2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Trailblazers

Tonight is a very interesting game as the Knicks try to get to .500 on the season.

The Portland Trailblazers are a lot like the Knicks so far, middling offenses but with terrible defenses. The Trailblazers are actually at the very bottom of the NBA in defensive efficiency right now.

So, playing at home, the Knicks should win this game, but boy, the Blazers’ guards are scary. The Knicks handled them last season, so let’s hope that they handle them tonight!

Let’s go, Knicks!

Knicks trying to play defense tonight. They need to keep it up and Lee needs to wear McCullum like a shirt.

Knicks come out determined to retake their position as worst defensive team in the league.

Don’t worry Rose will progress back to his scorching 43% season fg % soon enough

Ndour reminds me of the kind of guy I hated seeing on a basketball court. Runs like a maniac flailing his arms around to the point you know he’s going to clock you in the face super-hard when you’re not looking.

It’s amazing how the offense can simply be Porzingis and four other guys who the other team would gladly let shoot and Porzingis still manages to score. Amazing.

I think he ends up surprising opposing defenders when he makes these drives to the basket, they always looked unprepared.

Isn’t it funny how much better the ball moves without Rose on the court?

Just saying…

The second unit looks really good. Lance will have a really tough time breaking into this lineup. Kuzmiskis is not going to give the rotation spot up easily.

Brandon Jennings would have fit right in on that 2013 team with Shump and JR

I love Jennings even though I know he’s gonna give it all away a few games down the line

Derrick Rose just put the sauce on Lillard.

And then the dumb foul on the other end.

Brandon Jennings should definitely be the starter on this team. Let Derrick Rose find his offense with the twos.

Porzingis has turned down a number of open 3’s today. I don’t mind him raining them down.

Brandon Jennings should definitely be the starter on this team.

I like him with KP and the Eurosquad though.

Jason Quick on Twitter, “How little things matter: Maurice Harkless watches his 3-pointer miss, which makes him late to pick up Carmelo in transition. Melo hits 3.” I don’t think “not getting back on defense” is a little thing. 🙂

Yeah, Wally is pretty good. He has some decent insight as a color guy.

As I said in the other thread, LT is now completely superfluous. Holiday and Kuz are solid rotation guys.

KP needs to be more active on the defensive glass. He stands a watches too much.

A lot of watching the last couple of minutes from a bunch of Knicks.

I’m glad we’re up. The Knicks were sleep walking in the 1st qtr. The wakeup alarm rang when the subs started coming in.

kp’s not doing much on defense today at all but offensively still a monster..

Oh yeah, no complaints about his game tonight overall. He was amazing in the first half. Just the whole team got a bit lazy at the end of the first half. Thank goodness for that one Melo three.

kp’s not doing much on defense today at all but offensively still a monster..

I thought he did a way better defensive job in the 2nd with the Eurosquad. Its been a mixed bag.

Agreed about Wally I-won’t-ever-try-t0-spell-your-name as a color commentator. He offers some advanced insights. He might be a good coach.

Anyone else watching Darryl McDaniels butcher his own songs at halftime? This is hard to watch. I know it’s a direct-to-the-sound-board feed, but holy shit, the cringe.

@91 – Yep. And what I like about it is that one of our two studs is on the floor. Take KP out and replace him with O’Quinn or Noah and it doesn’t work. You can sit KP when Melo is on the floor but one of them needs to be on the court at all times.
@93 -exactly

I think it’s only the second time the “Euro bench” got significant time, but both times they were great.

I thought the defense from our backup backcourt of Holliday/Jennings was far superior to the defense from our starting backcourt of Lee/Rose.

Portland started the game playing like GSW but finished the half as an 8-7 team.
Let’s hope that they will finish the game playing as an 8-8 team.

KP is so close to being a complete offensive weapon. All he needs now is that alpha dog decision making and he will be fine.

With Melo and KP in the fold, the Knicks need to target somebody who draws fouls on the trade market or in FA. That would really take our offense to the next level.

KP is so close to being a complete offensive weapon. All he needs now is that alpha dog decision making and he will be fine.

I actually like that he’s not an alpha but works within the flow and context of a game. That’s very Tim Duncan-like.

Courtney Lee is somehow worse than Derrick Rose.

Talk about year one of a deal not looking inspiring so far.

What does it say about our FA acquisitions that our team produces better without Noah, Rose and Lee on the floor?

That Brandon Jennings, Justin Holiday, and the Mindawg were great FA signings by Phil!

Has anyone seen Holliday pass?

Didn’t he just get an assist? But yes, he is certainly primarily thinking about shooting as soon as the ball touches his hands.

Willy and KP in their second contracts are going to be impossible to deal with. I’m certain.

Portland is so fast that it really is confusing how many mid-range jumpers that they shoot. An offense like theirs should be layups and threes.

This game is in a lull – we need an infusion of energy. Give us Ndour or give us death!

When was the last time the Knicks have had a PG who could make passes like those two by Jennings? (I don’t recall Kidd doing that)

When was the last time the Knicks have had a PG who could make passes like those two by Jennings? (I don’t recall Kidd doing that)

His name is Mark Jackson.

LT should really take his sweet time coming back… mindy has to take all of his minutes..

Very nice couple of minutes by Rose. He certainly has his moments where he’s like, “Oh yeah, I can pass the ball.”

Man it looks like Kuz is as tall as Plumlee out there. If they can get Kuz going this offense is going to be special.

When KP perfects that stepback 3 he’s working tonight big men are going to be fouling heaven and earth out of him. There will be dealing with him.

This is a fun game, but boy, these two teams are not playing a lick of defense between themselves. Any misses seem to be on the offensive end of things.

Courtney Lee with the layup! If only he could have done that in ’09…

All these dumb jumpers. Yes, they’re making them, but just drive to the hoop!

ETA: As I was writing that, Rose did just that. Good. 🙂

plays like that are going to earn Derrick Rose another max contract and also give me a fucking stroke when that happens

rose playing a good quarter but that last possession is why he is killing us…. kp and mindy wide open and just not even looking…

It’s hard for me to watch Rose play. He’s missed 3-5 easy, wide-open passes in the past few minutes.

Wally needs to pump the brakes on Rose. That reverse was pretty but the blocked jump shots not so much. Nonetheless this is a helluva fun game. My neighbors might have heard me on that Cheese 3.

Fuck the crowd for booing Melo. Also all of you who were shitting on our young guys stand up and show yourselves

So good to see competent/exciting PG play on our team for the first time in like 20 years..or more. Rose and Nutjob have been good tonight. And lets not forget how Rose’s D is making a difference as well. Lillard would have had 30+ on us against last years Knick backcourt.

KP…Wow!

Win or lose, this has been a glimpse of what they can be.

Lets go Knicks!!!

The Knick put together a full minute of defense and it shows in the score.

Right? It’s like the first team to try on defense wins.

We have seen some very good defense, but both teams come in waves. Deflections, blocks all have led to scores

If I’m Jeff Hornacek I’m screaming at the Knicks for not getting KP the ball. You have KP and you run a D Rose/Melo isolation?

Melo’s display of a lack of lift is what scares me going forward in his career. That’s the beginning for slashers like him. Ask Kobe.

Melo with a huge play with that Tyson tip out. He did a decent job on defense the previous possession. Nice to see contributions in any way necessary.

Derrick Rose has tunnel vision and god awful decision making sometimes

But I guess I can’t be too mad

Jesus, KP really is a unicorn. We rode him like a horse tonight to the tune of 40 minutes. His interior defense was huge at the end.

At work on my lunch break following the game. Thanks as always for the commentary gang! Beats just watching the ESPN score tick over. Keen to watch the replay when I get home now.

Knicks win! Knicks win!

Guys just want to hate on Rose but the dude can ball. Jennings and Rose, damn! What a difference it is to have these to guys instead of the SHIT we have had in the back court.

Also, how great is it that we have options in situations tonight beside everyone standing watching Melo hold the ball for 10 seconds for the inevitable forced mid range jumper. I don’t like the crowd booing him though. That was fucked up. I get it, but it was still fucked up.

KP is turning into a monster. PJ, thank you for drafting this guy.

I’m glad that they’re winning so much at home.

The first step to becoming a good team is dominating on your home court.

Only five teams in the East have positive point differentials. That’s weird, right?

Melo with an awful offensive game but a big contested rebound, good defensive play on Lillard, and a huge Tyson tip-out– great to see him doing the other things even when his offense is struggling.

Also loved that last play- double screen for Rose with KP and Melo. Get your best players involved.

Awesome win. What an entertaining game.

It’s so awesome to watch one of your own players make the Leap.

Game ball goes to Kuz. Two HUGE threes at key moments, and it looked to me like he was playing solid D.

I don’t know how I managed to live 35 years without Porzingis in my life.

in other news, I loved Hornacek’s rotations this game, leaving the small ball lineup to finish the game… great job by Kuz, Billy and the boys.

I also think Rose and Melo are buying in to this team, and it shows in their effort… I could do with less bad shots and even more ball movement, but it’s undeniable that they are better than I expected.

if this means the Knicks will be the 8th seed in the east, I hope i’m wrong tho… either be real good and fight for home court advantage or tank, please

Jesus, the Pelicans whipped the Hawks’ asses.

Maybe our win at home against them wasn’t that impressive.

and im so happy it’s not soon anymore to call Porzingis a full-fledged star… what an incredibly enjoyable player to watch.

Great game. And we managed to hold them below 110!!

The euros w KP + Holiday+Jennings looks very good

I’m already to the point with KP where I expect this every night. Melo n Rose will continue to feed off him

Despite the fact KP was gassed its still unacceptable not to involve him in the offense.

Fun win nonetheless.

Or the Knicks messed with their minds and they haven’t recovered, yet…

Pelicans didn’t even need a monster/godlike game from Davis to do it either.

The euros w KP + Holiday+Jennings looks very good

I’d have been happy to close out the game with them tonight with the way they played.

Man I can’t wait to watch Towns and KP go at it in person next Wednesday

What a show those two are gonna put on

one thing this team shows is how much depth is crucial… the knicks couldn’t have pulled this one of without the young bench players, and its been so long since this team had a real exciting second lineup.

@275 he is still a second year player. Give him a few weeks to have the stamina to carry a team for a half

The Knicks have a PG capable of dropping 11 dimes off the bench with no turnovers and a PG capable of owning Damien Lillard in the 4th quarter of a close, playoff intensity game. Remember Jose Calderon and Jerian Grant? LOL.

That right @281. The same bench that many claimed we didn’t have!

Remember, the reason the bench worked was because Horny staggered Melo and KP with different lineups.

KP had to play 40 minutes for it to work.

@275 he is still a second year player. Give him a few weeks to have the stamina to carry a team for a half

Agreed, a KP High P&R should still be featured IMO.

Both pgs were good. Rose starts making a few jumpers that efficiency is going to jump up. He is getting to the rim at his MVP rate.

@ to be fair, Jennings has been pretty terrible last couple of seasons and no one could reliably say that Hernangomez and Kuz would be useful players right off the bat.

but yeah, it looks great and the best part, it looks sustainable.

Knicks won tonight with Melo shooting 7-22, getting just 8 free throws, and shooting 31% from 3.

You can count on one hand how many times the Knicks have won with Melo over 5 years with those kinds of numbers.

What worries me, is the team has played much better these past 2 game sans Noah. Noah’s really good, but is KOQ a better fit up front with KP? Wow…

Rose played very good defense on Lillard despite a few silly fouls. Problem with Jennings is that he dies on screens a lot.

Totes it’s because Noah is no threat on the mid range. Both KOQ and Billy are. Noah may become a 15-20 min a game player permenently

KOQ does a lot of things Noah does. Sets great screens, is a study rebounder and a good passer. He can make a wide open jumper.

Noah is better though.

@BillSimmons
Porzingis was God’s way of apologizing to Knicks fans for 15 years of Dolan.

But, other teams have to play against our PGs now. We have a talented and active back court and opposing PGs can’t just relax on D anymore. It wasn’t that long ago that every freakin PG that came to the garden had a career night.

Soooo happy to have Rose and Jennings and I don’t miss ANYONE we got rid of.

Looks like Melo is finally trusting his teammates and don’t feel ashamed to be the 2nd or the 3rd scorer of the team as long as we win.
Also he allows them to take the big shoots w/o complaining or getting angry.
This wild bunch is slowly becoming a PRETTY GOOD TEAM.

@BillSimmons
Porzingis was God’s way of apologizing to Knicks fans for 15 years of Dolan.

He followed that up, though, with two tweets complaining about the Knicks not looking to Porzingis late in the game.

Noah is MUCH better than baby Oak. Coach has to insist that they use Noah as the dive man on pnr. He can’t shoot but he does everything else that Oak does, only better. Noah will prove his worth, I have no doubt about it.

@ Ruru, no they can’t. Some guys just can’t stop with the same old tired song.

This was a BIG win. Let’s go Knicks!!!!!!

Rose and Jennings combined for one turnover. Part of that is Lillard’s god awful defense (man, he might be one of the worst PGs in the league in that regard) but still good to see them taking care of the ball.

between PF and C … if porzingis plays 35 mpg… you can rotate noah, koq and wily with 20 minutes each… with maybe 6 minutes left to go small occasionally….

What a difference it is to have these to guys instead of the SHIT we have had in the back court.

It’s almost as if the hue of the pot is similar to that of the kettle.

So… if you look at players 21 or younger who have had a usage of 24+ and a WS/48 > 0.180, you come up only with a list of HoFers:

Jordan
Duncan
Durant
Lebron
Kobe
Duncan
Shaq
McGrady

And Anthony Davis, KAT, and KP. That’s some rarefied company.

@305 whatever BC. I am more than happy to acknowledge when guys are playing well and when they stink it up. I won’t be posting how bad a player someone is when its clear the guy is helping us win or is better than what we had. I just root for the team. I don’t have a narrative that I have to justify again and again and again…

On another note, how exactly did Ms. Harlow get this gig…Sheesh

Lets go Knicks!!!

I felt really good about the win tonight. It felt like we were the better team at all times, and Rose had an encouraging stat line if you ignore the fouls. KP is a baller, bro. He’s not even in full form yet and I can’t think of 5 power forwards I would take over him right now. KP actually has a chance to be a 25PPG scorer on sky high effiency, while also being a double digit rebounder, a 3PT marksman, and an All NBA level defender. He’s truly unreal.

I hate watching Lillard and McCollum play together. Lillard needs to be playing next to a taller guy, and McCollum is just a glorified Lou Williams. I bet they’d play better if Turner started and McCollum came off the bench.

Charlotte should be tough, but I have faith in the guys.

He followed that up, though, with two tweets complaining about the Knicks not looking to Porzingis late in the game.

He was right. Rose had him open several times and didn’t even see it.

Jordan
Duncan
Durant
Lebron
Kobe
Duncan
Shaq
McGrady

Duncan was so great he made the list twice.

Since 2010, Knicks record with Melo shooting 35 % or below prior to tonight: 7-19.

Since 2010, Knicks record shooting 8 or fewer free throws: 3-6

Since 201, Knicks record shooting 31% or less from 3: 37-122

Stefan Bondy (@SBondyNYDN)
Porzingis dunked on Mason Plumlee, looked at Marshall: “I was like how is he going to react when I dunk on his brother? He was cheering.”

Did you guys see the end of the Lakers game? End of the game, clock ticking down, Lakers trailing, Nick Young picks off a pass intended for his own teammate, Lou Williams and then fires and makes the game-winning three. That is Nick Young in a nutshell right there.

… and he rushed that shot, totally unbalanced, with still 7 seconds to play!

if Lakers lost, he’d be a villain but they won, still a villain! he cheekily said should be credited with a steal

anyway Knicks 7-7! Jeff should take some credit

Hornacek should get a lot of credit. This team is tailored for his style and it is great that he’s being allowed to play things his way.

True, Brian, it looks like Hornacek has free reign right now and is coaching his way. Maybe the team meeting was directed at Phil, i.e. the players told PJ to let Hornacek coach his way and to shut up about the triangle.

Rose looked better, but still too ball-dominant at times. But I’ll take this Rose for a 1-year flier any time! He’s playing every game and looks healthy, maybe not 2010 healthy, but busting his buns on both ends.

Jennings drives me nuts, but the dude plays with moxie. Loves to pass, too. He’s gonna get paid if he keeps this up!

KP is already the best Knick since Ewing. Is it too early to say that? Well, there’s the great Tyson Chandler.

I’ve been a Kuz fan since day 1 and felt that it’s just a batter of time before he gets into the rotation for good. It’s happening!

What about trading Noah for Monroe? Greg’s not my kind of player, but he’s young and healthy at least.

What about trading Noah for Monroe? Greg’s not my kind of player, but he’s young and healthy at least.

I think it’s too early for them to be in strictly dump Noah mode and I think dealing him for Monroe would basically be dumping him, as I think Noah has more value than Monroe at the moment. There has to be a decent team that has an actual need for Noah. Noah is still a good player who could contribute on a good team. He just doesn’t seem to fit this particular team all that well (as a main contributor, that is, obviously he’d be fine in a complimentary role, but then he’d be a waste since he’s signed long term for such big money).

I would agree, though, with anyone who thinks that Monroe also can’t possibly be as bad as he has looked in Milwaukee this season.

reckon Monroe not good fit for the Bucks
Noah might pick up his play, given Rose has slowly adapted his style
