted that that is not a proper characterization for the return we got on that pick. At the time I considered it a small devaluation, and Miles Bridges was a big part of that calculation.

-I didn’t say that we would have picked someone bad with the pick. I said that we would have picked Quentin Grimes with it. I also said that if it wasn’t Quentin Grimes, the evidence of the draft order for the rest of the evening suggests that it wouldn’t have been anyone you coveted either. And now it turns out that those guys have turned out to not very good anyway.

-But the most important thing I have said over and over is that in the big scheme of things, it turned out as well as one could have hoped…in draft parlance, it’s like a 75%ile outcome or better compared to the doom and gloom you and others have spouted for years. It’s time to let it go and stop continually bringing it up. It’s a trickle of water under the bridge.

it is pretty suspect that bones hyland is mentioned as the supreme example that the Incineration was ‘no big deal’… nay.. PROVEN to be ‘no big deal’…. when i kind of remember how we have his actual carbon copy on this team who has no doubt been championed by this very same person as one of this front offices’ greatest successes…

and moving the goalposts of the original argument behind the Incineration is quite infuriating…. it was never labeled as franchise altering or crippling… but it’s a signal that this front office doesn’t have what it takes to get this team to where it needs to go…. you only get so many opportunities in this league to improve this team and just evaporating the little opportunities you have because you’re so sure of how it’s going to turn out is not even how actual contenders that are cap starved behave….

not valuing the little decisions results in what you see now…. a team where it’s best players were mostly picked by his predecessor where the bench …who were all handpicked out by this front office… is languishing playing zero minutes and despite all this wild success we’re so happy about is likely going to end up with a 7th seed….

when you can’t fight the argument just change the argument and you’ll never be wrong!

and really if you can’t look at what bones hyland.. jalen johnson or isaiah jackson and not think they can’t be STARTING for us right now… you’re not really paying that much attention to this argument… there’s probably a dozen or so names who would also be MUCH better than either rokas or deuce who we just so happened to think it was no big deal we incinerated these picks for because they were so good….

there’s no way to cut it.. it was terrible… and if you think wasting draft picks is no big deal… then how is it that all these low first rd picks are also valued by you guys as these incredible assets? and these might not even convey! and we’re supposed to get stars for these picks…

    how does anyone square this?

“I’m terrified about what they’re going to do with their draft picks in the future.”

…which is a very fair take. I’m never confident about what the Knicks will do in the draft. It’s also fair to say that they miscalculated about the Donovan Mitchell situation and how much the protected picks would be worth in a trade.

It’s really more about magnitude and timing than anything else. I like where we are right now, and that 6 of the 9 players in our rotation are our own draft picks, and that we have no one making over $30M and have all of our own picks and then some. I like that Randle is still on our team and that he’s winning over, or at least shutting up his most ardent detractors, including you. It’s the best I’ve felt as a Knicks fan for a long time and constantly harping on the one bad move in the 2021 draft is an unnecessary wet blanket.

Did someone actually just suggest that Immanuel Quickley and Bones Hyland are carbon copies of each other?

i guess we should instead harp on the whole ‘mission accomplished’ move of kemba walker to really wet someone’s blankets because i know we haven’t done that enough times….
