It’s crazy to me how far Lance Thomas has come. I remember watching him at Duke, and he already seemed like he had over achieved his abilities by getting to that level. I just looked up his college stats to make sure I wasn’t remembering incorrectly, and in a lot of ways they’re even more mediocre than I expected. As a senior at Duke he averaged 5 points and 5 rebounds and shot 44% from the field! He must be the sweetest guy in the world to have even gotten a sniff from NBA teams and now he’s made himself into a decent role player (at least for one year). Pretty amazing.

I listened to the latest Zach Lowe podcast. He finds the Knicks one of the most confusing teams this year. Why? Because although he expects them to win something like 37 games this year, when he talks front office people around the league who are smart and whose opinion he respects, those people expect the Knicks to be good.

Yet again, if a player is part of an NCAA championship team, you can bet your ass he’s going to get a chance. It makes no fucking sense at all, but here we are.

From the 2009-10 Blue Devils, here are the players who made it to the NBDL or NBA:

    Seth Curry
    Andre Dawkins
    Ryan Kelly
    Mason Plumlee
    Miles Plumlee
    Jon Scheyer
    Kyle Singler
    Nolan Smith
    Lance Thomas
Brian Zoubak (signed by Nets, never played)

    Is that crazy or what?

Well Zach should be asking the Knickerbloggers instead of those dumb front office people. What do they know anyway?

I think someone will mash that button before long, Ingmarrr. Have faith in our Statistical Lord and Analytical Savior, Mike K.

Actually, I enjoyed Reub’s latest post. It was to the point in an amusing way. Reub, thank you. I think you are our Anti-Joeles, and it’s nice to have the contrast.

I don’t mind agreeing with ruruland because he’s generally a pretty thoughtful guy, but if I ever agree with reub on anything aside from “basketball are round and bouncy” and “the Knicks wear blue and orange jerseys and sneakers,” kill me.

IMO, the confusion about the Knicks prospects can be traced to the difficulty of valuing players like Melo and Rose. There are a lot of different opinions on how to value high usage scorers.

Some people put more weight on usage than others.

Some people focus heavily on efficiency.

Some people try to balance the two.

IMO, the value is a variable that doesn’t lend itself to simplistic linear formulas. That’s why it’s so tough.

The value of guys like Melo and Rose varies depending on how many other scorers there are on the team and how efficient they are. If a team is lacking a solid efficient #2 and #3 scorer, a shot creator like Melo/Rose will be valuable to a team even when their own efficiency is not particularly high because the alternatives are worse. When there are several other high efficiency options, the last thing you want is Rose/Melo dominating the ball making occasional poor decisions with their shot selection. As constructed last year, Melo had a lot of value. As constructed this year, the Knicks better give the ball to KP and Lee a lot or the offense could be disappointing even though Hornacek seems to be doing all the right things to improve the offense.

Lance Thomas is a hard-working, likeable, clumsy-looking journeyman. There is really not much to say (good or bad) beyond that.

Noah is back practicing today but he’s already missed preseason games due to a hamstring and practices for that and an ankle…..

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone here bought League Pass via AT&T U-Verse this year? Suddenly they can’t figure out how to turn it on for me.

My friend who I freeload off of for league pass uses u verse and he had to call like two or three times last year to get it properly activated

Ptmilo i have been dealing with this issue for weeks now. According to a person on their “solutions” team, Uverse customers cannot get league pass its only for direct tv. Somehow customer service cannot tell the difference and its very frustrating because now they are still acting like they can fix the issue and are trying to charge me for league pass

Thanks. I have gotten league pass via Uverse for years (i.e. pre DirectTV takeout) but they always act like I’m ordering egg rolls from McDonalds. This is the first time they’ve been completely unable to turn it on, though. I know someone at NBA corporate who is positive Uverse is enabled for this season, but he has no idea why they seem unable to activate it right now.

@3 – the knicks win total depend on how many minutes noah plays … i imagine most human observors are bullish on him getting over 2000 minutes and i think most projection systems will laugh at that… if he does we should be a ~42-45 win team though….

i think most are a bit too optimistic on rose also… but if he’s something like a jeremy lin level of mediocre vs jarret jack then we have some upside there….

that’s a lot of long shots and i think most projection systems weight the possible outcomes more properly… 40-42 wins is probably about right…

You’re welcome! It’s my pleasure to put these annoying fools in their rightful place.

Wow. Mind blown about JR. But good for him. He got his chip and he got paid. And that’s factorial.

Courtney Lee money is not insane for JR. I mean, I think it’s an overpay, but hey, fuck Dan Gilbert.

JRs a better player than Courtney Lee it’s just weird seeing JR Smith’s name attached to that salary schedule

LeBron speaks and his guys get big deals. He did the same for Tristan Thompson last year, but $57 million for JR Smith is eye opening. Especially when you consider that contract runs through his age 35 season? Good for JR Smith.

The Cavs might have the most expensive starting five in basketball. Irving, LeBron, and Love all took max deals and Thompson got $82M. I guess you have to pay for the talent at hand when you’re Cleveland because you damn sure can’t lure a better free agent back.

Cleveland is in “win now” mode of course, so it makes sense for them to bring back JR, even on an overpay. I wouldn’t be super psyched to be on the hook for his age 31-34 seasons, but it does make sense from their perspective. If you get one or two good years out of him it’s totally worth it.

Apparently JR’s 4th year isn’t guaranteed. Seems like a good deal to me; it’s not like Cleveland can easily reproduce what he does, particularly given how far they are over the cap.

I would not be surprised if JR 3 pt % climbed as he gets older.

I assume he’ll be less likely to remain in a strip club for last call, so yeah, I agree.

I find it hard to believe people were looking to pay half what the Cavs paid. But JR played hard and relatively smart for Lebron. So
    I guess that means something…
