2021-22 Game Thread: Knicks @ Future Knick Jalen Brunson’s Team

The winning streak inevitably continues in Dallas.

Hopefully Brunson sucks so he costs less.

The way Mitch is playing we might have Brunson starting the second half for us after halftime.

We should play Mitch and Sims at the same time and exclusively run the “throw the ball in the general direction of the basket” offense

LOL. Obi very sad to be missing tonight’s game.

Why Quick isn’t (yet) a real point guard. Had McBride on the baseline with nobody from the Mavs below the foul line and didn’t see him at all.

Knicks making circus shots and the Mavs missing bunnies. Not likely to be sustainable, but it’s fun to watch…

There’s something happenin’ here,

What it is, ain’t exactly….obvious

The invisible six man is back and carrying an anti tank gun smuggled out of Ukraine.

Where it would be more useful

Rarely have I been so confident about an upset win. This fucking team.

Yeah, RJ had a very sweet dish to Burks.

Finney Smith is an interesting okayed. I think Haralabob had him as the best contract in the nba on his previous deal.

A Mitch block leading to a Deuce transition layup is the formula for me not bitching about a win

BigBlueAL: At this point there are no longer worst loss of the season possibilities.

It would be almost impossible to surpass the loss to the fake Nets at MSG

How about instead of sign-and-trading Mitch for Brunson we re-sign Mitch and clear cap space for Brunson, thus signing 2 good players in the process instead of 1.

Weedsy stuff here folks, I know, but I subscribe to the “get multiple good players” philosophy of team building.

The Mavs literally have ZERO paint protection. They are going to get killed by a player like Jokic or any other C with legitimate diverse skills. If Embid was in the west he’d average 50 against this team. Lol

I’m glad we went back to last year’s defensive strategy in which the other team simply misses all their three pointers.

55-29 This lead is absolutely safe! Without a doubt! No chance Mavs come back. Safe. Totally. I think. Probably. Highly unlikely they come back. I mean, anything’s possible but…well…maybe…uh…not sure.

Maybe there’s something to the idea that the presence of Reggie Bullock makes the other team miss 3s

When we come out after halftime and put the hammer down it’s going to be so satisfying

Didn’t the Knicks have an outta nowhere blowout win at Dallas during the 2nd half of the awful 2009-10 season?

The combination of Dallas having no paint defense and not being able to throw the ball into the ocean may make it hard to blow this lead even if they are the much better team.

For serious! If the Knicks clear out space, the Mavericks cannot stop them and unlike the Mavericks, who might also want to clear space to keep Brunson, the Knicks are only dumping mediocre veterans making midlevel money on one year deals while the Mavericks have to trade THJ making $18 million a year for three more years coming off of a major injury!

Is the love for Brunson a done deal across the board? My eye test is not impressed.

Isn’t he just Deuce but they let him shoot?

Do you really think Brunson is going to give up a starting position playing with Doncic on a playoff team to play in NY with a team in rebuild mode?

Even if Dallas is willing to let him go because they have Dinwiddie and don’t want to make the necessary moves, there will be plenty of interest in Brunson around the NBA from good teams. Our only hope is the NY connection because we are not good enough to be a serious FA and maybe even trade destination.

I think if the Mavs offer him the same money, he’ll stay in Dallas, but will they offer him the same money?

And if he doesn’t return to Dallas, then what other team is giving him a $20 million per year deal?

I cosign on this strategy…

so nice to see the physicality back in the knicks play…

yeah, evian may be the least athletic guy on the floor, every game…I think he’ll make a heck of a coach one day…

There’s something happenin’ here,

we’ve been playing better for a few weeks now, we just kept finding different ways to lose…

“And if he doesn’t return to Dallas, then what other team is giving him a $20 million per year deal?”

There are other teams that could use a starting PG. if we are going to go to 20m maybe we should have just signed Ball to get the plus D.

d-mar:
Randle can’t lose this game by himself, can he?

That’s the funniest thing said all night…

Hey, I was totally down with them signing Ball! To be fair, though, it sure sounds like he was set on Chicago for some reason.

Thibs switched Burks onto Doncic because of RJ’s fouls and he’s getting abused

Players leave good teams for bad ones all the time, even with the money being equal. Jerami Grant left the Nuggets for the Pistons despite the Nuggets matching the Pistons’ offer. Just like everyone else on the planet, there are a lot of factors that go into where players want to work.

How many meaningless wins did we miss Doncic by?

A truly depressing five wins.

thibs was pumped at the dee on that final sequence…he high fived Randle as he came off the court

Randle schooling Doncic about keeping his cool might be funnier than watching IQ hold Thibs back from the ref.

“Jason Kidd has emptied his bench,” but Thibs … not so much.

Z-man:
Lakers lose in OT to the Rockets…what a clown show!

I think Vogel will get fired, even though it is not his fault.

“Wire to wire” and “blowout” are both big parts of what we do around here. Just not usually like this.

Bring on Ja!

yeah, this upcoming grizz game could be fun if we can keep up this kind of energy and effort…

dang, learn how to talk like a coach 🙂

I soooooo wanna see fizdale as the next Lakers coach…basketball gods, make it so…

Hey, I was totally down with them signing Ball! To be fair, though, it sure sounds like he was set on Chicago for some reason.

good point guards don’t move around a lot; however, seems like over the last two seasons at least there have been a few possibilities to upgrade at point…

I keep hoping quik proves us wrong and suddenly develops more complete court vision…

I tried to watch closely when he had the ball, seems like he can’t track the entire group of other 9 players there in the front court with him yet…

he looks a lot more confident with his shot at least…

Mitch 4-4 for 11 points, 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 3 blocks.

Brunson 3-12, 0-5 from 3, 8 pts, zero assists.

(Of course, Brunson was defended a lot by Deuce, so perhaps it’s not fair.)

been noticing that mitch has been doing a heck of a job lately guarding smaller/faster players out on the perimeter…

hope deuce keeps getting more minutes, he really needs them…good likelihood that’ll pay good dividends later…I like deuce’s defense much better than franks – for millions less…

are we just simply “resting” nerlens the rest of season?

geo: been noticing that mitch has been doing a heck of a job lately guarding smaller/faster players out on the perimeter…

Agreed, and he defended Doncic well out there too…

This season is always going to be fun as long as the Lakers are a literal dumpster fire. It’s too much fun watching them collapse against trash teams. Lebron looked old and totally checked out tonight.

geo:

That would be fun to watch, but my money is on D’Antoni. They are going to want a name coach and probably will want someone offensive minded since Vogel was the opposite and because their current roster has much more potential on offense than on defense.

Brunson was coming off injury and was a game time decision, so this isn’t a great representation of his skills.

***Someone talk me off the ledge, I’m beginning to believe in this team.***

Well, the team has no very good players, no point guard, an insane coach, a POBO with no experience, and an owner reviled by all players past, present, and future. And they are both too many games back of the playoff hunt and too many games in front of the good lottery spots. And all the teams in their division have better players than them. And they play in a city that has been decaying for decades due the presence of Wall Street. And bagels are gross and pizza is cheesy, and the Statue of Liberty is actually in New Jersey, and Friends was set in New York but obviously filmed in LA.

Donnie also enjoys farting in elevators,,,

Deuce and Kemba are like complete opposites, underscoring how undervalued defense is in the stat line. Kid can’t make a shot and largely stands in the corner but gives 110% on D and it has a significant impact on winning.

Donnie Walsh with the post of the week, ladies and gentlemen!

And someone who finally draws the bright line between the optimists and pessimists on this great board 🙂

Wins are good to watch, but i’m getting the sense we’ll regret this at season’s end. I hope not.

I guess. I just can’t imagine Thibs ever throwing in the towel so from the minute he was hired, tanking in any form seemed like an impossibility. Now that Deuce is getting real minutes and even Sims is contributing, I’m okay with it.

Z-man: Now that Deuce is getting real minutes and even Sims is contributing, I’m okay with it.

Yeah, i agree. And now that i’ve checked the box score, it’d be impossible to lose to a team scoring 77 pts while shooting 13.6% from 3P. Not even OKC or HOU could have done it. LOL

Well well well – when we play the kids who defend like crazy and push the pace, look what happens.

Interesting thing is that we have 2 major rotation pieces likely to come back in the next week or two – Rose and Grimes, not to mention Reddish. Gotta hope that their minutes come at the expense of Burks and Fournier rather than one of the kids.

Interesting what-if, and of course hindsight is 20/20 — what if we had just run it back with last year’s group and trusted the development staff? Meaning no Kemba, no Fournier, and backfilling all those minutes with more Quickley, Deuce, Grimes, and Reddish?

And by the way – Taj Gibson can play on the Knicks until he’s 45 as far as I’m concerned. This is his 5th season in a row with a TS 61+ (although usage has taken a dive), and while it’s a small sample or completely open shots, he’s shooting 39% from 3 this year — the best semblance of a stretch big that we have. All while playing amazing defense. I would be completely ok with S&T of Mitch somewhere (if his asking price is too high), getting some assets back (not sure if Brunson is the guy), and letting Sims/Noel/Taj man the 5 next year.

Re: Brunson – he’ll probably command $20MM+, and not that this should stop us if we really think he’s the guy, but he’s 6’1″ and we already have Quickley, Deuce, Rose, and some day Rokas — and we’ve already learned that probably only 2 small guards can play in the rotation. My sense of Brunson is that he’s a good but not great offensive player and is limited on defense due to athleticism and frame — a tough guy to work around in the playoffs. He’s been great this year playing off Doncic, but the Knicks do not have Doncic.

Knick fan not in NJ: Maybe it’s not a high bar, but McBride’s actual stats this year are worse than Frank’s in his rookie year (see link), so I’m not worrying for no reason.

I wasn’t disputing that. In the big league Deuce has been bad on offense and must get better. What i find odd is the Frank comparison. He can be better than Frank and still be a liability on offense. My bar is higher, or else he’ll be just an end of the bench player, like Frank.

Think about all those absurd losses this season where we were up big against shitty teams and lost (I’ve kind of lost count but the Nets and the Thunder come to mind) Now imagine if we had won those games instead of choking them away.

We’d be in the thick of the playoff mix instead of a hopeless chase for the 10th seed.

It’s really the definition of “Knicksy”
