Knicks held 4 of 6 last opponents under 100 points.

The Cavs—best defense on the season—have held 10 of 31 opponents under 100 points.

Knicks had a near miss against CHA too

    From the Deuce article above:

The Knicks’ defense as a whole is impacted simply by McBride’s presence.

They have an 88.7 defensive rating with McBride on the floor vs. a 113.8 defensive rating with him off the floor. That difference is the highest out of any player currently in the Knicks rotation, further displaying McBride’s true impact on the court.

I remember Tony Parker being asked about Frank N and he wondered if the NYK organization would be patient enough with him. I think, more or less, they were. They eventually moved on but the book may not even be really closed on him. Young players are not consistent. I read these threads and people are, rightfully, pulling their hair out as guys like RJ and IQ kill the team on occasion. But there seems to be a sea change in NYK. We’re living with our young guys faults and helping them develop consistency. We’re not your slightly older uncle’s Knicks. Patience seems to be part of the culture. Offensively, we have only one high volume player we can count on to shoot .50% from the field. That won’t change in a hurry. But if the defense is real, we can survive that, and if guys like RJ and IQ can consistently improve on offense, we have the makings of a real team.

We can joke about ISM (I do 🙂 ) but to me it’s undeniable that the defense has stepped up, this isn’t the same team that conceded 145 points to OKC.

Grimes’ presence, Deuce’s contribution and a healty Mitch are easy to identify as causes, but IMO Randle’s and Barrett’s (in a lesser way) renewed commitments must not be forgotten.

The effort in transition defense, for instance, is a lot better then it was before, there are less botched rotations, switches are smarter.

Defense gives team identity, something we were badly missing, and with our halfcourt offense’s lack of space and movement defense must be the foundation.

Sooner or later an opponent will hit an absurd percentage of threes, it happens in a season, but we’re on the right track as long as everybody give (close to) 100% on D.

And yes, don’t trade for Kuzma, don’t trade IQ (maybe for an absolute haul? 🙂 ) let them leaven together…

Was that penalty a penalty? Didn’t seem like one

Happy for Messi if this result holds up and Argentina put together a great goal

I wish Rod Strickland had played his whole career for NY. Mo Cheeks won that one series when Bird missed the dunk. Then oblivion. The guy we benched for Mo went on to have a nice career as well. Mostly for other teams…

RJ’s leash is certainly longer than his play merits. I guess Thibs is locked into him, and he’s had a pretty good 12-game stretch. IQ continues to post excellent on-off numbers. But at some point, just settling on a tight rotation and letting them gel through thick and thin works out. I think things are pretty much where they should be, especially with Rose and Fournier on the outs. Cam should keep ready and keep trying to work the imbalances out of his game so that Thibs might consider giving him another look if someone goes down. Fight for rebounds in practice, get his legs under him on 3’s, slide his feet better on D, tighten up his high dribble…but he’s not getting on the floor unless something changes.

Only trade that will happen is Reddish for whatever they can get, which I’m fine with.

Maybe we can get Austin Reeves back from the Lakers, but two 2nd rounders and junk would be fine. Maybe Ingles from the Bucks or Caleb Martin or Jovic from Miami?

I know you are all high on the winning streak, but as you huff your wins out of a paper bag like the cheap glue that it is, let me remind you that Isaiah Joe only played 3 minutes in the game you won against the Thunder last month.

Unusual starting time today, does someone know the reason (Holiday On Ice, Circus or something like that)?

I suspect it’s dodging the Jets & Giants games.

Or perhaps in deference to this blog, dodging the speed chess championship between Hikaru & Magnus.

Zach Wilson is starting so I highly recommend watching chess instead.

Not that anyone cares but after a fantasy football season featuring some brilliant trades by your truly I finished the season on a 6 game win streak to take 2nd place.

I’m going to get fucked this week by a combination of:

    (1) Zach Wilson throwing to my Garrett Wilson

    (2) DeShaun “candidate for worst person in history” Watson throwing to my Njoku & Amari Cooper

    (3) Jonathan Taylor getting injured after 13 yards, and

    (4) Diggs & Tua playing through 4Q snow

Was projected to score 100 points in standard (and was still projected to lose because bad seeding luck). I’m not bitter at all, why do you ask?

    Way’ment…
What should I believe? The numbers or my lyin eyes?

KEMBA PLAYED 42 MINUTES LAST NIGHT??

    Welp..there goes his season *shrugs*

We’re living with our young guys faults and helping them develop consistency. We’re not your slightly older uncle’s Knicks. Patience seems to be part of the culture.

    Is it patience or inaction?

There’s three major decision points for a GM in the life of a rookie contract:

    1. The beginning of a player’s 3rd season (when the player’s trade value begins to depreciate significantly if he’s not producing).

    2. The end of the 3rd season, when the player is extension eligible.

    3. The end of the 4th season, when the player is an RFA.

I don’t know that the Knicks were actually patient with Frank & Knox. I think they were in denial and failed to take action.

On the contrary, you have the Atlanta Hawks. I don’t think they were impatient with Cam Reddish. They were decisive, and they got the best asset they could find (even though it wasn’t much).

With Obi & IQ, we’re at a critical decision point. If these guys had 7 year contracts, I’d say let’s give them 3 more years to figure it out. But there’s a good chance we’re about to lose a lot of equity.

If a player is good, he doesn’t get a cheap second contract. If he gets a cheap second contract, he usually isn’t good.

The risk/reward math on Obi & IQ favors selling high over being patient, IMO.

Ugh, just read about a fucked up Amar’e incident that happened in Miami yesterday. No longer a fan.

It really is. All timer. Stakes for the country enormous. Stakes for Mbappe and Messi perhaps higher.

Was just following on espn gamecast… bad decision. Turned it on after I saw France tie it up.

    Mbappe a modern day Atlas

The risk/reward math on Obi & IQ favors selling high over being patient, IMO.

For further clarification re: the math…

You’re not just betting on IQ becoming a consistently good volume shooter. You’re betting on him remaining inconsistent long enough for him to sign a team friendly contract, and then turning the corner.

If he has a great shooting season next year, then you gotta pay him. But that could just end up an outlier in an 8 year career that looks mostly like the first 3, but which you’re on the hook for his outlier.

    There’s just a ton of risk. I’d rather take a fresh 1st.

I guess I just don’t see a downside to overpaying them. Unless we’re planning on finding someone in free agency you might as well pay them.

Fournier & Rose are off the books in 2024-25 when Obi, IQs, & Deuce’s extensions will kick in. With our current contracts we’ll have ~$100M on the books, which should be around $40M in cap space.

The space will be less than that because we (probably?) make draft picks the next 2 years.

If we just wait for RFA we can see if anyone shakes loose from another team or just re-sign them. If we extend them early, we’re still well below the luxury tax at least for that 1st year.

Two years after that Randle & Brunson are off the books if we want.

There’s almost no reason to let them walk or to trade them absent a good deal.

no take backs donnie…six game win streak, you missed it…

all this winning has been glorious and life affirming to behold…my skin and hair have a new gleam to them…I no longer get gas while eating onions…it’s all like an early christmas miracle…

hmmmmm, you may wish to reevaluate your knick fandom practices…

It’s a shame it has to end in PKs but this is one of the best soccer games I’ve ever witnessed

    Hubert,
I think this season you live with what you have. Looking across at CHI, I think that’s your slightly older uncle’s Knicks. No young players with upside. Jaded vets who know they’re not as good as others making their money. The fact that Fournier, Cam and Rose have been benched and that the team is winning is a true sea change. Yes, decisions need to be made long term on our young guys. Now, we’ll have that data.

Seeing Jeremy Grant kill us for POR made me think, “We trade RJ straight up for him and we’re a playoff team”. That’s always a temptation. But sometimes those guys with upside actually reach it and it’s ALWAYS been our MO to get rid of those guys. Yes, we had to part with the cash to continue the RJ experiment. At 16-13 you can defend it.

As to trading IQ for a protected 1st that would not serve us as part of building a team or improving now.

Everyone pray for my roommate. He’s totally healthy and fine, but he was too scared to ask his girlfriend to push back their brunch reservation and left at the end of regulation.

I have watched many thousands of soccer games in my life and that was one of the 2 or 3 best

So happy Leo survived my jinx

PS I’m totally biased but, after such drama, when the usual US chuckleheads come back on Fox shouting about “the Jaguars chances to make the playoffs!” a little part of my soul dies 😉

Not a soccer fan, and the fact that a all-time great match with the highest stakes imaginable was decided by what is essentially a coin flip is a big reason why. I’d rather them just end it in a tie and have co-champions than that.

Happy for Messi, though. Nice to see a GOAT in any sport get his due on the world’s biggest stage.

almost as lame as NBA games being decided by fouls and free throws

I haven’t watched alot of the World Cup this year..but I’ve been following. This has definitely been one of the best World Cups that I can remember. It feels very old school where teams are REALLY taking pride in their countries- more so than other years. Don’t get me wrong..teams in the World Cup have always been on 10 for their countries..but this year it feels like everyone’s on 11 and they are puttin on!

    Side track-

Geo! I’m curious to hear your thoughts on 2 series. Interview With The Vampire and Willow.

almost as lame as NBA games being decided by fouls and free throws

    figured that was coming…

For the record, I would be fine with tweaking the foul incentives at the end of games….something like when a team gets fouled in the last 2 minutes they have the option of 2 shots or one shot and possession…they are already mandating the latter with take fouls, fouls before the ball is inbounded, and fouls on players away from the ball, so i wouldn’t be a radical change. And in college ball, do away with the 1 and 1…never liked that..

As to what is done in soccer, I probably won’t watch another match for another 4 years unless I’m waiting to be served at my local pizzeria, so whatever…

if elon seizes knickerblogger and makes me the daimyo everyone but silky and nicos are banned. yes you geo.

“There is a reason Strat is so happy these days”

I am happy with the way things are going. We have holes to fill, but Thibs is mostly playing the players I want to see playing, the defense is responding, and the players that were question marks are answering the questions in a favorable way. But don’t think I’m not sweating the trade deadline and what they could do to blow it.

For me, the patience issue is dependent on the player.

If I see a player that’s already very good defender and just needs to add a 3 point shot, I’m going to be very patient because that skill sometimes comes later in a player’s career.

If I see an elite 3 point shooter that’s a bad defender with no handle, I’m going to be patient because a guy like that can still become useful if he can just become less negative on defense.

If I see a more well rounded player that’s not a plus at anything, I tend to be more skeptical unless I see real progress right away because I can’t even identify a role for him unless he make huge strides in multiple areas.

Shams says Lakers are expecting AD to be out indefinitely. They have no incentive to tank, but I wonder if this leads Pelinka to hold onto those picks and only make small moves at most.

Banners hang forever, but what a mess.

The Lakers are like the ultimate stress test of the “flags fly forever” way of thinking. Completely and utterly bludgeoned their future for a flag that is maybe the most widely regarded as asterisked in history (not saying I agree, personally think it counts just the same, but it’s a popular school of thought).

Also, soccer being sudden death with indefinite OT until someone scores seems like the way to go.

If I am Daimyo everyone but TNFH has to change their usernames back.

Golden Goal could be good but could also take 3 extra hours and cause cardiac arrest. Imagining playing a Cup final in Mexico City or somewhere hot. Everything would come to a standstill. Maybe if you changed it up somehow, – by going 9 a side maybe. But it mostly works well imo.

How about just pull the goalies and go 10 on 10? I would guess you’d eventually see a handball in the penalty area resulting in a penalty kick anyway…but at least it would be in the flow of the game…also, the goalie is the one guy who probably isn’t exhaused, so without them, sooner or later the war of attrition would end, no?
