2015-16 Game Thread: Knicks vs Wizards

Sorry, folks, someone else was scheduled to do this game thread, so I wanted to wait until the last moment before throwing one up on my own.

Anyhow, today is the first game of the Kurt Rambis era of the New York Knicks. If Kristaps Porzingis suddenly starts getting played less than Kevin Seraphim, you know things are bad. Seriously, though, I honestly don’t think Rambis’ disastrous stint in Minnesota says that much about him as a coach. That was just a really bad team. I think Rambis is not an awful coach, but nor is he a particularly good one. However, the Knicks might just be in a situation where any change might be a good one.

Teams typically play better after their coach is fired, as they get sort of pumped up and know that there is no scapegoat to get rid of if they continue to suck. So I expect the Knicks to come out firing on all cylinders tonight.

The Wizards are a much bigger disappointment than the Knicks this season, so let’s hope that the Knicks keep them down.

Let’s go Knicks!

We welcome our new Rambis overlord!

KP always seem to be lost in transition. Why are you giving faux effort to chase down a ball in the corner you know you can’t get to? Rookies.

we always say that we dont have the talent but checking out the number 8 team Detroit,
i think we have more talent than them. Drummond and reggie jackson plus some support.
We have a top 50 all time player in MELo. Plus the support. Which may lead me to think that maybe its just the coach or the system

Credit where its due-Rambis at least has rejuvenated Robin Lopez. He should still be fired tho

i have never walked away from a phil jackson interview, tweet or book thinking anything good. but then again i wanted to trade down for winslow.

You can see the Knicks new defensive mindset, they may hold the Wiz to 35 this quarter

Not exactly a similar response by the players to Fisher getting fired that they had when D’Antoni got fired. Of course the Knicks actually had a decent team back then.

So Rambis prefers Seraphin and Sasha to O’Quinn and Grant. Somebody fucking shoot me.

Very painful to watch. Horrid defense and poor shooting. We run a slow motion triangle. It’s comical. These guys need to think much too hard about what they’re doing or where they’re going. It’s a very sorry state. Running the system, whatever it is, is not an option right now. It’s either an unwillingness or they are that dumb that they just don’t get it.

We’d be better just telling the team to pass and cut. Over and over and over again … Pets break out some CYO offensive sets…

Here I am worried about offense and they are giving up 35 points… I’m pathetic too

The shot of all the assistant coaches featured a lot of bad body language and facial expressions. Yikes.

Here’s my take on Seraphin…if he really doesn’t mind passing, and passes when he should. He is actually a very effective player.

Not sure this defensive strategy of allowing the Wizards to shoot a ton of wide-open 3pters is a sound strategy.

Lest we forget, Washington is a lousy defensive team!

And their bench is a total disaster area.

my take is that everyone looks good when they look good and seraphin has 5700 NBA minutes as a 50.6% TS guy with a 15.7% TO rate.

Rambis: “Please don’t hire Thibodeau, I promise I’ll run Melo into the ground”

So I think we know where Phil stands on Vukacic and Seraphin. No wonder Phish didn’t answer Phil’s eMails. I miss Fish already.

Seriously. It just kind of saddens me. The other day, I was saying that Jackson should get rid of Sasha because Fish was playing him too much and he had to take Fish’s toy away from him. But as it turns out, he must have been irked at Fish for not playing Sasha enough.

The two worst Knicks in terms of WS/48 are Seraphim and Sasha. Phil, what are you doing?!

EDITED TO ADD: Oops, Sasha actually just slightly passed Grant the other day, 0.05 to 0.04.

Well at least if they suck with Rambis we hopefully won’t have to worry about Rambis getting the job full-time.

Rambis has been here as coach for 20 minutes and he’s already discovered another burgeoning star in KS. Well done!

I don’t think there was ever any real worry there. 😉 But yeah, agreed.

Wiz shooting better from 3 point range (83%) than the foul line (70%)

So maybe we need to foul them on every possession?

I’m livid. I was enjoying this team. It may not have been great and we may have been in a nosedive but I had hope and I was confident in our future.

Now I’m confused. And I’m bitter. I turn on the tv and there’s Kurt Rambis coaching Kevin Seraphin and Sasha Vujevic. The Knicks look as confused as I do. This is the worst effort I’ve seen, and any energy the garden had is gone.

I have no fucking clue what this team is up to or where they’re headed, and for the first time this season I don’t give a fuck. This is not a good time to be a Knicks fan. nice job, Phil.

You have to love the way Rambis yanked Porzingis then explained to him what he was doing wrong; that’s the kind of leadership Derek Fisher wasn’t able to provide after he fought his former teammate over a woman.

They still have Porzingis! He’s awesome!

I’ll tell you who needs to be fired-that idiot going firerambis after 4 minutes. SMDH

The power of revenge…on a team he played like shit for, but hey, whatever drives him!

“Tradition places seraphs in the highest rank in the Christian angelic hierarchy”

“For most Christians, Satan is believed to be an angel who rebelled against God. “

serafin reminds me of a hs player.
with a mindset that i will score if ever i have chance.
plus mimicking some moves on what he sees on tv like the MJ fadeway from the post

Only two players in history to have a legitimate foul-line hook shot in their repertoire? Lew Alcindor and Kevin Seraphin.

as per the record, we are a better team vs the wizards plus its in our home court so this is a must win game.
lets our playoff hope be alive. one game at a time.
Lets do this NY

So to end the quarter Gallo asked for the ball, Sasha waived him off to run a pick and pop with Seraphin which ended with a 2o footer bricked by Seraphin. So glad Sasha is in there for his Triangle IQ.

things we’ve learned:

1. sasha was not purely a fisher thing.
2. fisher was not burying KOQ against everyone else’s wishes
3. berman may have overstated his case that the knicks see DW as a revelation as rambis seems to see him as melo’s backup

Why can the Knicks not defend three-pointers tonight. That was like, the only good aspect of the defense.

Someone needs to tweet to Phil the shot chart of the Wizards 3pt shooting tonight and ask “Hows it goink?”

When the Knicks need a stop and the crowd is chanting “defense”, their response is usually to give up a wide open 3 pointer

Knicks are running around like confused kids on defense. My 12 year old rec team plays more disciplined zone.

KP misses a wide open 3pter which leads to a transition 3pter for Beal that he swishes the shit out of. Story of this game and the past 10 games.

The Wizards typically bring out the best in the Knicks. Remember their game early in the season? That was a really fun game.

Wizards with guards who are quick as hell and can shoot the lights out. Where can we got one of those??

We can’t get stops so this as good as over … We complain about a lot of stuff. …but the D comes up so fucking small so fucking much. … The thread has been more cynical tonight than any other evening this season. Things have turned in a bad way … Firing Fischer was a surprise. Once that shock wore off we realized how bleak this Shit is.

Wiz have the easiest schedule after the All Star break, do they play the Knicks 20 times?

It’s a good time to be a raptors fan. Or a nuggets fan. Or whoever gets our draft pick this year.

The healing ability of Melo after coaches get fired is amazing. I’m going to start calling him Logan. 🙂

This.

Knicks don’t play again for 10 days. This will be the most relaxing 10 days of my life.

@168 I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen that in a game. Whitman played the percentages and it worked out.

With, like, three seconds left I think it makes sense – but even there, you figure whoever gets the ball will automatically try to fling it at the basket to get a shooting foul called. The Knicks still ended up with a clean look, ya know? So I don’t think it really worked the way it was intended.

@178 That’s a good point. Apparently descriptively, it’s the higher percentage move. But coaches don’t do it because of all the physical actions needed to pull it off and how any of them could go wrong.

Honestly, if we had a lights out 3 point specialist we would win a lot more games. And I don’t mean Calderon.

If we’re going to trade our new found superstar, Kevin Seraphin, this might be the time to do it.

Here’s an easy fix don’t play Arron Afflalo 38 fucking minutes. Galloway is the best guard on this team.

It is pretty freakin’ hilarious that this loss was almost identical to their last three losses.
