Hey Mike, Sorry for all the inconvenience on the site. Once again: If there are any steps that we — the mob — can take to help you sort things, do let us know.
As for Thibs, if we have logical offense/defense schemes, play the kids, and lose close games against better teams, that’s all fine. If Randle and RJ play 48 minutes a game, iso every shot, and chase, chase (or snooze) on defense, then no bueno.
Thibs can keep his job if we lose the right way. I’ve missed most of the last few games, so I don’t really know what’s up, but things don’t sound too good on the site here.
30 for 30 presents 16 for 30 would work well too
This is from Tommy Beer
The Knicks have allowed 186 wide-open 3PTs this season, more than any team in the league.
The NBA’s tracking data goes back to 2013. Per that data, no team has ever allowed more than 626 wide-open 3PTs in a full season.
NY is on pace to shatter that mark
Probably good for Leon and Thibs that somehow out of nowhere the Rangers have also turned into a six-alarm raging fire of coach-termination proportion, thus at least theoretically deflecting Dolan’s attention.
The problem is clearly defense. Most of our rotation players are being fairly efficient. Randle is far exceeding expectations. We know RJ needs to improve, but he’s similar to last year. Brunson has been a massive upgrade.
The question is why the defense has been so bad.
We know Brunson is not a good defender, but for at least part of the season last year we had Kemba out there who was even worse.
Grimes is certainly a better defender than Fournier.
I’d say Hart is a bit of a disappointment on D, but not atrocious.
I’d expect losing guys like Bullock, Burks, Nerlens, Taj, and even Payton to have an impact on the defense and it has. But we should better than we have been relative to last year even if there was a little more slippage due to the loss of Burks and Taj. We aren’t supposed to be this bad defensively.
I can think of 2 possible reasons.
1. Playing at a faster pace is making us more efficient on offense but is either wearing us down a bit on defense or creating a game with more overall pace for the other team too and making them more efficient.
2. We tend to attack the offensive boards pretty hard. When you do that, you don’t get back on defense as fast as a team that sacrifices OREBs for defense.
There are trade offs to all these strategies and right now it’s possible the trade offs are helping our offense and hurting our defense.
Feel like making a large bet on the Knicks today, because as Brian correctly points out, Thibs always manages to pull his job security back from the brink
(Otoh, if Spida goes for 40 and the Knicks get crushed with boos raining down in MSG, that would have to be it for Thibs)
Rose, IMO, is a much bigger problem than Thibs. Not that I want Thibs coaching the team anymore, but the fish rots from the head, and all of this has been Leon’s grand strategy.
The problem is, nobody fires the POBO before the coach, so Leon will get some more time to aim for mediocrity even if he gets to make Thibs his sacrificial lamb to appease our manchild owner.
I think the same thing.
When Thibs loses the locker room, he’s out. As of yesterday, Brunson was still supporting him vocally. I haven’t seen anything in the body language elsewhere to make me think they are losing just because they want Thibs out. They are losing because they don’t play consistently hard defense, have some defensive weaknesses, and are sacrificing defense for offense.
My guess is that there are going to be a couple of trades before the deadline and Thibs is going to get to finish out the year unless Dolan gets involved and Rose feels real pressure. If they don’t make some kind of run late after the trades, Thibs will be out after the season is over. It’s too soon now.
The expectations were only for this team to win high 30s or low 40s games. No one should be panicking yet.
The goals for this year were:
1. To prove Brunson could be a starting PG in the NBA (check)
2. To turn Randle around so he could potentially be moved in the right deal (check)
3. Get improvement from the young players we already have. That’s the disappointing area so far.
A. RJ has been the same RJ so far.
B. Obi has mostly been the same Obi so far.
C. Grimes has been hurt, but we’ll see more now
D. Cam has improved on both sides and probably made himself tradable but is still up and down
E. Mitch still struggles with some matchups, can’t hit FTs, can’t stay out of foul trouble, and can’t stay healthy
F. Quick is getting better in some areas, but his shooting is still inconsistent
G. Sims is better
Nobody broke out enough to make a significant impact on the results. That’s what we needed. You need 1 or 2 players you draft to exceed expectations by enough to have an impact.
Jarret Allen and Dean “Knickskiller” Wade are out today. So we have that going for us.
We are last in the NBA in 3p%. On the defensive side we have allowed the most threes in the NBA.(middle of the pack % allowed) and we are getting beaten badly on the boards.
Not sure what the solution is.
From last thread:
“Quick question:
Steve Mills was pilloried for signing 24 year old Tim Hardaway to a 4 year, $71MM contract.
How many multi-year contracts did Phil Jackson and Leon Rose sign that were better than Steve Mills’ worst signing?”
Mills was a factor in over a decade of woeful mismanagement, scandal, and clown show public relations. But beyond that…
The Hardaway RFA contract was a joke because he totally bid against himself in a competitive situation. It is noteworthy that TH2’s BPMs during the length of the contract were -0.6, -2.0, -0.1, and 0.4. He was not good for us at all, like, ever.
Randle is in the first year of a similar-length extension which pays him a similar proportion of the cap. He’s already posting better advanced numbers than Timmy ever did, and his production thus far is not far off of expectations for his contract. More importantly, at the time of the signing, most felt it was a fair deal for Julius coming off of an all-NBA season and having put up decent numbers in 3 of 4 seasons. Timmy was nowhere near that level when he was signed.
RJ is 22 years old. His extension didn’t even kick in yet. The jury will be out for a while on that one.
Fournier was a similarly terrible signing, no argument there.
Brunson seems to be a massive coup, not sure if Mills could have pulled that one off.
None of the other contracts were “long-term” deals.
I won’t even get into Phil, enough has been said.
Mbappe is the Michael Jordan of soccer
***Steve Mills was pilloried for signing 24 year old Tim Hardaway to a 4 year, $71MM contract.

Didn’t Steve Mills give Ron Baker a multi-year contract complete with a NTC? Hardaway at least a) plays basketball, and b) was traded.
The Ron Baker contract was a relatively small potatoes contract, but it remains one of the most hilariously dumb contracts ever. It was a small scale kind of dumb, but breathtaking in its pointlessness. A classic, you might say.
You know- they are really doing a good job with the Interview With The Vampire series, aren’t they? *shrugs*
Anyone been watching the Bruce Springsteen interview with Howard Stern? Excellent stuff.
Z-Man, I thought the interview was excellent and that Stern’s interview managed to reveal sides of Bruce that others have not or that Bruce himself did not in his autobiography. Curious about what JK and other more knowledgeable music KBers think of Bruce’s body of work.
Edit:I found it really interesting to hear Bruce’s take on his latest album where he covers works by R & B greats like David Ruffin ( Temps) and ( my personal fave) Levi Stubbs ( Tops) and so doing challenged himself vocally.
Go Senegal!!!
I like this part of threads, where we all get the opportunity to depart the script 🙂
on episode 7 of The Old Man…watching jeff bridges and john lithgow on screen reminds me of jk simmons and sissy spacek in Night Sky and josh brolin and lili taylor in Outer Range…
getting 2 more “seasoned” actors together for a tv show formula is working on me…
as an aside, my favorite Jeff Bridges movies of all time:
1). Fearless
2). Crazy Heart
3). The Big Lebowski
4). The Fischer King
Last Picture Show is my favorite Jeff Bridges film. It’s an All-Timer.
Bo, on the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving I was driving with my son on the Garden State Parkway on my way to the Cape May-Lewes ferry and listening to Morning Joe on MSNBC. Joe Scarborough had Howard Stern on for over an hour to discuss the lead-up to and the making of the interview, and it was fascinating. The normally unperturbable Stern called it one of the greatest highlights of his life, and got very emotional about it. I couldn’t believe how much time they spent discussing it.
It’s also remarkable how good Bruce looks at age 73, and how great he sounds.
i like larry mcmurtry…the name The Last Picture Show (1971) sounds awfully familiar, i don’t think i’ve seen it though…
i did try to watch that Fat City with Stacy Keach and Jeff…holy shit was that difficult to stomach…just couldn’t make it through, i still got like 30 minutes to go…
the alcoholism and human dysfunction in the movie upset me a bit…at least in Midnight Cowboy there’s humor…
normally i’d go with Racing in The Street as my favorite bruce song…it is a bit of a downer tune though…
a dollar to ya if you’ve already heard this bruce version of a rock n roll classic:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=61R5ECzHMiM
Fat City is bleak but great- the novel is great as well.
Z-Man, I had the same reaction to Bruce’s appearance. Not only has his voice improved ( as he noted), but he looks astoundingly well. What a life he has led.
Re Jeff Bridges: Hell or Highwater and the remake of True Grit allows JB to do his grizzled wisened world-weary old dude like he does in The Old Man. He too as had an amazing career.
“bleak”…fuck…2 drunks sitting in a bar in the middle of the day going at it it mindlessly is waaaaaaaay too much realism for me…those scenes fucked me up…
i don’t really work too hard to recall kid memories (they’re not really bad at all), dad took me to a bar a two back in the day when it wasn’t too freaky to bring your kid along for a little daytime booze/drug time with a buddy…
ha, distanced from a close friend years ago now…we both came in to the dad role at about the same time…he wasn’t in to it though, at all…still always just wanted to chase pussy and get wasted…
my closest friends are the kids now…
Love Hell or High Water, underrated movie…
For reference, Randle is making about 19% of the cap and THJr was making slightly under 18%.
RJ will also make a smidge under 18%.
Note, 1yr of Randle (assuming he doesn’t opt out, lol) & half of RJs contract will come under the new TV deal. Based on projections that should actually make the relative cost of Randle & RJ even cheaper.
Sorry that’s the wrong number, based on avg salary, for THJr. He was about 16.6% of the cap tp begin, ended around 17%.
“3. Get improvement from the young players we already have. That’s the disappointing area so far.”
Totally agree with this. It’s all I’m watching for this year, and it’s the source of much crankiness. What I can’t figure out is if Thibs just sucks at putting players in a position to suit their skills, or if our guys just lack skills.
The defense (to the eye test) is just mind-numbingly repetitive. Our guys just switch and then they all do wind sprints at shooters for 48 minutes straight. They never get there. They often foul. It all never works, and I have to believe it just makes everyone cranky — players and fans alike.
From a piece in the Athletic about the Pels:
“After 23 games, the Pelicans rank sixth in points scored per 100 possessions and third in points allowed per 100 possessions. The only teams in the NBA with a better net rating are Boston, Cleveland and Phoenix”
Which is why I think tonight’s game is going to be fugly.
” my closest friends are the kids now… ”
Geo, as I descend into being more and more of a grumpy old man, I find that I enjoy the company of kids more than that of adults.
“Mbappe is the Michael Jordan of soccer”
Hilarious (as I’m sure you saw) his coach was shouting at him to get back on D … and then Mbappe scored two goals as if to say, “Nah Brah, we got this.”
C’mon Jets!
Between the Knicks and Jets, this has been a shitty sports week for the Z-man…
Man the Giants are chickenshit
Yeah, but they probably suck at hitting wide open 3s.
The Big Lebowski without a doubt for best Jeff Bridges, and The River for best Bruce Springsteen song. I love songs that come from the heart.
