    Other observations:
Noah looked like a player that when healthy is worth what we are paying him.
Jennings looks like a career backup, flashy but not impressive on either end. Easily worth $5M for one year, though!
Lee has an awkwardness to his game, which is probably why he doesn’t shoot that much for an efficient scorer. He seems smart and unselfish, and obviously is skilled, but probably is an overpay even now, let alone later.
O’Quinn’s arms and legs are all out of kilter. I doubt that he ever plays meaningful minutes on a good team. Willy is already better than him. Please trade him!
Sasha looked like the old Sasha from the Lakers, fwiw.

Thanks for the updates. I appreciate Sasha more than I used to. Not that he’s great…but team still runs well when he’s in, which is definitely worth what he’s being paid.

I was really glad to see Kuzminskas and Hernangomez play. Both are instant upgrades. Both need to work on their team defense. And Baker is making the team. Holiday had a really good game but may be on the bubble. Those are going to be tough cuts for Horny.

On the flip side, the Celtics are going to be strong. Marcus Smart and Avery Bradley are tough defensive players. Adding Al Horford was huge for them. And they have every Nets first round pick through 2045, right?

For some reason my DVR recorded a hockey game instead of the first quarter. How did the KP-Noah front court look defensively?

    pretty as-expected preseason so far.

-jennings looks totally healthy but also looks like jennings. minutes of two-way stupid punctuated by moments of awesome. not a great alternate with Rose in that their strengths and weaknesses overlap more than they complement.
-KP does look improved, but by how much it’s hard to tell.
-KOQ looks really lean but it doesn’t seem like it’s made a big difference for him; he’s still ball stopping and overplaying on offense
-Willy H is slick, mobile and has great instincts but is very weak defensively and the play seems a little fast for him when he’s against rotation players. They keep talking about his great hands but I have trouble seeing that.
-Kuz seems like the kind of player that should go to a terrible team and lead them in scoring and frenetic flop around-ness. Like older Kelly Tripucka did with Charlotte.
-Courtney Lee is Courtney Lee. Totally solid player but if he got stuck in the locker room at halftime it would take until the fourth quarter to realize it.
-Noah looked spry. The lift is gone forever but he is fun to watch. Was really nice to see him and KP out there together on both ends, and the Noah/Baker constant off ball movement in that short spurt was unlike anything I’ve seen from a Knick offense in years. When Noah and KP are in together we will be tough defensively, but when they are not I think we’ll really struggle. Lee and Lance are okay but totally non-disruptive, Rose/Jennings/Melo are weak and Willy/Kuz are going to flounder.
-Too early to say anything about Horny but signs seem encouraging.
    -I hope we keep Baker.

How did the KP-Noah front court look defensively?

It looked pretty good, but the Celtics roasted our starters. It might have just been some flukey shooting

I thought the Celtics roasted our starters mostly because Melo actively didn’t try at all on defense yesterday and because KP and Noah weirdly acted like they were incapable of staying in front of Horford if they closed out on his jumper.

Willy and Kuz look like they can be okay bench players for the time being. If they get pressed into more than that for the time being it’ll be a way bigger problem.

If Holiday can shoot with more consistency then he can be a good bench wing.

Baker can definitely play and we should keep him, but he’ll need to improve his finishing at the rim.

Baker, Holiday, Kuz, BJ, Willy, Randle, Plumlee, NDour. Where did all this good young talent come from?

That MCW for Snell trade is so freaking weird. I’m not really sure what the Bulls are trying to put together in the backcourt.

And anyone who thinks that Kuz is just “okay” isn’t paying attention. This guy is a wizard.

Ndour looks like garbage unfortunately–he’s probably gonna be a d-league stash.

Willy looks like he’s doing enough to lock in the backup C spot in the rotation. However, when Noah goes down (hopefully only now and then), OQ’s value will be in starting on those nights. Keep Willy as the backup C and see if his defense develops before having him start on nights that Noah misses.

Willy also missed another mid-range jumper last night. His jumper is flat and may never be any good, but he is obviously very skilled near the basket.

Right now, the defense from the 2nd unit looks to be weak, but it might score well with Willy and Kuz in it.

I wonder if Randle’s face fracture kills his chance of making the team?

And anyone who thinks that Kuz is just “okay” isn’t paying attention. This guy is a wizard.

I love his potential but he has a lot of room to grow.

    1) His shot selection is poor. He looks to make or create a shot as soon as the ball is in his hands. What’s interesting is that Willy H seemed to know this and was under the hoop, in position to rebound and put back a number of his misses.
    2) His defense is fair right now but with proper grooming he can be a really good wing defender. Based on the way he played yesterday, he’ll get lit up beyond the arc. He also needs to learn how to handle switches. He plays off the ball too much on defense and needs to use those long arms to be more disruptive.
    3) He needs to move more without the ball on offense. He likes to spot up for the three and gets taken out of many plays. I would love to see him slash more because he’s a good rebounder.
    4) He needs to learn the NBA game better. You can see that his instincts are geared towards the Euro game.

Oh, and if I wasn’t clear about it, Baker is going to be a rotation player. He’s got game. He’s tough, gritty, aggressive and hungry.

Sucks for Randle, but it probably eliminates the slim chance another team would sign him if we sent him to the Westies

If you’re on the 15-man roster, you’re on the 15-man roster, even if injured. The only upside to this is it’ll make it easier to stash him in Westchester without signing him to an NBA deal, because another team would be less likely to snatch him.

This basically means Ron makes the main roster so long as Phil is willing to cut one of the many excess big men. And Willy’s play should give him the confidence to say goodbye to Lou or Plumlee.

If we kept both Randle & Baker, we’d wind up with 5 SGs on the team, which is just dumb. So this makes the choice easy, and Baker seems like a better prospect anyhow. Still could really use a 3rd PG, but it looks like we’re rolling with Sasha for spot PG duty, and I’m fine with that in the short term.

Hey kids. Why no Lance Thomas last night?

    Knicks top 7:
    Melo, KP, Noah, Lee, Rose
    Jennings, Lance:
    Next 3:
    Wily, Sasha, KOQ?

I think the top 7 are a lock. Anybody see anyone else making the rotation?

thomas had a sore heel that they were being cautious with

It’ll be interesting to see how the second unit shakes out- can you really play a Jennings/Willy pairing? They’ll get destroyed on pnr’s every time down the floor. They did press some last night- if you paired those two with Lance/Holiday/Ndour who can all cover some ground and pressed it might be okay. At this point you have to think Randle will be in Westchester and Baker should make the squad so you’ve got Holiday vs. Baker for the back-up two (with Sasha possibly getting minutes there as well), KOQ vs. Willy for back-up center, Lance vs. Kuz for the three, and a bunch of guys who might get some run at the back-up four. I don’t remember if Hornacek liked to go with all bench units in Phoenix or whether he staggered his starters- anybody watch enough of those Suns teams to have any thoughts?

The rotation will certainly include Kuz. Take it to the bank.

As to the full rotation, my guess is: Rose, Melo, KP, Lee, Noah, Lance, Jennings, Sasha, Willy and Kuz. Everyone else will have to earn minutes.

KOQ will battle Willy and lose, but will be on roster

Holiday will battle Sasha and lose (or at best, platoon) but will be on roster.

Lou will be an extra big unless Plumlee beats him out. My guess is that Plum goes to Westchester.

Baker will likely hang on as an extra guard now that Randle is hurt. Will probably get bounced up and down with Ndour to get him playing time. He will figure out how to stick, he’s just so smart, tough and driven.

If Ndour doesn’t show anything more in next 2 games, he will be in the D-League until he improves.

Looks like Ty Lawson is in trouble again. He might soon be available for the Knicks’ third string PG spot…

i think sasha/holiday will alternate backup sg duties… baker i think gets sent down to the dleague but remains as part of the roster….

i think kuz will find it hard to crack the rotation given thomas is in front of him…. kuz probably will be better by season’s end if not already….
