Nothing to write home about this win, but it’s a win, the Pistons never lead and now we’re 25-19 going into a B2B at home against the Raptors.

It took 69 points and 82 minutes from our All-Star candidates to keep a really bad team at bay, RJ was impalpable (and missed a ton of FTs), neither Grimes nor Mitch shined, Obi’s playing worse than in his rookie year first half, the 4-men bench’s offense is a problem and our coach is a monolith.

    Play Of The Game:
This game was so boring I lean towards I-Hart’s unexpected block…

    Stat(s) Of The Day:
    0. Pistons’ largest margin.
52-38. Knicks’ advantage in rebounds. Pistons’ tallest player being 6’8 did help.

    Randle A+
What a fantastic game, he choosed the right time to break his 2023’s shooting spell. 42-15-4 with torrid shooting (11-17 2FG, 4-7 3FG, 8-8 FT) and only 1 TO. Second 40-plus game of the year (and 12th 30-plus), he’s having a hell of a season.

    Brunson A
Another rock solid performance. Complemented Julius well, shot efficiently (alas he broke his FTs streak at 33) and got 3 OREB (!!). He’s 2nd in the league with 16 “Charges Drawn” (the leader is my dude Kenrich with 18).

    Barrett C
Meh. Not a good game and only 27 minutes, it looks like he’s now the 4th option behind IQ. Maybe the missed FTs are a side-effect of his injury but they’re annoying nonetheless.

    Robinson B
With Bagley, Duren and Noel out I was expecting a bit more from him but he kept his fouls in check and bring down 12 REB so…

    Grimes B
Mind you, he didn’t had a bad game and it’s hard to find shots when JB and Julius are cooking, but had a couple of turnovers and missed open looks he usually drains.

    IQ A-
More and more comfortable in his 6th man combo guard role. Maybe it’s pure coincidence, but the moment the trade rumors started to fade his efficiency went up.

    Hartenstein C+
A nice block, a surprising and-1, some mistakes. The best of the worst and he seems entrenched in the rotation.

    Toppin D
Let’s make this clear: he was playing bad (missing bunnies, botching dunks and airballing threes) even before his injury. Now, rust and all he’s a shell of himself. League’s Top-5 in “need a change of scenary”, we’re killing his career.

    McBride D
Playing against a G-League team was supposed to be his chance, he failed badly. His confidence is wavering, he really needs a good shooting night.

    Thibs C
Is using a tight playoffs-rotation against one the worst team in the league a good thing?
Is playing JB 42 minutes, with D-Rose on the bench snoozing, a good thing?
Is keeping more than 38 millions of dollars on the bench (even if defensively challanged) good?
Against a lousy team when you know they can give your offensively challenged bench some spark?

We’re pedal to the metal halfway through the regular season, what will our “next gear” be when playoffs time come?

I follow Confucius’ advice and sit on the river bank, 120 regular season games to go (I’m trying to be positive), in the meantime I’ll enjoy the wins…

Meanwhile, from the Department of Entertaining News…

Kemba’s agreement with Olimpia Milano fell through or, according to other sources, wasn’t real from the start.

It caused a bit of a ruckus here, with Olimpia’s coach Ettore Messina (former Pop’s SAS assistant) calling out the main italian sports outlet and accusing it of forging news 😀

I still think a lot of this winning is “fool’s gold,” but Brunson and Randle are proving to be legit players.

Everyone else should be expendable (except maybe Grimes?) in order to get better, ESPECIALLY the players who are hot rn.

One concept that makes sense is a Turner for Mitch + parts trade. I love Mitch, but adding a shooter at C without losing much D would be pretty helpful.

I’m not sure who’s the answer at SF, but it’s probably not RJ, at least not yet. If we can get the right guy for our timeline and make RJ a 6th man for a few years, that could be nice.

Most likely, neither of those happen and we just make a minor trade to shore up the bench… maybe Cam + parts for a semi-efficient 3/4 or 3/2 who can score. We could really use that. Maybe Saddiq Bey?

I don’t know about you but I like to imagine a disgruntled Steve Mills and Dave Gettelman waking up this morning with no appetite for breakfast after Julius Randle dropped 42/15 and Daniel Jones is the toast of New York.

Thanks for the grades and recap Max. I wish they would pass to Robinson once in a while. It seemed to me he was working hard to post against the height challenged front court, was really open and was not getting the rock-most likely for an easy two or foul. More importantly, he works his butt off and I think he becomes frustrated sometimes. IMO, Brunson’s awesome, but part of being a great point guard is keeping everyone in the game.

Thx, Max. Sounds like an ugly win of the kind that used to be too close, so progress?

We’re definitely gonna win 44 or more this year, so then what?

DRED has to get on the horn with our scouts and the other GMs to sort our future 😉

    Can’t wait.

So I know we’ve played a bunch of teams missing key players, and we haven’t had any major injury issues (HUGE knock on wood) but it’s pretty extraordinary that we’re within 3 games of the Nets, Bucks, Sixers and Cavaliers, all supposed championship contenders.

Not too much to be pissed off about right now! (paging E…..)

Oh Dmar, so much to complain about! Barrett’s lackluster play, Deuce’s failure to launch, Obi shriveling like the wicked witch, Brunson refusing to pass in to Mitch on the block (he’s actually also missed a few Grimes cuts under the basket, it’s clear that keeping his head up [and actively looking] for better distribution is his next iteration in terms of point guard growth, if there’s going to be any). Much of iHart’s play, not to mention how he’s being (mis)used.

Trying to harsh on Thibs, he had a few wonky minutes distributions but at the moment I’m not going to argue the nine-man rotation. I guess not taking the starters out at the end is something… and I’m not convinced Hart over Sims is a good idea.

    What’m I missing?

Yeah, i noticed too that Brunson and Randle were holding the ball a little more. It happened with Hart too. Can they be thinking about the all star selection? Brunson usually shares the ball and scores 20 to 24 pts, if he holds on to it a little more, he’ll score 28 to 32 pts which is better to earn him a place in the all star game. Same for Randle. I can’t be mad at them, it’s not like we have reliable scorers outside Brunson and Randle, and making the all star game is good for their career. Maybe they’ll feel more appreciated if they make it, and it’s understandable to try to get the recognition you think you deserve.

I’m more in D-Mar’s camp, Raven, although i agree with your comment. It’s that i don’t think you can have 10 players playing to the best hopes you had for them at the beginning of the season, right? So being Brunson, Randle and Mitch playing great, and Grimes and IQ surprising and getting to a new level, it’s the best outcome for all players that matter except for one. It’s RJ, he has been a disappointment given the expectations/potential, but i still have faith that he’ll improve a lot until the end of the season. I don’t think how Deuce, Obi and Hart play, makes such a difference, they’re bench players and i’m not saying good bench players are easy to find, but they’re definitely not hard to find. Good starters, on the other hand.

Yeah, I don’t think Brunson is the most point guard-y point guard. But he is an incredible scorer who makes the right passes with very few turnovers.

IQ is now over 50% inside the arc. Huge improvement since his rookie year—literally gone 40% to 50%.

RJ has improved offensively in my opinion. He’s at a career best 47.7% inside the arc and has a near career best TS% (53.1% to 53.5%) despite hitting only 33% of his 3s instead of 40% from the empty stadium year. Even if his current talent level is a 33% 3pt shooter, he can improve on that. He’s not where we need him to be but this is a pretty huge step forward. Hopefully he has another 1 or 2 in him.

Yeah Cyber, I was partly tongue-in-cheek. The fact is that previously we could shit on pretty much every player for multiple reasons (e.g., Randle for spins, jump-passes, bad shots, arguing with refs, sloppy D, etc. etc. etc. ad nauseum). To have some players playing near their platonic ideals, and others doing reasonably well, is pretty fantastic. And I absolutely hold out hope (probably foolishly) for the various players on the team I made fun of earlier.

The Obi thing is a huge bummer, albeit much less of one given how well Randle is playing. (For that matter, I wish we had Hali, but I also cannot complain about our current starter at PG.) I wonder what we’re going to do with him. I can’t imagine his trade value is all that high at the moment, given how poorly, and how little, he is playing right now.

Kind of amazing that RJ is a -2 bpm guy right now. I see him as a 2 bpm guy long term but that’s a big move from where he is now.

    What’m I missing?

It’s a 7 man rotation, not really nine, and the minute, and scoring load on Randle and Brunson over the past month or so is stupid. I’m worried that the Thibs Effect is coming.

I think the most apropos phrase for the 2022-2023 New York Knicks as currently constructed and playing is this:

“Greater than the sum of its parts.”

No superstars. And although there are many things about it that would typically make it seem as if it *shouldn’t* be working, well…….it seems to be working.

And that’s good ’nuff for me.
