Nuggets go for third straight win against reeling Knicks

The Denver Nuggets are atop the Western Conference, have won two in a row and are getting healthier. The last thing they can afford to do is overlook a struggling, fractured New York team on New Year’s Day.

The NBA has really got to come up with better financial incentives for teams to be able to keep their star players. If Anthony Davis is traded before next season, he’ll miss out on, like, $10 million in total value over six years versus what the Pellies could offer him. That’s nothing. It’s like $265 million versus $255 million (or maybe $255 to $245, I forget the exact numbers). How is that enough of an incentive to remain?

The incentive to remain should be “hey we have a really good team, plus we can pay you more than everybody” as opposed to “hey we can pay you more than everybody but we suck so we’re really hoping to win a couple playoff series while you’re still young and talented.” Russ and PG wouldn’t have re-signed in OKC if they didn’t believe in management. Same can be said with James Harden. New Orleans is just a bad front office, and they deserve to lose Anthony Davis.

    @1

That’s why I think stars forcing trades like Kawhi did is going to be more and more common, instead of the free agency route. Of course every player will be a different decision process, but Davis can basically hold the Pelicans hostage from now on and he knows they have to trade him for some value or else they’re screwed for years.

I really don’t know how to go about it, maybe just giving more money is enough for some guys to stay, maybe extra incentives that don’t count towards the cap for years with the same franchise.

I don’t even care about teams keeping their guys, but the league obviously does, so if they do, then why is there so little financial incentive?

I don’t like seeing badly run franchises like the Pelicans getting free passes, but at some point the NBA will have to do something about parity at the top if it’s going to stay interesting. We could easily go from a Warriors dynasty to a new super mega team on the Lakers and I really don’t think that’s good for the game.

haha while we’re over here trying to figure out if Frank will ever learn to get from the 3-point line to the backboard with the basketball, actual point guards are out there doing this

Was researching some potential second round picks (NCAA only) and was reminded that Phil Jackson traded what very well may be the 31st overall pick to dump Travis Outlaw. That will never not make me furious.

Anyway, Zach Norvell, Isaiah Roby, Bruno Fernando, Cameron Johnson, Chuma Okeke, Anthony Lawrence Jr., and Austin Wiley look like they have at least some intrigue.

Nuggets announcers are real bad if that’s who you mean. play by play guy thinks he’s on radio and Hastings is a Tommy level homer.

@9 i was just gonna say good D by Vonleh there.
Team went from up 5-0 to down 5-10 fast.

After much study and consideration, I have come to the conclusion that Emmanuel Mudiay sucks ass.

That’s no way to talk about our starting PG for the next 5 years..

    nice move by Knox there

edit: I actually meant the half court move and then he doubled down

This is tough, the Knicks are playing well and the Talking Tina Twilight Zone episode is on the Syfy channel

What a game by Leonard, damn.

Frank and Knox are playing very well, it’s veen a good game to watch.

To dump his $3 million salary, which is insane.

I swear I was going to write before the game about how this was a major trap game for the Nuggets. Oh well, I guess I will say it now – this seems like a major trap game for the Nuggets.

Much, MUCH better effort out there this evening. And not just because they’re up.

I really like Vonleh’s D on Jokic tonight. A big reason why the team is much better on D so far tonight.

Now see, THAT’S what Trier needs to learn to do to get to that next level for him. Pass and find open guys on his drives.

I can really enjoy this solid play since they will inevitably fade in the 4th.

Knicks are the worst shooting team in the league at .529 TS%. Currently at .617. I’m just going out on a limb here to say that Nuggets win by 10.

I got excited about trier for about a minute but I also kinda hate him. not sure I’ve seen an undrafted rookie guard loaf as much as he does, like, ever.

Welp… the strong play was good while it lasted 🙂

Knox definitely needs to improve his footwork as well as strength/body control – I’ve said this before: he looks like a newborn giraffe on skates when he drives the lane.

Kawhi had 45 points on 22 shots and didn’t make a 3 pointer. That’s just insane.

How about conditioning period? Dude seems gassed at halftime every game.

I know that Knox has a long way to go, but his size really stands out. He’s a very big, long wing.

I like that Knox didn’t settle for the 3, but he really should have slammed that in Jokic’s face

    Terrible defense by Jokic wow

I’m sure every knowledgeable Nuggets fan says that a lot

    @53 I agree.

I don’t think I like Hardaway being super aggressive because his shot selection tends to suck. But he’s not bad going downhill.

There was neither foul nor defense from Jokic on that shot from Timmy.

I don’t get Fiz sometimes. Frank has a nice first half and the first guard off the bench is Trier

Oh, totally, that’s by far his biggest strength.

Rebecca Haarlow just talked about MRob in the same breath as Jokic. “The Knicks are hoping for the same kind of development…” Keep on hoping.

What a game! No game is going to beat Milwaukee, but this is a great game so far.

That wasn’t terrible D by Knox, but real good touch by Millsap there in the paint.

Knox has been playing like 38 minutes a night since the beginning of December and he generally plays almost all of the first quarters. I’d rather see him around 30 minutes and not playing more than 10 minutes at a stretch to keep his legs fresh.

@70. Thanks. Marshall, Mason, Miles. Their parents made it hard on us to keep our backup centers straight.

You have the other team in the penalty with 7 minutes left, maybe you should try TAKING IT INTO THE PAINT.

Was that the Plumlee we had a few years ago?

I think he is with the Bucks now on a 2 way deal. That said it could be the other Plumlee. I am pretty sure the Plumlee’s just spawn basketball players.

That was just dumb defense from Vonleh. You don’t leave Jokic to double Morris.

And then Vonleh follows it up with that awful drive. The chance for 3/$5 per is still alive!

Brendan Whoever really is terrible. The least insightful insight possible. I think he may be worse than Wally. Which says a lot.

I mean come on Fiz, just play Frank down the stretch. I know you think Mudiay somehow gives you the best chance to win, but we’re not beating Denver and this was a good confidence building game for Frank. Just play the kid.

@77 He sounds like a standard no-frills color guy. Not the worst…
@80 yeah it was the best game he’s played in awhile.

Mudiay got sandwiched there but I thought he held onto the ball a bit too long.

Why not play Frank AND Mudiay down the stretch? Oh yeah, THJ gotta get his 38 minutes.

Eh. Not a terrible result given the Nuggets lead the West and we are coming off an absolute belting from the Jazz.

I feel like we started missing a lot of inside shots from about the last 4-5 minutes of the 2nd quarter onward.

I liked a good deal of what we saw tonight.

Serious question: Nurkic or Porzingis, who’d you rather have on the Knicks?

    Nurkic tonight – 23 points on 10 shots, 21 rebounds, 7 assists

Frank and Mudiay did play together a bit down the stretch. Any word on Mitch? I’m looking forward to seeing him and and Kornet on the floor together.

@>8, d-mar. Great question and 1 of my pet peeves. The Bosnian Beast’s classic big man production vs KP’s tantalizing potential as a modern big. But why not both? That’s the kind of trade Phil should have made. To dump Nurkic, Denver gave up a number 1 and got back a Plumlee and a number 2. We even had a Plumlee (or O’quinn) to give at the time. Good GMs cannot miss on this type of value add. My fear now is that this type of insight is beyond Mills/Perry.

@6, Bruno. The sad part is that IMOZ the league WANTS to go from a Warriors dynasty right to a mega Lakers dynasty again.

That’s the kind of trade Phil should have made.

Not to mention that Nurkic was drafted with the pick that Phil could have easily acquired in a Melo sign and trade. You can’t assume results, of course, but there very much is a universe where the Knicks drafted Gary Harris and Nurkic in one year and then KP in the next.

I dunno, I see Nurkic as an old-school center with a decent but not great 2-way game who will get exposed in the playoffs. He doesn’t shoot the 3, or shoot particularly efficiently, or guard in space. He passes well but turns the ball over and fouls a lot. Put him on our team and I doubt that he makes much of a difference over Kanter if they played equal minutes. He’s on a great contract. I’d still go with KP’s ceiling.
