The Wizards pick we have will probably never convert but this is likely the last time you can fool someone into thinking it might.

Now that I’ve sufficiently recovered from the heart attack I had when Mitch went out….

We were never in that game. Mentally or physically. The guys looked spent- with the exception of Brunson and Sims. And you gotta believe JB is tiiiiide regardless of how he looked. I know his back hurts for sure- from carrying this team. I thought for sure we’d beat the Wiz at The Garden. If this team is gonna play well for the rest of the season, we’ve got to have a bench player(or 2) that makes Thibs feel comfortable giving Randle & RJ a breather. We absolutely have to. I vote for a combo forward that can score on his own- but if it becomes a Crowder and Bullock, then I’m ok with it. Thibs would just have to use a 10 man rotation, but limit Deuce to maybe 8-10 minutes a game. That would be a hell of a lot of defensive effort on that 2nd unit with Deuce, Crowder, Bullock, and Quickley- Sims too if Hart gets moved in one of these trades. Regardless..something has to give before we lose grip

    Washington’s 1st round pick to New York protected for selections 1-14 in 2023, 1-12 in 2024, 1-10 in 2025 and 1-8 in 2026

Given that they are like the Knicks and refuse to tear it down and rebuild, will the Wiz be this bad for 4 consecutive years? I don’t think so.

About the game, we were off from 3P land and that usually seals the deal, but on top of that Randle was playing very bad. He let Wright go for an easy bucket in the final minute and when we needed stops, that shows how bad his defense was last night. We only win when 2 of Brunson, Randle and RJ are playing very well. Last night only Brunson was playing great, RJ had his moments but then he faded.

Can we not make a trade to accommodate Thibodeau’s Ahab tendencies? This is not the playoffs. Derrick Rose and Fournier are fine rotation players. We aren’t good enough to use resources to add another guard. This is a play in team right now folks. Call me when they make the conference finals, and we can talk about using resources to add win now pieces.

Now if you want to trade Randle or Barrett right now when they are both in or near a period of good play, count me in, but it should never be a downgrade in picks or youth, so sure, I’ll trade RJ for another young guy or picks. To me, the winning players on this team are Robinson, Grimes, Quickley and Brunson. If you’re not planning on rebuilding, which is what a smart GM would recognize as a necessity, then you start with those 4 and see if you can sell high with any of the rest of the roster.

I so badly wanted to believe in the Randleaissance but my faith is being tested. The ten game trend is not looking good–.526 TS% with 30.5% USG. After being assisted on between 50%-60% of his shots in October, November, and December, he’s down to 37% in January. It’s absolutely noticeable that he’s calling his own number more often and the results speak for themselves. Looking like a guy reverting to bad habits. Prove me wrong!

If Mitch tore something in his hand I expect a pretty steep nosedive. Him having the best individual net rating on the team is no coincidence–it’s a combination of him being very good and his backup(s) mostly sucking. Him missing time is thus a recipe for us playing badly.

“Given that they are like the Knicks and refuse to tear it down and rebuild, will the Wiz be this bad for 4 consecutive years?”

well seeing as how porzingis might leave and beal might just collapse towards the end of these next 4 years… it’s probably a possibility… maybe likely…

Chuckers don’t change their stripes. It’s folly to think they will.

This team desperately needs to move beyond the Randle/Thibodeau co-dependency.

As I said in the prior thread, the Wizards are NOT that bad. Beal missed a bunch of games this year. Even when he was playing, they were often missing key role players from a team without much depth. This was one of the few times they had everyone and it showed. The ball was moving really well. They aren’t good enough to make real noise, but when healthy they are good enough to compete with us.

This is not real basketball anymore anyway. It’s lotto.

They hit 38.1% of their 3s (16) and we hit 26.9% of ours (7).

Anyone can beat anyone on any given night when the game is all about shooting 3s.

Next time the 3s could easily go the other way.

Who was it that predicted E would return after a single OT loss on the 2nd night of a back-to-back where the other team was rested?

    Props to you.

Trying to focus on the positives, it’s great to have a player like Brunson.

    @NBA_University:
After last night, Jalen Brunson has dropped 25+ in 8 straight games—the longest streak by a Knicks guard since 1965 (wow).
99th percentile in isolation efficiency, 94th scoring gravity, 40% on catch and shoot 3s, and 39% on pull-up 3s, NYK 25-21.

The twitter theme resonating with me most this morning is Obi. Lots of people pointing out how no one passes him the ball and how strange it is to stick a player with his skills in a corner. Just let him be fun at least.

TBF about my comment re Mitch last night, it’s true that things did really hit the fan when Sims fouled out. If Mitch misses extended time I will be very interested to see how we adapt.

things did really hit the fan when Sims fouled out.

Surprised they went with Grimes over Hartenstein there. It’s the top 5 players but Thibs must be just about done with Hartenstein to have zero rim protection.

    Hartensteins TS% by month

    Oct & Nov: 59% in 22 games
    Dec: 48% in 15 games
    Jan: 42% in 9 games

Hartenstein was comically inept in the first half. There was a four or five possession stretch where he just seemed be malfunctioning. He put up a few floaters that looked like they had been launched by ballista and he had open guys to pass the ball to.

I remain bullish on Hart, sort of. I think he can contribute. But its been really rough lately.

Disheartening loss, as with so many it was an utterly win-able game, the lack of energy on both sides of the ball and inept play lost it. We are our own worst enemy.

I really want to like Hart (one of the few NBA players outside of Kemba who smiles), but if Mitch comes back okay I’d be fine with having him join Evan and Cam in the hooded cheering section.

I briefly got excited after Hartenstein’s dunk and his activity level, but by the 3rd missed floater it was all eye rolls.

Even with all that I kept thinking Thibs would reinsert him because there were several plays where the paint was wide open. Also, those two possessions where the Wizards compiled about 4,000 offensive rebounds.

For awhile now, I’ve been thinking Hart is just playing poorly, but I guess I’ve now come around to thinking he’s just playing hurt. He can’t be this bad.

I did think the 2nd unit looked much better overall. It was entirely RJ in the first stunt and entirely IQ in the 2nd stint. That may not be sustainable, but was refreshing to see most the bench pieces with positive plus-minus. The loss was on the starters.

Hart is awful. Sims is green. Obi and Randle combo is in rear view mirror. Mitch is the most unexpedable Knick player this season!!!!

It’s kind of funny to think what a Reddish for Bullock deal would be like, as it would be “Let’s sign Fournier for twice the money as Bullock, then trade a singed first for Cam… so we can then trade Cam for Bullock so that Bullock can play over Fournier.”

Magnus Carlsen is in danger of losing two classical chess games in a row.
When was the last time that happened?

I feel much better about the Knicks now. 🙂

“The twitter theme resonating with me most this morning is Obi. Lots of people pointing out how no one passes him the ball and how strange it is to stick a player with his skills in a corner. Just let him be fun at least.”

Some of it is probably that he’s still not 100% off the injury, but some of it is defense.

Everyone knows by now that the way he scores efficiently is by leaking out in transition or getting a lob on a cut.

They will leave him wide open on the perimeter until he starts punishing them with 3s or can create something off the dribble. This is what I was talking about when I used downplay his usage/efficiency stats. Unless you are a very versatile scorer, some defenses will minimize what you can do. He’s very limited.

Reddish for Bullock and then Bullock in the rotation is my red line. Won’t be able to do it anymore until there’s regime change.

“Reddish for Bullock and then Bullock in the rotation is my red line. Won’t be able to do it anymore until there’s regime change.”

I’d rather play and develop Reddish also, but I think at this point we know there’s an issue between Reddish and Thibs. Whatever it is, it’s better to get something for him than nothing. They got a 2nd rounder back as part of the original Knox/Reddish trade. If they can get another one as part of this deal, it’s not a major loss of value relative to the 1st rounder they gave up. If that’s the way it goes, it cost very little to take a look at Reddish. Knox was never going to play for Thibs in NY anyway. They should have been on the same page though.

    Down goes Magnus!

    Down goes Magnus!

    Down goes Magnus!

It looks like the next generation of chess players is going to be awesome.

“Magnus Carlsen is in danger of losing two classical chess games in a row. When was the last time that happened?”

    chess24.com
    @chess24com
Magnus Carlsen loses 2 classical games in a row for the 1st time since Norway Chess 2015 as 18-year-old Nodirbek Abdusattorov takes the sole lead!

will the Wiz be this bad for 4 consecutive years?

It feels like they’ve been this bad for 40 consecutive years.

I know they had one run with Arenas and might have even won a playoff series w Wall. But they’re track record during my lifetime is awful.

Yeah, but I think Thibs should be fired so I don’t really care about what issues he has with players. He’s a neanderthal weirdo.

The Wiz actually looked like they had something going with a young Wall and a young Beal who not only won a series but took the Celtics to 7 in the second round — but it wound up not happening. (*) It’s hard to build an NBA contender.

(*) In terms of nomenclature, even that wasn’t really “contention,” but it’s still leaps and bounds above what the Knicks have been able to put together.

Sorry for all chess posts, but this is pretty huge.

    2017: 6

The deal would probably be more about cap stuff than player talent. Dallas clears $5M that’s guaranteed to Bullock. Knicks keep $10M in packing peanuts to cushion a potential trade as they’ll be over the cap anyway.

Cam is a RFA and not really worth a 2nd deal. He was unhappy riding the bench for Atlanta and will be unhappy riding the bench for the Knicks. I don’t see much use in developing him at this point.

I appreciate the chess posts. Thinking he’s burnt out and needs a break. Probably why he wants to bow out of the world championship.

Just so it’s clear, Reddish isn’t the red line. Reddish for one of Thibs’s recycled aging mercs that he whined and cried about for months on end is the red line.

“Yeah, but I think Thibs should be fired so I don’t really care about what issues he has with players. He’s a neanderthal weirdo.”

    lol

According to my research of the leading blogs for every NBA team, fans almost universally hate the coach’s rotations and system. 🙂

If he was playing Rose or Fournier now to lengthen the rotation he’d be getting trashed for that too.

On this Cam issue, we don’t know what happened behind the scenes. I’m not sure who deserves the blame, but at some point you have to move on and play the guy if you need some help scoring off the bench. D’Antoni eventually played Robinson and even Marbury got some run.

    Wizard’s last 10 picks:
    2022 – #10
    2021 – #15
    2020 – #9
    2019 – #9
    2018 – #15
    2017 – #22
    2016 – #13
    2015 – #15
    2014 – #18
    2013 – #3
I’m pretty sure they won’t make an effort to be top10 (2025) and top8 (2026) in two consecutive seasons just to make you guys right, but i guess we’ll have to wait and see. I’ve been wrong before.

“According to my research of the leading blogs for every NBA team, fans almost universally hate the coach’s rotations and system.”

The weird thing is that for almost the first time in Thibs’ entire reign, when he first went with the nine-man rotation I suddenly had no real complaint. He was playing the right, mostly young, players and with roughly sensible and appropriate minutes. And benching them what sucked the worst. I’m sure it helped enormously that it was successful, but I’ve been perfectly happy to kvetch about rotations during winning streaks before this.

It’s kind of all gone to shit since, however, with too many minutes (see Randle and Brunson being 1 and 3 in minutes since mid December) and various other inexplicable (to me) decisions.

E, there’s certainly criticism to throw at Thibs, but a red line on a trade that we ship out a player that doesn’t play and we get a player that’ll be a backup at best, i agree with Noble that is kind of strange. There’s a lot of things much more important than this to draw the line.

Cyber, I think the concern would be that they’ll tank in that final year in order to keep that pick. It’ll look worse on the front office if the pick ends up at 9 or 10 and they lose it.

I still think there’s a good chance it converts bit there’s always a concern.

Of course even in that case we turned a 1st into MIL’s 1st, DET’s 1st (or high 2nd), and 2 2nds. That seems like more than fair compensation since it also allowed us to dump salary.

“E, there’s certainly criticism to throw at Thibs, but a red line on a trade that we ship out a player that doesn’t play and we get a player that’ll be a backup at best, i agree with Noble that is kind of strange. There’s a lot of things much more important than this to draw the line.”

It will be final confirmation that nothing is ever going to change. That’s why it will be a red line. If they cave to Thibs on this after his two-year tantrum, I’m done until there’s regime change. I have no interest in purgatory behind veterans and recycled mercs and a weirdo meddling coach and an iso-heavy primitive offense. Others’ mileage of course will vary.

It will be final confirmation that nothing is ever going to change. That’s why it will be a red line. If they cave to Thibs on this after his two-year tantrum, I’m done until there’s regime change.

What a ridiculous statement. Has Thibs ever said anything about Reggie Bullocks since he was traded?

Maybe instead of it being some huge argument between Rose and Thibs about keeping Bullocks, it was a debate between two people, they both respected each other’s opinions, and maybe Leon wasn’t totally against hte idea of keeping Bullocks but just went in a different direction. And now there’s a chacne to bring a guy back that everyone, including the coach, LOVED?

Like it isn’t always “I’m right, you’re wrong, this is the decision.” There’s nuance to this stuff.

Bullocks as a bench piece for a season and a half is fine. What’s the big deal? Cam hasn’t worked out. our bench needs help. He’s a good defensive player. He’s played with the core guys before (including Brunson). He’ll know his role and he can potentially hit threes and score a bit.

Like why is it a big deal? And it hasn’t even happened yet.

Thibs has never “thrown a tantrum.” You’re the one throwing the tantrum.

Cyber, I think the concern would be that they’ll tank in that final year in order to keep that pick. It’ll look worse on the front office if the pick ends up at 9 or 10 and they lose it.

My reasoning is that i think they’ll keep trying to get to the play-in in those four seasons, that’s just what they do. So unless they pivot to tanking on the last two seasons, it’s very likely that the pick will convey.

I don’t think trading a shitty player on an expiring contract is “caving to Thibs” on anything. It’s just what teams do with expiring players they don’t want to bring back, rather than lose them for nothing.

Not wanting Cam Reddish is not some Thibs bugaboo. We’re struggling to get a second-round pick for the guy. There’s not a thriving market for bad players who think they’re good.

The Wizards will absolutely tank to keep that pick if they’re not good in the final year. It’s worth nothing to them to not tank and convey a pick in the 9-14 range to us, and worth a ton to them to minimally tank and keep the pick. If you’re not a good team, tanking to keep a top-8 pick is criminally easy.

Like why is it a big deal?

    *********************************

Because it’s an antithetical transaction to building a contender and is indicative of a philosophy that is antithetical to building a contender.

And, like no, “everyone” didn’t LOVE him. You might have. That’s not everyone. I didn’t like him that much — he’s one of Mills’s mercs, after all — and then he got lit up by Trae in the playoffs and I now think Thibs’s obsession with him is even more ridiculous.

In case it isn’t clear yet, I am not interested in Thibs’s tinkering for marginal wins with veterans and mercs and his boys and weird styles. If you want to be, you can be.

***It feels like they’ve been this bad for 40 consecutive years… their track record during my lifetime is awful.***

The Wizards have won 4 playoff series this century, which is 400% more than the Knicks have won.

I don’t think trading a shitty player on an expiring contract is “caving to Thibs” on anything. It’s just what teams do with expiring players they don’t want to bring back, rather than lose them for nothing.

    **************************

I guess you’re just going to ignore the second leg of the transaction, huh?

I don’t care if they trade Cam Reddish. I do care if they trade Cam Reddish for one of Thibs’s weirdo obsessions. That’s absolutely caving to Thibs.

The Knicks say Mitchell Robinson underwent surgery today to repair his fractured right thumb and will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

And right when the schedule is going to get much harder. I want us to make the playoffs at this point, but I wonder how precipitous a fall in the standings would have to be for Leon to admit defeat and go chasing Victor or Scoot.

We’re about to lose a lot of games without Mitch. His offensive rebounding and rim protection are not going to be easily replaced.

“I don’t think trading a shitty player on an expiring contract is ‘caving to Thibs’”

WHY TRADE FOR HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE THEN???

The reasoning around here gets ludicrous sometimes.

This was the same FO that traded FOR Reddish. This isn’t some really bad luck that fell out of the sky that Rose now needs to fix… the bad luck IS ROSE!

That’s gonna be a major problem.

I think Sims & Hartenstein will be fine on the boards. It’s everything else that might go to shit.

Looks like we’re in for about 14 games without Mitch. 4-10 might be optimistic.

“I guess you’re just going to ignore the second leg of the transaction, huh?”

If the Knicks trade Cam Reddish for Reggie Bullock and we subsequently hear there was a better off on the table, then sure, there might be something to this.

That seems kind of unlikely though because no one really wants Cam Reddish.

“WHY TRADE FOR HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE THEN???

The reasoning around here gets ludicrous sometimes.”

Are you mistaking me for someone who hasn’t bashed the hell out of the series of transactions that got us to this point?

    Obi-Randle, anyone?

There’s going to be an unfortunate ‘rubber-necking at an accident’ feel watching this team over the next few weeks…

WHY TRADE FOR HIM IN THE FIRST PLACE THEN???

    * The rumor was a 2nd rd pick & Bullock for Cam

    * Bullock has been a productive NBA player in his life

    * Bullock’s salary can be used for trades next year

Bullock will never get better, and Cam might, but like I said, then why even do this trade in the first place? *Either Rose is a bad GM, or Thibs is an idiot coach.

Look, I don’t want to become E or anything, but I’ve been backing off this team even with the marginal wins because you just know the FO won’t do the right thing.

I don’t want to wait around for the other shoe to drop AND waste many hours of my week in the meantime.

*These two are not mutually exclusive

We desperately need to upgrade the bench at lead guard and the 5. Sims and Hart are a large downgrade from Mitch, and we can’t score at all. Either Rose needs burn or, if he’s washed, we need to acquire a bench PG or some offensively minded 5 that can nominally rim protect to open everything up.

No Mitch over the next couple weeks is scary–if we just default to starting Hart, we’re going to lose a ton of games. But, this might allow for an Obi-Randle renaissance (Thibs has already been going with Randle at the 5 in closeout situations the last couple games, maybe this can get Obi going.) Hopefully this causes us to make a determinate move at the trade deadline that shores us up (since we’re going to be battling with Miami for the 6th seed) without sacrificing assets.

Also, it’s clear why our offense is iso-heavy and “primitive”: it’s because Jalen Brunson is an elite iso scorer–literally one of the best in the game currently. And this is true of Randle to a lesser extent (though his recent trend is worrisome). Also, none of our 3 point shooters are particularly reliable beyond Grimes, so players start calling their own numbers.

Is Cam going to get better in the next 36 games?

If you’re asking why we traded for Cam in the first place, I’d direct you to the threads from earlier this season when he was playing.

I know it surprises people on this blog but GMs make mistakes.

“Either Rose is a bad GM, or Thibs is an idiot coach.”

Rose made a series of shitty transactions that led to a shitty player in Cam Reddish being on the team. That doesn’t mean we should pretend Cam Reddish doesn’t suck though, so we should trade him for the best return whether that’s Bullock or whatever else.

I mean, do you want to re-sign him?

They incinerated the pick in the first place because of Thibodeau and his weird obsessions. Now it’s going to wind up as Reggie Bullock, another of his weird obsessions.

    That can’t be abided.

The offense was iso-heavy and primitive long before Jalen Brunson came along.

I recall Bullock being good for us the last time he played. Why is he a weird obsession?

Some intriguing trade targets that can be had for not much in terms of assets that fit my criteria from earlier (shoring up the bench via adding a guard or frontcourt player):

    Alex Caruso
    Javonte Green
    Mo Bamba
    Mo Wagner
    Kenrich Williams
    Dario Saric
    Charles Bassey
    Josh Richardson
    Zach Collins
    Tony Bradley

We need to use our few tradeable salaries (Fournier, Rose, and Reddish; assuming we don’t dangle Obi) wisely if we want to improve this team in the short to medium term. The Bullock trade would be fine but I think Reddish could be better used for something with more upside (I’m sure a bad team wouldn’t mind taking a flyer on him, for example.)

We all have our memories, but I recall him getting lit up in the playoffs as Thibs got badly outcoached and then Thibs lobbying for him in the press and then whining to the press when he signed elsewhere.

He’s one of Thibs’s guys which rubs off on his reputation with me. Is what it is.

Let’s please not pretend Tom Thibodeau isn’t an obsessive personality.

Anything or anyone that shows that Tom Thibodeau has any influence on the personnel of this team is quite likely to wind up persona non grata in these parts. Again, is what it is.

The Knicks aren’t going to contend with Tom Thibodeau around and I therefore want Tom Thibodeau gone. Don’t care about his tweaks, don’t care about him “doing more with less,” don’t care about his marginal wins, don’t care about him “wisely shortening the rotation,” just don’t care. If anything, I affirmatively don’t want those things, because they block or get in the way of actual contention.

RAPTOR had him at +2.5 on defense in the playoffs. If he got lit up it’s probably because Trae Young lights up a lot of players. You slow Trae Young down, you don’t stop him.

Reggie Bullock has had a terrible season, but has had good seasons in the not-so-distant past and has a team-friendly contract. He’s not particularly intriguing, but may well represent the best possible return for Cam Reddish, because Cam Reddish sucks and isn’t going to get us much.

So if Bullock is the best return, whatever. The consequential trades were made before this. Incinerating the 19th pick was god awful and trading the ashes for Cam Reddish was pretty stupid too, but that has no bearing on how we should view Cam Reddish.

The consequential trades were made before this. Incinerating the 19th pick was god awful and trading the ashes for Cam Reddish was pretty stupid too, but that has no bearing on how we should view Cam Reddish.

Yup. Sunk cost fallacy. There’s no defending the two trades that got us here, but Cam sucks, and thus his market is what it is. Get what you can for him and move on. Bullock theoretically fills a need. If he’s the best we can get, make the trade. If we can do better, then make that trade instead.

Why would a team give up a player who doesn’t suck and who has a “team-friendly contract” in exchange for a player who sucks?

Whatever delta Reggie Bullock would bring — I’ll assume without really believing that there will be one — is pointless anyway. If not counterproductive.

There is no point to these incremental improvements that bring marginal wins. None, zero, zilch, nada. (I thought there was something like at least factional KB consensus on this one.) I do agree that they serve as content and discussion fodder during a long NBA season where not a lot goes on, so let’s discuss by all means — but in basketball terms, they’re completely pointless. If not counterproductive.

I love Mitch, and I think he’s a very important part of the Knicks, but I don’t think he’s so important that they’re going to go from slightly over .500 to worst team in the NBA due to his absence. I think they’ll do a lot better in the next 14 than we expect, especially once Thibs has a chance to tinker a bit. This isn’t to knock Mitch’s importance to the team, as it is huge, I just think it’s more a case of them being a slightly under .500 team without him versus an above .500 team with him. And a slightly under .500 team could still easily go 8-6/9-5 (even 10-4) in the next 14. It’s all about matchups. The Nets will be without Durant, for instance, and that team was literally based around Durant, so without him, they don’t make any sense at all.

Now that bench scoring has been exposed as a desperate, desperate need, it seems we should look to our in-house options in Rose and Fournier before trading any assets for guys that might not even be better than those guys.

I mean, last season isn’t exactly ancient history and both Rose and Fournier’s production from then would be immensely helpful right now if they could replicate it.

I also think we should use this opportunity to really see what we have in Obi. Some people think we’re not utilizing his talents well while others think he’s just bad. I’m more in the former camp, but regardless let’s find out. Get him 10+ FGA per game and see what happens. It’s probably our highest upside play while Mitch is out, so I’m not advocating for some kind of tank.

I’m definitely not against making a trade, but I’m less sanguine about this season’s prospects than I was a few weeks ago so I’m a pretty hard no on trading any kind of first for someone unless they can be a long-term contributor.

Some of the guys on Silky’s list fit that description, but we should probably withdraw from the vaunted Eric Gordon sweepstakes.

“Why would a team give up a player who doesn’t suck and who has a “team-friendly contract” in exchange for a player who sucks?”

Why would that same team let Jalen Brunson walk for nothing, only to watch him be an all-star? Teams do dumb things, and if the Mavs want to do (another) dumb thing that benefits us we should roll out the red carpet.

What was mentioned was Bullock and a 2nd for Cam, and a 2nd might be the best draft compensation being offered for him with Bullock being the contract attached.

Even without the 2nd, it’s probably a trade worth making because Bullock has another year on his contract. That would give us more time to make productive use of the salary slot in some form or fashion.

The alternative is to let Reddish walk for nothing in an offseason in which cap space does nothing for us. This is basic asset management.

“Now that bench scoring has been exposed as a desperate, desperate need, ”

    *********************

“Exposed” isn’t really it. It was *always the case* that the “nine-man rotation” was filled with mediocre or poor players and wasn’t going to work. It was never the cause of the better team play and could not have been. It is never the case that playing worse players leads to better play.

But that obvious fact was shouted down and now the down shouters have lurched into the next thing, which is that the stupid rotation — that was *always stupid* — needs augmenting.

Consistency is the better course. When you find yourself arguing that the insertion of Jericho Sims and Miles McBride into the rotation, and playing Jericho Sims and Isaiah Hartenstein together, turned an NBA team’s fortunes around, it’s best to stop and reassess.

Why would that same team let Jalen Brunson walk for nothing, only to watch him be an all-star? Teams do dumb things, and if the Mavs want to do (another) dumb thing that benefits us we should roll out the red carpet.

    ***************************
The Knicks are the kingpins of doing dumb things. In the spirit of the previous post, when you find yourself thinking the Knicks are outsmarting someone, it’s best to reassess.

Jalen Brunson was an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team. The Mavs didn’t trade him.

I also think we should use this opportunity to really see what we have in Obi. Some people think we’re not utilizing his talents well while others think he’s just bad. I’m more in the former camp, but regardless let’s find out. Get him 10+ FGA per game and see what happens.

    ***************************

Of course this is what they should do, but they don’t have the right head coach for such a thing.

Why would a team give up a player who doesn’t suck and who has a “team-friendly contract” in exchange for a player who sucks?

I’ll answer this, I think for the 3rd time, it’s because Dallas wants to clear cap space for next year and the Knicks may want to keep money on the cap, or at least get a 2nd rd pick out of a player.

It’s uncontroversial that getting a 2nd out of Cam Reddish is better than letting him walk.

    Also, Bullock does suck.

Jalen Brunson was an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team. The Mavs didn’t trade him.

This is an idiotic statement. Cuban had the chance to extend Brunson a year earlier for like half the price of what we signed him for. Even before last season, it was clear Brunson was a good player and someone any team would want to keep, especially for what they could have gotten him for. But Cuban got cute and thought he could keep him. Then Brunson blew up and he lost him for nothing.

The Mavs have done exactly one good thing since winning their championship. They traded for Doncic. Everything else they have done has been idiotic to disasterous.

    both Rose and Fournier’s production

I love what D Rose did for us when we traded for him. But his production from last season was all in the first 6 weeks before his injury.

It could be the case that his last injury was the one that finally did him in and now he is permanently washed.

Someone made this point the other day. D Rose is literally Thibs favorite player of all time. IF D Rose had anything left in the tank at all, you would think Thibs would play him. I can see why he wouldn’t play Cam or Fournier but the idea that he just doesn’t want to play Rose anymore and is too dumb to realize what Rose’s production could do for us…I don’t buy it. Thibs and D Rose are extremely tight.

The Mavs went to the Western Conference Finals last year. Please stop imagining that the Knicks have done something like this, or are in any danger of doing so in the foreseeable future.

Outside of fantasyland, nothing is happening here that warrants any kind of condescension toward any other organization in the association, much less one that was in the final four less than a year ago — the same organization that less than five years ago heisted away probably the best player in the league for a mere one extra unprotected one. The Knicks aren’t even the Wizards.

Nothing is happening here. No one outside small, dreamy factions of the Knicks fanbase thinks it is. There’s nothing here. Nothing’s bubbling up, they aren’t on the runway, no one is looking on with awe or wonder or fear at what the Knicks are “building.”

Not that I really care, and it could have been Father Time coming early — but D. Rose was never really the same after Thibs ran him into the ground in the Hawks series.

E, you might want to check the definition of “exposed”

    *******************

I don’t want to pay the $100 for the online OED lol.

Doesn’t “exposed” imply “something showing up that wasn’t immediately apparent”? Sorry, but the Sims/McBride/Hartenstein thing was immediately apparent.

If it’s being used in the basketball sense of “the shitty lineup has finally been exposed,” that’s cool, except no one was talking that way 2-3 weeks ago.

Exec Summary: It’s a dumbass lineup and always was.

If you go on to say a bunch of people were wrong about it and that you needed to tell them that, then… 🤔

Kinda seems like you described a situation that would be a perfect example of exposed.

Also, a bunch of the other stuff you said was wrong.

Not that I really care, and it could have been Father Time coming early — but D. Rose was never really the same after Thibs ran him into the ground in the Hawks series.

The Hawks series also caused inflation, the omicron variant, and the January 6th insurrection

Rose put up a 2.3 BPM last season.

He was tied for 9th with Tatum in per minute RAPTOR among players over 600min.

Amazing how we get a barrage of annoying posts the day after a bad Knicks loss but absolute crickets the previous couple of weeks when the Knicks were winning.

Ah, another Angry Ench thread hijack.

Best reason to hope for another winning streak…

I do get to go off and do some chores though, so there’s that.

D Rose got run into the ground in the hawks series!!!!!

A six game series where he started in the last four games ran him into the ground?

So having the summer off and then coming back next season looking great but his injury six weeks later was all bc of the hawks series?

Do you even think about the shit you write before you write it?

The double whammy of Knicks losses – the loss itself and the complete hijacking of the next days’ thread by E.

    It’s soooo tiresome dude.

Do we know what injury Rose had, or any speculation? Best I can find was he injured his ankle. I’m wondering if there’s lingering performance issues that might improve.

Saquon Barkley took a long time to recover from his ankle injury but he absolutely looked back to his old self this year. Different sport and Rose might not have enough career left to recover fully, but it’s something to keep in mind.

That halftime buzzer-beater by Steph was ridiculous…so glad I switched the game on moments before that!

David Crosby outlived his Pythagorean expected age by 40 years, along with Stills and Young (Nash was always projected to live until 100).

    “cybersozesays:

The Knicks will certainly miss Mitch. I won’t.

    May i ask why?”

For similar reasons I didn’t miss RJ when he was out and wouldn’t miss Randle if he got hurt. My lack of enthusiasm for them as long-term pieces is well documented. I simply don’t like the aesthetics or intellectual approach to the game. I will root hard for them to do well when they are on the floor, and savor it when they do, but don’t miss them when they aren’t. As to Mitch, I’m totally fine with Sims getting his minutes for three weeks, even though that probably hurts us in the standings. Who knows? Maybe they lose 12 of 15 and Thibs goes back on the hot seat…or maybe we find interesting ways to win with Sims and Hart, or even Randle, taking his minutes.

The only two starters I truly enjoy watching on our team are Brunson and Grimes…and IQ if you think of him as a 6th starter. No one else on our bench does a whole lot for me.

But anyone in a Knick uniform is getting my full support when they are on the floor.

Good stuff there from Z-Man on the “ethics” of fandom, etc.

I like Mitch, but hate his role both aesthetically and because it’s not really a proper role in which to deploy someone in the modern NBA. It’s Thibsian claptrap.

In terms of who I really “like” on the team, as opposed to rooting for them in the laundry sense, primarily:

Barrett, Brunson, Toppin, Quickley, Reddish. Mitch, I’ve commented on. Affirmatively don’t like Randle. Grimes I’d probably like if he wasn’t the teacher’s pet.(*) I never really like teacher’s pets, especially when the teacher is a stubborn old fool.

(*) Plus he needs to lose the lime green shoes. Liked him more in the black he wore on MLK Day. Thought he’d seen the light, but then he reverted back.

Mitch is missing way more than three weeks. The post article said he would be reevaluated in three weeks but was likely out much longer.

I don’t know. Mitch has been huge for us. We were able to go 500 with him out so maybe we can tread water but I feel like this is a turning point (and not in a good way) for our season.

Thanks for the clarification, now i understand what you mean. And sort of agree that those 3 are our best players long term. I still hold out hope for RJ, and this season’s Randle is giving me hope that he can be a keeper too, but not as option #1 or #2, maybe option #3 is the best for him and he seems to be embracing not being the man (it’s Brunson now). All in all, i can’t help myself and root for the players we have, and miss them when they’re out. Unless they are playing bad, if that’s the case then it’s an opportunity to give a reserve player a chance. But as i think Mitch was playing well, some games better than others like everybody else, and i think our backups are nowhere near his level of play, i’ll miss him. Maybe we’ll get a long audition of Randle playing C, or Hart rises to the occasion.

I should clarify that I’m not “out” on any of Mitch, Randle, or RJ as positive long-term pieces per se.

I never expected much from this season…while it’s fun to imagine some Cinderella scenarios when we go on winning streaks, this has seemed like a .500ish team to me fronm the get-go and nothing that has happened this year has moved my thinking very much. This season is more about exploring what we have and making good decisions in the coming offseason than anything else. Randle, Barrett, and Mitch “can” theoretically be good pieces if those decisions pan out. But having the 3 of them in the starting lineup and then Brunson, who can be very ball dominant, running the point, will never allow for the kind of basketball I watched in the GSW-BOS game last night. Ultimately, I’d like to see Mitch replaced by someone that can pass and shoot a bit, even at the cost of some rebounds and blocks. Or by a guy that can give us 80% of his production at 20% of the cost. Unless and until we surround him with clones of Steph, Klay and Draymond, the Mitch genre of player will always be an eyesore to me.

Winning ugly has its charms, but I’m never going to be “attached” to it. Give me a team that thinks the game on a high level and I will be happy to live with the results.

You raise an interesting point, Z–Man, which is how each of us value each of the players on the Knicks.

Some here at least write as if they see each player as a fungible item in an inventory of goods on grocery shelves. Others seem to place a great emotional bond on a player, or even on many of the players (because they are Knicks, or otherwise).

Some bond with a player because he’s “likeable” (I mentioned Hart smiling a lot); others seem to react to on-court play, either those who play well or those who play hard (‘the right way’) or some combination.

Another aspect is just whether they’re ‘smart’ on the court; one of the reasons I struggle with both Barrett and Randle is the frequency of their making boneheaded unforced errors — stupid plays — that destroy my viewing pleasure.

I admit I fall into the ‘likeability’ trap a lot (see irrational Deuce hope, although that’s a regular attachment to a ‘fun’ bench character default fault I have); I have an innate dislike for it, as athletes (as with politicians) are trained to put their best faces outward and who really knows who beats their girlfriends or dogs.

Looking at E’s list, I don’t like Reddish because he ‘appears’ to have an infant’s attitude (i.e., more of a narcissist than the average young multi-millionaire athlete), and I struggle with Barrett (seems to be a nice guy, plays too much like he’s Reddish 1.0). Totally in on Grimes, as who cares what the coach thinks of him, he plays hard, delivers, and seems like a good egg. Can’t fault him for the fact that some old cranky guy thinks so, too.

Was just thinking about this recently, interesting to see the numbers:

When the Bulls and Michael Jordan played in Paris during the preseason in 1997, about 1 of every 14 NBA players was born outside the U.S.

    Now, that’s about 1 in 4.

Whatever your view of Mitch, he cost a negligible amount of cap space this offseason. Unless you care about Dolan’s pocketbook this is a silly discussion until we’re under the cap, at which point we could move him if a better player is available.

We could have paid Mitch the max this season and it would only have cost ~$3M in cap space or whatever.
