2016-17 Game Thread: Knicks vs. Hawks

The Knicks host the Hawks in another one of those weird noon games that nobody likes playing.

Hopefully the Hawks went out partying in New York City last night (although after what happened to Thabo Sefolosha last year, perhaps they would be a bit wary of partying in New York City) and that the early game time will slow them down. The Hawks lost their last game after Dwight Howard was ejected for a flagrant foul late in the fourth quarter against Charlotte. Charlotte then scored nine unanswered points and ended up winning the game despite being down ten points late.

Paul Millsap is an excellent player, but Porzingis is a bad matchup for him, so hopefully the Knicks go to Porzingis early and often.

Ron Baker was called up for this game. Could he actually see some playing time today?

Let’s go, Knicks!

I envy you guys in the NY area. Another League Pass “local game blackout” for me in Knoxville.

Atlanta and Memphis games are blacked out locally, and I’m a cord cutter, so…

i was never a big greg monroe fan and i was rooting against us signing him, but he’s really not bad enough to be completely benched on a mediocre team. someone should probably trade for him.

If you visit the /r/nyknicks/ on reddit then you’ll see an “alternative” way of viewing the game.

@6
Oh, I use “alternate” (crappy video) ways of watching the game, I just wish League Pass did not black out games when I’m paying for the package. Or, at least just designate one team as “home,” not two. As a cord cutter, I also have to find alternate ways of watching NBA TV games, too.

MLB does the same thing. I’m a Mets fan, but both Atlanta and Cincinatti games are blacked out. Cincinatt!!?? That’s two states away!

yeah awesome start for KOQ.

Melo needs to try at last a little on D. Every time Bazemore cuts he is frozen and Knicks have to start switching.

@16
Well, to defend the paint a little, too. That’s something he appears much improved at.

How is it even possibile that KP doesn’t get the ball when defended by Schroeder? Are we that stupid?

Great start for KOQ, his beard really seems focused. And for once it’s great to be able to watch a game live from Italy at a decent time.

Maybe you should get a vpn to block your isp.

O’Quinn has 6 points, 7 boards a block and several nice screens so far.

Two fouls already though.

@21
Don’t they slow down internet speed, though? As cord-cutters, we use the internet for all TV.

Hornacek leaves O’Quinn in with two fouls. Howard goes right back at him. O’Quinn picks up his third foul.

Bye bye for a while, O’Quinn

Farfa where are you in Italy?

Generally, O’Quinn has performed quite well this year but in more limited minutes.

Knicks rule #1-d – “all last shots of quarters shall be only taken by Carmelo Anthony”

KOQ and Holiday emerging as consistent bench contributers would be huge. Also not sure how well he’s playing but I like Taureen Prince.

Love the Knicks defense. Obviously they’re giving their all there on the night I bet on the over (205.5)

prince has played well, kind of like blue sky ndour (i.e. summer league ndour). muscala has also played well this year.

I am not sure. I am a semi cordcutter(basic cable/need to get an antenna) but I was thinking about getting a vpn though and thought it might help in if I ran into your situation.

No I haven’t visited Bologna yet. I do love Firenza and Venezia. Is it worth a visit the next time I’m staying in Venezia?

Don’t know, I obviously like it (it’s my city after all). If you have a day to spare I think it’s worth it. And if you want I can be your guide! (Yay, KB tiny meet-up!)

This kind of reminds me of the Jazz game, where Utah came out sluggish in the 1st half and it felt like we should be way ahead, and then in the 2nd half they woke up and took it to us down the stretch .

okay ‘nique i hear you:

“plumlee runs really hard, i mean almost like he gonna hurt himself”

i feel like we should adopt schroder, he would fit right in with our questionable point guard facsimile project

even though Hardaway Jr made that 3. I though it was a great effort by Melo closing on Mislap to force a pass then getting back to Hardaway to put a hand up.

I’m worried because as well as we played in the first half we should be up by at least 20.
Damn you, Phil!

@52 agree and melo stepped up his defense in general after a horrid first 7 minutes. he seemed really motivated when th2 was on the floor.

i feel like we should adopt schroder, he would fit right in with our questionable point guard facsimile project

He is having a decent year so far, way better than the Knicks PGs.

If Melo was making his open 3s this year he would probably be having one of his greatest starts of his season. I wonder if he needs Lasik surgery but is scared to get it like CP3 was. I believe in the pass that Melo said he had a fear of surgery or something like that.

CP3 said he had been cheating his eye test for years by remembering the last two lines of the tests and then had to be sedated before surgery.

Also, it’s amazing how great Paul was playing before with impaired vision just think how good he will be now that he can see clearly. I guess we’ll see more passes like DREd posted in a recent thread.

i know his #s aren’t too bad but the guy is just not a point guard in any useful way at 7 ast to 4 TOs.

jerian with 3 points on one for four shooting last night. Racked up one more assist though.

We’re dismantling them atm

Mike muscala is having a fantastic season btw

More any other negative about the Knicks, I believe that what we need is CONSISTENCY.
We can show that we are a good team we just need to show it game after game.
We are capable.

Seriously, what do assistant coaches do if Rose is still shooting the ball with terrible mechanics this far into his career. His lower body is always moving left to right or right to left and if he isn’t swaying to one side he scissor kicks. It’s rarely the same motion.

Mike Muscala is what Nick Fazekas should have been…

I love it when Melo is hitting the three. .

Did Lee just not want to shoot to save his average? Sometimes I can’t tell when watching crappy streams.

Anyone who thinks Porzinigis should be more than 2 feet from the hoop on defense is crazy. You can’t shoot over him.

how is Atlanta one of the very best defenses in the league? so many wide open shots for us.

Anyone noticed KP got a lot more rebounds now that Noah didn’t play. You think his rebounds were vultured by Joakim?

I like this spanish fellow. Love the way he boxed Howard in.

Howard looks a lot lighter this year.

That’s two games in a row where Dwight has thrown a cheap shot. I see what Billups was talking about.

Howard should have gotten a flagrant foul for his swing at Willy on Willy’s offensive rebound.

Horny was standing up for his team. Like it!

Billy there reminded me of when KP talked shit to Cousins after atomizing him in the 4th last year. Dope.

That and the Charlotte game winner that wasn’t are still my fav KP moments

Seems like Billy might have went to the Bargs school of post defense and not much if anything else

(Really though he’s gotten way better on d)

Very encouraging minutes from Willy. KP and he are destroying the whole “soft Euro” notion.

I think Euros don’t have the defensive training that American players do and it shows at first. But I don’t question the toughness.

I really wish Rose wouldn’t jump without knowing who he’s going to pass it to. Otherwise, great effort from the good guys today.

Rudy Gobert?

That’s about as good as I can see right now. I thought the Gasols were solid.

Sabonis was actually a pretty good defender, even as an old fat man. He wouldn’t back down from Shaq.

How much better would our record be if Derrick Rose was an NBA average point guard? The shooting efficiency and turnovers are keeping us from blowing teams out.

How much better would our record be if Derrick Rose was an NBA average point guard? The shooting efficiency and turnovers are keeping us from blowing teams out.

D-Rose did tie for the best differential on the team though…

Can anyone name a great European trained NBA defender BTW? Kirolenko was pretty good.

Ricky Rubio?

that’s an impressive win. Best win of the year by far. Atlanta had the 2nd best point differential in the entire league coming into this game and the best defensive efficiency in the league by a significant margin. Someone must’ve gone out and hit the town last night.

and How much better would our record be if Derrick Rose was actually Micheal Jordan !!!
😉

Speaking of best differential – Kyle O’Quinn has again impressed in 17 minutes. My pessimistic NY Knicks fan side makes me wonder what it says about the Noah signing that Hernangomez and O’Quinn outplayed him.

We had a good win so tomorrow we must find something new to bash Phil for. His goofy glasses?

@124

Teams don’t seem to handle the noon day visiting games so well. Utah came out and played the first half like they had jetlag when we should have blown them out.

There is value in the theory of Derrick Rose. Like in theory if he had 2 more FGM and 2 less turnovers a night he would be a superstar. But those misses and turnovers kill us at times; if he doesn’t stop it he will be the sole reason we don’t win 50 games.

KP made a case for why he should be starting PF for the East in the All Star Game over Milsap.

Early game or not, this was a really good win. This was the probably the best defensive performance the Knicks have had all season. There’s a winnable one coming up against Portland which would get NYK back to .500.

The Hernangomez pick appears to be a very solid one for us, especially for a draft where we gave our first round pick away. He’s played some productive minutes for us so far.

Like even though Jose Calderon has better stats than Derrick Rose, their value might be the same because Rose created while Calderon was a byproduct of the offense. We’re 13 games into the season and D Rose isn’t improving his statistics. The Knicks look like a team with a bunch of productive parts especially if Melo can hit threes at a clip over 35%, but they need D Rose to improve in order to be great.

The problem with Rose is he refuses to jump. He needs his elevation in his jumper because he shoots a flat shot. He hasn’t adjusted his scoring game to what he wants to do athletically and it shows on court and in his box score.

The Knicks played great. Without Noah I was ready to pack it in because Atlanta is a great team and they’ll probably win 57-62 games this season. Dwight Howard has transformed that team’s defense in a way Horford couldn’t and they were team I figured would be great again.

Melo and Porzingis, man. No matter what those two are too much offensive firepower for most teams and that’s double when they can get most of their opportunities off the catch. KP was good and Melo was great. Other nights KP is great and Melo is great.

Game ball goes to KOQ just because.

Anyone noticed KP got a lot more rebounds now that Noah didn’t play. You think his rebounds were vultured by Joakim?

I said that in another thread. He went from playing alongside a guy that does a lot of boxing out and that is a below average rebounder to a guy that aggressively pursues every rebound. That has to have some kind of impact at the margin, especially on the defensive end.

Yeah I said the same thing Strat did in another thread as well

Noahs an amazing rebounder and KP plays farther away from the basket in general when Noah is on the floor so as to not clog the lane

I keep rooting for Rose to kind of put it all together because he has so many skills and natural talent, but this IS Derrick Rose. He was never a good shooter and he was never a great play maker (even though he made some nice plays today). He’s primarily a scorer. But when you aren’t a great shooter and you’ve lost half a step finishing and drawing fouls, you are gong to be a net negative as a scorer too. What he needs to do is concentrate on play making and defense. On most nights the Knicks are not going to need a lot of scoring from him anyway.

To be honest (and I said this before the season started), I think Jennings may be the superior player right now. Jennings IS a good play maker. He just needs to improve his shot selection because he’s not much of a shooter either.

I predict the day when we build around KP will be the day whenever he develops enough power to consistently anchor deep on the strongside low post in Phil’s triangle offense. The offense will finally be built around his skills with the ball in his hands early on in the halfcourt offense.

They aren’t the same player, but Kyle O’Quinn reminds me a little of Ronny Turiaf in the way he can bring a lot of energy to the court for a period of time.

Great win. The defensive effort was very encouraging. I love the way they defended Korver (except that I have him in the KB fantasy league!)

Of the unsung guys, obviously Willy and O’Quinn set a great tone. But once again, Holiday caught my eye. He’s very disruptive on D and has nice form on his 3-ball. Nice throw-in on that Rose trade.

I also liked some things I saw from Plumlee. Great energy and intensity, and runs the floor very well.

Noah may never earn his salary on the court, but it was nice hearing Willy talk in the post game interview about how much Noah has been helping him acclimate to the NBA.

I also thought Hornacek did a good jobs with substitutions today.

Seems like there is lot more PnR going on out there, and not much triangle. If Phil wasn’t the GM you would hardly sense that their offense was based on any kind of rigid “system.”

They still commit some silly fouls, I hope they continue to clean that up.

Kristaps is hardly blocking any shots these days, I wonder why that is…

They don’t position him at the rim like last season.

Can anyone name a great European trained NBA defender BTW? Kirolenko was pretty good.

how about Giannis

This was a really good win against a good team! Nice to see Willy playing a better defensive game than I’ve seen previously and the kid really does have great hands.

Boy, Howard is just not I guy I could root for. So glad we did not go after him.

Say whatever you want about Rose, the guys plays decent D and his quickness with the ball is so refreshing to see. He can hold his own with most PGs and it’s so refreshing to watch games and not have EVERY other teams PG have career highs against us!

Melo and KP were both on today!

I like Holiday better than Hardaway or Grant by a mile!

Lets go Knicks!!!

They’re running a lot of PNR out of Triangle spacing. Off the top of my head Melo had a few pull-up jumpers in the first half off PNR that came from being spaced out on the weak side of the Triangle and the pinch post big coming up to screen for him.

how about Giannis

Not a great defender and really not even good yet. He has the tools to be incredible obviously.

Re: Rose

I’ll take his subpar shooting performance if he runs the offense like he did tonight while locking down the opposing point guard like that. He was all over Schroder who went 0-8, didn’t score a point and was riding the bench for most of the 2nd half.

Please put some arc on that jumper Derrick.

Are we really good again?

DRed, you ask a good question. I’m not sure. About a week ago I said that they “need health, consistency, chemistry and depth.”
So far they’ve been healthy.
Chemistry seems to be coming along.
The bench is playing much better.
Now for consistency.

I looked at a Hawks blog to see what they thought. They were, of course, unhappy about the loss; but they were also pretty positive about the Knicks. One person said that the Knicks front court was difficult for their front court to handle and another said the Knicks are a good team. I hope we are a good team. The evidence is better that we are good team at home than on the road so far, but at least it’s a start.

no we are still not good… although the team does look a lot better when kp goes to the 5… i really wish we would throw out a lineup with melo and kp at the 4 and 5.. that would be a great 4th q lineup…

as long as rose is playing >30mpg with a usg >20… that is a serious anchor on the offense… if we swap jennings and rose’s minutes then we might have an opportunity at .500…

They were never going to be a really bad team if healthy (Porzingis and Melo are just too good), but more wins like this one and they’ll be better than mediocre, which would be swell, as mediocrity in the NBA is the worst.

But yeah, it is definitely a bit annoying at how much better they look out there with a small ball lineup. I like Noah a lot and I think he would fit a lot of other teams, but I continue to wonder why he even thought he made sense here on a long term deal.

Don’t look now, but KP is playing better than Towns, Turner and Jokic. It’s only 13 games, but anyone who at any time thought that trading him for any of those guys was a no brainer should at least be given pause right now. He’s playing to a .184 WS48 with a .600 TS% and still is not hitting FTs or blocking shots near reasonable expectations.

This kid has future MVP written all over him. Finally, WE’RE the envy of the league that struck gold outside the top 3 picks.

Willy doesn’t look too shabby either. And could you ask for two nicer kids?

Ws and Ls are always important, but watching the young guys develop is where it’s at.

And we have all of our picks! Holy shit!
